When your colleagues have no tests for their code and tell you not to touch it, because it WORKS!14
-
No-code platforms always like to forget that writing the code is *literally* the easiest part of software development 🙄15
-
Me, in the zone, staring at the code. Co-worker enters.
Co: hey, can you...
Me (not really listening): no.
Co: it's just...
Me: no.
Co: later?
Me: no.
Co: but...
Me: no.
Co: (leaving)13 -
My very first meeting with a new client:
Client: We need to launch in 6 weeks. Do you think you can hit that deadline?
Me: Do you have a spec for what needs to be done?
Client: No we don't.
Me:3 -
Apparently this little music player has no transmitter, receiver, microphone nor camera, pity on you NSA!12
-
So this is what I received from a very bad recruiter.
I don't even know why I covered the details, this deserves to be public xD
Also, consider that this message came with <no subject>..5 -
When I tell people that I'm a software developer and they ask "Isn't that hard?"
I have no idea how to answer12 -
I work in a computer repair shop. A COMPUTER repair shop. And every day, I get asked "Do you repair phone screens?" No. No, I do not. Stop asking!11
-
I spent all my saving on a new PC... I wanted the stickers... But no rant of mine gets enough upvotes :/6
-
Boss: Here's the next project that I would you to start immediately.
Me: So the client wants <Application Name>
Boss: Yes and it's due on Friday after 2 weeks.
Me: Yes can be done. By what time today you can give me the requirements.
Boss: Not today, I will give you the requirements next week Friday.
Me: So I should start the project next week Friday.
Boss: You have to start the project today
Me: Start with what? There is no requirement. Excuse me, I need a break.5 -
My code broke for no reason.
I added a log statement to see why.
*tests code*
It worked....
What the 何?!5 -
🤔
I think "Velop" should be a word.
Velop - to break software
(velopers would be muggles/stupid users?)
This would give the word "developer" a new meaning.
No?
Okay3 -
If some of you missed this gem in stackoverflow answers, I bring it once again!

NOT A RANT!
No jack in new pirates of carribean trailer. Looks like everyone is following apple's example2 -
Got a marketing email talking about the "No Code" revolution. They're talking to the wrong girl here.12

Last follow up rant for now on the Linux job hunting. Recruiter called and said that the employer is no longer interested in me. Slightly sad but hey let's keep the chin up and continue job hunting!10

My Friends say i´m no dev...
Why???? :(
I love do Sports,
I have free time,
I´m eating healthy,
I don't like coffee....10 -
*In TeamSpeak with 4 of my friends*
Them: Hey, why don't you join our GTA Session?
Me: Ehh uhm...(Not answering)
Them: Hello?
Me: No, I can't right now. I'll join later.
*A few hours later*
Them: Are you joining??
Me: No, later.
Them: Right, so never then?
Me: 🙃
I never played GTA today, instead I continued to work on my C/Gtk+ application. Way better than any game 😁
Also, my friends think I'm boring, and I don't understand why... 😂7 -
You go to work, have no work to do, so you work on your own personal projects.
Whats more fun than getting paid to do whatever you want...3 -
There was once this customer, which wanted a project done. It was for around 2/3 weeks of work. The arranged cost was 500€, but when I said how long I'll need, he said:
No. I need it done in 5 days. Every day over, I deduct 50€ from the payment.
I was out of the building in less than a minute.
Fuck this type of customers.10 -
This morning I kept falling back asleep after the alarm went off, drifting in and out of a dream about programming.
My wife finally said "no more sleeping".
Still mostly sleep, I replied very confidently "you can't sleep in a sandbox!".
I was dreaming I was in a code sandbox. Obviously sleeping is not allowed.
Jeez, my head has been really full of programming since this conference. (One of the talks was on codesandbox). -
I just saw this picture on the product page of a Thunderbolt dock. I'm not sure what this guy is doing, but no programmer of the world would mirror his laptop screen on two full size screens. Just no!11

That moment you realise why you enjoy the dev life again.
It's been a long time since I've had a solid day of coding, just coding..., no meetings, no wild requests, no crazy issues, no data fixing because someone can't type a number correctly, just me, myself and that keyboard going on a field trip of quality coding time again.
Ah, it's a good day to end the week on!rant holy shit no meetings no problems lack of bau devlife those feels straight code quality code time back to the old days3 -
Oh no, oooooh nononono
they dont delete the branches after a pull request
232 branches? hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhno
and look at that naming
im intimidated, i dont want to work in this environment. No. NO!7 -
I'm doing code review. Unsure about the deadline, I ask my co-worker:
Me: "Guess I'm half through, when do I have to be done?"
Co-worker: "Well if you're half through, you are already half done."
Me: "No shit, Sherlock."
LOL -
Today I fell down the rabbit hole.
I've been writing some automated tests which found an asymmetry in our algorithm which I think is caused by an off by 1 in even input dimensions.
Change input to odd dimensions, crash due to out of bounds exception.
Switch to debug mode to try to work out why we crash, failing asserts for default function arguments with no obvious reason beyond a helpful message saying they're unsupported.2 -
Today I made like the dirtiest hack I ever made. I needed to convert people's birthdate into days (starting from 0), and then had to find out the oldest person. It didn't work, because the output was the youngest person... So instead fixing the mistakes in my code, I simply made the value be negative ¯\_(ツ)_/¯2

Dear fucktards with cookie notifications.
Give me a damn button of just “NO, I don’t agree”
Ain’t nobody got time to unstick 500 check boxes every single visit, surely theres no good or useful reason of some of these sites having more cookies then words on their home pages.14 -
Just updated to the latest insider build for Windows 10.. left PC unattended and came back later and it was ready... no BSODs, no random crashes, no issues, nothing... it just works as expected...
I can hear Linux fanatics screaming after reading this 😂
FUCK all this Windows stereotypes BS going on here13 -
A classmate of mine had the task to align some content on a page to the center using CSS (using margins)
That classmate has no fucking clue because she pays no attention.
font:10px;
was the only thing she wrote into the text file that was projected onto the whiteboard.
The teachers asked: "What does font stand for?"
Her reply: "Uuuuuuh... Position?"

