Yep, easily the thing I hate the most about the job

Here's what you do when someone asks for an estimate.

Them: how quickly do to think you can get something like this done?

You: how soon do you need it?

Them: well I would like it now.

Me: well I would like to give it to you now but that's not possible.

Them: what is possible?

You: it's hard to say with no requirements to go off of, but with what you've shared it would be (three times what you think it would take).

Them: .... That's too much.

You: then I suggest we have several more meetings to discuss the details of what your want so I can have a better picture of what you need.

-- And they never setup a follow up.

Works 100% of the time half the time.

In my previous job we hadn’t estimated for two years.

Not because we were so good we didn’t need them, quite the opposite.
They decided it was a waste of time estimating so have everything as 8 points and then they said that equals 4 hours of work.

Estimating was better
