After almost two years working as a Linux Sysadmin, I have found out that every developer needs a Sysadmin.

Yep. I don't mind doing things myself but I wouldn't be as effective without my CTO/sysadmin handling the infrastructure. No time for both if you want to do either of them effectively.

I agree, and I have heard some devs arguing that sysadmins will be exint in a few years because devops will take over lol

I would think that us sysadmins will simply would get more into devops if this would happen, the infrastructure still needs to be maintained by professionals. I am having a good relationship to devs I am supporting and we are relying on each other and communicate a lot. None of them want take care about it additionally to their normal workload.

I'm the developer, sysadmin, helpdesk, and everything in-between where I work. Wish I could focus just on programming...

In fact, I think my boss read my mind. He's letting me interview people to take over my sysadmin/helpdesk roles so I can just code :)

If you have your infrastructure in AWS and use containers/kubernetes you dont need a sysadmin only devops 😀

And if you work at AWS you realize you will need Sysadmins to provide the infrastructure so the devops can click and play :) Same as saying AI or machine learning will replace developers at a given time, will simply not happen :) Old boring flame war :)

@hugh-mungus true but that's true for any server you rent. Even bare metal old school servers are the same. Unless you own the hardware it's not your computer.

@marcom why? You use cloudformation it is infrastructure as code. That is the almost the hole point that you do infrastructure by code. No Sysadmins needed.

Companies that want to waste money AWS, Google Cloud, Azure and so on can do so. The aws deployments I have seen is not good.

Also, who are managing the IPS? It is a full time job only that.

@Linux there is a lot of services in AWS that give you insight what going on in a IPS/IDS perspective, but yes we have a team responsible for the security.

@nighter, I know AWS, you missed my point. I just said you will always need Sysadmins as whatever your infrastructure as code is running on, needs to be managed as well :) Physical data centers do not disappear in the cloud :)
