I'm still confused on translating what I have learned as a computer science student to real work in the real world. Any suggestions or help I can get?

Computer science : Someone that can only be taught with practical and you will finally start to understand it before your retirement

I actually found algorithms and data structures really helpful.
If you want to learn practical stuff take a look at spring framework.

Addition: working with spring I learnt more than in University. Dependency injection, aspect oriented programming and especially that there are always smarter people doing most of the stuff for you.
This is pretty awesome. It just takes some time and probably lots of reading. But it's completly worth.
