COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC

I know there are many germans in this community, so I wanted to ask you guys. Why has Angela Merkel won so many elections? I don't know about any other non-dictator that has been in the head of the government for so long? Is she really that good or is it just that the competition is terrible?

Also what is the general consensus about her? Do people usually like her or think she's a good politician? I'm mainly asking because nobody here likes Rajoy. And absolutely no one would ever say he's a good guy.

I'd really like to hear your opinion on this

    One of the previous chancelors was Helmut Kohl, he won just as many elections.
    Why she wins one election after another? Because she doesn't do many controversial things and our society loves stability over everything. And tomorrow at election day she will be in power for another 4 years...

    But of course that's just a short wrapup about a complex question.

    @plusgut Oh boy, four more years of Merkel on the news. Her opponent is the Edeka guy, isn't he?
  • 1
    @tracktraps I don't know about edeka guy, but her opponen is Martin Schulz, or as he calls himself Chulz

    @plusgut so what's the general consensus about her? What do people usually say when they talk about Merkel? Do they like her? Hate her? Insult her at every chance they have?

    @plusgut Yes, Martin Schulz, forgot that name. He was the department head of customer satisfaction in an Edeka ad. That was years ago.

    @ocab19 uff, hard question. To which I have no good answer.
    But I'll try anyway: I believe that most people don't have strong emotions to her at all. Some people of course hate her, but in general lots of people are just okay with her. And there is sadly not much alternative.
    And the way our election works, we don't elect chancelor directly. That's what the parlament does.

    To me personally: I don't like her politics at all, it's far to conservative and to liberal to big companies.

    @plusgut oh, ok. I'm just so used to seeing the president being called an idiot (pretty much every one we've had since the 70s deserve it tbh) that I was curious to see if there was one somewhere that people actually liked

    Well... in Italy we've had Berlusconi for more than 2 decades so, no, I'm not surprised
    for the rest I don't really know
  • 1
    @lo98be I see your point. Is he running for president again?
  • 2
    @ocab19 I didn't undestand... maybe, maybe not
    it's a serious possibility and I hope people won't vote for him

    @plusgut As I've heared, most people hate her due to her immigration policy.
    This requires savings that the citizens have to pay.

    @linuxxx There are rules - you're absolutely right. But this topic is also interesting for developers from Germany.

    I don't want to be the moralizer, but because of Merkel there is now the "Cyber Task Force" (that's the real untranslated name) in Germany, which means constant surveillance like the NSA does.

    Apart from the fact that the "Cyber Task Force" is a joke, it costs huge amounts of taxpayers' money, which affects everyone. Of course, the developers are also affected by this - after all, they have to pay tax on their income as well.

    @tracktraps Fair enough! As I said, didn't want to be an asshole and what you're saying now is something that actually interests me as well :P.

    Just wanted to point that out and now please continue with the discussion.

    I'll remove my previous comment as I think you are right.

    @elcore I don't think there is any real difference.

    BSI = Federal Office for Information Security
    BND = Federal Intelligence Service

    The "official" task of the Cyber Task Force (a special unit of the BSI) is to fight against "Fakenews".
    "Fakenews" means nothing more than hiding (critical) information from the general public.

    Do you really think that the BND and the BSI are not working together?

    @elcore That's why I put "official" in quotation marks :)
