So I decided to give Linux a try again.
Created live usb. Prepared myself to go through all the hassles at the beginning.
Booted in live USB. I can't see mouse cursor.
Searched in google, apparently a common problem with GTX 1070/1080 graphics cards.
Installed proprietary nvidia drivers with keyboard only. Took me about 20 minutes.
Finally managed to get the mouse cursor and install ubuntu. Time to boot and smell the fresh air of linux again.
Sound card doesn't work. Even the integrated mobo sound card doesn't work. Looked for a solution, found the bug in lunchpad but not solution yet. Everyone recommending to buy an external sound card.
I can't code without music. Decided to remove linux.
Booted back to Windows and removed linux partition. That fucked up my bootloader although I installed linux's efi loader completely separately.
Now I am sitting in front of my computer, with black grub screen, while trying to make a Windows 10 usb with my 7 years old broken laptop.
Next time I see a rant about Windows 10 that glorifies linux, I swear I'm gonna smack your face over standard TCP/IP47 -
Manager: Hey what was that that you closed on your screen just now?
Dev: That popup? That’s NVIDIA letting me know that a new driver for my GPU is available.
Manager: Isn’t that for video games?
Dev: I mean that’s the reason many people opt into having a GPU but It’s not the on—
Manager: You are NOT allowed to play video games on your work computer!
Dev: This is my personal computer. It’s just an older GPU I popped onto this computer since otherwise it was just sitting in a drawer. My work computer is out of commission.
Manager: Well where is your work computer? How come you are not using it?
Dev: …Because of that blue screen of death issue we talked about yesterday.
Manager: Ok but that doesn’t give you permission to play VIDEO GAMES on your *WORK* computer.
Dev: …26 -
So Nvidia doesn't let you use their GeForce Experience app anymore without logging in.
*Uninstalled*
Fuck that, I don't want to login so I can see an FPS counter in my ganes or record them to my local disk or something like that... Fuck you Nvidia and fuck whoever decided that would be a good idea.6 -
Finally got around to installing Arch on an actual machine 😀
I went for deepin since i wanted to try something new. I didn't go for any WMs since the whole concept seems complicated to me but i wanna look into it someday.
Anyways, super happy so far. I boot in < 5s from hitting the power button which is super dope ♥️ ♥️. I did have some weirdness with nvidia drivers (as usual on linux lol) but reinstalling it fixed it.40 -

Favorite stickers are definitely the double-take-inducing stickers I made myself. Here's an AMD in Intel style sticker. I also made AMD Radeon in Nvidia GTX style, and vice versa of both of those. Plus an Intel Potato Inside, and Intel HD Graphics in Nvidia style.
They hold up better than the actual Nvidia stickers, although the color is a little off.8 -
Nvidia is currently running a competition on their Omniverse platform to win a top of the line RTX card
All you need to do is create a visually impressive raytracing tech demo... which requires a powerful RTX card... to win a powerful RTX card
Thanks guys3 -
--- NVIDIA announces PhysX SDK 4.0, open-sources 3.4 under modified BSD license ---
NVIDIA has announced a new version, 4.0, of PhysX, their physics simulation engine.
Its new features include:
- A "Temporal Gauss-Seidel Solver (TGS)", an algorithm used in this SDK to make things such as robots, character arms, etc. more robust to move around. NVIDIA demonstrates this in the video by making their old version of PhysX, 3.4, seem like an unpredictable mess, the robot demonstrating that version smashing a game of chess.
- New filtering rules for supposedly easier scalability in scenes containing lots of both moving and static objects.
- Faster queries in scenes with actors that have a lot of shapes attached to them, improving performance.
- PhysX can now be more easily used with Cmake-based projects.
In essence, better control over scenes and actors as well as performance improvements are what's new.
Furthermore, NVIDIA has released PhysX version 3.4 under the 3-Clause-BSD-license, except for game console platforms.
As NVIDIA will release the new version on December 20th, it will also be released under the same modified BSD license as PhysX 3.4 is now.
What are your thoughts on NVIDIA making a big move towards the open-source community by releasing PhysX under the BSD license? Feel free to let us know in the comments!

After years of struggle with nvidia on Linux across several devices I built my first AMD only PC and I have only one thing in my mind...5
-
Half life 2 runs smoothly in a 12 year old PC with Nvidia 8500, 1 GB RAM, and a dual core.
A FPS with wavy water reflection, body physics and huge designed maps which is updates every fucking frame.
Today I can't run smoothly an IDE with 8 GB of RAM and 4 cores.
A program which only reacts to events stutters if I write at more than 3 letters per sec.
I wanna go back. Can we go back? Lets keep the new hardware and go back with the software pleeeease.20 -
I hate windows. Today I opened nvidia geforce experience and in the list of my games at the end there was a new game: "Minecraft: windows 10 edition", WTF???, I never installed it! Like always a google search saved me: After last updates windows will install suggested apps WITHOUT your permission. And to disable this you must edit a key in regedit. Not even a switch in system settings! Microsoft wtf are you doing?47

But can it run Minecraft with shaders though?5 -
Use Linux desktop they said.
It'll be fun they said.
So much to configure.
Such fun.
18 hours later and hibernation, Bluetooth, Sound and Nvidia Optimus still not working after countless modprobes and config changes.
Hello again, Windows. You make me feel safe.
I'll just stick to Linux on servers and nothing more.41 -
Thought of buying an HTC Vive then I realized I would need to add a few things to my shopping list:
- 16 GB Ram cards
- Windows 10
- 2 TB Hard drive
- NVIDIA Graphics Card
- HDMI Display Port/Controller
- 2 monitors
My parents ended up getting me a Google Cardboard6 -
Updated Nvidia drivers, installed latest wine, Vulkan, DXVK (<3) and Overwatch. It now runs on ultra on Ubuntu 16.04 with around the same fps as on high on Windows. Gotta love the Linux community!12

*Notices that SMPlayer takes a lot of the iGPU and CPU*
*Relaunches SMPlayer to use dedicated Nvidia GPU*
> I don't really want to play videos anymore when running on this card.
> MPlayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM.
(that last one is an actual log btw)
Alright, got it. I bought this fucking PC just for its fucking "powerful" GPU. It already locked me into using WanBLowS on that piece of garbage. Yet now that NvuDiA piece of garbage is gonna act worse than a fucking paperweight?! Seriously?!!
FUCK YOU NVIDIA!!! Linus Torvalds called your shitty cards shit on Linux.. I call it shit on every fucking OS out there!!! MOTHERFUCKERS!!!3 -
GTX 1080 now down to $499 due to 1080ti release!
..bought an aftermarket 1070 for $450 just a few months ago.
I'm not mad, just disappointed.8 -
How I see GPU brands:
- Team blue, Intel:
Oldschool autistic engineers, working GPU but not practical
- Team red, AMD:
Competitive but anarchist, horrid Windows drivers, but good on opensource, anti-mainstream
- Team green, nVidia:
Way too greedy cunts circlejerking each others off during breaks (like Apple employees), delivering on performance, but wayyy overpriced and scammy tactics6 -
*gets countless amounts of shit with Windows because of my "nonstandard use"*
WanBLowS fanbois: "Cheap hardware!! Hardware error!! Unstable drivers!!! Can't be anything else, this OS is rock solid."
I really wish that I had your ignorance. I know when I see a shitty OS in front of me. And mind you, it actually ran Linux a while back.. just that I couldn't use my Nvidia GPU in it and had to compile a kernel with all of that crap excluded to make it work decently.. fuck Nvidia. And you know what, it actually did run fucking rock solid!!! But over time I lost the config and X.org doesn't like my dualhead setup all that much, especially the ultrawide display.
So, how about we address this issue for what it is already. THE OS FUCKING SUCKS!!!21 -
Advertising your laptops as "linux-laptops" but shipping only with nvidia-gpu should be punishable by death.25
-
Nvidia makes real time ray tracing and a ehole bunch of graphics stuff beyond our imagination but they can't make a linux driver that actually works well... For ducks sake9

