Unbelievable...
My company bought me a new laptop. It has 2 512 GB SSDs.
Our IT set it up with windows 10.
ON BOTH SSD.
OM fucking G. How dump you have to be to install windows 10 two times in the same machine? What kind of mental illness is this?40 -
After moving to SSD I noticed I'm too slow for my computer. When it finishes working I can feel it asking me "you done thinking m8?"4
-
Installed Visual Studio 2015. I have 162GB left in my SSD.
Uninstalled Visual Studio 2015. I have 151GB left in my SSD.6 -
Upgraded work PC to a SSD. Can't believe the difference it made. It's like a new computer.
Only trouble is, now I can't blame the computer for my slow work...
Maybe I can blame the RAM from now on.9 -
So here's the new hotness... HP Envy X360.
I7
32 GB RAM
512 Gb SSD
1 TB HDD
Blows my old MacBook Pro away.56 -
I finally built a new PC with 8GB memory, i7 4790K and SSD for OS.
My old system was a core2duo with 2GB memory. Android studio used to take 20mins for gradle sync and another 20min for signing apks. "Live preview" and "emulator" was a thing of the future for me. Never used it.
But now things have changed. This thing boots up in less than 5 sec and studio gradle takes less than 30sec. I'm so happy right now! Its like a dream come true! *cries in happiness*14 -
I'm regretting not having have done this long time ago. You can tell the difference from HDD right away. Everything loads up really fast... Heck, Android Studio even loads fast lol
Switch to SSD to save your life and time 😀12 -
Since everybody is posting a picture of their hardware and DE here's mine!
Xiaomi notebook air 13 with Elementary OS
i5-6200U @2.8 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce 940MX
8 GB DDR4 Ram
256 PCIe SSD

Just got an AMAZING deal on a "couple" of SSD drives
240GB WD - $12
120GB WD - $9
500GB WD - $20
2TB WD - $90
Let's hope that they show up :D52 -
My first machine with a primary partition on SSD and it restarts so fast I had a nerd-gasm!
SSD all the things!!!4 -
What the actual fuck apple?
The SSD is soldiered on the new macbook "pro"?
Drives fail you know, and that thing costs an arm and a leg and even a fuckin liver or two.11 -
Use SSDs.
It's not hard. They've been around for a while, small ones are cheap now and are more than enough for at least 90% of developers. The rest can probably afford 2TB NVMe.
Why waste 60$ on a worthless 500GB HDD that will load the OS in the time that's enough for you to make scrambled eggs?
Instead, use 60$ on a 128GB SSD. Sure, it's smaller, but if speed is important for you, you can forget a bit about saving all of the porn you see online, or about installing every free game from Steam.
SSDs are cheap already. And the performance advantage they give is ENORMOUS. You can have a core i9, 64GB of fastest RAM bla bla bla, but if you don't have an SSD, a Celeron with an SSD will seem faster.
Get one, and NEVER again cry about long loading times of IDEs, unless you feel like 30 seconds for the longest load time is too much. If your time is THAT valuable, then you can afford NVMe SSDs in RAID 10 (which can be done easily in software with btrfs if you're on Linux).
Seriously!
Every day I see posts like "Visual Studio is crap because it installs for 6 hours", or "Android studio starts in 30 minutes", or "Visual Studio Code sucks because it loads for too long compared to vim".
It's as if you only have access to budget 10 year old computers.27 -
Completely rebuilt my pc and get to sell my old one to my boss so that I can get paid to work on it 😂😂😂

Bloody idiot online retailer sent me a used SSD.
I found out with a SMART scan; I was so pissed I wanted to drive over to the store and punch the owner's lights out!9 -
Monday : SSD dies
Thursday : HDD dies, so I take one out of the laptop to have a working pc
Today : Said HDD dies
Due to lack of hardware components for my pc to kill off, my current setup consists of 1 usb for live system and two more to act as storage
Next paycheck can't come fast enough9 -
SSD size 128GB
Windows 10: let's go and use 40 fucking GB for windows.old.
Like WTF, use 1/3 of my ducking storage for "I don't trust updating myself so here's a massive restore point"
Fuck you windows.14 -
> replaces HDD with SSD in weak-ass laptop, powers it on

'tis true, once you experience the glory of SSDs you can't go back to HDD based systems.6 -
The most famous ranter in devRant (maybe) rants now due to cleaning.
LG Ultrawide 29" monitor
Logitech bluetooth keyboard K380
Logitech wireless mouse B175
Rubber ducky
LG UltraPC laptop (not in pic)
- Intel core i5 7th gen
- 8gb ram
- 256gb ssd + external 1tb hdd
- NVIDIA GeForce 940MX12 -
This is my computer workstation.
The computer has 8 GB of DDR3 RAM, a Radeon R5 graphics card and soon I will add an SSD hard disk on which I will install the operating systems.15 -
My "new desktop PC".
6 core xeon CPU with hyperthreading x2 (24 virtual cores) over clocked to 3.9ghz
128gb ddr3 ecc ram
256gb SCSI hard drives in RAID 0
256 Samsung ssd
AMD r9 something something 8gb ddr5 vram gpu
Got it for £120 on eBay (except for the ssd and gpu). Still missing a sound card :(
I have no idea on what to use it yet except for development but I thought it'd be cool to build a pretty good "desktop pc" for around £350-£400.14 -
This is the day guys.
Finally decided to move entirely to Linux.
Just swaped my old dual-booted Ubuntu/Windows HDD with an SSD and installed the lastest version of Ubuntu and all the software I needed.
I fucking love this feeling 😄😄11 -
Working with SSD is like working with an old man. It knows a lot, and tell you things right off the shelve, but it can die at any time.7
-
Yesterday my my mother had problems with Office365 and called a servicedesk. They said her computer was slow and that an SD could improve the speed. My mother said that there already was an SSD in there to which he replied yes but that is for RAM, to make opening things faster you need an SD like in your phone...
Where is the world going?13 -
Okay... I think I will just delete AppData to have a stable Windows installation.