Recruiter:
... the bank purchased a 3rd party tool and hired a 3rd party development team to add some features to the tool. That external team hired their own 3rd party team, and now there are 400+ bugs in the system. Would you like to work as a test-automation lead on this project?
Me: Fuuuucck no.5 -
Just found out that our no-reply mail is having a conversation with another autoreply! Turns out that it's autoreply that's supposed to tell people to stop writing is autoreplying to a customers autoreply. Haha...6

Our internship and placement tests start from 30th and this is message we got from our coordinators.
😤
(We do have WiFi on campus and in labs ,idk why they aren't letting us use that!!)
They are asking use to use the DONGLES ! who the hell has those, these days !
Uni's response to this : if you can't get your own internet source, then don't give the test. (Translation : we don't give a single flying fuck)
Got my self a Jiofi ,I hope it would work fine.
BUT !!!!!!!!
Often our phones catch no network in the labs ! And if they do,the internet speed is slow.
The tests will go GREAT ! 🙃25 -
When you are into Dota2 trying to forget everything after stressful day and your manager messages you if you have spare 10 minutes to discuss next weeks' upcoming tasks.
Hell NO!! Let me play and chill.5 -
FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK
I HAVE A TEST TOMORROW AT 8 AM AND I'VE BEEN TRYING TO SLEEP SINCE 12.30 AM. IT'S 6 AM ALREADY, 6 AM!
I guess when they no screens before sleeping they really mean it. I'm fucked, I'm really fucked. I guess I'll stare the ceiling until the alam goes off and accept an awful day and hope I get pumped up during the test or something. Fuck me. I want to fucking SLEEP. Fuck.
I just wanted to install vivaldi before sleeping and watch the last rick and morty episode. Does that fucking make me a fucking night owl? No. I could've use these precious time learning or writing code, or even sleeping, but fuck! I'm stuck here in time, just waiting for fucks sake!
Good night...
OR That's what I WOULD say if I could sleep...16 -
Boss: I have a demo NOW, but there os an error message on that page.
Me: okay, give me sometime to elaborate the problem..
Boss: No No please, this is urgent
Me: Okay..

Christmas eve, no programming for once (tomorrow lots though). Just chilling with a best friend, having beers and fried stuff and watching family guy episodes. Not programming can be a bliss sometimes!2

It says "There was no battery found."
This laptop was not connected to a power adapter, but Windows also said that there is no battery. Did I missed the update where Microsoft implemented magic wireless energy?7 -
Asking a developer for an estimate is like asking a doctor how long it will take to perform an appendectomy.
Making that estimate a hard date is like telling the doctor, "We need this finished in 45min, no matter what... NO MATTER WHAT!"4 -
My business-partner thinks we can pull personal informations from cookies, like age, gender, city and interests......
"Can we get peoples age and gender from cookies? How much data can we get from their cookies? Like if they've looked at a white bag recently?"
WTF..2 -
A while back I feel asleep on the couch on the day of the state of the union address.
My deadass mind heard someone asking what the "state of the unit tests" was and I leaped up and said "there aren't any! i'm sorry, it's only a small project anyway".
Thank god no one else was there... 😂 -
Today, my dad can finally ditch his iPhone 4 which is passed down from my eldest sis to my mom and to my dad, all thanks to my brother-in-law getting a Samsung Galaxy J7 on Black Friday.
Finally. No more Apple bullshit in my house!! NO FUCKING MORE!!! *insert hysterical laughter* GOODBYE STUPID 20-PIN CHARGER CABLE~ GOODBYE ITUNES~ GOODBYE ICLOUD~ FUCK YOU!!!7 -
There is no such thing as finishing a successful project, there is always a broken piece. By fixing that piece, you break another.
Most of our time, we break stuff.9 -
first off, they've defined (just yesterday) FOUR (not ONE) features to be done by the end of the month (yes really no joke, i mean _this_ month, as in october, i.e. they mean by monday)
four of them still have "to be defined" labels
so, what, you guys gonna define those today so we have uh.... all of friday to do them?
🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡4 -
PM: We don't need a spec. We'll figure it out as we go.
Me: O_O.... So what do you need the system to do?.....
PM: ( gives vague requirements)
4 weeks later I still no clue what they need.1 -

That great moment when you can just write your code with nobody rushing you and no deadlines8 -
Faxbook literally sent a cease-and-desist letter to the developer of an extension that unfollows everyone on your account, oh and they also ban his account.

I've never ever fully completed a side-project like I envisioned it to be. If I had, I'd have my own company already. It's mostly because I didn't have the time (no, that's a lie; or just an excuse). It's mainly because I haven't been motivated enough to see it through to the end. My motivation life-span ends when I get distracted by something else and in the end ends up like the Commit Strip.2

At work the other day...
Guy: "Oh hey I was thinking if you could help me with an application to visualize some data."
Me: "Ooookay...what did you have in mind?"
Guy: "I think we have XML files that could be turned into graphs...oh and we could add some trend lines. (Getting more excited) And maybe we could supplement it with live data...oh hey and maybe we could add real time alerts via email..."
Me: *thinks to self...there is no way in hell I am starting to work on something that he is literally coming up with requirements as he's talking* "I need specifics...so go take some time, think it through and get back to me with concrete details and examples."
Guy: "Ok. That should be enough to get you started for now at least."
That would be a big fuck no, good sir. Haven't started and won't start it. He has never mentioned it to me again since then.4 -