I'm 4 days into my new job, and so far I am absolutely loving it. Here's my setup. Yes, they gave me 3 monitors plus a laptop, so my setup has 5 screens! Now I can die happy :D
Definitely worth noting as well, since it caught me by surprise - the company-supplied laptop is a powerhouse. High-end i7 CPU, mid-to-high-end NVIDIA GPU, tons of ports, 1TB HD, 4K display, and 48 GB RAM. Yes, 48 GB. I am truly blessed, starting off my career with this. ^_^rant excessive ram my dream finally came true hello innumerable open tabs multi-monitor setup goodbye lag11 -
nVidia, fuck you
Just fuck you!
FUCK YOU!!
WHY CAN’T YOU JUST DO LIKE ALL THE OTHER MANUFACTURERS!!
WHY CAN’T YOU JUST PUBLISH OPEN SOURCE DRIVERS THAT WORK WITH MODERN TECHNOLOGICAL STANDARDS AND NOT YOUR OWN PROPRIETARY LITTLE PIECE OF SHIT SOLUTION!!!

Holy fuck nvidia. Why the fuck you want me to login to your fucking app in order to download a fucking driver. You also want me to click a fucking link that you sent to my email for verification on every fucking login? Why on earth someone would stole my fucking nvidia account? To see which drivers I use? What the fuck nvidia? Oh wait. DO YOU DARE ASK ME TO SETUP TWO FACTOR AUTH TO SECURE MY ACCOUNT?!? What the fuck? Even if I put my credentials online no one would care to login my fucking nvidia account. Just let me download my fucking driver!6
-
Sorry if this sounds like retard question on linux system
I installed nvidia driver on my laptop (720M) and it showed black screen after reboot, BUT if I enter my password and hit enter the screen goes back to normal on desktop, it just didn’t show anything on the first lock screen
I’ve followed linux mint nvidia driver instructions, removing the package re installing, etc.
P.S. All of the question I found on the internet seems to be total black screen after installing the driver, whereas mine could work after I entered my password8 -
Why the absolute fuck do I need to have nvidia membership to download cudnn? What evil do these mofos think people achieve with free access to a fucking programming tool?
Jesus on a bike! I nag about open science and all I end up with is always these spying morons, who purposefully disable scientists. Fuck!
If👏you👏need👏my👏info,👏then it's👏not👏free.👏17 -
My girlfriend asked me for help picking out a new laptop for school... being the helpful person I am, I picked out this but with Arch Linux because who needs 2 Nvidia cards anyways10
-
So yesterday evening I was going to play some games. Checked NVIDIA and saw new update (no beta). So I went to install it and it literally fucked up my graphics card.
One monitor stopped working instantly and the other one got this old tv effect like when you had no signal.
Took me two hours to downgrade to my old drivers because I couldn't fucking see shit.
PLS NVIDIA DONT PUSH NEW DRIVERS IF YOU FUCKIN NOT TESTED THEM11 -
Dear manufacturers..
Can we stop releasing special edition products and calling them 'Founders Edition'... How do you get the 'Founder' part?
Primary example are Google and NVIDIA, massive companies with enough money to do whatever they wanted and selling a controller or graphics card as 'Founder' is just bullshit, we aren't founding anything, its already there so just call it what it is, a slightly 'Pretty Edition' and call it a day .-.10 -
Just now, I managed to compile my first linux kernel for my laptop on the first try :D
Granted, it was just a single line to get my touchpad to work, still a great feeling.
Also, Nvidia is still going strong on my laptop, no problems whatsoever :)6 -
I've run into my first nVidia driver issues. Ever. ☹
I'm attempting to install the drivers on my shiny new Dell XPS15 8750. It has both an Intel (default) and nVidia graphics card; the Intel works just fine out of the box with Nouveau, with terrible fps. Installing the nVidia drivers causes a conflict with those, and X just displays a black screen. I can still interact via the virtual terminals, but with a 4k display it's kind of annoying.
I'm currently trying to install nvidia-bumblebee and related crap, bur it is not going well.15 -
This freaking laptop.
The WiFi randomly stops working -- and by that, I mean the hardware is no longer detectable, let alone functional. It simply disappears on boot, even from dmesg.
The same happens with audio and bluetooth: on some boots they simply do not exist.
The power usage is also ridiculous: the battery dies in about two hours, and it gets soo hot. Toasty wrists unless I use my tiny bluetooth keyboard ☹ So I need to fiddle with powertop a bit more.
nVidia drivers are also a bloody pain, and having two graphics cards this is even more difficult to set up. I still haven't managed. (nvidia-driver, bumblebee, optimus, official driver messes, manual xorg configs, ...). So I have a beautiful 4k built-in display running at 4-18 fps, and a non-functional 4k external. That's fine for now, but >.>; frustrating.
In better news! I just managed to get the sound to work by backporting the new 4.19 kernel (yay!) -- I have never been so happy to hear an ad. but fixing the sound killed my bluetooth. (The `bluetooth` utility reports the adapter is present, but nothing else can seem to see it 🙄) So now I'm going to have burning hot wrists all day and want to cry because terrible sweaty awfulness.
Just. It's frustrating.
It's fast, though.
and ever so pretty.28 -
MAD scientist time! Can the USB type C port on Nvidia RTX tuning card used as a standard USB port? Eg charging your phone, or read USB flash drive🤔35

Ok friends let's try to compile Flownet2 with Torch. It's made by NVIDIA themselves so there won't be any problem at all with dependencies right?????? /s
Let's use Deep Learning AMI with a K80 on AWS, totally updated and ready to go super great always works with everything else.
> CUDA error
> CuDNN version mismatch
> CUDA versions overwrite
> Library paths not updated ever
> Torch 0.4.1 doesn't work so have to go back to Torch 0.4
> Flownet doesn't compile, get bunch of CUDA errors piece of shit code
> online forums have lots of questions and 0 answers
> Decide to skip straight to vid2vid
> More cuda errors
> Can't compile the fucking 2d kernel
> Through some act of God reinstalling cuda and CuDNN, manage to finally compile Flownet2
> Try running
> "Kernel image" error
> excusemewhatthefuck.jpg
> Try without a label map because fuck it the instructions and flags they gave are basically guaranteed not to work, it's fucking Nvidia amirite
> Enormous fucking CUDA error and Torch error, makes no sense, online no one agrees and 0 answers again
> Try again but this time on a clean machine
> Still no go
> Last resort, use the docker image they themselves provided of flownet
> Same fucking error
> While in the process of debugging, realize my training image set is also bound to have bad results because "directly concatenating" images together as they claim in the paper actually has horrible results, and the network doesn't accept 6 channel input no matter what, so the only way to get around this is to make 2 images (3 * 2 = 6 quick maths)
> Fix my training data, fuck Nvidia dude who gave me wrong info
> Try again
> Same fucking errors
> Doesn't give nay helpful information, just spits out a bunch of fucking memory addresses and long function names from the CUDA core
> Try reinstalling and then making a basic torch network, works perfectly fine
> FINALLY.png
> Setup vid2vid and flownet again
> SAME FUCKING ERROR
> Try to build the entire network in tensorflow
> CUDA error
> CuDNN version mismatch
> Doesn't work with TF
> HAVE TO FUCKING DOWNGEADE DRIVERS TOO
> TF doesn't support latest cuda because no one in the ML community can be bothered to support anything other than their own machine
> After setting up everything again, realize have no space left on 75gb machine
> Try torch again, hoping that the entire change will fix things
At this point I'll leave a space so you can try to guess what happened next before seeing the result.
Ready?

