    Kinda

You really shouldn't care about a persons gender and more about their character and competence

    69420 🤔
    nice

@12bitfloat sure, but do I get to cheer on a minority person actually pulling themselves by their bootstraps and surviving an unfamiliar environment?
  • 3
    @NoMad That's a hard question. Maybe

Purely in theory *any* unequal treatment not based on merit is unjust oppression. Cheering on a woman because she is a woman certainly is unequal treatment

But the world isn't black and white and it depends on the situation

Should you be allowed to cheer on an under dog? Feels like it

But that poses the question of the amount of equity (the opposite of equality) we can/should have for it to produce a generally positive effect while not degenerating into genocide which it very quickly does

@12bitfloat idk man, and I'm ranting here... but it seems like because majority are men, CS is catered for men and women find it an undesirable env to be in. It just sometimes seems like a "boys club" and anything or everything else is considered "unprofessional". I'm not the one to complain, cuz I'm here mostly cuz of the money, but I do miss having women around.
Just to clarify, I don't "boobs and no beard", I mean people who are very feminine. You could say CS is very "unfeminine" but it's not exactly masculine either, but it has about, what, 5 times more men than women.

So, to sum up, I don't know. 😛

One of my coworkers just got selected as a finalist for some women’s thing because she’s a woman who’s in tech and wrote about being a woman in tech.

Like. Yay. Good job. You have parts that differ from some others you work with, can code (somewhat), and wrote about coding while having them. Good job. Really feeling your accomplishment.

@Root god I actually hate everything about "networking" and damn blog posts. It always seems so fake and just a huge circlejerk (the irony)

Also, OP, if you would’ve said "yay! Go get it my dude!" if the person was a guy, then yeah saying "you go girl" is fine to me. Please just no "yasss queeen" cause I would audibly cringe and grunt at you.

@Root I like those when it's about some inspiring story of someone with like 4 kids and a nagging mother in law and chores every night and everything thing else an average Jane is supposed to do, who overcome the situation despite everything blocking their way. Otherwise, yeah it's a "so you got the parts" awards.

But that doesn't mean it's fun without the good ones. And we get a mix of good and bad everywhere but I think the good ones are worth it.

@Root did she write a medium article that goes somewhat like this?

React is a front end framework! It’s super cool! It makes your UI scalable and was invented by Facebook. How cool is that? Today we will learn react by building a todo list. Let’s get started shall we? Yay

    @NoMad

    > surviving in an unfamiliar environment

While I think it's crucial to have more diversity in tech, I'm not sure leading a hacktivist group "counts".

I mean, that's about as isolationist and counter-culture as you can get in tech, so is it really a victory for a better workplace for minorities?

Also, this person is trans. And before you think I'm a transphobic piece of shit, if you feel female, you're female in my book. BUT: I feel in this context "birth sex" is relevant, because this person publicized identifying as male until very recently.

Now, I'm not saying being trans in tech is any easier -- not at all!

Just that the narrative of a person outing as trans and committing to counter-culture, anti-capitalistic blackhatting is different than the narrative of a woman building a constructive career in tech.

And regardless of gender/identity, I do not think we should cheer for people who do not use ethical disclosure before public release.

As a father with a daughter it's OK to cheer for someone in a situation rocking it where there gender/orientation/physical qualities usual don't.

Just as long as you aren't recognizing it just because they are said gender/ect but because they really are rocking it.

@electrineer yes, 69420 is an interesting number

I think It's sexist that we even try to bring sexism into everything all the time.

You can cheer whoever you want and the fact that the current world 'trained' you to second guess your actions is disturbing at best.

You know how you we can all stop being sexist? By treating everyone equality intuitively, not under peer pressure... Just be a human, and treat other humans as humans, and if someone gets offended that's entirely their problem.

If you want to say "you go girl" because you're cheering on a girl for something you think deserves it for whatever reason, then that's exactly the right language to use. It's not discriminating anyone, It's just expressing your sentiment.

I find it odd that people use sex or even sexual preference as their primary identification feature in an environment where this doesn't actually play any role, functionally.

I mean, there are some backward shitholes that havn't yet arrived even in the late 20th century so that it's a thing there, but otherwise, it's like "fighting" battles that have long been over.

That the modern left is that much into identity politics is rather a clue that they want to dodge a much more important and traditionally left question - the one of classism. Means, that the most decisive factor for one's income is the income of one's parents.

@bittersweet I'd guess the ethical disclosure would've made it to never see the light of the day. I haven't look into the whole thing, so I won't argue further cuz I simply don't know.

@bittersweet I don't have a full picture but it might have been ethical to directly warn the end users such as hospital patients and school kids about the outrageous negligence of Verkada and their customers.

Y'all, this was not about gender disparity in IT cuz for that we're all to blame. (And others who are not even in the field, specifically highschool teachers who are tech illiterate and think this is rocket science)

This was literally about why cheering someone on feels so wrong. Like, y'all are on defense. What's up with that? Was this devrant or Judgement Central?

By definition, sexism is "prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, on the basis of sex."
You could argue this was stereotyping, but then less than 1 out of 5 in STEM are women so it ain't even that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But just saying, nobody asked you to do anything. Just don't dictate how everyone should think or behave. If I wanna cheer, I cheer. If she wants to get offended, she can. Otherwise, I'm just impressed and I'm expressing it so no biggie. And I'll forever be impressed when I hear of a hacker girl.
