"Hi X, I'm getting some push back on a bigger hard drive seeing as you'll be on the only person in the company who has something bigger than 250GB. Are you able to give me the headline values of how you've used up 249GB so far please?"

    That’s ridiculous of them, but nevertheless, if you are on Windows download and install WinDirStat - it will show what’s going on.

    Could well be email, the Windows SxS folder where it holds all the updates, temp files, Node modules, etc

    For a dev it should be easy to write a little program to fill up the space with some random data.

    I think the rant is that they'd expect you having used 249 out of 250 GB. Waiting until then is quite risky, as (a) SSDs shouldn't be filled at that rate if you want them to survive long and (b) you might run into lots of trouble when you run out of space.

    And also that they might be cheap (in a way that compromises costly developer time). If 250 GB should be enough really depends on your stack / environment / codebase.