Have a couple I want to air today.
First was at my first gig as a dev, 4-5 months out of school. I was the only dev at a startup where the owner was a computer illiterate psycopath with serious temper tantrums. We're talking slamming doors, shouting at you while you are on the phone with customers, the works...
Anyways, what happened was that we needed to do an update in our database to correct some data on a few order lines regarding a specific product. Guess who forgot the fucking where-clause... Did I mention this boss was a cheap ass, dollar stupid, penny wise asshole that refused to have anything but the cheapest hosting? No backups, no test/dev/staging environment, no local copies... Yeah, live devving in prod, fucking all customers with a missing semi-colon (or where clause).
Amazingly, his sheer incompetance saved my ass, because even if I explained it, he didn't get it, and just wanted it fixed as best we could.
The second time was at a different company where we were delivering managed network services for a few municipalities. I was working netops at that time, mostly Cisco branded stuff, from Voice-over-IP and wifi to switches and some routing.
One day I was rolling out a new wireless network, and had to add the VLAN to the core switch on the correct port. VLAN's, for those who don't know, are virtual networks you can use to run several separated networks on the same cable.
To add a VLAN on a Cisco switch one uses the command:
switchport access vlan add XYZ
My mistake was omitting the 'add', which Cisco switches happily accept without warning. That command however can be quite disruptive as it replaces all of the excisting VLAN's with the new one.
Not a big deal on a distribution switch supplying an office floor or something, but on a fucking core switch in the datacenter this meant 20K user had no internet, no access to the applications in the DS, no access to Active Directory etc. Oh and my remote access to that switch also went down the drain...
Luckily a colleague of mine was on site with a console cable and access to config backups. Shit was over within 15 minutes. My boss at that time was thankfully a pragmatic guy who just responded "Well, at least you won't make that mistake again" when we debriefed him after the dust settled. -
No errors/warnings with the first run after a few hours of programming... getting an anxious feeling..
-
Why is it that no one asks me for anything all day until 3 mins before I'm supposed to leave work?1

Wanna hear a story? The consultancy firm I work for has been hired to work on a WPF project for a big Fashion Industry giant.
We are talking of their most important project yet, the ones the "buyers" use to order them their products globally, for each of the retail stores this Fashion giant has around the world. Do you want to know what I found? Wel, come my sweet summer child.
DB: not even a single foreign key. Impossibile to understand without any priopr working experience on the application. Six "quantity" tables to keep aligned with values that will dictate the quantities to be sent to production (we are talking SKUs here: shoes, bags..)
BE: autogenerated controllers using T4 templates. Inputs directly serialized in headers. Async logging (i.e. await Logger.Error(ex)). Entities returned as response to the front end, no DTOs whatsoever.
WPF: riddled with code behind and third party components (dev express) and Business Logic that should belong to the Business Layer. No real api client, just a highly customized "Rest Helper". No error reporting or dealing with exceptions. Multiple endpoints call to get data that would be combined into one single model which happens to be the one needed by the UI. No save function: a timer checks the components for changes and autosaves them every x seconds. Saving for the most critical part occurring when switching cells or rows, often resulting in race conditions at DB level.
What do you think of this piece of shit?6 -
*LOL* The animal rights organisation PETA criticises the use of donkeys in the traditional Passion play in Oberammergau, Bavaria, Germany. PETA claims that Jesus would ride into Jerusalem on an e-scooter.

For decades, the computer industry has been talking about replacing silicon in future chips.
AMD finally did it - all of their more recent chips are made of military grade unobtanium!7 -
NO. NO. A THOUSAND TIMES: NO.
I clicked on this out of genuine curiosity to see if someone was finally trying to discourage people from annoying the shit out of website visitors. A summary of the suggestions in their article as to what to use popups for:
1. Announce new products/services, features, policy updates, new blog posts
2. Promote your sales or coupons (including countdowns)
3. Encourage people to input their e-mail address / subscribe, perhaps also offering some vague thing they will get as a reward for doing so
4. Contact forms (e.g. support etc.)
5. Prompt visitors to confirm their age before showing content
6. Login/register forms
7. Display social media "share" buttons when a visitor has scrolled a certain way through the page content.
8. Display cookie consent prompt.
9. Help guide visitors to the part of the website they want to go to.
Of these: 1, 2, 3, and 7 need to die for sure. If a website does any of these things I'm inclined to immediately leave and never return. 8 is a little annoying but seems a necessity.
Someone even replied to the Tweet saying that popups are annoying, the company responded with "let's change that!"
Blank portions of the screenshot are to avoid promoting the company unintentionally as a result of the rant ;)3 -
"Tar up your projects as version control."
- CS teacher
I understand git is hard (just the awkward syntax) and not part of a curriculum, but can it at least be suggested? A whole year later, I found out about git and it has made CS projects so much easier.

Yeaaahhh that moment when the program flawlessly crunches through ten thousands of files, only limited by the slowish HDD! :-)
In full multi-threading, tons of dynamic buffer resizing, pointer shit left and right, also two star programming, and everything written in raw C!14 -
So python does not have constants and the only way to create one is to create a class with a getter but no setter.