> SAME FUCKING ERROR
In conclusion, NVIDIA is a fucking piece of shit that can't make their own libraries compatible with themselves, and can't be fucked to write instructions that actually work.
If anyone has vid2vid working or has gotten around the kernel image error for AWS K80s please throw me a lifeline, in exchange you can have my soul or what little is left of it5 -
Oh man!!!
I have to uninstall my linux and go back to windows... But I dont want to... C++ in vim is soooooo much more productive...
But goddamm my gaming laptop and its nvidia optimus "technology"!!!!
DAAAMMMM YOOOUUUUU NVIDIA!!!!!!!
PS. Dual booting is a nightmare too with windows 10 so... Yea... Not gonna happen19 -
Exploring my work machine today
- Nvidia control panel icon in the taskbar
Why is that there? *Click*
- No screens connected to an Nvidia device.
- Goes to system information
- GTX 1050
- Look around back, all of the displays are plugged into system video on the motherboard.
- Facepalm, plug into the GPU2 -
Cool, so it looks like updating my nVidia drivers somehow killed LUKS on my machine? or whatever happens immediately after decrypting the volume group; honestly can’t tell.
To the uninitiated, this means my machine no longer boots. Like, at all.
Looks like I’m spending tomorrow reverting. 😕10 -
That's it, the Nintendo Switch got fully exploited. Any firmware!
And only after about a year. nVidia absolutely screwed up with their security.

Casually debugging some cuda code today. Something's not working so I add a breakpoint in the suspicious kernel. For some reason I set the display GPU as the active device from my code *GENIUS* ( I have two GPUs installed, one for compute, one for the monitors).
Starts cuda debugging... Control flow reached the kernel and eventually the breakpoint. Suddenly the whole system freezes. Mouse doesn't move, keyboard seems dead. I realize I have unsaved code on the open text editor😲 *panic*. Keyboard shortcut to stop debugging doesn't work *panic^2*. My colleague says I have to hard reset the machine *panic^3*. I don't remember the last time I saved *panic^4*.
I take a deep breath. I reset. *sidenote: WINDOWS DECIDED TO FUCKING UPDATE ON REBOOT* Once I login, 50% of my code was lost. I didn't save 😢
Fuck you Nvidia 😢7 -
/* My Three Wishes */
1. Nvidia starts fucking supporting the linux community with open source mainlined drivers that support GBM.
2. All five eyes countries apply some proper privacy protection laws. Other countries would be appreciated.
3. 5G and other core future tech standards are implemented under open firmware/hardware that can be reviewed and reproduced.
Please monkey paw this3 -
Ok I give up. I concede. I can't take one more second of trying to get ANY window manager to run under Arch with an Nvidia GPU.
Back to Debian it is...18 -
I am building a PC for my first time and thought about every step more than twice. This is going to be my build:
Processor: AMD Ryzen™ 7 2700
Mainboard: X370
RAM: Corsair DIMM 8 GB DDR4-2400
Video card: Zotac NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
SSD: Samsung 960 EVO 250 GB
HDD: Seagate ST1000DM010 1 TB
PSU: PURE POWER 10 | 300W
Case: Aerocool Cylon RGB Midi-Tower - black
What are your opinions on this build?59 -
nvidia makes me sick, nvidia fucks with my kernel, nvidia earned a place in hell, nvidia is shit, nvidia runs like garbage stuffed in to my motherboard, nvidia is so expensive, nvidia made my work harder and that's not what computers are meant to, nvidia's website sucks, nvidia has no solutions if you're running on GNU/Linux, nvidia owes me money, time and tons of coffee, nvidia is so much a pain in my ass.
nvidia is now on my shitlist, just before apple, followed by adobe.17 -
Hands Down it's Linus Torvalds.
He is cocky, arrogant, moody and always speaks out his opinion which is most of the times should be censored.

New toy. However, I am at a dilemma. Do I keep its aesthetic nice and clean, or do I make it awesome with stickers. Also. Do I take off the intel and nvidia stickers to clean it up further. Decisions decisions.35

Probably a little different shitty teacher!
Had a course in basic computer architecture and the teacher was way to over qualified to have that course. This is a guy who presents his research to Nvidia and Intel but is forced to teach a intro level course...
The result? He was completely unmotivated and unprepared for the lectures and was of no help on the assignments. Fortunately we had a awesome teaching assistant who saved the entire course for me and my friends. Seriously, kudos to that guy!1 -
To this day I still don't know how the hell Nvidia makes some of the most powerful graphics cards available, yet manages to somehow also write the shittiest software among them. Somehow not only their control panel application takes an eternity to start, their context menu option makes that run like trash, and even Windows Explorer doesn't go unaffected.
But the solution as always: throw more hardware at it. Maybe that's why they make such powerful cards.9 -
Fuck android studio updates, fuck OpenGL libraries, fuck nvidia graphics on Linux, fuck it all to hell.
These bullshit updates keep breaking stuff in apps, and then the emulator itself gets broken somehow, then I need to run a bullshit shell script I found on some esoteric Arch Linux forum to symlink OpenGL .so libraries on my Linux machine every time I update because fucking OpenGL and nvidia crappy drivers on Linux, which also broke my xrandr configs and segfaulted the xfce4-display app.
Seriously that's horseshit. Linux will never ever ever break through the glass ceiling and become idiot-proof non-tech user friendly like the botnets Winblows and macPrison.6 -
I just ran system updates on my PC and it looks like Nvidia has enabled ultra dark mode on their new 455 driver by default.8
-
I know I'm late to the party with GPU passthrough, but holy crap is it great! I first tried to set it up with an old GeForce 1050 ti, but damned if nvidia isn't completely worthy of that middle finger Linus gave them. I switched to an older Radeon(rx570) and it worked PERFECTLY. I have a fully accelerated windows desktop running as a VM now that I can connect to via parsec.
Big fan.5 -
Working on a custom Chromium OS board at the moment
So boards in Chromium OS are specialized versions of Chromium OS built for a specific hardware while maintaining upstream compatibility.
I built a board specifically to be as near as CloudReady's compatibility table as possible, so this is what I have at the moment:
* Most hardware works (Libinput)
* Still working on supplying Nvidia drivers using nouveau (Google insists using OSS drivers, we can't use NVIDIA drivers)
* Still working on making Crostini GPU-enabled by default so I don't always terminate it via vmc
* ARC works as per the open sourced Android Runtime but I need help making the Play Store working
Overall its a bit stable but if anyone's down I'll replicate it on a GitHub repository and I'll let everyone contribute their changes. The aim of the custom board is to:
* Make it work on most hardware possible
* Add android support with APK installation (FydeOS has this but I can't replicate it in CrOS).
* Produce a close to Chrome's release channel.
Here's a screenshot of me using it, it works but I'll need to start over from scratch to make it more contributable10 -
Nvidia might stop being a douchebag about Linux: https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/... Right now, that doesn't change much yet, but it opens a possible road.19

