Blame corporation and their pRoPrIeTaRy shit formats
Everybody refuses to talk to each others or else god forbid they would risk losing their walled gardens -
@Drunkzee Fuck autodesk. They are a cancer to the industry. I refuse to use their products. Plenty of competition out their. I needed a cad for my last job. So I got Corel Cad. It was really really good.
-
It gets even worse if you consider that different geometry kernels dont support certain features that other ones do
Trying to convert between the two becomes a nightmare
Edit: obligatory take a look at solve space, probably the best open source option out there -
Collada? gLTF? I wish all of this was as simple as to toggle modifiers in Blender. Come to think of it, it sucks that it's something purely internal. 😒
A bit offtopic, but just wanted to rant about how declarative side of 3D is in the dark. Although, there are few golden apples in this field. CAD Sketcher, for example: https://www.cadsketcher.com/ -
@NoMad well I said the best open source
Still years behind commercial software like fusion
Not a huge fan of freecad though, feel like that project in itself is a mess -
NoMad141762y@LotsOfCaffeine might be. Still could output a decent stl file. Others just messed it up.
-
@NoMad you got freecad to produce decent STLs?
I gave up once it irrevertibly corrupted a file with like 2-3 hours of work in it, never touching it again.
solvespace instead seems more focused, only a simple, constraint-based 3D modeller, instead of all the things freecad tries to be. -
OK, I said that it was "a bit offtopic", but since you talk about CADs, I gotta highlight this option again.
CADSketcher plugin for Blender. It's not yet fully stable. However, it may be a fresher that actually can produce something compliant for you. -
NoMad141762y@LotsOfCaffeine I did, but then it failed at collada. Then I switched to blender. Lol.
-
NoMad141762y@vintprox didn't even need that one. Newer blender kinda does a good deal of work. The only downside is it can't deal with step files.
I did at one point do the thing, where I got freecad to export a glft or whatever. Then I imported that in blender. Downside, it didn't slice that in blender so the thing is just one blob of object. Upside, it did import.
If 3D design software could agree on the same fucking format being used the same fucking way, that'd be greaaaaaaaattttt!
