I just ask an intern to comment a Java class I send him (for practice). He asked what should he use to open the file, because, he said, "Word, messes it up"

Seriously, what are they teaching at schools?

Held coding internship interviews a few months ago.

    None of them could code.

Settled with a physics student that could do maths and solve problems.

He's here for a year, we'll teach him the coding bit. Probably end up with a better coder for it.

@alwaysmpe Nice, the sad about this guys is that they are about to graduate they have like 1 month left, and still don't know anything

@alwaysmpe keep ranting about how that pans out

@ronakkaria he starts in September and I'll be managing some of his projects so you might hear more then! But as I'm from a physics background too I have a little faith!

@alwaysmpe thinking that hanselman comes from a economics background, I have a lot of Hope in you guys

@linuxbrother11 Hope you will, you don't have to know everything just be willing to learn, and you will ... a lot

How the fuck did this kid land the internship to start with?
  • 2
There's still a small chance he was joking, eh?
  • 3
@dontPanic No, no joking, he really ask me that

    What country is that in?

@jpichardo ah, of course, nepotism. It's always nepotism... 😒

@Koolstr the hiring manager is a monkey. **stares at my employer**

    They teach nothing dude!!

    People save files like: "abc.java.txt"
And then cry when the file is not found or something.
    Idiots!

And here I am sitting, with actual experience and skill in Java and a several other languages, a sold commercial product, freelance experience, a year from graduating, getting turned down by every company I've applied for so far. 👌

@b-atanasov you're overqualified, they're just looking for code monkeys that they can train to be even monkier.

Just need to act slightly smarter than a 🐒, that's how I got my current job and why I now rant a lot about 🐒 🐒 🐒

@billgates but I live in the UK. Here it's mandatory that they pay you for an internship. I get it in countries where they can take an idiot for free and kinda train them. It's like, why do they hire all the fuckups from my course first, instead of hiring me, when I could be 10x more useful, and they need to pay either of us.

@b-atanasov maybe the boss (and hiring manager) is a monkey and he's worried you will replace him

    @billgates That's the plan 🤓

Honestly I don't remember how many times I've wanted to go "I told you so" over the years...
  • 3
@b-atanasov well dude, don't give up, that intern already left and I'm sure u will find a good job where u'll feel comfortable and with opportunities to grow

Honestly that is a serious failure in education, I have yet to see someone that comes out from a bachelor or master or even technical high school with a complete lack of knowledge on his job
