Talking to a friend who was considering hiring a web developer. He said the web dev suggested using WordPress. I suggested he find a new web developer.

That depends on the requirements.... Not my first choice but if the client asks me for something in one week and he will manage the content and he can't use an e-mail properly then yep, WordPress IS an option!!

One thing i've growned to hate is that "can you fix this content I made really quick" request...

WordPress is a perfectly viable option for a lot of websites. If he were looking for a completely unique app I'd say it probably not the best option...

And what would you recommend instead of WordPress? And don't say "anything", that's avoiding the question.

He's looking to host social media style server with embedded videos. Thats all I really know. I told him optimization on the backend would be key.

Yeah I def don't recommend hosting videos directly on a WP site...

    Yup, agreed.

I told him it would be easier to use an open source social network tool and just host the server himself. I read about some FOSS social network, but I forgot the name.

@ChachiKlaus your post was vague, and i understood it to imply that regardless of the project scope WordPress was not a viable option. But if instead of hosting videos directly he would allow people to submit / share videos served through a video hosting service (YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia, etc) I would say that WP is still viable as a content management system.

My point is that is is extremely ignorant to flat out exclude options based solely on personal prejudice against a specific platform.

Yeah, I got your point. I'm not super worried about it on a site geared towards sarcasm. But thanks for the input.

Depends on the client. Some of them need it. Maybe the developer sensed wp might be just what he needed.

The bottom line is it doesn't matter what you prefer, it is how much time do have to invest and what is the return.

What if they client said he wanted to only spend $1000.00. WordPress may look pretty good.

I fucking hate WP... but I recommend it to 90% of the people who need a simple business website.

    It's highly supported.
    It's easy to learn.
I can find hosting, a theme, and fill it with content for under $100.

@fyroc o I feel this, but I don't really hate it...I've just learned to work with what it is, and love it for what it is...

Few companies recommend their web developers to use the WP...
Bcoz they want it fast and simple...
That's dropping the value of programming in web development...

@DevRmn even though I use WP extensively I agree with this
