Alright, I just wanna start off by saying that I'm a huge privacy guy. I hate all kinds of data collection companies like Google/Facebook/Amazon and all that. Yet I'm forced to have a Google account for certain reasons.

But the thing that I want to say is that I often talk to people to express my concerns about privacy. And most people agree and say that "yeah sure that's some scary shit" but don't actually do much about it.

And the thing is. If you just browse through all of the options in your Google account. You can turn off and remove almost all data collection/ad serving and identification options entirely.

And yet purple complain about that Google sees what you buy and shit. Turn everything off. Get and adblocker and get noscript. The single best browser add-on out there. It's almost that easy to get at least acceptable amounts of Internet privacy.

Please, don't ever ignore the significance of in Internet privacy. And the potential issue of net neutrality. Don't be ignorant. Don't be the client.

Meh. My data isn't special and I don't care who collects it at this point. I get the issue and everything, but I don't have the drive to give a fuck about it. I'd rather enjoy what there is now that's cool and fun to take advantage of by them knowing everything about me, because I'm a fat fuck who's likely gonna die someday soon.

Hmm...it seems I have all the skills to be hired as someone's privacy consultant

    Worth?

@iam13islucky I have to agree with you there, I get the whole deal with people and privacy, but the problemw ith google not logging everything for me is it simply makes my life harder. While they mostly do all this crap to find better ways to make money off you, you still benefit from it. Since signing up with google play a little over a year ago, I have not once had to go look for music, I literally just listen tow aht google suggests and 99.9% of the tiem I enjoy it, as it has over a decades worth of data on me to detemrine what I would like.

Add to that search results are more accurate, the news it feeds me throguh google home, with the exception of teh last week was mostly things of actual interest to me, not sure why I am suddenly getting news about people getting attacked at KFC and guys jacking off outsides schools, but anyway.

To be honest, all this data they collect is going ot come back and bit humanity in the arse, thingk skynet and matrix, but at the same time, i will be dead by then and I am not having kids so I have no personal or paternal reasons to care about the AI apocalypse.

@VonKavalier eh, it's not that I have nothing to hide, I'm just too lazy to hide lol

@iam13islucky Haha I can relate to laziness then 😜

    @VonKavalier lol basically the TL:DR

@RTRMS That's like saying you don't care about global warming cause you'll be dead when it becomes a life threatening problem. Which is an even higher level of ignorance.

@kenogo Well at least its something.

Allow me to stir the pot:

[We're it not for the corrupting influence of greed] Performing big-data on the biometrics of 7+billion humans has the potential to advance medical science immensely

@Numinex ya, but you see, I do care about global warming, because that's us fucking up the earth, odds are skynet will help reverse all the damage we have done, through killing all of us.

Also, global warming has no benefits to me, it has not been fits to anyone, Google following my every more has tons of benefits, immediate, obvious benefits, and who's to say that if just one tinfoil hat wearers had taken off his hat, the AI apocalypse would of been avoided as a unique personality trait would of altered the evolution of our impending digital overlords.

@unfuckers-inc Sure everything has two sides.

@RTRMS Yeah and it everybody put on their hats there wouldn't be any impending robotic doom.

@Numinex ya, but then we would have no cellphone, no devRant, no gps, no fun.

@RTRMS You can have all of those things. Just don't willingly give away your private life.

I find it very annoying when people say 'ive got nothing to hide so I'll just use gmail/hotmail/whatsapp/fb' and so on.

Have you ever stopped to consider that people around you might not want to get involved with those services/their data stored at those companies?

'but it should be my choice what I use and other people can choose more privacy protective services'

True, but; how the hell am I going to keep my data out of the big data business bubble if I NEED to contact you but you only have gmail/whatsapp/facebook and I want to stay out of the bubble? You're not giving me much of a fucking coice, are you?

@kenogo Yup agreed. They can still use everything etc but just not show that on their fancy fronteds.

Congrats for the 10.000th post about how bad people are that aren't paranoid and don't use like 200 plugins and independent services to 'protect' their privacy. We get it

@wholl0p Everybody's got something that they think is especially important, this is my thing. You don't shit on people who spread their message of for example global warming and whatnot. Why do you shit on me just because I feel that this is important and I want people to know about it and protect their privacy? And you don't need 200 plugins and shit. In my experience you only need two. Ublock origin and noscript.

@Numinex First of all I'm not attacking you as a person, but I can't stand that every second "rant" sounds like it comes from a religious group that wants to brainwash us... It's okay that this matters to you but then like or comment an existing rant and stop posting this topic over and over and over again... People that are interested in this will find the dozens of posts.. I'm sorry when you are offended by my comment but that's my experience and I think this stuff doesn't belong to devRant (at least not that often)

@wholl0p Oh don't worry, you can just keep down voting as you wish! I hardly see stuff like this so if you see it so much, please tag me!
Also I think that this subject doesn't nearly receive the amount of attention that it deserves but hey, my opinion :)

@wholl0p Sure, I see your point. But I also agree with @Linuxxx there. You can just not read these rants. It's one or the other, either the people who make this kind of stuff stop making it. Or the people who aren't interested stop reading it. And I think that the second one makes more sense.
