My brother and I have been messing with our IBM 5150 and doing cool stuff with it. I got it to play a youtube video via telnet via my bro's mac via mplayer with libcaca (ascii video output) + youtube-dl (a youtube downloader. The mac is doing all the heavy lifting, but it is still cool to see these images on a IBM 5150, just by typing a few commands on that old keyboard... more fun projects to come with this old thing.

Last night I had a virtual machine up on my Mac running Arch Linux. I had 6 of my 8 gigs of ram allocated to the VM. Well I left it open last night when I went to bed and forgot about it this morning. My wife just called me at work to say something is wrong with the Mac. "Everything is running slowly and it looks different." I had to walk her through the process to shut it down, but she got to run her first Linux command: sudo shutdown now.
She is now calling herself a hacker...6 -

I used to think the magnetic power cord on the mac was a great idea...until we got a kitten. One of his greatest joys is to play havoc with the cords under the computer desk...but his favourite is the mac powercord - which he rips out without me noticing ... until the mac runs out of power and shuts down...

Once I quit this job, I'm never getting a Mac again. I know many like working on one but for me it just gets in my way, it's naggy, the window manager is clunky, homebrew is a crappy package manager compared to pacman and good do I miss focus follow mouse. This is the third time that I've used macos for insert a year and it has actually gotten less pleasant over time.8

My new team more or less forced me to change from a Windows machine to a Mac (Mac book pro, I think?) due to "compatibility issues", so I thought I might as well see what all the Mac fuzz is about. Here is a list of my observations so far:
- If you try powering on the mac book with more than one DisplayPort cable plugged in, the screen will go black until you plug all DP cables out
- If you unplug your DisplayPort cables to go to a meeting you can expect one of the monitors getting frozen on the blurry login screen (without any login prompt) when you get back (while the main monitor shows your desktop without the taskbar)
- If you get out of range from your wireless peripherals (keyboard in this case) while going to a meeting your keyboard layouts are most likely deleted and reset to U.S qwerty when you get back to your desk
- When pressing quit on any application you can't expect in to close and clear up memory, it will remain in the background until you force kill it.
- There is a 50/50 chance that your Mac book never wakes up from sleep
Best thing is that I found out today that the software we use is completely compatible with any RedHat/Solaris distro.

Update on my previous rant -
Mac restart after upgrade got stuck due to a fucking corrupted kext file, had to switch between recovery and safe/verbose mode to isolate that bastard, move him out of the folder and then do a clean restart.. Then, after 7 hours, it said 15 minutes remaining to complete installation...
Finally, it came up fine, doing healthy :)
Dear Mac, You, Sir, gave me a scare during a restart and are becoming like Windows (note: bsod) :(

My employer uses latest and greatest macbooks. It's fuking awesome. I wasn't a fan until I found the ease of android and iOS development on it. I even started using Atom for web development. And I bought a Mac mini for a dedicated jenkins server. I don't think I'll ever go back to windows. There's just no point. I know it's expensive but it gets the job done. No more fukin mac VMs on VMware. Fuk that shit.20

Context: I (among other things) manage some servers for my students' club so I have first-hand information about anything network or server-related that happens. We basically run a big enterprise network and we allow devices to connect if a person has paid their membership and the device's MAC address (be it wireless or ethernet) is recognized by our switches/aruba controllers.
Story: So today a first complaint about "the wifi not working" came in because of Android 10 and its MAC randomization. We deal with MAC randomization on Windows laptops and PCs but I think it is disabled by default so we almost never get this type of complaint.
It took one of the other guys probably 5 minutes to figure out how to disable it... only to discover it is a per-network setting.
The actual question: If there are any network administrators here on devRant - how do you deal with this MAC filtering vs MAC randomization issue?7 -
Have you noticed that mac users rarely use full screen mode? Its so hard to use that they just leave half sized windows, its so annoying when I have to ask every time if they can make it bigger17

Add this to the list of bad design choices of Mac OS and Apple laptops:
When you connect thr charging cable, the laptop makes a sound from the speakers, even if you have Headphones plugged in... Why?...

Well, I just wasted £250. I needed a Mac to build iOS apps so I got the newest Mac Mini with lowest specs (I’m still a student). I thought that 4GB would be enough as my laptop runs fine with 4 but NOPE.
ITS SUPER SLOW, XCode takes >10 minutes to even launch and RAM is always at max, I even had to get the Mac Mini without upgradable ram.
I worked all summer just to get a Mac which is sluggish, :/.7 -

Why people think that Mac is better than pc? Im Mac user and I like Mac. I think Apple just uses better hardware and charges extra for it. If you build windows with better hardware then windows will work really fast too. On Mac gradle build takes really less time because of SSD it does not mean Mac is faster. Get SSD for windows and see the difference yourself.

