DjSall15617yOnce my parents saw what kind of paychecks I could make by programming they stopped this kinda shit
-
tomando3097y@DjSall not quite at the point yet sadly, I'm only year 10 :( and doing everything from my school laptop (windows or live USB). Dad wants my to get into biology (sigh). I want to get into cyber security though so hopefully I'll get there

When I was a kid I used to stay up late in my room coding, browsing internet, etc. Used to have a routine in the early hours where I would hear my dad walking down the hall towards my room (the bathroom was next to my room), I would have to quickly turn of the monitor (large, bright crt) so that he would not see the light around the door crack and yell at me for being up late.
One day this happened, I sat in the dark at my computer screen waiting to hear him do the return trip to his room. I hear the bathroom door open and the door close, then in the most authoritative voice he could I heard "I know your on the computer, get to bed before I take it away" from the other side of my door. I think my heart stopped at that moment.
From that point on I did everything I could to light proof the gaps in that door. -
tomando3097y@DjSall you must know what it's like then. Even the teachers at my school aren't much use. I've accelerated any computer programs and all they do is touch lightly on VB (kms). They don't even understand what's happening behind the scenes, let alone have a half decent conversation with me about anything
-
tomando3097y@skprog I'm trying my very best to. Anything that I can find I will do lol. I find it enjoyable, like the problem solving so I don't mind it. I figure it's best to be comfortable with this stuff before I get to uni and what not, and if I enjoy it and have it as my hobby why not do it?
-
tomando3097y@querellaMMXII that's nearly me. I'm not allowed technology in my room (parents are both secondary school teachers so it's super strict) but I'll be up late every night after homework squeezing in a little bit of coding time. Waking up after 5 hours sleep getting ready for a 14 hour day out of the house is always justified if I feel like I achieved or learnt something the previous night

Yeah man I swear, girlfriend, parents, friends see me on the computer and practically invision me watching porn or playing counterstrike.... Like wtf do you think I'm doing over here this shit isn't a game. "Do something productive" like bitch wtf you think I'm doing? Probably the most fucking productive thing I can be doing that isn't menial labor.
-
tomando3097y@ctmalloy haha yep same here. Girlfriend is supportive but dad'll constantly ask what I'm doing and trawl through router logs to find anything lol
-
cortex42997y@tomando Welcome!
I also wanted to study biology first but then I heard that it's almost impossible to get a job there. Now I'm doing my master's degree in computer science with a focus on security. Just show your dad how much money you can make in that field. Hopefully this convinces him ;) It's YOUR life. So just do what you like to do. -
tomando3097y@cortex42 im not a fan at biology. I'm not bad at it but I'm extremely squeamish. If I wanted to do anything else it'd be engineering or architecture or something. Dad used to be a biologist but he became a teacher because there was no work so I don't know what is point is there. I'm sure I'm going to find my own way though, there's always going to be something to make things difficult you've just gotta figure out how to fix it (low key tying into original rant). Good luck with your degree!
-
tomando3097y@illusion466 I 100% agree with you. Multiple skills is definitely important, and anyone who wants to study biology I have nothing against at all, it's important not to box yourself into a career. It's just biology isn't for me, I can't handle the gore stuff, although it's interesting. I'm doing Chem though which I enjoy

I'm almost 35 years old and I really relate to this topic...
Mummy thinks that internet (computer related stuff) is just porn, games and a waste of time...
Well I wouldn't know what I know today without the nights without sleep while programming, or more importantly the time I spent playing dune 2, doom, heretic.... -
welcome to the world of being unable to pay rent for your own apartment. I can feel your pain
-
@querellaMMXII Same here. Only difference is that sometimes my cat opens my door (I don't know how but when alone, he opens completely closed doors) and I freak out even more.
-
I've had this situation so many times untill my 18y/o... And now my girlfriend's doing this 😣
-
@tomando dude my family unplugs the modem when theybthink ive been too much time there
-
tomando3097yOhhhh that's tough. Dad blocks me from the internet after dinner but I just asked the neighbor for their password. Taught me that there's always another way
-
karmak10827y@DjSall I'm in 12th grade as well, where do you find jobs and what do you do? I'm trying to find something but it's impossible for me to compete with the high ranked people on upwork and freelancer.
-
DjSall15617y@karmak I don't make any money yet.
I just showed them some job advertistments for programmers.
When I was 13, I used to sell minecraft plugins, but that's all.
