This item on my TODO list reads "Finish the paper" but it's more like wishful thinking. I have very few pages available (cuz IEEE still can't afford to give you free pages all the while being fully electronic and each extra page costs like €1000000) and much more to explain. As well, am trying to fit words by removing other words...

Fuuuuuuuck youuuuu toooooo IEEE.

@IntrusionCM my own Prince Charming, my own knight on a black horse, a rich handsome tolerable man who is in love with me, a treasure chest in form of a multibillion dollar bank account, a rich man who doesn't want sex but likes me enough for gold digging purposes... Which do you have available?

Oh, and of covid could fuck off, a cuddle and my tea during this snow storm.

... Don't mind me. I'm going through PMS while waiting for the bloody battle to start, so my superficial girly side is much more pronounced.
(And ofc, this damn paper is nowhere near being finished)

Only a million per page? Cor, they must have lowered their prices since I last looked.
  • 1
@NoMad I just remembered how girly nice you were to me regarding my painful event with a mandoline....

It would be easier if you would explain what you need as some IEEE content is available on other pages.

Most universities have an IEEE account / access, e. g. via the library...

I might do a bookmark search, but without knowing what it's kinda useless xD

@AlmondSauce 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂 that is funny because they actually haven't changed prices and yet all their conferences are now online. It makes one wonder about their expenses.
  • 4
@IntrusionCM it's the other way around. I'm submitting the paper to them. To one of their conferences, to be exact.
  • 2
@NoMad damn. Too much bash programming today. Brain is fried
  • 3
@IntrusionCM I'll be the person you will quote in future, and I won't be in the "et al." anymore. Muwahahahahaha

@NoMad It's almost like they were just robbing thieves all along...

On a serious note, quite how the academic community hasn't revolted against the big publishing houses is incredible. Those costs are from when they literally had to print out journals and post them on, it feels criminal to keep that model the same when they don't have to lift a finger to serve it. All the worse because they're literally mindlessly profiteering over the hard work of decent, cash strapped researches while they rake in top dollar.

    It's an outrage.

@NoMad highly unlikely, but I'll just play a long.

    *hugs the evil maniac wife*

Everybody will falter in your presence!
  • 1
@IntrusionCM who is this evil maniac wife?

    ...Did we get married?

... WHEN DID WE GET MARRIED?
  • 1
@NoMad uhm. I thought you're responsible for our sanity, what the hell do I know?!!
  • 5
@NoMad I will start quoting you already from now on. Muwahahahahaha [1].

@AlmondSauce Well, peer review is still a thing and I think it's not very cheap. Other than that, yes, scientific publishing is definitely overpriced.

There are some non-profit publishers which only cost a fraction of what others do, this should be the standard
  • 3
@StopMotionCuber Peer review is generally done by a panel of academics, chosen by the journal you're submitting to, for free. It's not done by the publishing houses.

@AlmondSauce Very true. Journals have editorial offices though. The role of an editorial office depends on the journal and is usually limited to technical things such as configuring the editorial management software and checking that all bibliographic entries include page numbers/publication years.

@aserebrenik Sure, but that should be a pretty menial, unskilled job. (They also do a poor job at it in any case if they even actually bother - I've seen heaps of those types of mistakes make it through.) It's also unjustified - that should be picked up in normal peer review, and usually is (if it's picked up at all.)

I'm not against those publishing houses charging for membership, or even charging conferences for the initial publication of their papers. That clearly involves some amount of work. But charging everyone stupid money to read those papers forever after is legalised theft in my book.
  • 2
@aserebrenik they charge for reading paper, extra pages when publishing, attending conference, and other stuff such as membership. Is it an office or a palace? Because given the amount of conferences each year, they're making so much money.
  • 2
@NoMad The amount of money the publishers are making are *obscene*. At one of our professional organisations the things are starting to change, e.g., they are offering more and more travel support grants and free registrations. So things are slowly getting better.

Pragmatically, you can always ping me and I can try to get you a paper behind the paywall...
  • 1
@aserebrenik I will. Thanks for the offer.

In the meantime, for the meek and the poor:
    Look up sci-hub

    😉
  • 1
@NoMad a.k.a. the site that should not be named :) Unfortunately, in the country where I live sci-hub is blocked but, of course, we have VPN...

For books one might consider gen.lib.rus.ec
