Does he not realize there's a better chance for getting a nice salary involved with programming than there is being a famous singer?

Let me guess, you are from Germany so: the voice of Germany?
I feel the same with my parents, happens a lot. -
@rhein7 nah xD, it's just the most popular one and no one watches DSDS anymore so

CWins48117yDon't know how techy your parents are, but it doesn't matter. Most parents will support or at least tolerate a lot if it sounds reasonable.
If you plan going to university or fachhochschule for computer science , the degree is "engineer" and while "Ingenieur" is somehow associated with someone building a tank or a volkswagen, it's usually all that matters for parents. Sounds like a stable career. Sounds more trustworthy than mobile-games or web-apps, so spare the details. -
cjbatz14717yDon't be afraid to tell your parent that you are disappointed in them if they are not supportive. Disappointment and the need for approval is a two way street.

@404response Wow... I’ve always thought it’s an SEA thing. Kinda surprised to see that the same ol mindset exists elsewhere too.

Watching some Talent-Show with my family. There is this 16-years old pretty good singing boy. My father looks at me and you can read from his face: "Why can't you do sth. like this ?"
The next day I show him some really good webapps and games I made and he just says "Well, I don't care until you make money with this."
