I had to install arch on an exfat partition so that windows 10 wouldn't automatically reformat it on startup.
-
see, windows always tells me my usb drives and hard drives have problems and need to be formatted, but still let me access them
windows is dumb -
nickj51717yomg same thing happened to me a few years back but i didnt know about linux back then so i lost everything. i formatted the hdd and was left with nothing
-
@demiko every time I boot, win 10 goes into "emergency drive recovery" then either reformats or try to overwrite any ext4 partitions.

bahua129047yI put my pictures on my owncloud instance on a digitalocean VPS, on resizable block storage using xfs as the filesystem. I am thinking of switching to object storage though. Way more storage for way less money. I just need to get it webdav-accessible so I can easily get to it from anywhere.
-
@bahua I use a service which offers 1tb free. Very good service and company but only available for dutchies.
I encrypt everything locally before uploading it as well! -
@daemonAD Not entirely sure (except for with the google maps api I thought) but I tried it with multiple fake things and it deffo did not work. Next to that they also do IP geolocation checks!
-
@daemonAD Yup that often works! Uploading/downloading works fine from outside the country by the way :)
-
@@daemonAD Let me rephrase that to 'Uploading/downloading works fine from outside the country. Based on what I've experienced myself'.

Yeah after having "scan and fix this device" format a flash drive I quickly learned to reset the dirty bit on my drives. Windows is fucking stupid with "corruption", and the only thing that makes a disk "dirty" is a single bit stored in its information somewhere and is set according to who even knows what conditions.
-
@linuxxx Yeah, I ALWAYS do disk repair/rescue stuff on Linux - even if I'm on a windows PC I insert a live usb stick for that purpose.
It's a lot less complicated, you have more options and better tools. -
samir11807yIf the external hard disk was the only copy of your pics than I wouldn't call it a back up. Just storage.
-
Cyanite85577yEvery day windows yells at me saying my HDD is currupted, but reads and writes to it just fine.
-
No shit - I did this years back. Same thing happened when I was fist learning linux but I didn't stop to think that it might work again with my linux stuffs....I formatted it at Windows whim >:( it was mostly books and music but still a ton of data nonetheless. I wish I wasn't as stupid as I was at the time.
-
I would have cried if my primary photo albums were corrupted although I wouldn't have trusted Windows enough to rely on it without checking in another OS first.

cursee171597yNot related to this rant thread but I just found that if a user changed name, the previous comments with the name became very weird. I was reading at the early comments and wondering who is that demiko person 🤔😌
Had an external hdd for backing up family photos etc. (back when I just discovered Linux and still used windows as well)
Connected it to my windows system and it said that the thing was corrupt and i had to format it.
Well fuck, a few hundred gb's of pictures, memories, backups etc etc probably lost. (keep in mind I didn't know that much about computers at that point)
Was about to format that thing with literally tears in my eyes when I thought I'd, because why the fuck not since I was out of options anyways, try it as well on my Ubuntu installation.
EVERYTHING WAS STILL ON THERE AND PERFECTLY ACCESSIBLE.
After a very much rage attack on windows I formatted the windows partition and used that as a backup space as well :).

nope not in for tags fuck off
