@junners try as many different desktops and distros as possible.

Try these Desktops:
KDE (for example Kubuntu 17.10),
GNOME (for example Ubuntu 17.10),
Xfce (for example Xubuntu 17.10),
Budgie (for example Ubuntu Budgie 17.10)

Also try these Distros:
Ubuntu based (including Linux Mint)
Archlinux based (for ease of use: Manjaro)
