Well that was a fun call I just had.
Owner of the company I freelance for: Hey I forgot to tell you something.
Me: What?
Owner: I bought you a plane ticket to fly to Puerto Rico. You're heading out in a month.
Me: What?! Why????
Owner: To set up cryptocurency mining rigs.
Me: Just because I know a bit about mining doesn't make me an expert.
Owner: We have $80k in our pocket in investments from outside parties, with another $20-30k on the way. You get 20% of the coins mined for as long as you manage it.
Me: So we're gonna set up several rigs, utilizing a b250 motherboard, g4400 CPU, 8GB of RAM and 10 GPUs each. We'll have AMD rigs for monero and Nvidia rigs for Ethereum and others. We'll use awesome miner for profitability switching on the fly. Each machine is probably going to be $5k each, possibly $4k with bulk discounts. We'll need at least 1500W per rig for power, 2000W to be safe, so we need to make sure we have ample power delivery to the mining warehouse.
Owner: I thought you weren't an expert?
Me: I'm not, but when there's money involved my motivation to Google goes into overdrive.28 -

EDIT: devRant April Fools joke (2021)
-------------------------
Hey everyone,
@trogus and I are happy to make an exciting announcement. With the rapidly increasing success of NFTs, we've decided the devRant community shouldn't miss out on this compelling new paradigm for user-generated content. So, we will soon be offering all rants as NFTs at auction.
To kick things off, we're going to first be offering the first ever rant posted to devRant (https://devrant.com/rants/489/...) at auction for a starting price equivelent to $100,000 USD. We think this is a fair starting price for such a significant piece of devRant history, and we anticipate the final sale price to be significantly higher.
We look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts on this new direction for the devRant community, and we can't wait to see the Rant NFT market take off!
Sincerely,
@dfox & @trogus30 -
The best time to buy bitcoin was when it was released
The second best time was a few years ago when it was only like $200/btc
The third best time was probably last year before they went up 650% in value
The worst time is apparently whenever I buy in14 -
You think a junior dev pushing his code onto a production server is bad? Wait till you have that admin who is illegally mining Bitcoin on your production server. 😂

In fact, because Adylkuzz(malware that mine cryptocurrency) had infected many vulnerable machines long before WannaCry and shut down their SMB port, the malware might have accidentally saved many potential victims from having their data encrypted by WannaCry. -
Why do so many people waste their time and their computers turning coal into heat? It really pisses me off.
Often I meet smart guys who are fairly decent coders and after what starts as an interesting conversation is instantly destroyed by cryptocurrency.
It is *exactly* like enjoying a discussion of the intriguing nuances of quantum chemistry only to have the guy say, "thats all cool, but how do you make meth?"
argh.
You want to use your decked out rig to make money? Fine. But please help us solve important problems instead of literally wasting electricity. Just google search "supercomputer physics" and you will find a thousand current problems requiring extremely fast computers for number crunching. All of them can make you more money than crypto and all of them help society at the same time.
We burn coal to make most of the electricity on this planet. Most coal stations burn around 20,000 tons of coal per day. The world burns about 250 tons of coal every *second*. This is converted into carbon dioxide. (coal = carbon, add two oxygens when you burn it, producing three times as much mass in CO2, which then goes out the smoke stack)
The big picture is this: currently we are forced to burn coal to make the world work. Turning off the boilers would result in an almost instant apocalyptic collapse of society. BUT, we don't need to burn it merely to produce waste heat in your video card array.
Please use your superpowers for good.

Can confirm bitcoin uses a lot of energy, I have been reading bitcoin tweets all day and I'm exhausted20
-
Tried mining ethereum today. Just wanted to check that out, for the heck of it. Fired off a p3.16xlarge instance on AWS, 4 x Tesla V100 running at $12 an hour! It was an absolute beast. Anyway, kept it running for 9 hours and earned about $5 before shutting it down. Cost me $108 to earn that $5. Had a lot of credits expiring in a couple of days, so I wanted to burn them off anyway.
So crypto mining, not easy money.9 -
Recenty I have studied a lot about Bitcoin and Blockchain. The technology behind these things is amazing. And people are going mad over it. But, are we really going to the right direction? I have doubts.
Bitcoin was targeted to be a decentralized system. But in the present scenario, if BTC.com, AntPool and ViaBtc somehow merge, they will own more than 51% of the total computational power of the Bitcoin network. And if that happens, they will have full control over the whole network and will be able to replace the whole Bitcoin Blockchain with their forged entries if they want. By the way, btc.com is China based and owns 29.6% of the total computational power of the Bitcoin mining network. Forget about merging, if btc.com grows independently, who can assure that they would never cross the 51% threshold? Same problem exists with other Blockchain systems too. Are these systems really decentralized as they advertise? I really doubt now.8 -