Got my first SSD yesterday. I... i just want to have sex with her.. i name her Shy Sheila Droid.. oops jizzed my pants36

Finally got time to share my new laptop. I love its rgb backlight keyboard. I will buy a NVMe SSD and second monitor asap.6

Installed an SSD in my Linux box. Installed fresh distro, tried to log in via SSH on localhost. Didn't work. Tried like three times, turned off firewalls, restarted ssh servers, nothing.
Looked at username. Typo in username when setting things up. *facepalm*1 -
I'm a web developer and know jack about hardware. My wife's personal laptop was going very slow so decided to upgrade to a SSD. How hard could it be?
Turns out to be very fiddly trying to disconnect and reconnect 4 ribbon cables. To get to the HD and replace it.
Restarted laptop and thought it was all good, but only certain keys worked and the mouse pad moved but didn't click?!?
Had to take it apart and reconnect twice more but now it's fully functioning once again.
Sticking to software in future. Massive respect to hardware specialists!6 -
Yes, that’s an M2 drive plugged in via usb 2.0. I dunno, maybe when you just need size over anything else maybe that’s ok but wasting all that work that ssd engineers put into making m2 drives so fast just feels stupid.24
-
At first I got excited about the new MacBook Air specs. Then I saw the price... It's a fucking joke to spend so much money for this trash ass hardware you get for it. I mean 1400€ for dual core 8gb ram 128gb ssd?!?!?!
Fuck you8 -
Behold the results of photoshopping pictures for the last 3 weeks....
Now I should be able to delete 10GB of RAWs from my 256GB SSD....
Next up, the 4 hours of videos.... and my interview tomorrow.... wish me luck?undefined i think im getting better at lying to myself did i just procrastinate i should be sleeping7 -
A friend of mine bought a new laptop with an ssd and called me over since it behaved weirdly. All the icons on the desktop would turn to white squares and slowly reload their images. Also the laptop was pretty slow.
She said she had brought it to the store to show that behaviour and the only advice they would give was to reinstall windows...
So I started checking on what processes are running...
The thing was constantly running an "optimization" tool... which, you guessed it, was constantly defragmentating... the ssd... are you fkn serious who set up that shit this way... -
PSA: RAM Disks are amazing.
So, I've just discovered something which I haven't really thought of before-- RAM disks.
Pretty self explanatory, a disk which uses RAM.
Obviously SSDs are fast but HOLY FUCK THIS IS BEAUTIFUL!!
IT IS INSTANT-FUCKING-TANIOUS.
Imagine an SSD stuffed with caffeine and then given steroids. It is wonderful.
If you spare RAM I must recommend you at least try it:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/...14 -
So the new laptop stopped powering on. Nothing I did worked, so I used the warranty service. I probably should have taken the SSD out...18
-
My workstation; My main development PC sports an i7-4790, GTX 970, a 128 GB SSD, and two 1TB HDD's. I run Windows 10 and I have Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Other than that nothing special!4
-
By the time Visual Studio's auto completion kicked in, I went to canteen, had lunch, talked with mom and relaxed for 10 minutes.
In case anyone thinks I have a slow PC, it's a quad core core i5 with SSD7 -
Modern tragedy in four lines:
- I just bought a new 1TB SSD
- Look at all this free space
- Let's do npm install
- Oh no6 -
Desktop SSD just failed. All VMs lost. Domain admins too drunk to fix. No timesheets no sprint diary no mail no IM.6
-
Son a fucking bitch!
I ordered a brand new shiney SSD for my Inspiron 7573 which came in today. I was all set up with system backups just in case and install media for Debian and Windows standing by. I pull out my tools and realize that the laptop isn't going to have a screw inside to hold the drive in since it didn't come with a SSD. No big deal, I pull out the magnetic bowl of extra screws from all the previous repairs I've done and start looking for the screw I need. I can't find the screw I need so I go online hoping maybe I'll find someplace in town that will have one single screw with no luck.
Now I get to wait 2 more days for the screw I need to arrive from Amazon.12 -
4x4ghz CPU, 16gb of RAM, 100mbps downstream and 1tb ssd... and it took windows only 2 hours and 4 restarts to install an update...WTF11

TIL: There are phones with 512GB and even 1TB internal storage... WHO THE FUCK NEEDS THAT MUCH STORAGE IN THEIR PHONE?!! Your phone becomes an external 1TB SSD with a touchscreen at that point...19

*Sigh*
Eclipse is such horrendous garbage, it somehow even manages to run like shit on an SSD.
Literally all my software runs smooth as butter on the SSD, even VS ffs. No, not Eclipse. Still hangs up constantly, fails to respond, takes ages to do things.
Incredible.9 -
> reboots PC
> goes to work
> goes to hang out with friends after work

FML... damn thing even has an SSD in ir for crying out loud6 -
Finnaly own a Mac!
Yes she may be an old 2009 model but with the upgraded RAM and added SSD, it's butteryu smooth!13 -
Ok so it's not a good SSD for PC's then... Fucking hate how many YouTubers so this shit just for SEO2