I'm an advocate of free software, debian specifically, hell my business runs on it!
But sometimes you just can't get around to use proprietry software. One of those is nvidia....
WHAT THE FUCKING MESSED UP NAGGING NARK SHIT NVIDIA!!! YOU FUCKING BREAK MY SYSTEM! YOU WONT PROPERLY COMPILE YOUR KERNEL MODULE, YOU BREAK MY X, AND ONCE I FIXED ALL THOSE THINGS MANUALLY(!) YOU HAVE THE FUCKING GUTS TO NOT EVEN DETECT MY SCREENS PROPERLY
WHAT THE FUCKING SHIT!!! NVIDIA YOU SUCK!!! MOTHERFUCKER DO I REALLY HAVE TO FALL BACK TO INTEL GRAPHICS??? FUCK YOUR FUCKING COMPANY AND ESPECIALLY YOUR LINUX SUPPORT
And no i am not planning to use ATI since they dont support EGL, what is a dependency for the gnome desktop...6 -
Got a Radeon RX 570 to complete my light gaming and rendering setup. This is easily the most powerful GPU I have ever owned, super hyped to try out all my games on this now. Works great after it crashed under Linux a few times for god knows what reasons but hey, not disappointed at all so far.
All AMD setup here (Ryzen + Radeon), feels good to be back on AMD after a long Intel/Nvidia stint.10 -
Nvidia Optimus sucks ass.
Seriously, getting this shit to run on Linux is a pain, and the pain never ends because you need to run all graphics-heavy programs from the terminal with a specific command, otherwise they can't even fucking detect the video card.6 -
The moment when NVIDIA realise they just compared there too of the line laptop chip to what is essentially a mid range device... I mean... The math checks out but you know... You compare nano to vim and you know what that looks like8

Fffuuuck you Nvidia, you worthless piece of shit company. There's a part of the world that doesn't use Windows. Grow the fuck up. Torvalds gesture makes complete sense when you get a new kickass laptop, load kickass fedora 25, but are unable to tap into it's graphic potential. You spend 2 days trying to install the fucking driver. The next day you decide to follow one blogpost instead of 2 and You're forced to reinstall fedora and the cycle repeats. The past 4 days have been painfully unproductive.11

Video Card: NVIDIA GTX 660 2GB / AMD HD7870 2GB.
Sound Card: 100% DirectX 10 compatible.
HDD Space: 65GB.3 -
I gave you a chance, Nvidia. It could have been a good thing, but no. You are still crap. About two years ago, my son's graphics card (an Nvidia) died, so I thought, I'll give him my nice Radeon card, and got myself a new card. For some reason, reason failed me, and I got a GTX 1070. It's been a nice enough card, and worked well. And then the last driver update happened. Fallout 4 started to CTD before it even booted to the main menu. Me, not thinking (again) thought it was a mod, so I uninstalled and deleted and reinstalled again, with all 120 mods. Nope. Still crashing. Then I noticed, as the game booted, the fans started to ramp up, and I could tell exactly when it would crash be the sound of fans. I was expecting the computer to taxi out the room. Rolled the driver update back to the last one that worked. Now I can log in again, and things are mostly stable. Still crashes, but not as bad, probably due to reloading the mods and missing something. When the RX 3080 hits the market, bye bye Nvidia. You haven't changed a bit over the years. We're through.8

I downloaded Lapsus$ source code leaks from samsung, nvidia and microsoft, looked at them and I think I’ll delete it cause I don’t like shitty code on my personal computer.

It took me 5!!!! fucking hours to do it but I did.
I got linux to work with my RTX 2070 oh my god
Most of that time was spent figuring out what exactly was wrong because the problem is hella common but the cause doesn’t seem to be so i was sent off in the completely wrong direction a bunch of times
Apparently Nouveau doesn’t support my GPU yet and installing the binary driver from nvidia seemed impossible but i pulled it off thanks to some random stranger on askubuntu.com
Unfortunately i got it working on elementary os instead of ubuntu so now i have to go install ubuntu 🤷♂️13 -

Yay!
So I finally dual booted ubuntu 16 lts alongside w10 on a laptop with nvidia optimus.
As have next to 0 XP with linux systems almost every step needed extensive googling, but in the end I have
- cinnamon
- vs code
- git
- cloned my xmlRant repo that uses asp.net core 1.1.2
- built it sucessfully
- *bonus* figured out how to use remmina to connect rdp to workplaces win 2008 r2 gateway
Very happy ^___^2 -
People talking about NVIDIA drivers on Linux and how bad those are. Pretty sure that if I had any recent GTX 1080 I'e be able to actually play Rocket League on any fucking Linux distro. AMD drivers are worse. How the fuck can I have my RX 480 work in 3D applications (read: Rocket League) on any other Linux distro than Ubuntu 16.04? The internet doesn't have a solution for me.11

Remember that kid with the dual Xeon, Nvidia Titan X SLI and 64GB of RAM, that he uses just to compile Gentoo and run bspwm on it?
Looks like he's designed a car now.2 -
Nvidia at it again. After receiving backlash for trying to pass off a 4070 as 4080/12GB, und "unlaunching" it, they did the same shit again.
This time with a 3060/8GB. Yes, as RTX 3060, a well established product with a lot of reviews, intentionally misleading the customers who think that a 3060 is always the regular 12GB model. And the new shit isn't even cheaper.
The main issue isn't the reduced amount of VRAM, it's cutting down the memory bus from 192 to 128 bits, that costs quite some performance.
So if you see a 3060 and think it might be a bargain, watch out that you don't accidentally end up with the "bait and switch" 8GB model.
Or even better, consider a 6650 XT that is both faster and cheaper than a 3060, and RT is lackluster on the small RTX cards anyway.7 -

Fuck linux and fuck nvidia... I am dual booting my laptop with win10 and manjaro, but I really want to be able to completely switch to manjaro and get rid of windows. The only problem I have is that it's literally fucking impossible to install the divers for my 1050ti properly. I've looked at several forums where people were having similar issues, I've watched youtube videos, I've tried everything but I can never get it right, something is always fucked. I don't even know where I should look for help...11

Got ncmpcpp/cava/mpd working! (if you're wondering why it's ubuntu, just read a few rants ago :'^> ) and loving it. i gues i'll just open this up for people to post rices or any sort of pretty config. i still shill arch, just not if you like steam and have an nvidia graphics card! i'm in school and i don't really have time to sit down and learn what i broke and how to fix it, even if its a minor issue.8
-
So I just bought my new laptop and I'm thinking "Forget about Arch. I don't have time to waste now. Let's just install Debian and save time for important tasks I have. Why should I redo everything that is done, while I have enough undone jobs already."
2 days later, at last I managed to install nvidia hybrid drivers and get it to work successfully. Now I just have to find out the cause of the black screen I get when it recovers from suspend.7 -
Linux gurus: any idea how to fix this? All images with gradients look like this. Latest nvidia driver installed by Mint 18.1.
I tried to google it, but I found nothing.23 -
TL:DR; DON'T GET INTEL+NVIDIA LAPTOP FOR LINUX.
In the same vain as Linus Torvalds: "Fuck Nvidia, and Intel".
Trying to get intel+nvidia laptop prime w/e working is a living hell.
I'm running Manjaro(arch for lazy people) with I3-gaps(larbs).
So Manjaro provides this handy script/program mhwd that supposedly would enable the non free blob Nvidia driver except it doesn't work cause it uses bumblebee and it's saying it can't find the clearly installed fucking Nvidia driver.
Bashing my head against a wall is more fucking productive then getting my cum stain of laptop to work properly.
"Just disable the intel graphics in bios"
I would except my old shitty Acer bios piece of fucking crap can't even after booting Windows for usb hdd and flashing BIOS.
GUESS WHAT LINUX COMMUNITY THAT'S WHY NOBODY WANTS TO FREAKING USE LINUX FOR GAMING.
I fucking love Linux but I gave up gaming for it.
I'll start joining red team from now on instead of trying to use your broken shit.19 -

This is true incident.
I fried the motherboard of my new Windows 10 Home ASUS UX303UA laptop having 8 fucking gigs of RAM and 1TB HDD with dedicated Nvidia Graphics Card and video memory by just trying to repeat what I love to do which is :
Install and play Crysis on EA Origin paid channel
And
Install and program on Linux VM using Virtualbox
And
Listen to music
I am so fucking scared now that I am not going to repeat it again.
I fuck the fear of using such machines.21 -
Just tried out Minecraft's shader mod SEUS and wondering what the fuck am I doing with my life being a web dev and not working on graphics.