We have a saying in the Netherlands: "You have no, you can get yes."
We changed the saying in our team:

I just bought hitgub.co
Honestly have no regerts about it.
Idk what to do with it, but I'll figure it out.11 -
Why ? Why is there no time left for the cool stuff? Spending too much time at work - beeing tired- bought a new rasp-pi - it's already 1 year old - untouched @ home ... just why?
had holidays ... spent 4 days of 7 to recover - just slept.2 -
My No.1 interview question for UX developers:
What are the CSS default text and background colours?
The correct answer is: "undefined-on-undefined".
If your 1st thought was "black-on-white", you're the reason we can't have nice things.24 -
Can we please eliminate React?
I was interviewing lately and the lady asked if I knew react, I said no and I don't want to. She then asked what the hell I use for front end... As if react is the only thing you can use... Ehm hello we still have vanilla JS and jQuery in the house. Which are better, faster and easier to use for like +90% of all Web projects out there...25 -
Shit, no internet in office for more than 4 hours. BTW I'm chilling..🙃

Today’s DevOps public service announcement... don’t test your server provisioning scripts locally. Especially when this gem is in there:

Start-up I'm working for as a front-end dev is pretty nice. I have good hardware, free coffee and my coworkers are all decent people. My boss is chill, and I have flexible work hours.
There is this one policy for writing code, however. And I simply cannot understand it, nor can I ignore it because of code reviews: no comments in production code.
I mean, what? Why? Comments are nice, and they make life easier for the future maintainers. At least let me put a small two-liner explaining why I did stuff this or that way. But no, I only get to explain it verbally (once) to the person reviewing my PR. Why, man?9 -
Both GCC and Clang can switch off the braindead type-based aliasing rules through the "-fno-strict-aliasing" compiler option so that everything can alias everything.
On the other hand, C offers the "restrict" qualifier for pointers where you promise that nothing will alias this memory area, not even same type pointers.
What happens if you use "restrict", but compile with "-fno-strict-aliasing"? Will the "restrict" be obeyed or disregarded?
Answer in the comments.8 -
That feeling of betrayal when you finally find a proper, well written and well formatted article/tutorial about a framework (or anything you are learning), only to find out it is "Part 1" and no other parts were ever written...

So ... Yeah ... I survived a week in my holiday apartment with no wifi...
Now to wait for that phone bill 😂 oh well -

It was when I saw that he was writing CSS in one huge file (couple of thousands of lines)

And no, not just the CSS properties, the whole thing including class/id selectors...1 -
Do you want to run the script? Yes, No, Print. Wait what?
What is the intention of 'print'? Will it print the question out for me? :D5 -
My school class is going for a skiing trip soon. Since I don't have a laptop yet, no code for me in the evenings. :(12

It's never enough.

Idiot mode: on
It's bad when you realize you are the most idotic person you know. I just bought a wifi card replacement for my laptop only to find out that one of the screws on its back was completely unscrewable. I foolishly decided to force my way through by forcing the plastic. I tought I got away with it as I only damaged a plastic support tighten to the laptop base but now, my laptop screen isn't showing anything.
When I first booted it up after this, it was working, but it started showing troubling signs shortly after. Now, all I can get out of it is a completely black screen, no backlight at all.
What should I do? 😥9 -
How to make those marketing staff of x service stop sending you an email when they don't have unsubscribe link:
1. Reply back asking about the free tier/plan
2. Profit!
2 days and no word from them after spamming me daily about the service3 -
I have become so paranoid at every ++ and comment on my rants my heart races if someone has the same name as a colleague FML, thought this was going to relieve stress 😨1

Just learned display css properties. Took me long enough to make a damned HTML template.
Me no likes front end :(5 -
Damn fucking channel diggers. One of them probably cut our fibre cable when working on the water pipeline to our house. And tomorrow is a holiday here, so no FTTH until at least wednesday (I am not that optimistic, though).
My mobile data plan is already stretched and I was very motivated to do something on my thesis.4 -
Hello everyone.
What do you do when you have no moral neither motivation?
Woke up this morning, feel bad as fuck, spent 15min hugging my cat but still feel bad.
Any cute animals would be much appreciated :)18 -
I turn into a 2 yrs old whenever I'm editing a 3D model.
From the perspective that I want to throw everything in sight and my response to everything is "No!". 🙄4 -
I had a dream that I was dual-booting Linux and Windows together 😨.
Thank God it was just a dream.1 -
When used properly No-SQL databases are an incredible resource but my employer keeps hammering them in problems which could better be solved by traditional SQL databases in an attempt to be more "hip" and "cool".
This causes huge PITA in making the database work properly with the ORM we're using and waste of time since we're force to emulate basic features which are already exists in almost any SQL database (i.e. relational integrity) using No-SQL storage.1 -
Yesterday I made a survey from MDN. Then I came to this question. Who made this survey, this is just... no!6
-
I have a Mac at work right now, and if/when it putters out, I would be fine with another, but not if it's the touch bar variety. In that case, I'll ask for a surface or a latitude(the options the company offers to the MacBook) and just hijack Linux onto it. I won't even ask if I can, because I'm sure the answer will be no.7
-
I have to say one of the most annoying things in software development is building tools that will never be really used by clients, sometimes clients just want something new and shiny and once they get it off it goes into a dark closet of no use to gather webs4
-
Fuck, I'll always be a noob. Knowing next to nothing about software development, hacking, exploits - just anything.
Felt a bit proud to had reached the level "hacker" on hack the box. Was fun solving stego, crypto and reversing challenges, diving into assembly the first time. Felt cool stepping through a disassemblied executable with radare, and understanding what a NOP slide is...
However all the illusion crumbled down, when I watched this CCC talk on OpenBSD security, where the speaker was underwhelmed with one of OpenBSD mitigations, where they tried to disallow them: "NOP slides?! Srly? No one is using that anymore. Just look at current exploits."
I felt so stupid, which I probably am. Will never catch up with those guys.
But whatever. In the end we all know nothing. We have no clue, but some are more apt in disguising it behind big speech.
(really like this German song: https://youtube.com/watch/...
Those lines always give me a chuckle:
"Man has no idea.
The house has no idea.
The tree has no idea.
The fawn has no idea.
The squid has no idea.
The tapir knows, but doesn't tell us.")3 -
My boss (Peter) canceled the meeting for today.
Talking to my coworker:
Me: I had a feeling there would be no meeting.
Coworker: Yeah? What made you think that?
Me: When Peter came to me and said, "There is no meeting today." I had a feeling there would be no meeting.
Coworker: That is some pretty strong intuition you have there. <laughing>
Me: I may have been jumping to conclusions though.
Coworker: <laughing harder>3 -
Hmm Monday morning and no Internet..
How do I stack overflow my "programming"?
Just kidding, Mobile Hotspot ftw.2 -
You know what I hate more than bugs/shitty docs/no VCS?
Recoding the whole damn thing in another language, from ground up to do exactly the same shit. Why WHY must developers shit hundreds of solutions into space only to say "Huh, look at my software, it was I who developed it." No, you simply recoded it and wasted your time and everyone else's time searching for a solution.1 -
Need urgent change for the site, it takes 5 minutes I guess, no more than an hour anyway.
Can you do it during your break? Thank you2 -
Manager 101: Plan things ahead.
My manager: Hey let's move this complex server today (Friday) all hands on deck, no plan in advanced. Nothing.
Why so much people bullshit they way to managerial positions?10 -
"There is no cloud, it's just someone else's computer"
I don't understand this statement. Could someone please explain.11 -

