You shouldn't expect sanity from a country which measures distances in body parts.
-
philcr30548yBecause they say 'December 5th' unlike the English 5th of December. I shall. Ever fully understand.
-
JS96184548yThe only place where I found it useful is a list of files with date as name and you sort it alphabetically, in this way they will be also sorted by date. But in other cases it has no sense.
-
capnsoup2438yI find it weird that people keep posting rants about stupid things like this and metric vs. imperial measurement systems.
In all seriousness, if this is the only thing you have to complain about dev related, what exactly do you do all day? I wish I had your problems. -
For 7 years of my life I believed that the 9/11 tragedy happened in November and not in September.
-
Yeah, just do everything in ISO, it's a million times easier. Large to small, stop where you want to get the granularity you need.
The real fun starts when you meet timezone issues ;) -
@ItsNotMyFault IIRC, Parts of Europe still uses Imperial. We learn metric too, but the costs of switching everything to it is "yuuuge" and it's easier for construction

Voxera113888y@capnsoup have you ever had to parse dates from string where the input was done manually you would understand :(
Did a small app for a customer som 18 years ago for handling goods transport.
One office here and one in hong kong.
They listed the batch number, transport company, sent date and eta date and then the local office would know when to start asking where the stuff was.
Turns out the hong kong office regularly used 3-4 different date formats of which two was indistinguishable day/month/year vs month/day/year.
Thats when I built the first javascript datepicker (long before jquery). -
@GriffinSauce I feel your pain. Sometimes when I'm really tired and looking at log files on a server in a different time zone it gets so frustrating because you are looking for something that happened at 6 pm your time and no trace of it on the log. Because in the log it happened at 3 pm

It's fine to have opinions but a bashing the USA fest isn't very nice. Little things like this may annoy you but to those of us from the US it's common and preferred. Differences are what makes cultures unique and interesting. What's "normal" to you isn't "normal" to everyone.
-
NuflowX6288y@CodingPrincess yeah, differences are fine, but can be frustrating from time to time.
And just if you're interested, here's how it is across the globe:

@NuflowX I understand. As developers we all know what it's like to have preferences and know how much it can slow you down when you can't do things the way you're used to. It wasn't your initial comment that was uncalled for, it was more other people's responses that were unnecessarily bashing on the US.
-
capnsoup2438y@Voxera Sounds like your problem is that HTML and browsers don't expose a regionalized date picker widget you can use and has nothing to do with the date format itself.
Edit: and by the way I can totally relate to what you're saying. You were hired to make something work and you forced it to work through blood sweat and tears. I respect that.
But let's put the blame where it should be. The browsers have access to all the information needed to make this task easy, but instead it's yet another thing they handed off to the JS web devs to figure out. -
arcioneo7707yBro, have you ever tried to handle any date as LONG value? That is universal and not format depending.

If it is not visual, will it ever be seen !?!

@Wallpaper The fact that parts of europe is retarded as well isn't a good excuse (most of the retatdation in the world can be traced back to the UK afterall)

Seriously, why? WHHHYYYY?
US-date-format sucks, every FUCKING TIME!
The only time I really notice is when the "month" is larger than 12:
05/13/2017
"5th of Dec... oh. Fuck. Not this shit again..."
(It makes no sense. Absolutely none.)
