    @linuxxx It's beautiful isn't it? Although I do live in Liverpool, I'm actually in Wales right now.

    @prototype Fair enough! Looks beautiful yeah :)

    I see that laptop a lot around here...

    @SirWindfield because it's a great laptop :)
  • 1
    @prototype which one is it?
  • 2
    @SirWindfield it's a Dell XPS 15 9560
  • 1
    RESTful

    @prototype I wondered whether or not to buy that model. Is it worth it? Unfortunately there not many laptops (except apple) worth buying. So many companies won't build laptops of good quality. Here I especially think of the mouse pad which are utterly crap on most laptops

    @devs I feel confident in recommending it. For one, it's smaller and more portable than my dads MacBook Pro, which I must admit you do pay a premium for; there are definitely much cheaper ways to get the same specs. But the build quality is great, I love the touchpad with the multi finger gestures, the keyboard is great to type on. The only thing I don't like is the IRST accelerated hard drive setup. It's not that it's slow, but it can't outperform a pure solid state setup. I'm definitely going to upgrade the M2 drive and use it as the boot drive in the near future.

    @prototype as long as there are m2 slots on the motherboard, it doesn't matter too much i guess. I'm just so damn tired of macOS. I just don't want to compromise on build quality, which you often do unfortunately

    @devs put arch on the mac. But I get your arguments. Never had a laptop that felt as good as a MacBook in my hands. The aluminum just feels solid and I have to admit, Apple does fore sure design/produce the best TouchPads. They feel really great.

    But the price is damn high. I bought one (my first) one year ago. Just for the sake of using one once in my life. I mean, you need to have one before you can surely say that you like them /like them not. I personally wouldnt buy one again. There are other laptops out that offer more for less, but a lot of them lack build quality and feel cheap with all that plastic. You probably need to pay around 800-900 bucks to get something that also feels good in your hands. But it's still less than a MacBook.

    BTW, not sure what has driven cook to remove the magaafe port, just wtf. I imo since jobs passed away, Apple didn't made any innovative products. Job was really an inspiring personality. Nowadays I would say that Microsoft tries alot of newstuff

    @SirWindfield @devs I do agree that in terms of build quality the MacBook Pro is *probably* the best there is. But the XPS, I have to say comes very close... It has the aluminium casing like the mac, although the inside is plastic. Personally I prefer the feel of it over the mac, it's soft on the wrists but still feels solid. It comes down to personal preference I suppose. As a side note, I was also very impressed with Dell customer support, they were very helpful.

    @prototype good to here. I probably won't buy a laptop any time soon. But looks like I'll keep an eye on dell products now :)

    Jesus, that thing is as expensive as a MacBook. That'll explains why you get much more power for your bucks.

    @SirWindfield I were actually thinking about getting arch as well, I'm just worried about compatibility issues. Atm I have kali on it, and it works like shit. It can't even turn off without holding the shutdown button down.

    Another issues I have with my mac is that I ALWAYS have issues with connecting to screens / projectors.

    @devs I actually never tried to connect mine to a display.

    Give it a try, maybe it's working out.

    @prototype I'm just a bit worried to waste money on something that aren't living up to standards. I had an XPS before which is utterly bullshit. It can't even boot bios anymore. My experience weren't very good with Dell laptops, however I have heard they upped their game

    @SirWindfield I was also thinking about getting the latest HP Spectre, it has the same build quality as Macs. You just can't buy it in Europe, so that's a no as well for me I guess

    Balcony or boat?

    @Dittoslash Balcony! But at times it can look like you're out at sea, the house is about 6m from the edge of the lake and the waves get get rough sometimes.

    @prototype
    Are you running Windows 10 or did you install a Linux distribution?
    I'm thinking of getting the XPS 15 and putting Arch on it.
    Either that, or go for the XPS 13 DE and then put Arch.

    @QuantumAtom I'm just using W10. I've not really gotten into Linux yet. I think maybe when I finish uni I'll look into it.

    Must be terrible. I feel your pain. How could you ever see what's on the screen with all that glare from the sky and water?
  • 1
    I've never understood how people can work outside. The glare would be terrible!
  • 0
    @riekena You know, it's not bad! Perhaps it's the laptop screen, but I've not had a problem with glare at all.

    eww your serup has too much sun.
    There should be no sun
    There can be no sun!!!!

    Exactly what i dream
    But seriously you don't wanna see my setup
    It's a tiny room and near the entrance at my home

    @devs It's not my favorite distro, but Mint on a MacBook works great out of the box in my experience. Only problematic part is the cam, which I don't care about.