Why is there no tool autoinstalling missing programs using your favourite pac(kage)man(ager)?
Like so,

If there is one... Shame on me *rings bell*
Also, yay! First Post!14 -
Turning Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge into anime girls does not change the fact that they still suck. I feel no pity.6

I recently moved to another apartment. The technician who was going to install the internet connection on Saturday couldn't make it because apparently you hace to ask for permission with 48hrs of anticipationwith the administrator of the apartment complex. So all weekend with no internet I felt like a fucking caveman FML.

A few years ago I worked at company specialized in Magento(eCommerce) and Magento was changing their licensing model. At the time they had 3 Versions. Community(free), Pro and Enterprise.
They decided to ditch Pro and either make all migrate to Enterprise(with a discount) or go community which wasn’t really compatible. So some shops were in need of a more or less complete rewrite.
My hdd crashed literally the day before but hey no big deal everything is 99% done and on staging. So I had a Trainee at that Time and thought the last few crappy things could be done in pair programming so he can learn a few things.
But fuck him! That motherfucker! He managed to WIPE the staging server and no that was at a time without gut and no SVN. That dipshit just deleted 2 months of work because he thought it was a good idea to SYNC his empty project to the staging system.
Oh god I nearly stabbed him. He did that shit out of his own mind even though I told him a dozen times what would happen... we had to do the whole thing again with me sitting next to him watching every stroke he made.
Guess he learned something while inward silently raging the next weeks.1 -

I was getting headaches from looking at the comp screen all day, but what can you do when it's your job? A friend told me about these glasses you can buy specifically for people at a comp 8+ hrs a day. I gave in and bought a pair, and now, no more headaches! Thank you Gunnar glasses! 👓 😃1 -
I really don't get why creators of already-suspicious looking software (and the related suspicious looking website) put terms like "NO VIRUS" or "100% free of malware" next to the download area.
I mean, why would that help anything?
(I understand those typical virustotal scan widgets though, those are fine)1 -
!rant. Just trying to make people feel a bit better.
Ever thought "Ah crap, I have no idea what's going on with this code?" - then immediately second guessed your abilities?
You're not alone.

This week I'm doing construction work -- renovating my balcony. Just now I've finished with HTML - hanging drywall ceiling. Tomorrow will start on CSS - putty.
Damn, it's so gooood no not think about computers!6 -
Yesterday was a horrible day...
First of all, as we are short of few devs, I was assigned production bugs... Few applications from mobile app were getting fucked up. All fields in db were empty, no customer name, email, mobile number, etc.
I started investigating, took dump from db, analyzed the created_at time stamps. Installed app, tried to reproduce bug, everything worked. Tried API calls from postman, again worked. There were no error emails too.
So I asked for server access logs, devops took 4 hrs just to give me the log. Went through 4 million lines and found 500 errors on mobile apis. Went to the file, no error handling in place.
So I have a bug to fix which occurs 1 in 100 case, no stack trace, no idea what is failing. Fuck my job. -
So, I joined a hardware company as a software developer few months back. I'm working on a c++ code base with thousands of files and no idea what the code is supposed to do.
I got one overview of what the product is supposed to do, which contains mostly electrical engineering jargon that I have no clue about.
Now my manager wants me fix a bug in this code. I have no clue what the expected behaviour is and no documentation whatsoever, and literally no one in the entire country who understands the code.4 -
Fuck you, Nvidia. Uhm no, this time not from Torvalds, but EVGA: they're fed up with Nvidia's antics towards their AIB partners. No 4000 series EVGA GPUs anymore.

We have a list of 1.5k different dependencies for various projects. And they wanted to check if each of those deps has been approved by the management.
They have no way to automate this. (I believe there is always a way to automate any fucking thing but my pm says there is no way)
And no employee in the company was keen to do this task so they decided to give it to interns.
Now I am sitting on my table, copying each and every dep, pasting in the browser (on their portal ) and noting down if it's approved. If it's not, I have to note the latest version that had been approved.
I have been doing this from morning. 400 done. 1000 to go.

Dropped my trusty old Note 2 backup device this morning and it just keeps on ticking. No smoke just a nasty cracked screen. Sort of gives it character 😊1

Monodevelop.
I don't really know why, maybe the interface, but today, after uninstalling VS2015 and installing VS2017, I wanted to edit a script in Unity and when I clicked on it, Monodevelop started. I was like OOOH NOOO!! PLEASE NO!!3 -
Last day of our current Indian offshore dev. Talked with her about an issue we had, being aware that it was about her closing time.
She actually offered to put in additional time. Asked her not to do that, I'd figure things out with her successor, and asked her to enjoy her well-deserved long Indian weekend.
Me to my PM: we're chaotic, but we aren't assholes. He smiled. :)8 -
No Facebook for three weeks and haven't felt any need to check.

