@BuffDiplomat to elope generally means to get married in secret, running away is usually the first step for that. Basically "ran away with X and got married". Of course you can use it creatively, but yeah.

Yes, 'elope' has historically meant "to run away secretly with the intention of getting married usually without parental consent." But it has also meant—and still means—"to escape." -
