Depends on what you want to learn. Linux can also be used as a complete idiot.

@tracktraps agreed. Even if you use Linux as a complete idiot,you might end up screwing your PC max. But the bright side is, it teaches you how to solve a problem on your own which i think is something every programmer's must have skill.

Try installing Arch Linux based on the official docs. This way you'll learn a lot about Linux and its components.

Or - one step further - Gentoo or LFS.

@kenogo I fucked my Ubuntu build, it can be done. I installed a pre-alpha version of an android emulator and it overwrote some of the the kernel. It didn't work to well after that.

@luper Why don't you use Docker for experiments like this?
