DonMcCoy5658yLoool ππ totally right.
And..
@No-one @willbeddow you guys made my day, wonderfully thought comments -
BadFox23318y@No-one Cool so far, Linux server crashed because of power supply failure and it corrupted some partition, I'm installing centOS.
U? -
BadFox23318y@No-one You seem like you're having fun as well. "Idiots" the bane of every developer. If only they were as useful as they are annoying.
What are you building? -
BadFox23318y@No-one Good luck with your project then πππ. The server is hosting a multitude of things: samba shares, torrent client, web development learning server and some KVM. Still working on that last one. I want it to run android lollipop with adb over Ethernet to my main PC so that I can push apps from android studio to it.
-
BadFox23318y@No-one I tried to use my phone, there was a gap of at least 1 minute between building the app and pushing it on the phone. Another reason is that I can't control the specs of my phone, I can with a virtual machine though. π
It's a good idea to use a laptop as a server, you could get a passively cooled one for virtually zero noise. There are some drawbacks though, e.g. the drive expandability. -
BadFox23318y@No-one It takes that long over USB, I tried changing USB drivers, USB ports (from 1.0 to 3.1) and even reinstalling pretty much everything related.
Changing phone specs is useful when testing the minimum requirements of applications. For example, I can run any app on a dual core 1.2GHz or a single core 800MHz among other configurations of cores, clock speed, RAM and storage etc. -
BadFox23318y@No-one I'm pretty sure that samba files aren't cached on the users computer. There is, however, a built-in windows option called "Make available offline" (in the properties of the network drive) to make the files available when the server is offline. The Linux equivalent of that would be the OFS (Offline File System).
-
BadFox23318y@No-one Interesting, there will be a problem with programs that use drivers installed on the host computer e.g. VMware with its network drivers. Is the latency going to be good enough? (For games, loading textures and all that)
-
BadFox23318y@DeadBladeLord What are you using to share? SMB, FTP maybe FTP over SSH? Is your server Linux or Windows?
-
BadFox23318y@No-one You could possibly use the server ramdisk as cache for writing to the networked drive, it would massively help with small files.
-
BadFox23318y@DeadBladeLord Perhaps you could also use a prediction service to preload frequentlyβ used files onto the ramdisk for improved read speeds.
-
BadFox23318y@No-one You could actually make your windows installation disposable by network booting off the server.
-
BadFox23318y@No-one BTW I was bored so now you have a lot of notifications, have fun. πππ
Me + Insomnia = Upvotes -
BadFox23318y@No-one As for caching software, bcache should work well enough provided you configure it properly. You could mount your RAM as a internal disk and use it as a read and write cache for the samba share.
-
BadFox23318y@No-one By hybrid do you mean having something like a raid 0 array of 2 drives be mirrored onto another array of the same size?
-
BadFox23318y@No-one I think we achieved our goal of the longest reply chain so there's no point in continuing anymore. We can now safely abandon this message board.
-
BadFox23318y@No-one Ok I just figured out why I don't get notifications, my android ROM is actively blocking them. Fixed it. Should work now π.