Have you ever thought to send a security code to the email the user put in the sign up form just to say him later "the password must contains at least 8 characters, etc." and ask him to fill the form again from scratch?
Who is so dumb to put the input check in this order? Honeywell.
- The email is correct?
- Ok, send a code and ask to confirm it
- The password meets the requirements?
- No, ask to confirm the email again just for fun.
I'll just ignore the waste of server resources to send N * Number of users emails for no reason.2 -
Let's see what's on the menu today:
* Web Application Catastrophe Special *
Includes, but not limited to:
- Orphaned server processes in the configuration management cluster
- Microservice back-end architecture with no API documentation
- Poorly implemented cache microservice with no documentation
- Stale data causing everything to be shown as down in production, despite everything running fine
Cost: 1 developer's sanity -
November is coming up. That means no mental illness month. Absolutely no front end or JS shit all month. Because it is going to be officially:

I have a question on the Signal app.
Two family members have an extensive chat history. One of them accidentally deleted the data. The backup function was not active. However, the other side still has all the data. Both are using Android smartphones.
How to transfer the data? Re-sending works only five messages at a time, which is not practical with some thousand messages.
Is it possible to export the data from one smartphone e.g. via USB to a PC, then import that via USB on the other?12 -
Just moved countries and started a new job at an awesome company, which is so great I have nothing yet to rant about.
Oh here goes: almost three weeks with no internet at home and no end in sight.2 -
Safari shows a blank page and no errors in the console. How the fuck are you supposed to debug that??4
-
You have a cake and a knife. You need 8 slice, but the knife is rubbish and will disintegrate after 2 cuts.
Its a really fun company I worked for.
No spoilers guys...14 -
So with the current project that I am working on, I'm in charge with creating various base classes, libraries, and helpers. The problem is that the other developers on the team just want to dive straight into developing the API endpoints without designing what the request and response formats should be, let alone decide what the URL structure should be!
So in the middle of their development work, they keep telling me how this and that don't work, or they can't figure out why Laravel is throwing this particular error. It's starting to piss me off that I'm having to do an architect's job whilst also teaching these guys how to use Laravel because they don't bother reading the documentation.
The worst part is that once they've completed their implementation, I'll have to end up fixing it because it's either missing a bunch of business rules, or it doesn't account for any error handling. -
That moment when there are no more new rants, you check algo, latest and read all top and you just sit there lookong at the screen...
(inner self: start working on your side projects !!!!) -
At work we develop for embedded systems. Using the heap can raise unknown effects sometimes. So we always try to avoid using it. To show our attitude regarding the heap we want to make T-Shirts like the No Ma'am shirts from Married... with Children but with No Heap instead of No Ma'am. Now we need a meaning of the acronym. Our currently idea is:
Nerdy
Opponents of
HEAP
E
Allocation
Practice
We do not find a good word for the E, we also aren't native speaker, thus we are not sure which synonym for word like based can be used in such context. So i want to ask if someone has a good idea or even a better idea for the whole acronym :)4 -
I just hate the word "menu" today
Even worse: menues
The Internet is a fucking restaurant!

I code for 2 1/2 days straight, I'm in the zone, no comments, because I'm not in some comp sci beginners class, finish up, test it the only problem is with... All of it... Just considering writing another program to comb through that one and find the mistakes for me3

While I was in my computer science bachelor, I had the VERY best coworkers. I would always make group projects with my friends BUT I decided to open my horizons! So I tried to find other classmates to work with.
ANNNNNND it was terrible...
Here’s a little list of why they couldn’t work during the projects:
_ Dude, I left my charger at home (I had one to share)
_ I’m gonna eat! (He never came back)
_ Sorry the wind is too strong, I can’t even open my door. I won’t come today! (It was just another rainy day in Paris)
_ Crap, I forgot to tell you it’s Chinese New Year today, I’m with my family! (Ok, no problem but he was missing 2 WEEKS! The time of our project)
And maybe my favorite:
“SORRY, I CAN’T JOIN YOU I DIDN’T MANAGE TO OPEN THE DOOR OF THE BUILDING”.
(The building was our school building and it was WIDE open...)
Fact is when you study computer science, it’s easier to work online with your coworkers but these one... They just never came online.
I think, now, no coworker can hurt me x) -
If I don't know Java and no plan to learning it how should i learn kotlin?

So I'm at work most of the day developing project managment system for better efficiency but I can't seem to keep my electricity bill up to date. Even when I do manage to get off on time my boss needs me on evenings and weekends.

A game lover and anticipator of No Man's Sky. It's the shittiest, most boring, most repetative game i ever played. the graphics sucks. the game assets suck...the game sucks. Oh no, yeah, little error icons with no accompanying error messages are my absolute favorite, especially when there's no apparent way to check what the error is.

Am I weird or is working in bars awesome?!

