Logged into the vm as root. Saw that there were some security updates pending. Ran apt-get upgrade. Lost all ssh access to the vm. FML

    Wait why? I do it all them time, my VM is always up to date and never lost SSH access, my VM is hosted on Vultr

    Same here, it happened to me last month. I think in that update ssh port was upgraded, but this is not possible. Luckily I had recent backup so restored it and then changed the ssh port. Now it's fine :)

    Managed to get into the console via digitalocean web admin. To be continued tonight!

    Problem solved by purging openssh-server and reinstalling it. (via the web interface console).

    Phew. Disaster averted. At least this wasn't an rm -rf /