Was thinking of upgrading my HDD to SSD.
Decided to make a post on Reddit to seek advice. Bloody laptop froze.
Had to kill it and force restart it. Seems like my laptop can read the posts that I am making.
What luck!22 -

So Microsoft, you tell me that there is a known bug, if you have Windows 10 with the newest update installed on a SSD and Apps running on another hard drive?! And this bugs causes random freezes of the whole PC from time to time?
WHAT THE FUCK?!
It is a common setup nowadays to have a SSD with windows 10 and software on other hard drives and you didn't care to check it before releasing the update? Which I HAVE to download and install?
FUCK YOU MICROSOFT!8 -
Could not live anymore without SSD, I’m running vagrant up since 5pm and I believe that I’ll not sleep before 3am (again)...1
-
Whoever thought it was a good idea to put a 64 gb ssd in a laptop needs to rethink their decisions.5
-
Just bought an SSD for my mother's 8 year laptop (i5). I suggested her to let me install Linux, since it would definitely run smoother than Win 10, and she finally agreed. Let's hope she gets used to it.
Btw, I was thinking either on Ubuntu or Mint. (Suggestions welcome)12 -
My 13yo brother will now receive an upgrade from an old hdd to a fast ssd, ram upgrade and most importantly Linux.
Teach’em young and teach’em right11 -
When the hero turns into villain.
Windows memory management is one of the worst architectural designs in tech industry to ever exist.
One mistake on my part is I did not opt for SSD four years ago when my purchased my current laptop.
The entire experience is irritating.33 -
I have breathed new life into this little thing.
Acer Aspire One Netbook
Intel Atom N450 @1.66GHz

Bodhi Linux
I'm tempted to replace the HDD with an SSD.12 -
I just got an SSD! Now I can do stuff super fast- oh wait I have to reinstall Windows and Debian... 😨6

What happened with proprietary OS?
Now if you don't have an SSD ,the whole UI is so slow.
It only happens with MacOs and Windows.
One more reason to use Linux7 -
Ok i post it a bit late but what the hell.
This is my monster now! I now shall conquer the world!
MSI GL62 7RD

Ok i already had that configuration for a while... but it was sloooowwwww D:
That is why for my birthday/chrismas i bought myself additional 8GB of ram and a tiny nvme ssd to make everything 1000x faster! 😎
1 ++ for a person who reads how big the ssd is...11 -
So glad my laptop is upgradable. A month ago I had 12GB RAM and no SSD, now I have 16GB RAM and a 250GB SSD plus the 1TB HDD that I already had, an i7-4700mq, and a GeForce GT 740M.
Unfortunately the graphics card isn’t working great yet, but my system is on its way!2 -

Which Linux flavour should I install in my newly ordered ssd ?
My usage will be
vscode, chrome, mongodb,
android studio
Please take consideration of ease in installing hardware drivers. Didn't want to waste so much time on it.26 -
My grandfather gave me a laptop of a friend of his, to install an OS.
His friend had a new hard drive installed and apparently they sold him an SSD. He told me that the company that installed it, told him that it was better because it was more expensive.
Of course, an old fellow needs SSD for simple things like YouTube and such.

After several long nights of learning to resize encrypted lvm partitions, fixing grub, finding screws, and waiting....
I finally managed to move my system files from the old drive to the new SSD.

Just reinstalled Windows to an SSD, so I'm reinstalling MS office. Office 365 is helpfully provided by my university. I also use Visio a good bit, and again my University helpfully provides Visio 2016.
Install Office 365.
Download 2.2GB Visio iso.
Mount Visio iso, run setup.exe.
Get this message.

I just upgraded to an SSD (finally! I know right?), and holy crap, SSDM showed up in less than 2 seconds!
Oh I've been missing out on life!
IT'S SOOO FAST!!!!3 -
Why is everything slow in windows even if I have a 16GB memory? Maybe because not SSD? 😑
Slow to open in windows:
- Docker, Postman, etc22 -
Was running low on ssd space, so I decided to have a thorough look at what was occupying all of it. First I found out that I had about 5 gigs (!) of leftovers from microsoft sql server which I unfortunately had to use once (thanks microsoft for your shit uninstallers). Then I found I still had a .gradle folder (uninstalled a while ago, maven ftw) with another 5 gigs of cache. That should give me some room to breathe.4
-
Shit. My ssd died y-day. Got a new one [970evo] today (tx bro!).
Guess who's gonna spend the night recreating the whole env: ui, scripts, triggers, integrations, tunnels, qemu vms, apps, bkup restores,....

Today I cleaned my computer SSD (moved ~30GB to a 2TB external drive) and I found 12GB of lost projects.
I thought that I've lost them years ago. They were just looking at me in their big folder. -
Thinking of swapping my laptop's 5400rpm hdd for an ssd (evo 850), but not sure if it's a priority.12

If I unplug a charger then my laptop immediately turns off
if I run a hw diag [boot into diag mode], it says I have a healthy battery, but a faulty ssd