First thing is quite simply no overtime, I never EVER work overtime, you get my 8/9 hours a day, where I do work and that is it.
However, as dev's our minds never really shut off from 'coding' so if there are any bugs or complex issues, those most often get resolved when I am out for my run or cycle. -
Heh, a review of HHKB Pro 2, think someone missed the point haha.
/Offtopic
Anyone got this keyboard and recommends? I mean, if no one responds I'm buying anyway just nice to hear from devs on it3 -
Watched 2 different vendors struggle to get something going.
I stayed quiet during both meetings, the first, was a misconfiguration error on their project code. They were tailoring the product that they sold my institution, I could see the simple error: key-value settings on one of their json files (it is a dotneto app)
I don't get paid to troubleshoot the code for an external company, so I was silent, knowing full well this would take longer to get done, needless to say, I had originally advised against purchasing this product but was not listened to, very well then.
The other was a configuration issue on the side of a different Java based product, there were some strange XML configuration entries, some other project files that made little sense, but again: quiet.
Department head is concerned about the delays that this might cause and will still not ask if I am willing to help since he knows I A) was against this product purchase from the get go and B) knows DAMN well I will say that I don't get paid to troubleshoot the issues that third party vendors charging us over 100k of product "worth", they wanna spend the money on "enterprise" shit that does not work, they can deal with their own shit programs.
Morale of the story: money moves people. If there is no bling in my account: then I ain't doing it.
Now, I do get paid well for what I do, and for that I do bust my ass, for everything else: there is mastercard.11 -
I don't know if someone has noticed but I haven't been on DevRant lately. It's not that the community is awesome. In the last month or two, I've had a blast of an experience here. I've just been avoiding screens, specifically texts in screens. I think something snapped on my head last week. Here's why:
As I've said in other rants/comments, I study history, and at the moment, I haven't found any career that has to read more than this one. Sometimes I've had to read about 1200 pages in less than three days. Last week I had to read 6 books which accounted for about 3500 pages. I was actively reading more than 600 pages a day. Now, this was for an investigation, and each of these reads had to be properly summarised with their respective arguments, thesis, etc. So I intensely read everything before Thursday, the day in which I had to present my work, in which I referenced about 10 books.
Apart from that, daily, I spent 4 hours coding. That's been the minimum I've done daily since I started learning.
I wasn't too tired. I'm used to read a lot, and coding is always fun. But the problem came in Friday when I woke up with a strange headache that spanned from my eyes to the back of my ears. Hurting especially on the sides of my forehead.
It eventually dissipated, but whenever I read something, the ache slowly came back. Loud noises and bright lights also brought it back. So you could imagine, everytime I tried to read a Rant, comment, etc, the headache came back. The same for coding and reading. For fucks sake I feel like I'm fucking crippled.
And no, the pain isn't the worst. Pain is pain and you can't do anything about it. The worst is that I'm developing some anxiety here. In all this time I have been learning daily nonstop. Coding was something I craved for everyday. Now I'm fucking wasting entire days in non-productive activities. I'm losing my fucking time here guys!
I'm afraid I have some anxiety problem with time. I've already fucking wasted entire years, now I don't want to continue wasting them and push my goals further away, I want to get to my goals as soon as I can because time and life can't be stopped and once time is lost, you can't fucking get it back. And, considering I'm still 21, I do notice this feeling is somehow irrational, but for fucks sake, I'm wasting fucking LIFE :( -
Two weeks of camping ends tomorrow. Started missing coding after a week but no laptop carried with. Mind spends time thinking about projects to start.
-
Is anybody looking forward to the new No Man's Sky update? I haven't played it in a while, but damn, it's starting to look pretty slick. 👽5

There's an app saying you which Berlin subway doors you have to use to get faster to your goal. It's really the small ideas that change everything.... (no advert, it's not my app) https://play.google.com/store/apps/...2

Ok, so i havent been coding in a while, but now i have somthing rant worthy!
So i was helping a project and THERE WAS NO FUCKING COMMENTS, I mean what the shit! Atleast add some comments its as easy as typing //, what has come of this world?2 -
Was testing an editor for writing technical documentation. Asked their support:
Hey ___, am I right in thinking you can't paste images directly from clipboard into a document?
Couple of hours later:
Hi ___, yes, you can add images by uploading them: <url>
The URL they provide has no examples of being able to paste images directly from the clipboard. provides Trying to figure out if this is yes-but-no or no-but-yes. -
well well well.
i seem to like javascript syntax more than php.
there, i said it.
it´s not a post about php being bad. in fact i did and do nice things with it. but in the last few months i learned a lot about javascript and now the time has come i get a grasp on opinions of php being inconsistent. and a growing feeling of love for objects. maybe i just have not reached the dark pits of strange js-comparisons like similar objects not being equal. but still...
no, php, i will not abandon you. but sometimes we have to talk about our feelings. -
Started working with a startup. They have one Dev guy, who for some reason is using both python 3 and 2 in the same git repo, and had no requirement.txt or anything to really track dependencies....
For fuck sake, the Dev guy is actually intelligent, but really freaking messy.. why can't he have this basic thing done...1 -
Rejected for the job . Out in technical round, though i gave all the correct answers.

My first computer was an old Pentium 2 running windows 98 with no internet and just a CD Rom and Floppy Drive. Got it for my 7th Birthday I think and immediately wanted to make it do my biding.
Didn't work out. Had no clue what the words on screen meant and batch scripts looked like sorcery to me.
Hell even the options menu in German was a cryptic puzzle to me.
Got a little better in the meantime. -
Every time I have to explain to someone what projects I've done, and what I'm currently working on.
No, they're not the most useful and don't showcase any skill using this framework or that piece of knowledge. You're not the first to tell me. I like what I do and if I die hungry because of it, so be it. -
I mean where do I even begin
I am trying to fix up some really awful sloppy mistakes but since we only use svn and I don't have any sort of branch of my own I end up breaking other peoples builds while I try to fix their mistakes
And then I get yelled at and told to test the build somehow on their environment which is totally seperate to ours, and ensure there are no build problems
Even if said problems are svn conflicts they are apparently still my fault and evidence as failure on my part as a developer
I mean how do i even retort to that? Can I tell them to get stuffed, like seriously.. I have asked and checked in if there was any issues and they said nothing repeatedly
I have proposed the idea of a integration environment to test the commits of revisions and merging ect.
I got told off
For gods sakes2 -

Just made a damn fool of myself with a client. I handed off three projects and they had no idea what they were for and neither did I. My boss gave me these months ago. No code comments, no documentation, just some stored procedures they wanted me to actualize.
The best I could offer was to promise the client I would send a description of the projects to them as soon as my boss gets them to me. Fuck. I thought the client would know what they asked for when I showed them, but fuck me, they didn't remember. So embarrassing. 😡😡😡 -
Working from home.. no airconditioning.. no fan ('cause Covid particles danger).. f************ck.21

