"sudo !!" Will rerun your last command with sudo privileges in a Linux environment.
You're welcome.34 -
Everyone has a test environment. If you're lucky, you'll have a separate production environment too.4

My girlfriend is learning python and she figured out how to change her environment to dark mode. I'm so proud of her.13

Finally sharing my desk! The team is allowed to work in a dark room, the proper environment for developers.27

"This dump is taking forever" - things that sound strange outside of a dev environment.
What are some other good ones?34 -
While I was looking for a wallpaper to use on my laptop, I bumped on this one and nostalgia kicked in!
It only took an instant to save it and set it!!! 😂
Whoever did this, s/he gets my respect!24 -

I was once called in by HR because i ended an email with an exclamation mark. I kid you not. She said i was being stand-offish and it was rude.
It has been almost 4 years since i left that company but i am still quite traumatized.16 -
Every company has a test environment. Some are lucky enough, to also have a production environment3
-
Just read this in LinkedIn:
XYZ is one of our top star developers, with #speed as maybe her strongest super skill. She develops and ships new features at a rapid pace, at any time of the day (and night)…
This sounds super toxic for some reason. I’m triggered10 -
1. Unlimited money on bank account
2. Give me master degree
3. Disable remote desktop as “secure environment” at my workplace22 -
The startup i work in has such a dynamic environment that their monthly milestones get changed every hour!

How many programmers does it take to change a light bulb?
None. They just change the environment to dark.1 -
Windows environment variables dialog. What the actual fuck. For like 15 years you couldnt change the size of the fucking window.2

Ubuntu's default desktop environment will be Gnome from version 18.04. They will finally abandon bloated unity.10

I was told that I am too sensitive and afterwards a liability because I couldn’t concentrate in a working space where interns were constantly screaming, running around, hitting and farting each other, throwing shit around and playing games (instead of working)...
I was told by the HR person that “boys will be boys”...9 -
The dev's over at paysafecard.com forgot to switch their environments.
They have websocket code in production that tries to connect to a localhost server3 -
Jr: I'm having a problem with my environment, can you help me?
Me: Sure! Did you switch to the latest Ubuntu LTS
so that your environment matches the rest of the dev team like you were asked to do the last 3 times?
Jr: No, I like Windows better because linux is too complicated. Can you just figure out how my environment is suppose to work and than fix what I did wrong please?
Me: No. Let me know if you ever need help with the our standard dev environment. Good luck!24 -
If your application cannot fully function in a development environment, with the excuse that certain functionalities can only be executed in production, the reason is that your system is a huge piece of shit.5
-
I've made up my mind, I'm leaving this toxic environment, the current company and making a switch. FUCK IT8

Python pisses me off. Not the language itself, but setting up the environment. Xkcd nailed this one.7

Nature of Startups
Sales executive go and sell the features which are not available in the product.
They come back and inform them to the manager, then the manager makes the request to dev team to do the features.
After all these the discussion will be made in the morning and delivery is expected by evening.5 -
I spent four hours just getting my dev environment working again today.
Whenever I switch branches on this project, I keep to run a script that does migrations, seed data, test db setup, static test info, etc. etc. etc. It takes 12-15 minutes to run.
Today, that script failed.
Apparently one of its steps requires running some of the project's code to produce valid objects. Makes sense. However, my ticket involves breaking a crapton of models (removing accessors) which I've already done, and then patching the behavior, which I haven't. Which means a lot of things are currently broken. Makes sense why the script fails.
However, I can't run the script on a different branch and then switch back because that simply doesn't work (for reasons), so I needed to find some workaround. I eventually did, but every attempt cost me 12 minutes.
Today was not fun, and certainly not productive.
I wonder when they're going to fire me 😅7 -
Unrealistic deadlines, incompetent managers and most importantly lack of motivation in a soul sapping demoralising environment.4

Soooo
I kind of always knew that you can make the terminal background transparent. But I can't believe I never thought of this
There's something so calming about my terminals now. I just can't explain what it is :^)17 -

