How do you know they aren't just pump and dump?

@tahnik the ico of cardano is the ex ico of etherum. The concept is great, it's a new Blockchain written from scratch in haskell. It's provable secure and the project is solid and interesting. Check their website :)

It's an investment and most of the investments are risky. But if you are buying from reputable exchanges, they are never shady.
