Ever tried explaining GitHub to someone? I swear it's like trying to teach a dog to ride a bike. You can try, but it's probably not going to end well.
Okay, rant over. Back to coding... and dealing with merge conflicts... and pull requests... and GitHub issues... sigh.

I mostly explain it to tech muggles as a cooking recipe database where everyone can share their recipes and submit reports for possible errors / feedback.

Just that the cooking recipes don't make delicious meals, rather an application / web page or sth like that.

To "disintegrate" the myth of it being easy... Tell them it's a recipe book passed down 100s of generations and most of the times you don't even know what is written in the recipe as it's hard to read the handwriting from 100 years plus ago in a possible foreign language with ingredients that aren't really available anymore. Or that one doesn't wanna eat anymore....

but still you have to figure it out, cause otherwise you don't get money and starve.

So your everyday job is a mixture of archaeologist, finding out what one does in a seemingly ancient recipe database, playing detective to find out why the recipe doesn't work out so well and getting yelled at for stuff you didn't fuck up, cause it's you who got the ticket to work on the recipe... And management has no comprehension of time, priority or your health.