Half way through a 2 hour deployment, and a fucking test fails.
Yes, it takes 2+hours to run the tests.
Rerun in test environment: pass
Rerun in prod: pass
Rerun changed test in prod: fail..
Why, why you got to hate me for?
I love it when production is the place where config gets changed.rant tests are good multi environment changes tests can go fuck off right now tests save lives inconsistencies hurt5 -
Best linux desktop environment?
---
I am going to reinstall my Arch Linux. It's time to try anything else than gnome.24 -
at the begin of the year I started working as contractor for a company which development environment was a shit machine in the basement...shared by all developers via ssh, that's right, no local development.
Who the hell needs virtual machines, Vagrant, Docker?
You break something while working? It's broken for everybody.
A.D. 2017
The other developers seemed fine with it.2 -
Tried to simulate spreading of viruses in quarantined vs non-quarantined environment.
Non-quarantined people are not understanding the concept of boundaries.5 -
Don't you just love it when something works in your development environment, your staging environment and then randomly breaks on production? :^)6

Enjoying my new dev environment already.
This is a real install alongside my existing windows install. Surprisingly enough, windows has in no way complained about Arch!12 -

That moment when you have an idea for a project and you spend all your time on setting up the environment, then your realize it is a stupid idea.
-
Definitely Docker.
Do whatever you want, whenever you want.
The pinnacle of flexibility.
Try out everything, without installing anything.
Deploy with the same environment you're developing with on your local machine.

Everybody has a testing environment. Some people are lucky enough enough to have a totally separate environment to run production in.3 -
I am a weird dev. No urge to rant really, mostly internal frustrations if any.
Today I had my first meeting with the client and it went smoothly - I showcased demo in the current state, they approved, asked a bit more about the technology and that's pretty much it...
I know, I know... I'm just starting and it's gonna change but, idk why, I think I'm in a good work environment.1 -

Turns out I was passing variables to the wrong container fml2 -
Ive been working on the same project for over a year now and the client is still asking for more features.
Meanwhile the whole industry is passig me by.4 -
My smartphone's fingerprint reader just stopped working, after EXACTLY 36 months of usage.
I always took care of this device to make it last, as I'm worried about resources consumption and what the production chain involves (like having working children in African mines).
I'll try to keep using it as long as possible, but I can't stop thinking that this problem shouldn't be always on us, the consumers, suffering defective devices designed to last only for two years.
We should put more pressure on producers to reduce electronic waste, and to invest more on the maintenance & repairing sectors (which are almost non-existent).
That's all folks.4 -
Ever have a bug that *only* occurs in your production environment? How do you test potential fixes? 😜5

just discovered mailcatcher. love it! <3

why are there only two of seven characters of the Webservice password, when the request goes out in my docker container?

If there is a $ in an environment variable, this $ has to be escaped with $$.

Everyday another thingy to learn ^^
xD1 -
You know that feeling when you realise that you forgot to change database in the dev environment ...
Just love backups sometimes. :)2 -
Python drives me nuts. Can we just have 1 environment to run python. Virtual environment or conda environment. Hard to switch from notebooks to ide's because you need to reinstall the packages for that environment3
-
Works in production?
Yes: Copy changes to dev and test.
No: Start humming and walk away from the computer. -
So it's officially a month into my new job...
I have to say, sometimes life can surprise you, I never expected things to go down so smoothly especially after getting fired from my previous one.
My manager is just an amazing super friendly guy, great colleagues with positive attitudes, positive work environment, better benefits, the list goes on...
Honestly I would say the biggest con is I now work 45hrs/week instead of 35, which might be a dealbreaker for some but I also work in the cloud industry which is honestly miles ahead than the UAT testing crap I used to do, plus the company pays for your certifications after you pass, so it's a small price to pay imo.
If any of you are struggling with a shitty job/work environment don't give up, out of all the places I worked at I never felt appreciated until I came here, keep on grinding.9 -
Setting up a Haskell environment on Windows is fucking AIDS. Guess I'll screw it and just use ANTLR for my compiler.6
-
We're doing a huge demo in half an hour for a governmental branch, and for some fucking stupid reason I decide to tinker with the deployment setup. And yes, all our staging environments went down, including the environment set up for the demo. Managed to get it up and running again though 😅3
-
I tried setting up an F* development environment on a Mac…
Yeah, that’s the rant. You can probably guess how it went…8 -
When your process (branching and environment configuration etc) takes longer than the actual dev task 🙄 #onelinechange4