Bought a new 4TB disk for my gaming rig, pulled out the old 1TB one and plugged it back on my old machine. Installed Ubuntu Server. Instalation went well after I figured I needed the IOMMU turned on.
Later went to play some BfA on the gaming rig and... No boot disk recognized. Ahn?
My SSD is plugged in. SATA cable is well seated. Thing was working not 30min before...
After a loooong time trying to figure out if it was hardware or micro$hit's Windows 10, I finally figured it:
It seems Windows installed its EFI partition on the old HDD. So my SSD is basically a single, large NTFS volume. Now I need to download the Win10 ISO, boot up the install disk and use the cmd prompt to create a new EFI partition on my SSD. Ugh.
Fucking Windows didn't think to install its boot manager on its own disk. "Nah, just gonna use this random magnetic disk here". Why? My login queues are already huge on WoW, why must this wankstain of an OS annoy me even more?3 -
I made the switch and my laptop is thanking me. The laptop is SATA II so I opted for a cheap SSD. Insane difference on boot up, shutdown, and opening programs.1
-
That feeling when you have unused 128gb ssd in your workstation for more than a year and have no clue why you originally installed it.. 🤔1
-
Well what an adventure with this SSD...😑
my sis' laptop is from 2013-ish(?) and has/had a slow HDD in it. I wanted to speed it up, before her study, so I bought a new internal SSD (no new laptop wanted).
Created a bootable USB, exchanged the hard drives and install the OS on it. Seems easy enough...
The laptop restarts to finish its process ... laptop shuts down immediately, no warning whatsoever. 😳🤨
Start it up, loading screen, fan gets louder and louder ... instant shut down.😳🤨🤨.
Redo process, this time landing on blue-screen, error code critical process died? ... instant shut down again.🤔
Restart from old HDD, normal.😐
Retry with boot USB and reinstall SSD. Setup process copying files, meanwhile instant shut down.😳 Please don't tell me!😩 Since every part of the laptop was working, except the new inserted SSD, I thought "FUCK not a broken SSD!😣"
I had my own PC with internal SSD slot, so tried to find out, whether it would be broken...
All starting up fine??🤨🤨
Ok then? Finish the setup for the third time now ... everything up and running.😐🤷
Normal shut down, unplug, plug back onto laptop, it works. HOW?? WHY?? 😕
Why the fuck are you suddenly working? 😐🤷🤷🤷
That's some magic...5 -
I've reinstalled android studio five timed… today. on a chromebook, 4gb, ram. but 16gb ssd. it has no regard for storage whatsoever.1
-
So I got a 1.7 grand laptop for free a week ago.
Fuck me, the company I'm working at is the best.
Hp elitebook 840 g5, 16 gigs and auto -crypting ssd.
Corpo life is the best. Shame it's got windows on it and I can't get linux on it.5 -
Oh my god has anyone seen or used these. Ssd pci cards. From western digital? 2000 mbs read speed. That's stupid fast.7
-
I upgraded a PC with an SSD and had to reinstall twice because windows thought it would be a good Idea just to use the boot partition of the old drive instead of creating a new one on the SSD.
I first noticed that something was weird because I could only delete the system and not the boot partition on the old drive using diskpart. I restarted the machine thinking it would help only for the bios to tell me there was no os on the ssd. I tried booting from the old hdd and sure enough, I landed on the desktop of the ssd install.
To resolve that I had to unplug the other drive, reinstall windows and only then I could boot normally.
60mins of my life wasted as I had just finished installing all the software...7 -

Boss: Yes he does
Coworker: *opens computer* let's see, two 1TB hard drives... but no SSD... Oh, there it is. It's hidden. But it's booting too slow to be....

I became storage addicted… started with a 240 GB SSD + a 2 TB HDD... two years later added a new 1 TB SSD, a few months later when the HDD died changed it with a 4 TB one… a few days later I bought a 10 TB NAS (80% off on Amazon, too cheap not to buy).

Pro Tip #12:
If you boot of HDD buy one of the cheap 240 GB SSD and try yourself. Windows finally boots in less than 5000 min.2 -
Piece of shit shitware called visual studio, I only need you because of that stupid vcvarsall.dll, so I gave you a folder on my HDD, but nooo, You just had to ignore this and place yourself on my SSD. My poor SSD that has very little space left.
Fuck you visual studio. To me you are a literal waste of Time, Space and Sanity2 -

Why people think that Mac is better than pc? Im Mac user and I like Mac. I think Apple just uses better hardware and charges extra for it. If you build windows with better hardware then windows will work really fast too. On Mac gradle build takes really less time because of SSD it does not mean Mac is faster. Get SSD for windows and see the difference yourself.
- P.S. Not hater of any OS.6 -
was handed a new .NET project (im not a C# guy). i go to spin up a windows 10 machine, i have a 20 gig SSD thinking that would be enough - Windows 10 + Visual studio is 24 gigs???? WTF!!!!2

Me: "over 7yrs old."
Rando: "Wow! Mustve not used it too much, still that's pretty long."
Me: "Actually, it's been my primary device, heavily used, as I'm a dev. I just know what/when to use SSD vs the HDD."

Just got the intestine of my laptop changed(HDD), Got it replaced with a new one(SSD-512gb, THE BEAST), Feeling a lot healthy now ;)2

First World problems. Do I upgrade my 120gb (with 40gb free) to a 256 or replace my 1tb platter (700gv free) with a 500gb SSD.6

Been using my 2013 mac mini to code at work and I will have to say this little guys is a trooper. I would recommend for anybody looking for a cheap dev desktop.....install an ssd if you can.5

Moving a partition on my ssd to the left. Therfore it copies 98GB. ~50GB of them are used.
Speed: 25 MB/s. Wtf?11 -
When syncing node_modules via nfs to Vagrant it's an even better excuse than 'it's compiling' - it literally takes 2-3 hrs and the ssd request is pending for over a month now. Looks like nobody sees it as an issue...1

Family's out. Sunny Saturday. Summer time. ... ... got a SSD from company: stays home installing dev tools and what not just to check new speedy computer.

