Ever apply for a dev job in an industry you really wanna be jn even though you know you aren’t very qualified for the job? How’d that go for you?

It's a bit muddy here.

Do I apply for jobs in an industry in which I have zero experience? Sure, all the time. Industry specific stuff can be picked up on the job.

Do I apply for jobs where I don't meet all of the requirements? Sure, all the time. The requirements are a wishlist, they're almost never an absolute requirement.

Do I apply for jobs where I meet next to none of the requirements, or try to make it sound like I've got experience where I haven't? Absolutely not. Doesn't do anyone any good. Either they realise and note me down as a liar, or they don't realise and I'm likely fired in probation because I can't do the job anyway.

Just to add a little bit to what @AlmondSauce said, I'd say there's no harm in applying. It really doesn't matter whether *you* think you're qualified or not, what matters is whether *they* think you're qualified, and you'd be surprised how different those two can be sometimes. Be honest in the interview and application though.

At some point to some extent we all do that ... few times does anyone know the given job top to bottom when applying.

I did it a lot and I never got a call back

About 14 years ago I applied for a contract role with one of the big UK banks that I barely qualified for. I got the job!

I did prepare very well for the interview though

did, got in with the upmost bravado and confidence levels. Aced the interview on account of my charm, seduced the manager at the time.

2 years later I am the manager of the department. I still don't know what I am doing, but by heavens does my shit looks convincing af.

jkjk I was overqualified but they got me in anyway. Never sell yourself sort, some hiring managers prefer a differrnt type of person than your standard know it all neckbeard, apply either way and work on yourself always with the intention of learning more every day and not dragging others or yourself down.

I'll echo AleCx04 and say that (while this isn't the same) taking chances costs nothing and some folks are just looking to hire the right person, not every tech checkbox.

I broke into tech while busy sucking / not paying attention in collage when a friend referred me to a job that i knew nothing about the tech.... and from there I've leap fogged my way around various corners of tech.

My company got into an industry that they had 0 experience in, and didn't even hire consultants or experts. Nothing, just nothing.
