Semi rant/ opinion
I have been wondering a bit about what my fellow devs think about adblockers

I have been using an adblocker for years.
I am guessing we got a good mix of both people who are pro and against them

I do get the site's owner point of view wanting to get a little bit of cash out of their site buts its the ad publisher that come in and royally screw things up with their garish flashy shit.

I wouldn't really mind 2-3 small static adverts on a page, little ones that don't disrupt the flow of the page or clash with the page colour scheme (i know that one is a bit far fetched but anyone who loaded up a dark page in the comfort of a darkened room only to have a big bright ad turn up in the middle of the page force them to squint ). Sadly publishers don't give a damn, their only concern is to
GRAB YOUR ATTENTION...

FLASHY FLASH FLASH MOFO!

OH AND HERE IS AN AUDIO ENABLED ONE FOR YA, GOOD LUCK MUTING IT YOU POOR SHMUCK , ONE CLICK ON THE DAMN THING WILL TAKE YOU TO THE LAND OF POP-UPS

AH YOU WANNA DOWNLOAD SOMETHING BUDDY ? AH WELL I HOPE YOU LIKE INDIANA JONES' SCENE WITH HOLY GRAIL
CUZ HERE ARE 10 DOWNLOAD BUTTONS, ONE IS THE REAL THING THE REST WILL ARE TOOLBARS

They are the biggest culprit here yet moan the loudest about adblockers.
Sort yourselves out then complain to us about ad blocking

I love how calm your rant started and you got more and more agitated. Made for a good read!

I agree on all those points. I never got an ad blocker to hide ads, I got an ad blocker to stop ads interfering with me viewing web pages.

I've seen some people hide their page content if an ad blocker is enabled, and I understand why. Why let you view their content if they aren't going to make any money off of it.

I've seen other sites detect that ads are blocked and ask if you wouldn't mind making a small PayPal donation instead. I quite like that idea (almost a freemium model) but I doubt many people donate.

I'm all for responsible ads. I have an adblocker, and I unblock almost every site I visit by default, unless the ads are obstrusive, make things laggy or otherwise stop my flow.
If you make a pop-up, you're on the blacklist.
    Flash ad that well...Flashes? Blacklist.
    Sound and autoplay? Blacklist.

I'm also all for well designed website that don't try to make me click repeatedly. You made a list, nice. You put a page refresh each item to get more clicks? Blacklist.

I also don't mind ads as long as they fit nicely into the rest of the content.

For example some YouTube channels started to put advertisement directly into their videos and somehow that works well because I don't get ads for shoes when I watch a tech video, it's not twice as loud as the rest and usually it's either short or at the end of the video.

But apparently that method is too amazing for some companies so they put auto-playing videos all over news sites, make flashy popups or just triple the loading time of a website just to show me a product I wouldn't ever buy.
And that's why I use ad blockers.

I use adblockers and Flash-blockers so I don't waste bandwidth and my data plan with crap. I used to tether a lot and now it's just part of me.

Still, as an avid podcast listener, I quite enjoy ads there. Some are related to the content, most are just non-obtrusive (you can skip them if you want, because producers demarcate them quite clearly), some are even funny (Bill Burr always makes a joke about the companies advertising with him, so he keeps it interesting, fresh).

So yeah, adblockers FTW. Advertisement can be everywhere. It just needs to be smart.

I like it if websites politely ask you to disable the adblocker. If I like the content and visit regularly - I will.