I have a gaming laptop with a 125gb ssd and 1 TB secondary drive. Ssd has just 20 GB free.
I wanna dual boot windows 10 and arch. Most of the secondary drive is full of steam games. Win 10 for gaming and arch is for projects.
What's a good way to partition the drives for arch? I can't guess how much space either will need in the future. And what do I do with the other drive?7 -
TLDR; macOS wouldn’t update to the version I needed because I have a 3rd party SSD. All I needed was a firmware update only found deep within a google search and a secondary SO answer.
I have a video edit project this weekend. No big deal.
Except that the Final Cut Pro project was saved in the latest version of FCPX, for which I need latest MacOS version
As a music producer on the side, I had heard the new file system of MacOS High Sierra would possibly break audio plugins. I didn’t bother updating until now. Looked further into plugin problem, it would be simply a broken hard link which I can easily fix. No big deal.
Except that I have upgraded my MBP SSD from 256gb to this 3rd party 480gb SSD. macOS does not recognize this SSD as compatible with update. No big deal. Simple google search for a terminal command would do the trick.
Except that I found and tried several solutions, including wasting an entire hour updating the original ssd and booting from that to try to update it.
Nothing worked, but deep down in the google search, found in a secondary answer on SO, there was a link for a beta release of a firmware update for the SSD that took two minutes to install, and I was finally able to update.
That firmware update needs to be more prominent everywhere. Wasted well over 3-4 hours updating crap, swapping out SSDs, and googling when all I needed was a fucking firmware update.9 -
Just sitting around waiting for a 220GB Database to import, if I had a spare PCI-E port I could have used a 240GB NVMe PCIe SSD but now I have to use an old Seagate 500gb HHD. Gonna be a while.5

Tried installing Antergos on an external 1TB SSD to give it a try after having checkout Mint, now my laptop won't boot from it anymore after having removed and reinserted the disk and it skips to Ubuntu's grub on my HDD or windows.
Ubuntu's grub does show antegros whenever the ssd is plugged in though, and then I get this error while trying to boot it. Also changing the boot order doesn't do much and it skips to the next thing on the list.
I'm probably going to overwrite antergos and try to use portable antergos on it, perhaps it wasn't made to hoot from a removable drive. Ubuntu and windows still work fine but ubuntu is on my hdd because the internal ssd is full of windows, and super slow.
So now I have a partitioned ssd that doesn't work and a grub entry that gives an error ugh :/ (and a slow ubuntu but that's not as bad)
Anyone else have any idea of what happened? I have definitely seen antergos work before packing up and removing the drive, so the installation was succesful.5 -
>Client: Hey, I lost my Facebook password but it's saved on my old laptop
>Me: ...alright, i'll look
>Laptop: won't boot - "No bootable devices found!"
hoo boy
>opens 'er up to pull drive
this is really heavy for an SSD, Corsair, and especially for only 64GB
>plugs into other PC
nothing
fuck me
>sees jumper pins
>jumps them
>BAREFOOT-ROM RECOVERYMODE SSD DEVICE - 128GB
that's twice the size of the disk, wtf?
but ok, i'll take it, any data?
>Win10: *crashes because driver chokes*
>Win7: *crashes because driver chokes*
>WinXP: *doesn't see it, TestDisk doesn't run because Kernel32.DLL issue*

Dual booted Linux Mint and Windows from an SSD for the first time.
The speed....incredible!
Why did I take so long to do this for myself?!5 -
Had a buy a salesperson a desktop to replace the one he has that has a bad HDD. I discovered he uses no storage on the thing and that buying a computer with 12 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD, was cheaper than 8 GB with any size HDD I could find at the store so we got that.
Now I'm jealous of his 10 seconds or less boot time while I have to struggle every morning waiting at least a full minute for my computer to get to login, and another one once I put in my password.6 -
My server is taking 7 minutes to boot with an ssd 🤔...
Time to systemctl blame the shit out of the system and figure out what config I messed up!9 -
Woke up yesterday to find the OS drive failed in my hypervisor.
24 hours later and amazon prime have delivered a new SSD to get back on track.
Thank god for backups, probably going to setup HA now aswell, but great end to a week :(7 -
When you find out the 960 EVO M.2 SSD you rush delivered isn't supported on your motherboard so you have to return it and rush deliver an 850 EVO instead.3

Ive been tryna install hearthstone on linux for the past 4 hours. In this time i could have bought an ssd, installed windows on it and played like 10 matches.
Which reminds me, if i put a windows on an ssd can i just change the boot drive in the bios?5 -
Okay soooo.... I have this laptop that I use a little less often but is bugging me about. So WINDOWS just decides to RAMP UP THE HARD DRIVE TO ALL HELL WHENEVER I NEED TO USE IT.
I have a few options:
- Replace the 1TB 5400RPM with a 120GB SSD and do Linux
- Replace the 1TB with the 120GB and do a fresh install of Windows
- Replace Windows with Linux, keeping the 1TB
- or reinstall Windows
Which do you suggest and why?4 -
Woke up, full of motivation for work.
But I guess windows knew better. It's been 30min already, and it operate on an SSD.
And here I thought this was going to be a good day...2 -
So I ordered an SSD. It's 1TB for some programs I want to startup faster. I have 3*1TB HDDs to store some movies, series and personal stuff (you know what I am talking about) and a 128 M.2 SSD for Windows. After connecting the new SATA SSD it wouldn't show up. After half an hour searching for a problem related to the wiring, UEFI configuration and other mythical problems coming to my mind I took the instructions of my motherboard. This was the moment I found out that those fuck faces implemented the biological feature of turning one thing off when using another.5

