Was in a meeting(been quite a lot actually) with a lot of people that hold "director" in their title. As per our institution's salaries and ranking description, they do not "outrank" me. Our titles are just different, but they are there with me.

It surprises them quite a bit when they try to have some hold in the direction of my department just for me to tell them that they do not really get to tell me what to do or how to do things after I show them said chart. It surprises them a bit more when they find out what I am saying is completely true.

I don't appreciate people trying to manhandle my employees.

The conversations that follow are quite interesting as I am quite vocal in our interactions.

Titles don’t mean much anymore tbh

It's a pet peeve of mine clearly asserting the lack of power of those kind of people.

I enjoy so much watching their facial veins bulge when they realize their shiny title, be it a facade or real, but unrelated, power, doesn't automatically make everyone else blindly follow their every whim.

Bonus points of you do it to fortune 500 execs.

Ask them to direct your new movie

Friend of mine got a job at a place where *every* developer is called "director of engineering", because apparently "everyone should be directing their own engineering effort."

Meanwhile another friend's title is just "software engineer" even though he's the highest ranked engineer in the company, because the other guys have a title of "software developer" instead.

    Job titles are entirely meaningless.

Good job protecting your guys 👍

I've always got the sense that some department managers easily fold when a higherUp tries to boss their team, because they assume "that's just the way chain of command works around here" but then a new manger with some gravitas begins and just has none of it and turns out that worked fine.

Some departments in my org seem to get bossed around a ton while others get to do what they want.

@jiraTicket it does happen quite a bit and I see it. It sucks, but I know what it felt like to get royally fucked by having a spineless manager.

It's like that scene from office space where he says he has eight bosses.

    Except instead they're "directors."

So many damn directors, you'd think they were making a porno.