Everytime you use OpenGL in a brand new project you have to go through the ceremonial blindfolded obstacle course that is getting the first damn triangle to show up. Is the shader code right? Did I forget to check an error on this buffer upload? Is my texture incomplete? Am I bad at matrix math? (Spoiler alert: usually yes) Did I not GL enable something? Is my context setup wrong? Did Nvidia release drivers that grep for my window title and refuse to display any geometry in it?
Oh. Needed to glViewport. OK.4 -
People ask me why I prefer Windows: decided to install Mint, it crashed upon choosing a timezone. Had to not set a timezone to move past that bug. Then the install hangs. As many here might be aware, the new RTX series dropped! With this, a lot more performances… and a lot more power consumption
At this rate you'll soon need a dedicated grid to power this shit. This is pissing me off, as we're not living in times of energetic abundance. Prices of fuel skyrocket due to the situation in Eastern Europe, and we need more than ever to find alternative energy sources that don't mess our planet further up. So the last thing we need is some piece of computer hardware that chugs near as much as a fucking vacuum cleaner
There's a petition treating of that with more details, if you agree this is a problem, it would be awesome if you could sign it and share it everywhere you can

I knew this might be an issue, but really Linux just sucks balls. It may not be Linux's fault, but the user experience could be a fuck ton better.
Spent 1.5 hours trying to get mint installed on second drive. It works fine if you don't want to do anything with it.
As you can probably surmise I died on getting the gpu driver installed. Just starts to a black screen. No amount of juggling is helping. It just refuses to show the screen with an nvidia driver installed. What is worse is that settings that might help are not set. Like nomodeset in grub. If you know some drivers fuck up the grub interface then add nomodeset and not leave it up to the user to "figure this shit out". Because users are tired of figuring this shit out.
Really really fucking disappointed. I thought to myself: lets install steam and see how it does. The reality: fucking stuck for 1.5 hours on trying to boot into x with graphics acceleration and failing.
Many of you hate on windows, but one thing it has going for it. It doesn't do fucked up shit like this. It has failsafes that try and account for this.
Fuck you linux. You need to fucking grow up and stop relying on users to fix every damn thing in the command line. Go back to server where you belong.
I know I will get the "I told you so" messages, but guess what? The computer I got doesn't come preinstalled with windows. You have to pay to get it. At this point windows is the only fucking viable solution to make my shit work.
Nvidia, go die in a fire bitch. Fix your fucking Linux support you worthless shit heads.
This has been a rant brought to you by "the pain of others". I hope you enjoyed the experience.
PS, I love you all. Even the "I told you so" bitches.12 -
Finally selling my gtx 1070 and going to swap to AMD, just wanting to know if anyone has heard anything about the RX 590 finally playing nice with linux?

lol nvidia-bug-report.sh
it collected an xorg log that is not the current one.

What a goddamn trainwreck. I'm not necessarily saying it's nvidia's fault. But it is a trainwreck.4 -
So I just installed Windows 10 and decided to download GeForce Experience and got this through Microsoft Edge.
I tried Opera, same result. My friend told me to zoom out with Opera and then suddenly it worked. WHY?!?!? Since when is a newly installed Windows with bad resolution a mobile device or something? Can you please explain?11 -
Argh! (I feel like I start a fair amount of my rants with a shout of fustration)
Tl;Dr How long do we need to wait for a new version of xorg!?
I've recently discovered that Nvidia driver 435.17 (for Linux of course) supports PRIME GPU offloading, which -for the unfamiliar- is where you're able render only specific things on a laptops discreet GPU (vs. all or nothing). This makes it significantly easier (and power efficient) to use the GPU in practice.
There used to be something called bumblebee (which was actually more power efficient), but it became so slow that one could actually get better performance out of Intel's integrated GPU than that of the Nvidia GPU.
This feature is also already included in the nouveau graphics driver, but (at least to my understanding) it doesn't have very good (or none) support for Turing GPUs, so here I am.
Now, being very excited for this feature, I wanted to use it. I have Arch, so I installed the nvidia-beta drivers, and compiled xorg-server from master, because there are certain commits that are necessary to make use of this feature.
But after following the Nvidia instructions, it doesn't work. Oops I realize, xrog probably didn't pick up the Nvidia card, let's restart xorg. and boom! Xorg doesn't boot, because obviously the modesetting driver isn't meant for the Nvidia card it's meant for the Intel one, but xorg is to stupid for that...
So here I am back to using optimus-manager and the ordinary versions of Nvidia and xorg because of some crap...
If you have some (good idea) of what to do to make it work, I'm welcome to hear it.6 -
Well, shit is kinda hitting the fan literally.
Two of my four clients are closing down, and it all happened in a month.
Not really fearing for job security, but now I've scheduled an interview with nVidia that I dismissed two years ago. Let's see how it goes.5 -

Nvidia has open-sourced PhysX under BSD-3
Caught me by surprise
Wonder if it's because they only care about RTX now? 🤔5 -
PSA: The smaller the compute shader workgroups the more efficient they are, down to the wave size (32 on nvidia). Not exactly sure why, but looks like if you don't need group shared memory always have your workgroups be wave sized
Just this alone gave me a 30%+ performance increase. And combined with a few other changes got me from 50 µs to 10 µs, yay!5 -
bought a cdp ups, because energy service can be shitty in the town I live.
Everything is fine and dandy with the ups, has a nice lcd but it also has a usb cable and dvd with a so called "upsilon 2000" software. One week after buying the ups I decided to venture with the mother fucker software.
Installed the software, looks awful, like a software that made his way from the 90s to this day... it doesn't show the ups... I left it like that... nothing unsual, then my fucking curiosity picked up and I look into the software options and here you go, changed the "communication type" from serial to usb, and ups was recognized, and even nicer, windows started showing a battery icon like if this desktop was a laptop. I was thrilled... until I restarted my pc for whatever reason
gpu decided to break, like if the drivers weren't installed, was laggy, my second screen didn't work, in device manager the video adapter was shown as "generic video adapter". 😡, immediately I blame nvidia cuz I just updated those drivers the day before.
So I started my journey to get the fucking video card working as it should again. installed DDU, reinstalled newest drivers again... didn't work, used ddu again, installed last known drivers again... didn't work, used ddu, installed drivers from windows update... nothing... after some panicking time, I remembered that besides from updating the nvidia drivers I installed that upsilon shit recently... So I decided to uninstall it, and that was the fix, fucking shady software.
It was very naive from me to not blame that upsilon before blaming everything else.3 -
It's fucking sad that when you buy a new laptop with good specs, good nvidia graphics, good sound and install Arch Linux because you hate fucking windows and arch way is the right way. But, then Linux fucks you because there is no proper nvidia support and you have to use wine which doesn't support new games and you run frequently into problems like audio (P.s. maybe in linux 4.10.11). You have to configure microphone everytime while using Skype and see some other guy having same laptop playing happily latest games without much burden.😣😣😥😥😔😔
When will Linux kernel be amazing for gaming??13 -
I have a dream that someone will write completely free linux driver for AMD videocards
and for Nvidia too
and fixes OpenGL7 -
The graphic cards supply is completely madness. Even after the crypto crash it is not possible to buy RTX cards at price any close to MSRP.
But today my jaw drop when I saw auction on popular online portal where some guy was selling a place in a queue in another store. The title was "Rights to buy RTX 3080" and for 400$ you could potentially buy a GPU for the price close to MSRP. I think this was too much and after a few hour the advert was took down.5 -
Ladies and gentlemen... It finally happened... I finally killed a Linux install!
Was stuck at 1024 x 768, installed NVIDIA drivers, crashed, restarted and ended up in an endless login screen loop and then boom, crash and is no longer recognised in Grub.
Don't know what I did seeing as the machine hasn't been on for 3 days ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Guess I'll have to do a reinstall when I have internet again!4 -
I made this bad decision to buy pretty pricey laptop with nVidia card. Lenovo Legion Y520.
So yeah, have you heard about optimus technology and how much one can hate nvidia?
> Debian is working, nice.
> Let's try nvidia-driver.
> 48hours later: WOoooooah glxgears at 120 fps!
> Installed some fonts. "Could not load gpu driver". HDMI port stops working. Unable to repair. Entering despair.
> Surviving on dual-booted windows.

