i got into reddit recently (yes never tried reddit before). I love it. and i always loved devrant but now i cant stop wondering... couldnt have all this been replaced with a subreddit?

(i tried looking into tech subreddit, but still didn't find a tech ranting subreddit yet which im finding to be very odd)

    Yes, just like all subreddits could just as well have been sections of any other forum. But it's bad if all speech goes through one host. The best system would be a decentralised one, but having multiple somewhat independent hosts is a good compromise.

    I also think the smaller scale of devRant keeps it off the radar.

    Reddit could get into trouble for one of its more controversial subreddits, then everyone will be hit by the fallout.

    Can’t see the MSM getting bent out of shape by devRant posts.

    I think Reddit is pretty handy. I use the Apollo client. Reddit seems to be generally less rabid…but maybe because I only follow particular subs.

    One difference is reddit has a nested thread structure and devrant is flat. That type of thing tends to lead to quite different conversations.

    And having separate forums tend to grow different cultures.

    I used to think "why did Facebook buy Instagram, why isn't there just a picture mode on Facebook?"
    But the mere idea of having a narrower focused app means people behave differently and post different stuff.

    @jiraTicket

    Facebook bought the user base of Instagram. It wasn't about anything code- or infrastructure-related.
