My GPU blocks the airflow from the lower front intake fan to the CPU, so I wanted to have a fan in the 5.25" drive bay directly targeting the CPU.

While that bay fits a 140mm fan nicely, there was no mounting point. I ended up making four fan struts out of the metal covers for the 5.25" inserts, the ones that you wiggle out. Drilled holes into the case, a bit of foam above and below the fan to seal the larger gaps, and done.

The trick is ofc that the 5.25" case covers are meshed and hence act both as air intake and dust filter. The CPU runs a few K cooler under load.

    @zlice A DVD writer. And yeah, sure, I will always have that as log as it's available.

    That PC even has a proper RS232 on the rear - I bought a PCI slot sheet that connects to the RS232 header that the mobo offers.

    @Demolishun They also make CPU coolers, cases, PSUs (I have their Straight Power 11 550W Platinum) and whatnot - geared towards low noise levels.

    @Demolishun It's a popular german brand :)

    Nice conversion, now it's functionally a modern high airflow case.

    Get a 4090 if you have the arm strength to lift it

    @TeachMeCode I have an RX 6650 XT because cheaping out on the monitor also allows cheaping out on the GPU. Plus that AMD doesn't use the new auto-ignite power connector and has proper OSS drivers for Linux.

    Nvidia would have to change an awful lot before I'd even consider buying anything from them.

    @Fast-Nop yeah plus it’s 265, a steal for what you get

    @TeachMeCode Mine was more expensive because I went with the Sapphire Nitro version with its remarkably low noise profile.

    Btw., the fan struts are mounted with plastic washers on both sides of the strut, and the usual metal washer on top of the plastic washer facing the screw head. That's meant to reduce vibration coupling even further, on top of the decoupling that the fan itself already has.

    I guess my hatred for PC noise is not normal anymore.

    @Demolishun IMO alpenföhn is the most hilarious cpu fan name, the literal translation is alpen=alps föhn=hairdryer