Was working on Windows 10 laptop with SSD.
Put to sleep mode n went for lunch.
Came back, switched on, blue screen.
Restarted, can not boot.
Opened back panel, removed ssd, connected to other machine with cable, did not detect. Shit, my 1tb SSD is gone.
Took out old rusty 128gb SSD, reformatted it.
Downloaded windows 10 bootloader on USB n reinstalled windows.
From my backed up choco script, reinstalled all apps.
Back to work.1 -
Oh.... Fuck.....
I have an SSD.... but it's taken more than 10 mins to changed from 25 to 26%...
And it just restarted....
Now it's at 30%...
Now 50%...
I'm gonna goto dinner now and pray that I don't need to reinstall Windows...
btw I'm atheist...6 -

Cause: The LITE-ON SSD cache drive. So, can't blame MS for this one, but BSODs are great flamebait regardless of cause.

So this is a story all about how:
I went from my brother being asked to clone the disk of old laptop to a new one. My m.2 ssd being held in with duct tape because of it and me having to run a tar command that took over 5 hours to complete.
So my bro got asked by a friends mom to help her with "PC Problems". In short the old laptop was barely useable and they ordered a new one on the reccomendations of my brother. Turns out the laptop he recomended shoud have had a 1tb hdd in it. Instead it had a 256gb m.2. Note: The old disk was 500GB.
So cloning wasnt possible. He then told me, that they also bought a regular sata ssd which was supposed to go in instead of the non present hdd. So I <-Want to emphasize on this! went to work.
Ordered a ssd in the right form factor.
Made a disk image of the old HDD.
Had to drill out the screw holding in my m.2 ssd as it was stuck.
Its now held in with a piece of kepton tape.
Wrote old disk's image on new disk.
It doesnt boot in new laptop.
Spend an evening trying to rebuild boot partitions.
Fuck it, lets install windows 10 (instead of 7) and copy all the shit over manually!
Lets buy office for 30$ on g2a as it would be a pain in the ass to explain the that its normally a subscription.
Previous rant happend.
Brought them the laptop yesterday telling them I did all the work.
I collect the ssd they ordered explaing i ordered the correct one and would take tis one for me.
Still had the 500GB img file of the disk and wanted to compress it in order to put some data back in place.
The tar command took over 5 hours to complete! I havent checked on it yet as I went to sleep. -

Sometimes the smallest things bring joy:
I am currently equipping some old company laptops with SSDs, normally I use a boot CD to do the cloning, booting from CD takes ages. Yesterday I figured I might aswell etch the image of the backup software on one of the SSDs, turns out once booted I can just use that one as target for the process, so now I have a bunch of one time use SSDs, feels pretty cool for no particular reason. -

Currently trying to make a multi boot machine, with a lot of linux distros inside, like debian, fedora, gentoo and arch.
I know I will have to format everything a lot of time, because of stupid mistakes, I want to try to put /home in common, and play with some more SSD, and to put a preempt_rt patched kernel somewhere.
I am starting from debian,
Format counter: 3
Reason 0: because i need to install at least once...
Reason 1: I am stupid
Reason 2: I disconnected the SSD,to connect a disk with windows. Now bootloader doesn't find any os in the SSD anymore... still no clue, and in case of doubt: give windows the fault 😠😠😠
DAMN YOU WINDOWS, how did you find that I want to use debian? What did you do to break it?? (Despite it wasn't even connected?!?)
I have checked everything about secure boot, and I am sure it is disabled...
And every search online gives results about dual boot, but it is not my case... :/ -
So on my computer I have 3 drives. I had two m.2 ssds and one sata ssd. I thought I had misc data on my sata. Turns out I had it on the second m.2. So I have been running my game installs off of the slower sata... I found out because I am updating my m.2 drives to 2TB from 1TB. What is funny is the data on the second m.2 is just temp storage. So I pulled it and put my new second m.2 2T drive to clone from the sata. It was failing to clone over usb for some reason. Not sure if software or something with drive. Cloning in process so will find out soon. The funny part is this makes it easier to update because I was using drives wrong. DOH!
It will be nice going from 3TB to 5TB. Woot!2 -
Great. How am I supposed to put in my SSD? There's probably an extra screw somewhere I can't see locking it in...

Playing ME:A, game froze, alt-tab out to try and close it, can see my mouse moving around but the screen the game is playing on is staying black. Whatever, shit happens, I'll just hard power off and reboot.
Powered down, push the power button, SSD isn't booting, being sent to BIOS. "Oh no."
SSD isn't listed in available boot options. "Shit." Checked the cables and what not, nothing, pretty sure it died on me. Go to Fry's to get a new 960 EVO m.2, sold out, go to the other one 30mins away that says it has one in stock, it doesn't either. 😧

Question.
I recently got an Asus K53S for free, without HDD/SSD.
Im looking to purchase a cheap but kinda reliable and fast SSD, at 64GB or more. Money is an issue, and the laptop is just for pure fun, so id rather get bad quality and save some cash, rather than spending alot.
Does anyone know where i can purchase that, or have experience with cheap/trash SSDs? Any recommendations appreciated.
If its shipped from outside EU, the price should be $12 or less, and i doubt thats possible.24 -