I have a Mac at work right now, and if/when it putters out, I would be fine with another, but not if it's the touch bar variety. In that case, I'll ask for a surface or a latitude(the options the company offers to the MacBook) and just hijack Linux onto it. I won't even ask if I can, because I'm sure the answer will be no.7

hey guys yesterday I got roasted cuz I was using a pc instead of Mac for development work and this was my reply. For me I don't gonna spend 2000+ $ only for 1 sec faster app loading and only for writing codes if someone willing to spend lot of money then they have completely command on there system Mac is very overpriced and overprotective it doest allow dual boot tell u what Mac sucks in 4k video editing,games,it don't even support maya or 3ds max rendering on Mac is gonna hit you hard , and there is same for linux but because it's free I don't much care about it but it is extremely crash and error prone I've installed Ubuntu nearly 20+ computer and after few days some kind of internal error occurred if u cancelled any ongoing installation it's going to hijack your system not let order program to install unless you manually clean that shit out ,yea Unix systems have bit faster app opening time and I appreciate that .
For nerds like me it's not only about coding stuff I like to do crazy stuffs17 -
So today a drawer above my desk fell, but sadly my MacBook Air was under it, now I had a cushion based cover and a hard shell case for my Mac. However the edges of drawer penetrated the cover and case leaving a dent on the back. Which somehow means I don’t get the display but everything else is working (ie keys and sound).
Now I have to push an important bug fix and screen replacement will take at least 10-12 days.

I spent 2 hours googling and scratching my head trying to implement asyc Tast<ActionResult> on asp.net MVC. I even copy and paste the exact sample code and still didn't work. It turns out that "Visual studio for Mac" doesn't support asynchronous calls.

We have a bunch of legacy applications that runs on Windows only. I'm pretty much the only dev here who doesn't use a Windows machine.
In order to run those applications, I need use remote desktop to a Windows VM.
I use a Mac. And I use a lot of keyboard shortcuts. Case in point, CMD + L to go to the address bar in the browser.
This happens every time when I need to access those applications.
me: *remote desktop to the VM
me: "oh I need to get to the index/landing page"
me: *CMD + L
VM: "I'm locked now"8 -
I miss working on Linux. It’s so bare and I get to tinker with a lot stuffs. I like working with Mac though, less problems and more productivity; but it’s just tiny bit bloated.
I think the perfect balance is having two machines; one Mac and the other Dell XP 15 loaded with Ubuntu.1 -
Docker for Mac loves burning my CPU. Even if I delete all images and containers and do a fresh reinstall and JUST have Docker for Mac running, I always see crazy CPU usage on my Late 2016 15" Macbook Pro.

Take a computer, any computer. Remove all the useful shit that makes the operating system actually work and rewrite all the prompts in simple English. Just for fun, give it the complete inability to perform everyday tasks that a child could use an Etch-a-Sketch for. Put all the useful settings/options in the background and make updates look like they're going to install up until the last minute until they error with "Unknown" as the only reason. Now interface it with your cobbled-together backend system and REQUIRE it to communicate with that system for EVERY task.
Then paint it silver.
There. Now you have a Mac.

My Mac restart after update took more than an hour (check my previous rant), went into not responding mode, then got aborted, ultimately ending up with a corrupted disc. Now, not booting up at all...

Yesterday I blocked my kids’ access to the internet .. and just blocked the IP4 access of my mac. What a genius. It appears github (and not other sites) requires IP4 whereas most now use IP6. -

By all means provide the functionality as opt-in via a CSS declaration or whatever, but don't just assume your love of bloody "smart quotes" trumps everyone else's ability to see the *actual content* on the site.

I mean I use Ubuntu in my daily life but let's accept that most of the Linux distros (for desktop of course) has hickups. I begin to panic because most of the top toolbar icons were not visible. I figured it was bugged.

I'm a mac AND a PC! Are you? I actually quite like both of them.
My dev setup has both operating systems, with a shared mouse and keyboard (using Synergy) -> and I love it! It feels like I get the ability to do anything. There are some apps I prefer on the WIndows side and others that are fine on the mac. I use git and dropbox to share dev files between the two seamlessly.
I come from a Linux background, so I like that I can use bash on the mac, although on the PC I use Powershell mostly. I also have used the Ubuntu linux subsystem on the PC very effectively.
I was originally forced into the situation due to iPhone mobile development - now I don't mind at all!
On the mobile side I happily switch between iOS and Android all the time.

