Just buy some promising early access titles for cheap now and play them when they are done later.

@Demolishun That is why you either buy multiple games or buy only the ones which are looking like fun to play in their current state already. Also, having an active modding community as a base requirement is a good insurance too (but don't buy Steam Workshop games on other platforms - it sucks to have to go through dark market sites for downloading mods from the Workshop)..

When i hunt for games, i check the community/forum on GOG and Steam, update history and Youtube before i consider a game. Often i then wishlist the game and if it still looks promising after some weeks, i might actually buy it - normally on sale (i use steamdb.info to look up what actually is a sale and what isn't for the game in question).

@Oktokolo I rarely buy games that cannot be modded anymore. That is definitely a requirement it seems.

@Demolishun Yep, rarely is a game worth playing long term if it has no active mod community (the community part is important because i don't have time to make all mods myself). Checking what is available on nexusmods or the workshop wroks well to see what classes of mods the community has found out how to do. If there are only visual or stats mods, that is a bad sign...

But i also occasionally buy games that aren't modable. Some games are worth it even though they are only good for a single playthrough.