Question...
I have a Windows 10 installation on my laptop...
A few weeks back my father bought an SSD for his Lenovo ThinkPad T500. Problem was - I couldn't install Windows on that laptop due to legacy BIOS (the T500 is old but gold). My solution was that I put the SSD into my eSATA portable HDD / SSD rack, and I installed Windows to the SSD on my laptop. It worked, but now, when I boot up my laptop it always asks which Windows do I want to boot up (only one Windows is present - the other throws an error). I switched the defaults, and now it boots up fine, but that choice really slows down my usually fast SSD boot (it has a 10 second timer before automatically chosing the default option).
How can I reconfigure it?
Or is it only possible by a clean install?4 -
I got a new laptop .I tried to get linux onto a flash drive.didnt work.put me on grub screen.didnt know what to do.i asked the shop to install an ssd to put linux on it .so the ssd is installed and I cannot change it otherwise the warranty is voided.fml12

Everything seems great, Laptop's performance is good, pycharm runs faster etc. However, when I shutdown the laptop, it takes nearly 3-4 minutes to shutdown. Restarting laptop hardly takes 30 seconds. The only problem is shutting down. I've tried everything, resintalled OS( windows 10 home (GPT partition)) , drivers and os are up to date, updated bios but there is no change. It still takes 3-4 minutes to shutdown. Any ideas?1

Lenovo Yoga and Linux
I'm looking for a laptop. I found the Lenovo IdeaPad 520s, but then I found the Yoga 520 for around the same price with the same specs. I was very interested, until I read about the whole Yoga 900 RAID to AHCI drama where people were unable to install Linux and Lenovo ended up providing a Linux-only BIOS update.
Can someone tell me if I would have problems installing Arch Linux on such laptop? Would I be better off buying the IdeaPad 520s? Both laptops don't have a PCIe SSD, they just have M.2 SSD. Does this mean there won't be a problem? I'm so confused.
This might not be the right place to ask, but everyone seems to be so kind to each other here on devrant...17 -
Laptops recommendations? MacBook Pro is so damn expensive, budget 800€/700£ more or less... I was looking for something with at least i5, ssd, fhd screen, 15"5

I have one SSD for Windows and one HDD for Data. After I install Windows 10 Anniversary from iso, I get this message when access HDD drive. How to fix this!15

So I had this discussion yesterday..
Virtual Machines on a SSD: Yes or no? Good or Evil?
What's your opinion?
I keep the OS partition of my VMs on my SSD, because they are unusable otherwise. At least if it is a Windows vm.6 -
I have a Macbook with 128GB PCIe SSD that's very pricey to upgrade. Considering switching to another UNIX distro but will that solve my storage problem or should I bite the bullet and just upgrade it? Or both?5

What a holy shit the fucking Windows File History and all the rubbish from the Microsoft installer files!! Is it so difficult to remove automatically the unnecessary packages!!! My SSD partition for Windows is completely full of rubbish!!4
-
Both laptops have the same price.
which one you think is better ?
(already used) MacBook Air 250GB SSD Nvidia Graphics 4GB RAM Intel Core i5 Processor
(brand new) HP Pavilon 1TB HDD Nvidia Graphics 12GB RAM Intel Core i7 Processor.30 -
Fuuuuck...
My SSD decided to stop booting and sometimes not even being recognised by bios...
Ive tried to recover it with live-USB but every program freezes after finding the partitions. I had so many hours of work not pushed to git yet...5 -
Me: Time to work on wife's website.
Server: Unable to Validate DMI.
Me: Reboot.
Server: HAHA no CPU information and still no DMI
Me: Remove drives part from SSD.
Server: HI THERE.

Fucking Ubuntu.
I got the shit because wanted to try it out.
It was intended to get installed in a SSD, which had a Windows installation and 100gb free.
Even showed the option to install it alongside Windows.
I heard a little voice in my head saying "manual partition just to be sure".
But thought Hey, this option says it will install it alongside Windows.
What happened? Ubuntu used another drive, part of a 3 disk RAID0 array.
So now I've completely lost 1tb information (because it was THE backup).
At least I still have 100gb free on the ssd.
Fuck you ubuntu and Fuck you canonical!5 -
I was going to install my SSD in my desktop, but I could also put it in one of my laptops. I feel like, since my desktop is faster anyway, it might be worth it to install it in a laptop so I can program faster while not at home.
What do you people think? If I do the laptop, should I do my Dell Inspiron 15 3542 or my 2008 macbook pro? -
I was eyeing Samsung T7 ssd for a while now it pulls about 1000MB/s
But then i can across a M.2 nvme ssd + enclosure for about same price with double the performance
Some of Samsung’s 970 evo are pulling 3GB/s , but I think i will be limited by my CPU in that case
So much confusion for buying a freaking storage15 -
> Get sent to local client that manages most services on prem themselves
> We just deliver the software and setup instructions, client is self-proclaimed "technical enough" to handle the rest
> Never had issues with them, client for about 1,5year, we assume they are indeed technical enough
> Local client needs me for some help with their "backup solution"
> Cron job that dd's entire disk every week to external ssd.
> External ssd finally caved in after what was most likely years of torture
> Has nothing even remotely to do with our software (which has built-in backups, which they apparently don't use)
> I get scolded and screamed at when I say not our problem

Sorry, technical question but my SSD is running out of space...
Not sure why the old versions are still here... they're taking up a few GBs... Can I just delete them? They're not in Add/Remove7 -
Anyone here replaced their MBP (Mid-2012) Non-retina's HDD to Raid0 SSD? How is it holding up? Planning to do this in a month3