We called a customer because that on their server a directory is missing which was important for production.
Turned out that they didn't miss a directory because they worked in the development environment of the same customer but in a different location. For the last 3 months. -
Turns out our environment variables are not managed by environments but putenv/getenv instead ... great!
-
So, I probably shouldn't post about this publicly, but I'm just exhausted.
There's a moment when you're writing a grievance letter to the CEO, and you're saying things like "evidence of discrimination includes a letter signed and sent via email and post by the CTO", and you have to giggle to yourself when you add "by default, I have not sent this letter via post as I believe this is a more environmentally friendly approach, however am more than happy to do so"2 -
My productivity today:
- [11:05] Decided to get something done to be able to enjoy the evening even more (an important deadline draws near).
- [11:06] Ran out of coffee apparently. Well, that sucks.
- [11:25] Trouble with the environment on my machine at home.
- [14:00] Trouble continues, tried using tools to fix trouble, ran into trouble with said tools, ended up fixing trouble with tools before fixing trouble with environment with tools.
- [15:30] Fixed environment, finally ready to get something done.
- [16:30] Spent an hour browsing the web.
- [16:31] Decided this was enough work for a saturday.
Well.1 -
thank god, Microsoft decided not to use lignite coal for updating their OS. I was worried to update windows, it used to cause so much smog in the neighbourhood, one uncle even died because of lead poisioning.
now, I can update Windows in peace, no more pollution.9 -
How do you customise your arch installation ?
Desktop environment and stuff ..
Give me the whole list3 -
So, after reading a post I started wondering...
Would you prefer to work in a toxic environment but have a good salary or work in a good environment for minimum wage?
I'm in the second position right now.10 -
fuck!
When your hard drive crashes, and the most annoying thing you forgot to save is the color/syntax theme on your favourite editor.

Maybe it's monokai? I think...
or was it oceanic

oh well at least it looks like I'm working.1 -
"If you would just switch to a Mac!" is a valid argument to solve local development environment complaints.
-
Eclipse with ADT. Never again. I'm so glad Google and JetBrains have put together a really great environment for Android development.
-
Made a dockerfile for a reproducible build environment today. It's been a few months since I had this much fun working, so refreshing.
This counts as devops right? In that case I might take a better look at devops sometime in the near future, I think I might like it. I just did it out of necessity (didn't want to bloat my system with build tools and sdks) but I ended up liking it. For some reason devops seems exceedingly boring to me, which prevented me from looking into it until now, let's see if I can overcome my laziness and learn it.4 -
My company insists on working in one production environment to save time and every time I try to convince them to set up a work flow with a dev and test environment, they tell me we don't have the time...
Even after I set one up anyway as I'm scared shitless to touch production. They tell me it's faster doing it all in one environment.
They launch an update. Site buggy as hell and doesn't load 90% of the content...
Sigh....4 -
Im gonna get a new laptop soon and on my old laptop I want to install linux (cant do that on my main laptop because Im a windows dev at the moment).
I am not new to linux and have used 3 major ubuntu versions and it was all trouble, autoremoving files after update etc.
So I am planning to go Manjaro but which desktop environment shall I use? I've heard great things about i3 and Cinnamon. Gnome is not something I liked in Ubuntu.
Which desktop environment do you use, why and how did you make the choice?6 -
Always I see black screen while developers written code. what is that? a specific language or environment?10
-
If you had a choice, what environment would you prefer for programming [and why]?
- home
- outdoors, nature
- caffee, library, etc
- office
- [other?]4 -
At my previous company, we used tools from all over the place. We switched between tools at will. Sometimes, some team would decide to use some tool while the rest of the company would use something else. The worst part was that there was no Single-Sign-On (SSO) either. Everyone would need to have an account on all of these said tools. It was chaos.
I realized that being integrated into one environment (even though would have the cost of a vendor-lock-in) was the best option to have because in that case, we wouldn't have to deal with operational hurdles like having integration from one tool to another. They would just come baked-in with the whole environment. That's how GSuite (formerly Google Apps for Work), Atlassian and other players succeeded - they gave a complete suite of services / software that integrated well with each other. You could jump back and forth between services without having to bother about integration with other tools. They'd all be there wherever you wanted them to be. Even cloud providers so that opportunity and built on it - Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Kubernetes (in itself).
Another example is a company that used Jira, Confluence and Hipchat but for some dumb reason used Gerrit for their code review / hosting. Eventually, they realized that managing the integration with the Atlassian tools was far more expensive than getting bitbucket and migrating completely into the Atlassian environment.
It's always the integration that matters. Everything else is secondary. -
My company doesn't want to provide a good environment and expect max output. Frustrated & Depressed.1
-
I’m curious what works for you? Lyrics or instrumental music while you’re working? I find myself preferring instrumental music while I’m thinking about a problem. The music can be technical and busy or super chill, but lyrics always distract me.
Of course, If I’m just half focused and grinding out mock responders for my unit tests then lyrics are fine.11 -
when the setup of programming environment takes more effort than the code.
and you're like fuck it i'll do it online!7 -
Finally took the time to start learning Angular 2. I wanted to do it right so I set up the development environment with webpack. Man does Angular 2 take a lot longer to get setup properly versus Angular 1. I mean it's worth it to do it properly but it was a lot more labor intensive getting a good dev environment setup than I had anticipated.4

