I'm from the south but living in the north now (Bremen) and yes, 'Moin' is indeed something you have to get used to :D -
TobyAsE28117yThe best part of Moin is that it is very universal. You can use it the whole day (in contrast to good morning and the such). While it is not very formal you can use it to greet a customer (if your relationship is better than you want to kill each other and the customer is also from the north) without being unrespectful as well as your friends or even complete strangers. It has a whole set of meanings that no other greeting covers. Gotta love platt.