Just joined a company 1 week ago and I was tasked to build a cryptocurrency bot in trading view using pinescript. The problem here is that I have zero knowledge in trading, charts , indicators etc and Pinescript is such a miserable language and I am so bored of this.
On top of that, nothing here makes sense. Tried learning trading on my own and it is simply boring and I don't understand many things here such as RSI, ATR etc . Sometimes I feel like quitting this job because I feel that I cannot deliver and at the same time I am afraid that I am quitting too soon before even giving a try.22 -

It's ironic to see recruiters in linkedin who criticize bitcoin end up looking for blockchain developers.1
-
!dev
Decided to spend more time on LinkedIn to familiarise myself and start looking for potential employment opportunities.
For past month or so, I've seen few decent opportunities, which is a nice start. However, for every decent post, I've come across:
- About a hundred of posts by self-proclaimed crypto experts who spout absolute gibberish and somehow get thousands of likes. 5 min google search and absolute minimum knowledge of economic theory discards 99% of their claims and statements
- Handful of idiotic "career advice" blog posts
- Numerous posts, both bashing and helplessly supporting shitty recruiter practices
- more crypto nonsense
- People jerking themselves off for running a profitable business (company launched a 1-5months ago)
Really starting to hate the platform, seems like all the integrity it had before becoming fully mainstream, has gone down the drain and it's become a straight up corporate circle jerk1 -
When you need just simple plugin for the browser and what you get is a crypto miner fully utilizing single core :(2
-
devRanters beware! In-browser JavaScript crypto mining is becoming a thing.
https://coin-hive.com/
I found
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...
Which will block browser coin miners on Chrome for now. Other ad/script blockers might work (though not always guaranteed).
Currently, these miners don't limit their CPU usage (and neither does the browser) so it's not great for your PC use.
If implemented correctly, like only using for a few seconds or for captchas/link shorteners (as suggested on the Coin Hive site), this could be a nice alternative to ads. But there is a guarantee that many will start using this unethically and not even tell users, nevermind that they'll do it for the entire session of the site.
Add Service Workers to the mix and it's a bag of trouble.13 -
Got in a somewhat heated discussion earlier a'd wanted to get some more input...
Friend of mine has a community site for a game, and is running adds to pay for the hosting costs etc... He however has recently changed adds provider and now they've become more profitable but also a lot more obtrusive...
I suggested perhaps looking into getting something like coinhive, mining monero coins with your users browsers... He was really averse to it, but I think that it can be viable alternative to adds, as long as you allow your users to not participate and don't go all out with their processors but throttle it to say 5% orso...
Anyhow, he wouldn't have it, and I was wondering if I was alone in thinking I'd rather have some coins mined using my processor than seeing adds, especially if it's not at full speed, and with consent (and not on mobile)5 -
So I just heard that Bitcoins are illegal in my country. Like WTF? This is outrageous! Are you that much of a control freak that you couldn't allow a cryptocurrency to run, government? You and your taxes and shits!!! Ughhhh!
On another note, the cryptocurrency is indeed growing its boundaries. What are your opinions on it? Do you think maybe one day it will replace all conventional form of currency as we know it today? If yes, how long will it take?6 -

According to the report of Reuter on Geneva-based Libra Association : Facebook's Libra project has failed in its current form and needs reworking to be approved, said the president of Switzerland where the cryptocurrency is seeking regulatory consent. "I don't think (Libra has a chance in its current form), because central banks will not accept the basket of currencies underpinning it," Ueli Maurer, who is Switzerland's finance minister and outgoing president, told Swiss broadcaster SRF.
"The project, in this form, has thus failed," he added in an interview.
Libra did not immediately respond to a request for comment.1 -

Do you guys think that it would be possible to build a cryptocurrency that could replace traditional banking and money at all?
A non anonymous cryptocurrency, that could guarantee enough privacy to not be used for surveillance but at the same time could be used by common people.
I had this thought recently but at the time of writing ( :P ) I haven't enough knowledge and time to go deeper than this (meaning "nothing").14 -

After reading many articles and watching YouTube videos on Blockchain, how it works, the new framework etc etc. It's evident that blockchain can be used to eliminate many problem faced in different industries and so on.