The propietary video drivers for my system are broken. Depending on desktop environment it might even force me to enter GRUB rescue mode.
It hurts me to see how little companies care about their GNU/Linux users.4 -
Holy mother of butts. Two weeks. Two weeks I've been on and off trying to get hardware rendering to work in xorg on a laptop with an integrated nvidia hybrid gpu.
I know the workarounds and it's what I've been using otherwise. Nouveau without power management or forced software rendering works fine. I also know it's a known issue, this is just me going "but what the hell, it HAS to be possible".
The kicker is that using nvidias official tools will immediately break it and overwrite your xorg.conf with an invalid configuration.
I've never bought an nvidia gpu but all my work laptops have had them. Every time i set one up I can't resist giving this another shot, but I always hit a brick wall where everything is set up right but launching X produces a black screen where I can't even launch a new tty or kill the current one. I assume it's the power management tripping over itself.
The first time I tried getting this to work was about 3 or 4 years ago on a different laptop and distro. It's not a stretch to say that it would be better if nvidia just took down their drivers for now to save everyone's time.5 -
Wow.. We're so screwed... But why don't faces in videogames look realistic still...

Holy fuck AMD really have made a comeback... NVIDIA is admitting they lost (how I interpret this, no flame) and then we have Intel literally running their already fragmented CPU range into a ditch of mismatched specs and just brute forcing higher cord counts on an almost out of date manufacturing process...
And now AMD is also releasing new mobile chipsets with integrated Vega graphics (on the zen based chips) that are already outperforming the closest Intel competitor on thermal and raw performance...
What the fuck!!!
AMD might actually become Intel and NVIDIA rolled into one the way they are going in my eyes...12 -

GPU : AMD or Nvidia ?

Installing the nvidia drivers on my linux machine is the bigges nightmare I've come across sofar. As soon as I have installed it and reboot, blackscreen and literally no way around it. Starting the desktop, nah stuck in a crashloop. Installing different driver, same issue. Using diffrent distro, that shit wont even boot properly. Uninstalling the driver seems to fix it but whats the point of running only on third gen i5 graphics. Shit cant even handle 1080p yt properly. And there are ppl saying if it aint broke dont fix it. FFS I DESPISE MAKING COMPROMISES WHEN I FUCKING KNOW IT CAN WORK BUT ATM IT IS NOT IN THE FREAKING MOOD TO DO SO!4

Nvidia. Why the fucking hell do I need to sign in to my Nvidia account to install drivers? I fucking hate your proprietary bullshit agenda!8

Fucking nvidia and its fucking proprietary linux drivers. Of course I had to attempt an update, because the game was freezing, and of course it ruined my Friday evening. Because the newest kernel apparently cannot even boot (with any version of the proprietary drivers).7

I kinda missed the continuous struggle around the r8169 driver and Nvidia drivers. Thank god the Arch ISO has this problem too.
These two companies should be fined out of existence, there's no reason not to open source the driver, and this renders the product useless.4 -

Robbery of nearby future :
A broke dev decided to do a robbery by stealing the whole DAVE -2 system from the Tesla S3 model
While asking why he chose a drastic path as this, he said "My client wanted the training to be ready within 2 days and I couldn't arrange that much GPU in such small notice, so decided to do what I did.*ignored(But I reinstalled it back in the car)*
As you can see, client's have turned into money hungry, cock sucking, fist fucking, and God-knows-what-fetish wanting prices of shit"
Over to you, Clara3 -
I fucking hate whenever vscode or nvidia force you to update, by just breaking everything they can, e.g. vscode stops syntax highlighting or intellisense and nvidia randomly breaks DX11, after you update though - everything is just fine again2
-
So I got my compute shader rasterizer working pretty well now which is great. I now also have a fallback to hardware rasterization for triangles which are a bit sussy (mostly just too large) and getting that implemented without tanking performance (gazillion threads hitting the same atomic variable at the same time) involved some tricky workgroup/subgroup hackery but I'm happy with it
Only problem... I have like 90%+ SM occupancy (which is great) but I also have 90%+ SM occupancy which means the nvidia drivers think I'm mining cryptocurrency and start bottlenecking my compute performance at random. It slowly goes up to 3x, then it slowly goes down again, then it slowly goes up again... argh
Thanks, miners 😐8 -
Gamers Nexus has a really unique benchmark for the new AMD GPUs where AMD actually manages to pull ahead of Nvidia:13

Why yes Nvidia drivers, I did want you to bluescreen my thinkpad on its dock while I'm in the middle of two different deadlines! And bluescreen! This shit happens at least twice a week.

Installed on my 2x 980 TI SLI the newest Nvidia Driver 384.76.
Played games on it and some Video Editing. Noticed that I have bad laggs and checked clocks.
Wow clocks were locked at half the max Output. Checked if I can do anything to increase it, nope it's locked at half the Performance.
Tried to install previous Driver, install failed. Went 2 Drivers back and installed the 382.33.
Everything worked again.
WTF are the guys at NVIDIA coding while being drunk?? How the fuck can you lock the powertarget of the GPU at half the Performance and after 4 days not releasing a hotfix? Are they testing this shit even or forcing it into production?
Currently NVIDIA has really crappy drivers and with every update it gets even worse.
And the only option you got is GPU's from NVIDIA and AMD. And Vega is not even released yet.
Hope that AMD will beat the shit out of NVIDIA...5 -

Disassembled pc due to some ram memory problems and pc not starting after freeze.
Looks like sometimes plug out and plug in various components on your motherboard fix pc lol. Destroyed PC casing that collapsed due to me sitting on it.
All of this to just find out tensorflow error and all crashes are from graphics card overheating after keeping it for some time at 82 celsius.
Added time.sleep to python code and looks like it's working, keeping temperature below 65 celsius.
Still ~100 times faster than cpu training so I can live with that.3 -
Looks like unzipping on disk drive where you keep your dataset can crash machine learning training session.
Thanks nvidia for your great drivers.
I like your solutions. -
First Nvidia drivers problem on Linux in 5 years. Due to multiarch (32bit executable, 64bit drivers). Had to happen in a rush.1

Fuck you, Nvidia! Can't even watch a film in the fullscreen mode without image flicks. Why should I ever care about this bare shit in 2016? It's your task to support your crappy proprietary driver. Nouveau is even worse.5

1. Make it so IT teams are only directly managed by people who know their shit about IT
2. Make nvidia opensourxe their linux driver, so we can have some real improvements
3. Make me able to rm -fr people and tasks from the command line.3 -