So, was testing a classic Mac an old friend sent over and realized an interesting convergence had occurred in my office.
In the attached shot you can see the following:
Center: A Macintosh LC III - effectively the last of the 68k Mac line
Right: A PowerMac G5 - one of the old cheese graters, and the last major release of the PowerPC line
Left, under the monitor: A 2020 Mac Mini - effectively the end of the Intel Mac line
The LC III gives a startup chime, but I wasn't able to get a video signal out of it using the Apple-to-VGA adapter I was using. Otherwise I'd be posting a shot with all 3 up and running.

Am I the only one that can't stand non-maximized windows on Windows but hate maximized windows on Mac?
Could this be a psychological phenomenon in which the designs of these systems make you use them in a specific way? Or am I just retarded?

I’m so frustrated and I don’t know whether to blame my 2015 Mac, Audacity, both, or my present inability to be able to afford a new Mac because EVERYTHING/EVERYONE IN MY HOUSE IS BREAKING, NEEDS THERAPY OR BRACES, AND LIFE IS NOTHING BUT EXPENSES!
I had just finished tediously transferring, restoring, and trying to export tracks from some old cassette I had of a jazz concert I played in years ago. Audacity froze because my Mac is now apparently underpowered at 8GB of RAM. But Audacity autosaves and on restart usually can restore you back to where you left off. So I tried to force quit it.
I couldn’t even force quit the stupid app and had to totally restart. I think that ruined whatever autosave I had because it could only restore half of the work I’d done. Another freeze finished off the Audacity project, making it TOTALLY BLANK AND WORTHLESS. I just deleted the whole damned thing and will have to start over. I WAS MINUTES AWAY FROM BEING DONE AFTER HOURS OF WORK!!!!!
Now the Mac wants to update to a supplemental release. With each release this expensive boat anchor gets slower and slower.
I just wanna throw all tech out the window. Every damned thing is planned obsolescence in 2 years and made in China anymore and I HATE giving that totalitarian regime any more of my money. Apple is complicit. ALL computer companies are. They could just bring the jobs back here and walk the walk, but they’re all talk.3 -
Old boss: Can you tell me why we need to purchase Mac?
Me: Because we are all using Mac in HK and UK offices and we can share the company license
Old boss: Why can't we just purchase the software license in Windows?
Me: Because it is expensive, and the total cost will be much more than purchasing the Mac alone
Old boss: I still don't understand why we need to purchase Mac.
Me: Ok. (Walked away with approval form. Finally got the approval from UK office)

My father in law uses a mac. He once asked me to fix something there for him. So I turned it on and I thought my eyes where bleeding. He had the contrast on the highest level. It was so bad you couldn't even recognize the buttons on the screen. So I changed the contrast to a degree that I could recognize something except for white on the screen. After fixing his problem I asked him why his contrast was set so high. He said that the colors on the screen were only right when the contrast is set high and that I should change it back.3

Got a mac to use for work, and to be honest, I never thought that I would say this... I kind of like it.. The gripe I have with mac's is that it's not user upgradable having the ssd and ram soldered on. If this weren't the case I would probably buy one myself6

So I decided to download OS X iso from a third party website as I don't have a mac. After downloading I couldn't extract the iso file as it showed the zip file was corrupted.
From the comment I found out that the zip file can be only extracted in a mac :/

I cannot install Mac OS-X Sierra on my top-of-the-line desktop MacPro because Apple has decided they want me to buy a new one, therefore I cannot install iTunes 12.5, therefore I cannot sync my iPhone 6s or iPad Air 2 to my music, backups or apps. $&@# you too, Apple! 😡5 -

1. Windows is unreliable and crappy.(I have had a lot of bad experience with windows.)
2. Mac is good but doesn't have a lot of things to tinker with.(Used mac, it runs on specific hardware only, for rich people who don't know how to use computers or for chad programmers )
3. Linux is the best. (The real programmer shit that has it all.)