A small ATM room which is equipped with 2 ACs and 4 tube lights, working 24x7 , is asking me not to print receipt to

Does anyone here uses Docker for all the environments (dev, qual, prod)?
If yes, how do you feel about it? How it is?8 -
Question for those that worked alone with a project manager, and were you covered multiple parts, frontend, backend, mobile and you basically have good friendship with the project owner/manager but the job got bored or wanted to switch jobs because you wanted to change environment.
What was the period you informed your employer/project manager in advance about your resignation and leaving? 2 weeks, a month? more? And was it enough time for the manager to find replacement? Did you leave in good terms?3 -
Developer environment on Mac > Developer environment on Windows.
Just saying. Unless it’s for game development. Or for shitty server software development AKA Microsoft Server 2003.11 -
Imagine a "development" environment with no vcs, no APIs, no general hierarchy for db admin or software development, no test environment. Well this was my first job.
Quite literally a dumpster fire.
I know I'm not a world class developer but I still think this was beyond unacceptable for a software startup.2 -

As a dev (all kind of dev ) what is something you struggle with in a work environment? Or at home?8
-
It could either turn out really well or most of the day will be wasted on setting up one's development environment
-
Ha! I remember now why I picked windows over ubuntu as environment for developing, I can install simultaneously apps in Windows meanwhile in Ubuntu cannot because something gets locked! And FFS the drivers! And also there's no simple way to do simple things like install and get a desktop icon without having to touch some scripts! I mean WTF!9
-
we all have that one dev that cries wolf and says it's an environment issue to by time and find the problem...1
-
Using some tools - do you learn all their default keybindings (hotkeys), or do you customize them? [do you re-customize them with every new installation/workstation?]
Like vim, ide, SQL client, etc.
[thinking about IntelliJ's CTRL+F4.. It feels off]
I for one prefer defaults.3 -
I love having a clean, open working environment...but I hate doing the work to keep that environment maintained.1
-
I've been working as a developer for 10 years now... I got my first software development job when I was still learning for my masters.
After all this time I have switched programming languages and product types a few times from web development to mobile apps to desktop software (C++, CEF, QT,).
And I have come to the conclusion that I want early retirement... like right now retirement... I'm done dealing with management that doesn't understand shit... dealing with people we have outsourced part of the shit to... needing to fix stuff that is broken after some other person refactored the code and didn't fully test it and it somehow got approved... dealing with people that think that "know better" and implemented things like that 5 years ago because they thought like "THAT" and will not accept my merge request because of that.
Like don't get me wrong I love to make and develop software, but since this is the 3rd job in the row with a toxic environment like this I feel like I need to move to the country side and open up a farm or something :|2 -
From the window by my desk I can see helicopters, jet planes and the occasional bird attacking people.
What do you see out your window by your desk?8 -