Kudos to Fedora for the 32 workstation release. It works as advertised on Lenovo laptops (even the new ones) OOTB, no issues.
Caveats: It's Wayland with Nvidia graphics disabled and has no fingerprint support, but that goes with the territory. Still an arch adherent personally, but it makes the office engineer laptop story significantly easier. -
I am using Dell Insipiron 7567.
I have dual booted my rig with Ubuntu 18.04 and Windows 10.
Right from the start itself I couldn't get to the screen of trying or installing with default settings. I had to use 'nomodeset' with 'quiet splash'.
Even after installing I had problems. After some hours of searching I found out that installing Nvidia 390 driver would remove the bug. It did. But my rig heats like shit. And throttles very much. Where as I am not using anything other than
1.chrome
2.vscode
3.terminal
Which i think is very normal?
And looor of battery drain.
I used to get around 3-5 hrs of battery life in Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 but now its like max 2 hrs.
Which is bad I guess.
I switched back to "X.Org X server" driver with "nomodeset" (without nomoseset it will load upto login page. Once i hit enter it gets stuck) it boots up but can't change the level of brighness or can't do anything related to display setting. Temperature has reduced but sacrificing on display settings.
Is there any way to remove this bug?
And additional infos

Is there a Linux distribution without a lot of problems with Nvidia drivers? I'm currently using elementary os, because I like the look of it, but I'm getting a lot of graphical glitches and black screens all the time and I was wondering if changing to another distro would help. Is elementary is known for graphical glitches, or is it just the Nvidia drivers? I've also turned my display manager into a mess while trying to customise my login screen, so it might be a good time to change to another distribution. Any recommendations? And one more thing, just out of curiosity, can you install multiple distributions and use the same home directory if home is mounted on a separate partition?15

Been spending the past two days setting up linux on my new work laptop which happens to have a hybrid nvidia GPU, in addition to requiring a usermade driver to get the docking station working. Both the (proprietary!) nvidia driver and displaylink driver demanded to rebuild the kernel, and the nvidia ones crashed during it.
I had no idea it could be this much of a hassle. Had I bought it myself I would have taken it back. Never buying a laptop with a discrete GPU ever again. Sweet butts. -

What laptop should I buy to run Linux?
My experience on my desktop with Nvidia is just horrible, so I'm considering to buy a laptop with the new AMD Ryzen when I go to university next year. I'm a little bit unsure about the compatibility with Linux though. Should I go for AMD, or buy a laptop with Nvidia graphics and pray everything works fine?
Do you have any suggestions? I would like to be able to do some light gaming, but I don't want it to be to heavy and I don't want to spend to much money either (around €800).
Do you have any good or bad experiences with running Linux on a laptop?
Are there things I should be aware of?33 -
Hey everyone, need some help/opinions, I quite literally have almost no time anymore for alot of thing specially try share alot of news here (not the Intel mess, I reported some of that stuff before it exploded) I share most of that news in my site though, but I really wanted to ask people here that may work for hostings companies if they know about the retardation of Nvidia in their change of Terms of Services for their GPU usage (https://legionfront.me/posts/1936 ) and also want to know if users here are if they are looking for dedicated servers, mainly GPU servers for their works and what are you look for (specs and such) or rather where

The distro seems pretty cool, but i doubt I'll get everything to work, since fedora doesn't offer premade packages for proprietary drivers.3 -
What a pain it is getting Linux/Arch setup perfectly on a MacBook Pro. Overheating like a mofo. ACPI shitstorm, integrated GPU disabled by default and need a hack to enable it outside of macos, fan control is wack.
Solved most of this crap but still can't completely disable the Nvidia GPU, so both integrated and dedicated are powered on. Frustrated AF.2 -
Up until now, I never had any breaking updates on Linux on my laptop, Except for Nvidia drivers stopping. It would switch to noveau. Even my cobbled together hack of Broadcom Bluetooth solution worked without even having to touch it. Well, I still don't have problems with core Linux but add gnome to the issue mix today. Surprisingly, Nvidia drivers for the first time Nvidia drivers upgraded (to 340) and I didn't had to do anything for it to work. Gnome deprecated synaptics driver support and now uses libinput implementation for it. Well Ubuntu Gnome updater won't clean the configuration and I had to remove the driver and clean config myself. Nothing too much, i have to deal with these stuff on my arch installation but Ubuntu has been "it works fine. No need to interfere" thing for me. It works fine on Wayland (it always used libinput on Wayland a if I am correct) but nvidia drivers doesn't support Wayland. And then since the update gnome has been disabling some of my extensions at random. All on X. I have no problems with Wayland except for Nvidia fucking drivers. All that said, its still better than windows where I lost fucking network connectivity during something important. And the trackpad drivers on Linux are somehow much better than anything I have used on windows. (that or Sony made fucking great trackpads and nobody noticed). Here's to hoping Nvidia starts supporting drawing on Wayland and I can ditch X completely. I have seen visible improvements in performance under load and slight decrease in battery usage with Wayland.8

Spending six hours installing Antergos and reinstalling Antergos because I can not log into my laptop when I install i3 nor when I install GNOME...
Turns out the drivers for NVIDIA got installed (I checked it without thinking about it) everytime and that was the culprit...
Lesson learned: install everything by yourself, that way you know what you have on your laptop, and makes it much easier to troubleshoot..1 -
Can I say Ubuntu installation has really gone messy lately(at least the last time when I installed back in 2009). Especially the part of disk partition and selection. You get only three options - Install alongside Windows(without additional customisation), Install on the whole disk, and then Custom.
Most times these days people will select Custom and configure the partitions. And then the crucial part is selection of Boot Loader. But it's not given much focus which is empirical because otherwise even if your installation is successful, without the correct Bootloader config, you will continue to boot into Windows and then debugging and fixing gets really tricky. Especially for somebody who wants to try it out.
And then you will be cursing yourself to have bought a laptop with Nvidia graphics card because the drivers are proprietary and sometimes they have you stuck in Blank Screens prior to login. Ubuntu is not at fault here, but then it makes the life of people trying out things so much more difficult that will force people to just give it up.
I had moved to CentOS(because of Gnome) back in 2015 after really squeezing everything out of Ubuntu 9.04 on my Intel Core 2 Quad. And today, I installed Ubuntu 20.04 after almost 11+ years and it was really not a good experience.6 -
Anyone here knows a good guide on how to get the nvidia web drivers working on hackintosh high sierra, its driving me crazy!

1. 72 hours at an heavy used street with many holes and open windows (not the os) on an hot day for those, who stop the people, who work against air pollution;
2. die nvidia;

That should cover everything i need.1 -
Can anyone recommend a good OSS NVIDIA driver?
Was using nouveau but didn't realise how out of date it was, currently using the proprietary NVIDIA driver and it's really causing some havoc17 -
Finally did it!
Replaced my desktop pc (which I use for gaming) which had Windows 7 with Arch Linux! It was not hard because I already use it on my laptop.
OK it was a bit struggle with nvidia and cinnamon due to missing libraries I had to install which I don't know before.
But it is possible to play games on Arch?
Yes definitely!
CS:GO - works (native, steam)
League of Legends - works (wine)
World of Tanks - works (wine)
All I need is working (:1 -
Sometimes NVIDIA fucks up big time.
Last time I was a writing a UI application in Java. I took some break and updated the NVIDIA drivers so that you know it will 'increase' gaming performance. Next day I was trying to launch the app and the UI doesn't show up. It took me over half an hour to realise that there was no fault in my code and it was the fucking update. -
Hi,
I want to install linux besides windows on my new computer (i7-8700k, gtx 1080). I use debian with i3 on my laptop for work and want to have a similar development environment at home. Does anyone have an adive to choose between ElementaryOS and Arch, or just stick with Debian. i3-gaps will be the wm, I just can't use another one ;)
Does one distro has better support for Nvidia cards in fact I would like to try CUDA.
I do not have other requirements; mostly webdev with python in the backend, and a little c++ game with SDL. This should not be a problem in a new distro.
Thanks for some advices and pro/cons11 -
Just updated my system to the new Plasma 5.21.
Of course, there was some shitty nvidia error again, but this time I actually found a solution, so everything went perfectly. And I am almost speechless.
The smoothness of the animations, scrolling in Firefox and everything in the system is overwhelming. It is running perfectly. The latency fixes really helped a lot and even with triple buffering enabled, you can't feel any input lag.
But yes, there is a but. Why are my taskbar icons so fucking big?? Like what the fuck happened there...5 -

