A certain app I use occasionally has some premium features that I have been too cheap to buy. Just found the full source code on GitHub. An hour later I have all the premium features for free. Stealing? Nah, my conscious is clear.

To all indie devs out there: if you have paid features, don't make the app open source.

So you advise devs to not make paid features open source to prevent people like you... but your conscience is clear?

To be honest. Don't be an asshole and buy the dev some beer.

Not all users can download from GitHub and get it running.

Be thankful to the dev that they open source instead of criticizing.

@g-m-f I'm not quite sure what there is to justify. Everything I did complies 100% with the license included with the code.

Regarding the topic, starving devs, like starving artists, need the kindness of benefactors to put food on the table.

@ryanmhoffman paid features in open source projects are not there to prevent you from using them without paying, they're there because the dev needs to eat, but is a good-guy so he lets fellow developers build from source.
Similar to offering only paid support.

@Bikonja it's possible to open source only part of the code base. Including paid features in the open is just stupid.

It's not stupid to open source paid content. It's a friendly move. Because it will make the app you're using most probably better and safer.
Don't see the paid features as something secret what you are buying. It's more a way for you to give the dev something back and installation convinience.
But of course it sets some trust in the user base. Some will honor that and some won't.
