Does anyone know a free program for Windows to test RAM throughput? In GB/s

CPU-Z has a benchmark for processors. Not sure on ram. It should tell you ram specs though. Not sure if that is helpful. I don't know what OSes cpuz supports though. I use it in windows.

Memtest86. No idea what is good for Windows/Linux

I've apparently used something called MaxxMEM2 at some point. I don't know if it's good or not.

Throughput is "relative" in terms of RAM.

Usually you have a fixed clock speed and higher is better - when clock speed is same, certain timings like CAS latency decide what's best.

CPU-Z can read out all timings and clock speed afaik.

@IntrusionCM It only shows a few latencies, but those are probably the most interesting ones. But what you can't see from the numbers is how the memory controller options affect the performance. And the amount of ranks in your sticks.

Throughput can - and is - usually calculated based on the frequency and latencies.

I'm not into overclocking, but from my theoretical understanding you cannot have "more" throughput if you don't change the latencies or the core frequency.

@IntrusionCM well, the theoretical maximum throughput should be a simple calculation, but performance in real applications is another thing.

@electrineer Yes... But that's why I'm rather struck with the throughput thought.

Unless I'm completely misunderstanding something, throughput doesn't matter?

@IntrusionCM it depends, sometimes throughput matters, sometimes latency matters, sometimes both matter but most of the time nothing really matters.