I'm trying to install the environment of one of the currently gaming consoles...
I'm stuck in no-man's land because part of it depends on removed features of .Net from 2006-2008 that are not included right now...
So fuck this. I'll try again on the next one if uses more updated tools... -
Demo of a feature had to be canceled just minutes before the meeting. Entire environment is hosed and don’t know why. Also, the feature to be demonstrated turned out to not be working before the environment stopped working, so we now have more time to shift to another solution. Win?
-
I am thinking of buying a new desktop.
Would it be better if I built one myself or bought a prebuilt one?17 -
yo tester, I mentioned that I was off for half a day, WHY in the world are you trying to contact me to say that the test environment does not work??!!?!
There are more capable developers online that can fix that for you!!!
Stupid incompetent person!2 -
Ik was helping a friend and needed quick a dev environment. Great, github codespaces to the resque! Fast dev environment with vscode editor online running a debian container. Perfect. But then it happened: "You're at 100% of your included usage for this billing period. For more information, view your billing settings.".
I can't access my source files anymore. Fuck, it was so much research5 -
When it comes to config files for any kind of application, I tend to make sure that I understand what each config does, and that for each environment, they have the correct settings.
However some of my co-workers don't bother understanding what the configs mean and so I have people copying and pasting config details from development environments into staging and production configs. They think that just changing hostnames is more than enough.
So they ended up wasting a good 3 hours trying to figure out why sessions were always invalidating and cached objects were not caching. I had a look at the config and realised their mistake in like 3 mins. -
I'm losing my mind.
It turns out that the API test environment we are using to test a new payment method is their development/staging environment. A couple of hours ago, they fucked up something, and we have been stuck because of that.3 -
It's raging when you have a great idea but you're not in the good environment (like not having a desk) to code it...

Is it normal for the majority of the junior web developers to struggle with development environment settting? I am asking because I am struggling7

A gradual learning environment with a competitive environment . A place with a correct amount of air conditioning ( not like a freaking fridge ) . Coding the algorithm and stuff for games .

I mean where do I even begin
I am trying to fix up some really awful sloppy mistakes but since we only use svn and I don't have any sort of branch of my own I end up breaking other peoples builds while I try to fix their mistakes
And then I get yelled at and told to test the build somehow on their environment which is totally seperate to ours, and ensure there are no build problems
Even if said problems are svn conflicts they are apparently still my fault and evidence as failure on my part as a developer
I mean how do i even retort to that? Can I tell them to get stuffed, like seriously.. I have asked and checked in if there was any issues and they said nothing repeatedly
I have proposed the idea of a integration environment to test the commits of revisions and merging ect.
I got told off
For gods sakes2 -
I guess this is more of a work environment question than a dev one. Are you friends with your teammates/ coworkers at work ?
I’ve had some bad experiences and now I’m in a much saner environment and despite everyone being nice, some afterworks and out of work events, I still can’t quite give my full trust. Should I ? I can’t shake the feeling something is gonna go wrong if I do…
EDIT: For additional context, I work in a big company where my interactions with my colleagues are not really followed closely like they would be in a startup I guess.5 -
Can anyone suggest me a Linux Distro or an Ubuntu Desktop Environment that:
- Has beautiful interface
- Is not slow
- Allows customization
I don't like Unity and Gnome because of the shit interface. I installed KDE Plasma (Kubuntu) but it's slow af and buggy.
I want something that has fast window management, Mac-like Dock, and just something that increases productivity.12 -

Why so many weird frameworks and libraries? these days I study so many frameworks and install things and I am actually overwhelmed. Sometimes those things conflict each other and end up messing up my PC. Do frameworks and libraries make dev environment fancy? I am not sure, to me it seems that things are going messy. Please give me fresh perspective.2

Jesus fucking christ, fuck angular sometimes ... most of the times. just fuck it
And fuck me even more for writing such shit components when I started out with it.
Takes forever to find the shit that isn't working due to angulars magic change detection and the shittx performance of local dev environment.
Has to run in JIT because the app it too big, and then it takes 10 sec to build everytime you change something. And during that time i get a 100% cpu usage which kills vscode so I cant do anything properly
fuck it, i just wanna have a nice weekend now1 -

Unrealistic deadlines, and my dev environment is lagging so bad I can barely type. I can't work like this!