I've seen posts about Manjaro quite a lot recently. Just wondering:
How many of us are using Manjaro as daily usage system. And why not other?
For me it is because it connects ease of use of Ubuntu (or even Win) with possibilities of Arch. And I always liked KDE. Plus it works out of the box, with Nvidia drivers ready and stuff.question operating system os manjaro kde 😍 distro kde ubuntu linux manjaro system kde plasma linuxxx2 -

I have Dell latitude 3379 with on-board graphic card
Do you think it's enough for training ANN and doing a small ML project or I must improve it to laptop with Nvidia graphic card?6 -
I understand the desire people have to use an open source driver for their graphics card, but it feels like that's not the only reason people seem averse to using nvidia's closed-source driver on linux. I have used it for years, and never had a problem, and though I have an admittedly specific use scope, I would like to know what it is that people dislike about it. What problems do you have with it?3
-
Why does it have to be so incredibly hard to get an nvidia card to work under Linux? The driver is in available, we have the technology but every time I try to get this damned thing to work I end up in front of a fucked XServer and this stupid "Something went wrong" gdm screen only to apt-purge nvidia from my drive and start from the beginning once more.5
-
Nvidia's drivers for Linux are absolute dog shit. Like how difficult is it to make something functional? I only have 2 monitors connected but the second one is causing the driver to crash, wtf.8
-
Finally, installed nvidia drivers on arch linux and I can watch videos without screen tearing.
It took me 8 months to figure out to download the main driver from their site instead of using the commands mentioned in arch wiki.15 -

I watched a few reviews for the new nvidia RTX 4070 Ti graphics card. One question on my mind is: why is it so huge?
⏺️4090 is huge -> ok I get it, 450W power is a lot of W
⏺️4080 is huge -> ok I guess, 320 W of power is a still a lot of W; although it should be considerably smaller than 4090 (but it is not? why)
⏺️4070 Ti is huge -> 3 slots size for this graphics card? What the actual hell? This card is rated just 285 W. It makes no sense
I do not get it. The only explanation I can find is that the manufacturer got so lazy they cannot be bothered to design 3 different cooling systems, so they reuse the same cooling system on all graphics cards. RIP4 -
Both laptops have the same price.

I read that installing Nvidia drivers on Linux is usually a bad idea because they break if your OS updates. Is that still a thing? I still have a GTS 250 so would like to squeeze what little performance I can out of it.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y700 (and possibly (m)any other NVidia GPU laptops)
framerate fluctuations in any game - runs silky smooth for few minutes, then drops to borderline unplayable framerates for a few minutes.
Thousands of people across dozens, maybe hundreds of internet forums having this problem for years, since the thing was released.
I personally lost at least 20 hours trying to solve it, and had the laptop in gaming-unusable state because of it for the past half a year.
...yesterday I FOUND A SOLUTION!
1. Download NVidia Inspector by Orbmu2k
(some hobbyist hacker type)
2. use its "profile inspector" to flip an internal setting in nvidia driver.
3. flip "Enable application for Optimus" to SHIM_RENDERING_MODE_ENABLE to basically tell the "Optimus" crap to fuck off.
(not sure why the value is called this, because it's clearly disabling the thing)
4. the thing works flawlessly silky smooth again.
...thousands of people across dozens, maybe hundreds of forums...
...i could be their Lord and Savior...
...if only I weren't too lazy to hike across all of them and register just to post the solution.
(tech forums really should have some "I HAVE A SOLUTION but if i have to register I won't bother")
also...

There was a time where Nvidia drivers took few minutes to install. Looks like I missed that time, eh?
Have been waiting here for at least 30 minutes and it is still "Preparing to install". Thanks Nvidia. -
When you go to "Oh they do it cheap", don't expect results...
Changed my PC build around 2 years ago.
Went from Core i7 / Nvidia to Ryzen 9 / AMD
Welp, AMD is totaly unstable.
I've invested 5k $ so I'm gonna ride it, but NEVER, EVER EVER again I'm buying AMD CPU or GPU.
Shit is unstable as fuck. I have latency issues, CPU issues, Video issues almost every week.
With Intel/nVidia cvombo I had before, I had issues maybe once every 3-4 months.
So yeah, buy low cost AMD, you pay the price later in usability. Fuck them.21 -
Just installed Nvidia drivers on my KDE Neon (Ubuntu) and now only one monitor work on my dual monitor setup.
What do?7 -
So one of my first rants was about me unable to setup Debian with (lightdm) Cinnamon to be working with optimus laptop and to make the damn hdmi port work, where the port is attached to the nvidia gpu (vga passthrough?)
I have to try it with another distro because the dual-booted Windows greatly feeds my procrastination. (Like ... Factorio, Stellaris, Rimworld and etc. type of procrastination, it's getting somewhat severe. )
So what would you people of devrant recommend me to try? I am thinking a lot about Arch but I am afraid there will be a lot more problems with the lenovo drivers for various things.
The next one is classical Ubuntu, at the end this distro looks like it's at least trying to work amongst other distro's.
Also thought about Fedora because yum and RedHat. ( ..lol )
Thx ppl.2 -

Soo, after reading a post about Fedora Workstation I figured, why not try it out. It has some awesome productivity tools!
I donwloaded the ISO, made a bootable USB stick and started my PC into Fedora live.
At first it looked awesome! I really looked forward to working with it. I installed it and restarted my PC. It booted up I choose Fedora and I saw a login prompt.
Everything's fine until now. I logged in, no problem. But after that the screen just turned black and only my mouse was visible. I thought, maybe it's because it's loading something.
I waited a couple of minutes but then i got really frustrated because nothing, literally nothing happened. So I forced a shutdown and restarted. I logged in again.. and... Well at least the screen wasn't black anymore. But it was not good either. Artifacts everywhere. I could not read what the screen said.
So I reinstalled it and couple of times, black screen after artifact screen.
I don't really know who's to blame here. Nvidia or Linux/Fedora or something else (I highly think it's Nvidia tho, fuck Nvidia and their anti Linux mood ).
I will try Fedora on a laptop somewhere in the Future again but for now I've had enough of that shit combined with the aftermath of resetting everything back to normal (removing grub etc).
If anyone has some advice concerning the Nvidia problem I'd highly appreciate that.
It's a GeForce 650ti1 -

It's funny that I still somehow think that windows can do anything but crash itself at this point, so I'm playing an fps, and get an error message that complains about driver failure, so I go to device manager and try to update nvidia drivers, windows as always says that my driver is the newest available, so I check the nvidia website, newest version released literally last Tuesday so I think to check device manager again, date of nvidia newest driver: 05/03/2019, date of windows' "newest" driver's install: 13/08/2018... glad to know that windows keeps my computer up to date.

In the near future i'd like to switch to Linux on my primary laptop (HP EliteBook 8570w) - my uni requires it for the 2nd semester.
I've been thinking about Manjaro, or something else based on Arch Linux... The problem is - I've heard about how problematic is the installation of nVidia Graphics drivers. In my laptop I have the basic Intel HD Graphics with the 2nd Gen Intel Core i7, and an nVidia Quadro K2000 card.
My question is: will I it be really problematic?1