Finally got myself to buy a SSD for my laptop, so I was thinking about trying Ubuntu Mate...but wtf...
I like it because it is similar to Unity but stability is awful. It breaks every 5 minutes. Very not funny.1 -
My first CS class is a basic introductory C++ course. Won't even be going into OOP.
So I want to use my own laptop for the course, but I have a Mac. Thought I could use Visual Studio for Mac for the class, but turns out Visual Studio for Mac is really only for Multiplatform development with C#. Ok, then, screw that. Just wasted 20GB and an evening installing that just to uninstall it.
I'm using JetBrain's CLion for now, but apparently we'll be doing some graphics work later this semester so I'm going to need to install Windows via Bootcamp and Visual Studio there... but my SSD is too small...
I currently have Windows/Bootcamp installed on a 1TB external hard disk but that is slow af. My SSD is only 250GB and I've already used half of it for various programs I need (Adobe crap plus Logic crap cuz I make videos and music).
My only option here is to buy a new SSD but only one manufacturer sells those (OWC), and a 1TB SSD is stupid expensive, $700 almost as much as I paid for this laptop used.
So, I guess I'm just kinda deciding right now whether upgrading storage is really worth it...6 -
What laptop requirements do you guys have for laptops for use when developing? I need to replace my 7 year old well. Looking at a dell cos 13 with an i5-7200u, 128 gb SSD and 8gb of RAM. What do you guys think?7
-
Would you get a new laptop with Intel Celeron N3450, or slightly older with Intel Core i5 4310U? I'm talking both having 256 GB SSD, 8GB RAM and only iGPU? Both for pretty much same price.9

How does one pull the firmware from various devices, decompile them, edit them and then place them back on the device ?
Like say, ssd firmware, or the firmware on phones etc ?28 -
Hi guys, what specs do your coding laptop has? I would especially like to know if your laptop has a dedicated graphic card or an integrated one.
Mine has an i7, 32gb of ram, 500gb m2 SSD and an integrated graphic chip.11 -
Hello Everyone,
I am trying to learn to create apps with Android Studio and Swift5. However, my current laptop is not okay to work with its 4 GB RAM.
My question is, i am planning to buy a MacBook Air I5 8GB RAM 256 GB SSD. Do you think it is enough for me to learn coding in the first place and create apps?
Let me also state the fact that additional RAMs like 16 GB and bigger SSD size are really expensive in my country. So i’m looking for something that can work Swift and Android Studio (with Emulator) with no problem.
It would be great to hear from you about your experiences and advices.
Cheers!13 -
Hey devRanter? I want your opinion on the Surface as a programming laptop-ish. I need a new computer for travel and I have an hesitation between the Surface with a i5 and SSD 256GB vs a more classic laptop.
If I may ask for your favorite feature as well?8 -
I have a laptop with 8gb ram, 1Tb HDD, i5 7th gen running windows 10 and Ubuntu. Right now I'm using windows 10 as my primary OS, I'm simply addicted to the gestures especially the four finger swipe to switch desktops. I have been thinking of adding an SSD to the mix and my budget only permits a 120gb M.2 or a 250gb normal ssd.
The advantage with m.2 is that I can keep my HDD and boot my OS from the ssd and maybe install my IDEs on there but with the other ssd I'm gonna have to take my HDD out and use it as an external.
I read somewhere that 250gb above SSDs are the ones worth spending money on and that the 120 and 250 doesn't justify the price or life.
So my question is, should I go for an SSD? and if I do which one to go for m.2 or the normal one?3 -

Any recommendations for decent 13 inch laptop under 1400$ USD
- Atleast 8 gigs of RAM and option to upgrade
- resolution >= full HD
- storage >= 256 GB SSD
- battery >= 6 hrs heavy chrome usage
- Linux compatibility
- Cpu- nothing heavy - browser and docker containers, no building or compiling15 -
Goddamn I've been fighting with unRAID lately, all to find out I've probably got a broken SSD. And to top it all off I've fucked up the other one so I had to reformat it. Sometimes when shit goes south, IT REALLY FUCKING GOES SOUTH. Fml.

My laptop is powering off out of nowhere...
I've checked for SSD errors non found replaced it with HDD not issues at all ...
Any one can recommend a tool even if it's on Linux to scan for SSD issues?16 -
So, total hardware noobie here. My laptop is giving me shit long Android studio build times and i am thinking of adding a ssd in it .thoughts? My current laptop specs are win10/8gb ram/1 tb hdd/ i5 7th gen
Recently i had a battery repair where that guy confirmed that i don't have some kind of ssd slot (idk the name) but ssd could be placed in the area of hdd, and hdd could be attached in the place of optical disk using "caddy" something.
On hearing this, my friend is advising me not to get caddy attached as it would still somehow provide slower speeds than just the ssd. is it true?
I was thinking of going for a 240gb ssd but if my 1tb hard disk is removed, i would have a to rethink about the softwares i use, since my C:drive is usually taking around 500 gb itself17 -
Does every m2 socket support nvme?
I replaced the ssd in my hd notebook with a nvme one and it doesn't seem to recognize it..8 -
On a side note, XCode 14.0.1 up and running in a new time record on an HDD (not SSD)
Was always dreaming of this moment ever since XCode 6, finally it came true -
I have question related to hardware -

Planning a new PC build, what're people's experience with M.2 SSDs? Worth it?
I'm currently rockin a 80GB SSD which I've had for years (+5)! so it's time to upgrade either way!1 -
Protip: SSDs will help your PC boot up and run programs faster. If your computer doesnt have an SSD, you can always add one or two later.18

Luckily for my purposes SSD doesn't have to be accurate it just has to fail royally in a way which is highly accurate in its persistent failure :P8

So, got my first ssd. It's so freaking light 😳. I hope it's not just the outer casing without the internal PCB 🤪.
No, i wasn't living without an ssd. It's just to revive my 5 year old laptop 😅