Thats so bad. Since about One week our Internet is broken. We don't have access anymore. You feel useless, because you can't do anything. No Phone (because its also with the Router) , No Internet, No real programming. You can't Look something Up, you can't Log into your Server, Database and so on.
And the shittest Thing about that is that the #Telekom is sorry to say that but absolutely Shit. We have made an appointement on friday. They should come to fix the issue. We have waited the whole day. He didn't came.. Now He wants to come again tomorrow...
I hope everything is right then and We have Internet again.. thats uncool.1 -
I've been running on practically no sleep for the past 4 days, I think the most I got one night was 5 and half hours of sleep with my average being more like 2 hours. Luckily I have broken leg that makes it so I can't work so I don't have to worry about going in but I do have the problem where I'm working on a project to hopefully replace a 3rd party piece of crap we use and I'm dead tired every time I work on it. But I also get great ideas and solve problems faster, so I'm trying to figure out if I should sleep or if I should just stay awake and attempt to push through with little to no sleep.1

Bad time management habits.
As for me, I've recently changed job and took some side projects and without some tricks (Getting Things Programmed) I would just end up shits creek without a paddle. I feel like I'm already in, but some tricks keep my numbers on the boards and I don't sink yet.
Also bad eating and no sport habits. -
When you have no time to learn by code snippet, you'd have to copy and paste it rather than writing it line by line.

I'm in need of advice. I reckon this is no stack overflow but that's probably for the best as I wouldn't feel as comfortable posting there as I am doing it here. So, back to the question: I'm currently working with legacy code, written in .NET 2.0. This code is responsible for calling upon PEC services in order to finally create personal smart cards. I was tasked with the job of creating a repository system that would allow the program to call on the old legacy services or the new ones without any distinction. We are talking about SOAP services in both cases. The issues is: the new service definition is comprised of soap policies. This wouldn't be a problem per se, with more modern version of the framework, but with .NET 2.0? Yes, it is. It doesn't support policies and signing the body with a certificate right out of the box. How can I manage this? I feel like the only way would be letting the proxy class do its thing up until the very last moment: intercept the SOAP request before its sent and modify it according to the specifications. But I reckon this is very bad practice. Is there any other way out of this?
Thanks for anyone that would like to help. 🙂6 -

Dear genie, make me take more notes. My brain is overconfident and thinks (hah) it can do/remember more than 1 thing at once. It's just a whole lotta "Hey, this is the solution to your problem! Also, look at that butterfly! By the way, I have no idea what the solution could be."4

Mediocre little shit? uhhh we won't promote him/her but whatever they do something at least.

Our team has to add some features to an existing application/platform. Its a mobile application with a server handling all the logic and a database for records storage. Fairly big project, a few 1000 lines. Ohh and did I mention that there is absolutely NO DOCUMENTATION???! Why on earth would you even be like ohhh let's do this project but write absolutely no documentation for it! Why???1

So, I've been with my current employer four years now, three and a half of which have been spent working as a time material developer for a huge fashion company. I've been trying to get out of It for the past six months only for my exit to be postponed everytime. There's also no clear idea as to what I would be moved to, going forward. Nobody Is telling me a thing and I think other developers will be moved to different projects before I do.
That's why I took matters into my own hands and started getting back into the recruitement process. I'm about to receive an offer. A fairly better one.
The thing is, I wanna use such offer to see if my current employer can reedem himself and propose to me a good counter offer. I'm not in the mood of starting over, but I want security and management to have a fucking idea of what my future Is gonna be like at this fucking company.
What do you guys think? Am I playing with Fire?1 -
Anybody heard of Clef - A new way to login? It's pretty coool! I've integrated it in one of my projects and it works like a charm..!

Why... why they have to be like that?
https://github.com/micro/micro/... was reported 11 days ago, I have this issue with the dashboard inside docker than registers no services nor clients, a shame because this enables testing and that comes handy specially if you have never ever done micro-services.
Despite linking to a minimal example that reproduces the issue I have in my project I'm not getting any support from the developers of Go Micro other than "use the latest Docker image, it shouldn't panic", sadly others give it a try too but their directions won't fix the problem.
So this makes me wonder, after 11 days and a minimal reproducible example provided from day one, why no developer have offered any hint of what I'm doing wrong? they know their software, it should be easier for them to spot why the bloody dashboard is not working as it should.7 -

If you use brackets, I wrote an extension that lets you hop outside of auto-completed (), [ ], and {}. it's called TabEx and I'd love your feedback!

Wanted to start a little project of writing a website from scratch with a given template. No framework, just a basic thing. Apparently I've already done some work, long ago. And of course, I don't understand several parts anymore that are written. All knowledge and context gone. fuck...
At least I've realized I went for BEM css, instead of my utility css approach nowadays. Now the css has become hard to change, without accidentally breaking things. Also no git, surely because it was "just a small thing". Almost about to delete and redo. Fuck fuck fuck!1 -

I just made a complete list of 185+ excellent no-code tools you can use to build your next million-dollar app.

This startup contracted me to develop an app for them. They gave me the mockups and said they need it in 7 weeks. Two apps in 7 weeks, no problemo. Almost done with the first app then they came saying they are changing everything. How can you decide to change your entire app and concept mid development? You haven’t even tested the market to know whether your idea holds.3

So, I am in the last stages of development of a really big project and I need to figure out a way to package future patches and updates for the client in order for them to manually update the project on prod server.
For reasons I cannot specify here, they will not use any automated process, and we need to provide regular patches and updates for the next year.
So I was thinking of using git archive to package changed files from our repo for every new commit, or series of commits, and just give them that, along with any database schema updates as sql files (again, no automation can be used).
We are talking about a large PHP + MySQL app, and cannot use automated deployment strategies.
I feel there must be a better way to do this, but this is the best I could come up with so far.
What do you people think?
Any ideeas?
