The whole show could be redone today in the 21st century but instead of a mobile hospital it's a software development firm.
Hawkeye can be played by the lovable yet jaded sr architect.
BJ can be played by the forever faithful Jr dev.
Winchester is the Sr developer that always has to be right.
Radar is the intern that's getting paid next to nothing but the whole operation hinges upon him.
And Potter is the stern and lovable director of software development.
Not to mention guest appearances by:
Flagg the compliance auditor,
Burns the secops chode,
The only female developer Hotlips,
Mulcahy the scum master,
And Klinger the zany desktop support guy. -
The Expanse.
already mentioned BSG (the newer one)
The Orville
oh, yeah Star Treks, DS9, TNG, Enterprise, in that order. the others are crap.
and Stargate Universe when i want something lighter. all the other stargates don't interest me at all, though, it's the premise of the ship that is awesome. -
Mr Robot
Silicon Valley
Person of Interest
TBBT

..
and the never ending list goes on… -
Probably an odd one out here, but Avatar - The Last Airbender.
It's a kid's show, but the writing, the characters arcs, the themes, the progression, is all written so well. Every season feels complete in itself, yet a part of a whole, and the writers actually made good use of the constraint of keeping it kid friendly. It was something that me and my girl watched together keenly so it's got a special place in my heart.
Also, the re-watch value is just ++ -
Most of the stuff mentioned here.
Especially in the 90s/00s, my list would be mostly Battlestartrekgatewarsgalactica.
Doctor Who (2005-current) is amazing. At times it gets very campy, overly British with a lot of deus-ex-machina solutions -- but many episodes and story arcs are absolutely unrivaled in Science Fiction. -
Apart from that, many cartoons.
Futurama should be recognized by the UN as cultural heritage. Super serious brilliant science fiction, but simultaneously a hilarious SF parody.
I used to watch Simpsons/South Park/Family Guy a lot, but well, meh. Their concepts were fun, but eventually lost their shine a bit.
I'm still a huge fan of Adventure Time, some of the best fantasy-rich trippy universe building in a children's cartoon I've ever seen.
Talking about universe... Steven Universe is definitely top 10 for me as well. The last season had a few annoying patronizing-woke narratives in my opinion, but overall the series is very well written.
Also, since I have a toddler running around the house... I used to poke fun at bronies (well, fandoms in general are kind of weird and sad), but I do have to admit that MLP:FiM is really a cut above all the other lame low budget crap made for toddlers -- I do find it enjoyable to watch together with my daughter. 🤷♀️🦄 -
@johnmelodyme
I do somehow feel like it's rare for new series to hit that same level, compared to the classic nerd-stuff mentioned here.
I mean I've watched a lot of the popular Netflix series over the last bunch of years...
The Witcher. Dirk Gently. Umbrella Academy. Stranger Things. Altered Carbon. Queens Gambit. Locke and Key, Dracula, Lucifer, Modern Family, The Good Place, Shadow and Bone, Final Space, Disenchantment, fucking hell even Sabrina and probably a few dozen others...
I can't really fault any of them.
Perfectly valid, amazing entertainment. But for some odd reason... Also perfectly forgettable.
The first time I saw "The Measure of a Man" in Star Trek TNG, or "The Why of Fry" in Futurama, or the usual story arc "denouement" in Doctor Who -- It felt... neck-hair-raisingly cerebral.
Maybe I'm just a product of my era, unable to appreciate the genius of Squid Game, or Paw Patrol.
Or maybe the brilliant pieces of art are truly getting more rare. -
@bittersweet wow that's a lot .... Damn I begin to realise I spent time in tutorial video in udemy and YouTube most of the time 🤣🤣🤣
-
I do need to add one honorable mention: Fringe.
That series was so freaking off-the-rails, moving rapidly from "Oh another generic FBI action/thriller series" to "Well that's an interesting supernatural detective show" to "What the fuck kind of psychedelic hardcore science fiction is this"
And it wouldn't be fair to glance over Avatar: The Last Air-bender either.
Both Black Mirror and Love Death & Robots also deserve to get the "Way above average" mention.
Hmm I think I might be here a while.... -
@johnmelodyme
Oh, I'll probably make a lot of enemies with this statement, but:
Fuck Game of Thrones.
For someone who loves fantasy and scifi, trying to watch that was such a fucking cuck experience. It's like: FUCKING JUST SHOW ME DRAGONS AND NECROMANCERS ALREADY.... nooooo instead you're forced to stare at medieval muddy floppy cocks, rusty swords and sad characters dragging their feet over flagstones while they bitch at each other like cheap soap characters for half a season.
What a poopy series. -
I also appreciate all the TNG love in this post. I’ve watched through every season at least twice. Tried watching DS9 and voyager but couldn’t get into it as much. I’ve realized I’m more of a Patrick Stewart fan than an actual trekkie.
If you’re into crime/thriller shows also check out mind hunter and ozark on Netflix. -
huh, mr. robot.
awesome show.
5 minutes into the first episode reminded me why i want to kill myself most of the time.
awesome show.
couldn't get past the first season because the emotion monologues were hitting too close to home.
awesome show. will never watch again. -
@wackOverflow Mind hunter is cancelled after the first season 😢😢😢
Have you watched Star Trek: Picard? One of the best 20’s sci-fi I’ve ever watched -
@shehanthamel there’s two seasons already out? I thought they were releasing the third soon.
I’ve been wanting to watch Picard. I just got paramount+ so maybe I’ll watch it over the weekend. -
@Midnight-shcode I just remembered your comment and I wish to disagree that all other are crap. Star Trek Lower Decks is good one.
-
@darkwind
lol
lower decks is the one that proved me wrong when I thought there can never be a shittier travesty of anti-startrek than Discovery and Picard was.