I must be the DUMBEST person on the planet to constantly have problems with being able to drag one Mac directory in Finder to another one without taking everything OUTSIDE of that directory also and dumping it where I don’t want it. Or the file or folder ending up somewhere else than my intended destination. This time I wanted ONE folder from my downloads to go into ONE other folder in my home. Instead, it took EVERYTHING in downloads and dumped it into the target folder. It was impossible to sort out what didn’t belong so I had to delete everything and now all my downloads stuff (some of which I was still using) is gone.6

Hey Linux users!
I have successfully convinced a friend to change from MacOS to a Linux based system (because she needs new hardware).
Now I am asking myself which distribution would be most qualified for her. She is a relatively old lady and only knows Mac (no Windows or Linux knowledge), so it should be easier for her if the new system would look similar to the Mac environment she knows. (Using console is no problem.)
Another point is compatibility: She needs some (commercial) software (like GitKraken and design stuff), so it would be cool if the Linux versions of them would work on the distro (for one or two programmes Wine is needed).
After my own reasearch I came up with Elementary OS or Gmac.
Because I have no experience with Mac I want to ask you: Has anyone here some experiences with these two systems and/or with a change from Mac to Linux and could recommand a distribution or desktop environment?

I’ve been arguing with my friend about this for some time. He loves mac and says a lot of people in SV use macs. But mac is a TERRIBLE os and it’s soooo annoying. Sure some of you might disagree, but is it true that most ppl in SV use macs? I was surprised to hear that they didn’t choose linux over mac.19

One of my favourites is sosumi.
When Apple Computers started up they were sent a "cease and desist" notice by Apple Music (The Beatles).
They reached a settlement that Apple Computers would never publish music and Apple Music would never sell computers.
So when the Mac came out and played a tune on startup, the filename was sosumi.
Wikipedia now appears to dispute this, saying that sosumi wasn't the startup sound, but some other sound - any Mac experts care to comment?1 -

I once had to install a Mac OS VM for a school project. I tried customizing one simple thing in the boot options and I was meet with a green screen with an apple support phone number, no debug options. FML. We ended up begging the TA to do Android app instead, and we did :)

Two days ago I switched to an Ubuntu Machine and I couldn't get it to work.
As it turns out Ubuntu was not able to solve the DNS Name into an IP Address.

I need to study "Automator" is an exclusive Mac OS application, I've never had a Mac device and I'm having serious problems to start a virtual machine with Mac OS X 10.9 - Yosemite.dmg (I used a program to transform the file in .iso after this the file is not bootable anymore) Reading on other pages, they tell me that starting a Mac on virtualbox is not an immediate thing. can someone help me?6

I found that when I worked on a Mac I only had one screen and worked quit productively. I didn't feel or miss only having one screen.
But when I'm using Windows, I struggle to work with less than two screens, in fact I could do with six! 😂
Is it just me or has anyone else experienced the same?

tl:dr is that compiling and packing shit for windows & linux is usually straightforward. For mac it is a pain in the ass and contributed less than 1% percent to sales.
And the thing is, i absolutely resonate with that, because i had to go through that hell before at some point in life.

I recently started playing around with Alfred for Mac. I made a pretty neat workflow that allows you to query a YouTrack server from Alfred with YouTrack Query Language autocomplete.
Although I'm not sure if Alfred's export feature bundled the Python dependencies properly lol can someone try it and let me know if it works?

Anyone playing Star Trek Online via Wine, PlayOnMac, CrossOver, or WineBottler? They yanked the official Mac installer in February and I refuse to allocate space for bootcamp or my Macbook Pro or a dual boot on my hackintosh. I got it working momentarily on crossover but something went wrong.

Deleted a cloned directory for a project which I had made several bug fixes and updates on. I just noticed I couldn’t find the updated files folder when I want to clone for a new project. Sadly this means I must have deleted the directory thinking it was a duplicate of the initial project.
I have no backup and for some dumb reason I forgot to create a repo for the newly cloned directory. I have cleared my recycle bin multiple times prior to now.
I use mac and I need help! -

Have to do work on a trashcan of a Mac, and instead of connecting my keyboard, mouse, and monitor to the trashcan I have both my monitors and keyboard+mouse connected to my laptop. Using VNC to remote into the trashcan, allowing me to use everything without actually switching devices.
I have already gotten used to using the WIN key mapped to the CMD key on mac, but fucking VNC has ALT mapped to the CMD key.

Where is the mac vs ubuntu vs windows war for developers? I am a Windows user (on a dell latitude e5570), but I am considering a new laptop because everyone says macbooks are great and outperform windows (which on gradle builds is true).
I mainly use my laptop only for developing and programming things like: full-stack, Android and a little bit of deeplearning/ML.
So which one would you recommend and why? These are pretty heavy tasks, from my opinion.10 -

How to fix the “Service Battery” Warning on Mac ? I have done the prescribed method before— reset SMC and recalibrate battery. It only hides the warning for a certain amount of time. I am looking for a more permanent fix.3