So sick of a flimsy/fragile dev environment. Introducing docker at any level just increases risks, I swear.6

Has anyone ever tried to export a table in SAP HANA to csv format? Unfortunately, we are not allowed to access our SAP HANA environment directly from our development laptop (the SAP environment is a production environment, of course we don't have a develop or test environment nor does anyone feel the need to create one), so we need to email ourselves a csv file with the data we need to develop our models in python (I'm not kidding).
Anyhow, among other things, I need to manually add column names in the file, some columns are quoted, some are not, I cannot choose my delimiter, ...
Is this vendor lock-in the year 2023?4 -
I think one shouldn't be friend with their colleagues specially they are tester or manager .. Its hard to manage then.4

It took me a month's time to adjust to working in co-working space last year and it took around similar this to adjust to working from home this year. Both working environments have there own pros and cons but somehow we all find a way to continue working.
Don't know what working environment lies ahead of me once this lockdown get's over but I hope I adjust again in similar manner there too :D -

Do you know something I hate? It is when you run the software it works fine in the dev environment, but then when you actually publish it outside, it just doesn't work.
That gets me so angry...1 -
Great winows update caused all my vms to reboot breaking my dev environment. Thank you windows 10.1

I hate AWS ec2 instanced with it shitty handling of environment variables...Why in hell it is so hard to set an environment variable which will be re-set in case the instance will be restarted? For hours I'm fighting through manuals and non of the described procedures work2

Honest question, if you work in an agile environment, do you prefer story points or counting of hours to gauge tasks?4

The joy of ops - when the customer says "my reporting environment isn't fast enough - can I get my reports from the production environment?" and we've specifically created the reporting environment for insulating the system from performance-hogging queries...

the main issues for DevOps seems to be environment variables.
Cuz thats what they always talk about. I mean.2 -

People complaining about heat and the hottest day of the year. They are saying that this is the hottest summer that they have experienced in 10 years.
One intelligent person: This is the coolest summer that you will experience for the next 10 years.
P.S. didn't care about the environment and global warming that much but this shit hit hard.3 -
We have pre-prod and prod test environments. Prod is supposed to be exactly the same as a client's production environment. Find out our prod test environment is nothing like the client's production environment... for over 3 years.1

How do you deal with a toxic workplace environment. More specifically a senior that don't want to take responsibility and a SM that takes on more a role of a project manager than a scrum master?
Any advice would be great
For context I am a junior but work for nearly 2 years on this project1 -
Working with rails in ci/cd environment is always soo painful. Developing is a joy, but operating it is the pure horror :'(3

So this happens way too often;
you make some changes in your code and open your testing environment and expect to see results, but you don't. You wonder why, did I mess something up? everything seems to be correct?
aaand then you glimpse for a second at the url and realise you have the staging environment page up.. -
When talking to the integration guys, installing a new testing environment takes about 3 weeks or more.
When a new dev arrive in the team, we set his dev environment in half a day.
I don't understand such a difference.5 -
Helped a person set up a huge sas code in a different environment and run it, with deadline near our necks, only to realize that there was an error in the laaast line of the code.. Took the enterprise server environment 6 hrs to run.. and now we both are fucked..

when you haven't touched or changed your eclipse environment variables
but eclipse decides fuck it, can't fucking find em , get a separate unrelated error -
Despite already having a few years of professional experience dealing with Linux servers, I still, to this day, confuse, which environment file gets sourced and when...
There's /etc/profile, /etc/bashrc, ~/.bash_profile, ~/.profile, ~/.bashrc
I think it's... Bashrc for interactive shells, profile for login shells.
But then I have examples like "ssh user@server 'echo $var'" that... Don't source any of the files!
You can enable user environment files for SSH that get sourced whenever a user logs on through SSH (~/.ssh/environment / environment specified for a key in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys)
Is there some sort of master environment file that gets sourced *every* time, no matter what kind of shell starts?1 -
Even my lamenting the diminishment of signs of life in my environment is repetitive and seems staged !10

What's the most sensible way to build and use 32/64-bit libraries with MSYS on Windows? Specifically, I am wondering about zlib and libpng along with SDL2.
I know there are pre-built versions available, but I am inevitably going to need to build other libraries in future.
I'm expecting things to go into /usr/local (which they do), but I'd like to have separate builds for 32-bit and 64-bit. I know I can put things into "lib32" or "lib64" using ./configure options pretty easily, but DLLs (e.g. SDL) seem to end up in "bin" so I assume I should create a "bin32" and "bin64" for those?
Then there's the issue of e.g. libpng not being able to find zlib's headers when using its MSYS makefile... Should I be editing these makefiles? It looks as though I should (things are commented-out etc.) but when I want to update to a newer version, I'll need to modify the makefile again.
It probably sounds like a really silly set of questions but I've always found that building and installing libraries on Windows feels really clumsy and I just want to make sure I'm not making a really messy dev environment.
