He just grins and carry on with whatever wild tangent he's on.

Ask him something about a spec document, he might drift off and start talking about how radar works and its importance in ww2

Or explain what are groats or farthings

Its always funny to listen to him drive someone nuts.

Truth being told, I really enjoy random conversations that drift into unexpected places. The thing is, I enjoy them only when I'm not trying to work...
