My girlfriends mom asked whether I could fix her coworkers laptop. She claimed that it had viruses installed and laptop is laggy..

So... I got that laptop just now, got home and turned it on. It doesn't have WiFi drivers installed and I do not have any free Ethernet cable right now.

About the lags... Well you won't believe how many custom tool bars and security programs there were. McAffe, AVG, ESET and some Russian made firewall which asks for license key every 5mins.

And she asked me to reinstall windows and keep every file of hers, and she didn't bother to point which files of 300gb of photos/videos/docs are worth keeping and which are not.. HDD is 300GB :A fuck me

P. S. Since it's my first rant I can say ranting helps a lot to calm down

If I were you, all I'd be thinking about is the possibility of a reward from my girlfriend. Stick it out buddy. It could be worth it.

I remember that type of things back when I used to provide some of that annoying work, when a user had a laptop beyond clogged with shit like that and more and if they didnt had any type of special software on it just copy the personal files to an external drive go and do something else then when its finished do a clean reinstall and then reinstall drivers chrome, media player and recopy all their shit back and dunno go play something in the midtime or fap or iunno ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@legionfrontier normally I would do that, but neither I have an external drive which would have 300GB free on it neither I'm willing to pay any cloud object storage for such thing. I'll just get my shit together and will clean that PC as good as I can, training patience always help :D

@gitversion if you dont have even that space in your current pc (if you do temporaly hook the drive to it then) that you could do is just free some space from the drive, then partition it and move those files there and then delete system32 and proceed to install Gentoo on it! ... or whatever Windows version she is using
  • 4
@gitversion use git LFS? Then pull it all back after you clean install

@luper awesome, will check it out, however, for future use cases :)

Ask money to do it. People have to pay for their error, or they will never learn anything

    Just focus on the reward....

And the next PC you'll have to fix after you did an "outstanding" work with this one 😂😂😂

I've more then once not fixed a computer because I knew I would be labeled as the computer guy

@thedev I suppose I'm already in that life loop.

    I'm sorry for you...

And your girlfriend... She has to pay for all of it... 😂😂😂😂😂

@ThatDude never knew that free space exists somewhere on the Internet :D

She was kinda right... If she had these toolbars, her computer was infected

I usually just run JRT and Malwarebytes, and uninstall every extra antivirus and toolbar. That takes care of most of it. Rarely do you actually need to reinstall Windows.

@Niteraleph I believe most of them had a check mark checked whether you wish to install them as additional feature or not. It shouldn't count as infected if you were the one who installed it.. Anyways, job's done she's happy windows user again

More over you haven't explained about the ram installed. I am sure the laptop must be an accountant's machine :p

    >save all files
    >wipe drive, like 0 that fucker out
    >clean install
    >lighteningfast.png
    >but no files
    >she asks to have them back
    >you say you can restore them
    >but for a small fee
    >she takes it to other specialist
    >she realizes how expensive they are
    >but it wouldn't matter
    >drive is wiped.
    >she cames back to you.
    >offer 10% cheaper price than big guys
    >Profit

    >install your own virus
    >make it go berserk on her shit every 10 months
    >she'll come crawling back to you to fix it
    >EXTRA PROFIT

Also FYI all new phones have personal hotspot via Bluetooth or USB so you shouldn’t have any issue getting online.

@iSwimInTheC you surely do know how to make money lol. That's a valuable business plan

I feel you. My GF can do most of that by herself, only thing I've done is build her a "gaming" PC for some Battlefield 3 etc. But I've helped people at University with all this stuff and now whenever I'm in some random class where someone has IT issues, people turn to me to fix it. Only way out without seeming rude is "sorry I really have no idea how to fix that" even though the solution sometimes could be quite simple. But people should just learn to do it themselves, it's not that hard. And if not, they should pay.

    @Collie

    This, fucking this.

Tell her to buy a 500 GB SSD. Then you can fix it like she wants for much cheaper than it would normally cost. You get major brownie points from her mom... Who you want on your side. Plus it won't take as long to fix on an SSD and she gets a performance boost.
