Yes. But If you don't want to do it I have a two-step trick that works pretty well for me.

First, never provide or install pirated software. If they "just" want windows and office, tell them it's going to be $100 (or whatever it is) for windows and explain them the different subscription choices available for office 365. Ask nicely which one do they prefer. And enjoy the look on their faces.

Second, always charge them for your work hours. Tell them it's going to be $60/hour but that they shouldn't worry. It won't probably take more than 4 or 5 hours...

You'll never be repairing PCs again. And if you do, at least there'll be some profit.

Somewhere a long time ago I did read about a beautiful analogy with astronomy: just because you're an astronomer it doesn't mean you know how to fix a telescope.

In my case, sometimes I just reply with "sorry, I'm just just some kind of mathematician, I'm not an IT guy"

@OneQ depends on the person. Of course I've done it for free for my mother, gf, father-in-law... I've charged other family members and I guess others don't dare to ask 🤣

Just fix their computers, it's not hard... You can then ask favors back.

It doesn't bother me when it's for family but one thing I don't appreciate is when people think you're a sort of "computer wizard" fixing every possible problem in no time and for free.
