Caller: Hi, our printer is not working.
Customer Service: What is wrong with it?
Caller: Mouse is jammed.
Customer Service: Mouse? Printers don’t have a mouse.
Caller: Mmmmm? Oh really? I will send a picture….13 -
Call internet provider to ask about a problem :
costumer service: in order to help you, I need to know what windows version do you use, Windows 8, windows 7...
Me: I use linux
Costumer service : I'm sorry, we don't provide support to Windows Linux16 -
Alright, since Facebook released a VPN service a little while ago but they're actively advertising it as a secure and privacy friendly service, I felt like - although I'm very busy right now - I should do a security/privacy blog post about this.
If you even slightly care about your own privacy or the privacy of anyone you're communicating with, for the love of God, don't use this service.
Hereby a blog post explaining stuffs: https://much-security.nl//...44 -
Today I got to my new office. After booting my PC I noticed, that my phone-client isn't working.
I wrote an Incident to our helpline, telling them my phone isn't working.
After one hour I got an mail:
"Dear XYZ, we couldn't reach you at your phone. Please call back so we can fix your issue"
FUCK YOU WTF! ARE YOU GUYS RETARDED? READ YOUR FUCKING INCIDENTS! MOTHERFUCKING CUNTS!11 -
Had this with a relative. His laptop wasn't turning on, with or without charger so he brought it back to the store to fix it. It ran elementary os by the way (detail for later). Then he got it back after a week and we booted it and it had windows 8 installed (wtf indeed). So we called the service desk to ask about it since the issue was a broken charger (!!!). Their reply: oh yeah there was a weird system installed on it so we thought we'd reset it as well for you.
SERIOUSLY, THAT'S NOT YOUR FUCKING JOB!!
He is not tech savvy and he didn't know much about backups so that was literally about one year of work GONE. Yeah, I setup a cloud backup sync thingy for him right after that.7 -
Manager: we use <teaming meeting service> for all of our team meetings.
Me: cool I'll go to the site and join the meeting.

Me: [not really surprised, tries firefox]
Service: I need java to run me.
Me: I have java.
Firefox: yeah but I don't.
Me: why?
Firefox: 'cause we're phasing it out.
Me: [looking for some kind of plugin]
Internet: [tldr Firefox can only use 32bit java if it must use java]
Me: [installs 32 bit java]
Firefox: nah.
Me: waht?
Firefox: [covering its eyes] I can't see anything
Me: it's right there.
Firefox: ...
Me: ...
Firefox: ...
Me: ... please?
Firefox: ...nah...
Me: [checks service supported browsers]
Service: on Linux: ONLY FIREFOX
Me: .... fuck...
Me: [downloads Linux-32 distro]

Fuck Off As A Service(FOAAS) provides a modern, RESTful, scalable solution to the common problem of telling people to fuck off.

Finally , a usefuckingful service.2 -
Dev checked in code (I suspect purposely not inviting me on the code review invite) saying he "fixed" the authentication bug in the web service.
Um no, like I told you last week, the authentication error is because the load balancer wasn't passing the user's authentication to IIS.
If I didn't overhear him telling a user "Still getting the error? I don't know, we might have to re-write that service", he might have gotten away with it.
Me: "Wait, that doesn't sound right. If I hit the server directly, authentication works. Its an issue with the load balancer, not the service"
Dev: "Admin said the load balancer is fine and it has to be the service."
Me: "I don't buy it. IIS is returning the authentication error, not the service."
Dev: "I added exception handling and nothing is being logged. Must be something in the service configuration."
Me: "No, IIS performs the authentication, not the service. I explained that last week, remember?"
Dev: "Oh yea. What changes do we need to make to the service?"
<my blood pressure starts to spike>
Me: "None. Give me a sec.."
<we have other apps on the same server farm that work just fine, so I re-configure the service pool settings to match theirs>
Me: "See, now going through the load balancer, the service works fine. For some reason, the admin had our service set up differently."
Dev: "OK, I'll let the users know the service is fixed."
Me: "Service was never broke and I'm not leaving it in its current state. In the morning I'll talk to the admin and see what he can do to fix."6 -
When you find a tool / service online, go to the pricing page and it has a "get a quote now" button.
You can already tell its a massive rip off, but they feel the need to explain to you why.1 -
On a scale of 1-10:
If you own the domain "Google.com" for 15 minutes, all of the traffic will go to your server/hoster.
How bad will you be sued by your service provider?8 -
HP sucks because:
shitty hinges,
shitty build quality,
shitty USB ports,
shitty customer service,
shitty website6 -
Oh Christ.. just been looking for hosting companies here in Belgium to look for sysadmin positions.. one of the fucking companies posted this: "we provide Uptime-as-a-Service"
The fucking cringe!!! Uptime as a service! Everything including the only fucking job a hoster has, keeping shit up and running.. as a service.. fuck!4 -
In a morning 'stand up'.. (SM = Scrum Master, PO = Product Owner)
SM: "Sprint item 42399 ... Did you work with Ken on getting the price service ready for deployment?"
Me: "No, I worked with Dave on the service bus queue changes. Its there in the notes"
SM: "Ha ha...no...right there...it reads working with Ken."
Me: "Those are your notes. You re-assigned the ticket to yourself yesterday."
SM: "Oh...um...you told me you were working with Ken when I asked."
Me: "I'm really sorry, I don't remember you asking or me saying anything about changes to the price service. All the documentation I have is for the service bus."
PO: "I'm so confused, Ken was pulled off another project to work on the Price service for you guys."
Me: "I never talked to Ken, I have no idea whats going on. Did you tell Ken he had to make changes to the Price service?"
SM: "No..I never...um...well....yea...this card was blocked and the service needed to be approved and deployed."
Me: "Ken's changes were for the purchasing service two weeks ago and already deployed. The card is already marked as Done"
<PO rubs his face>
PO: "Good god...do I still need to be here?"
Me:"Um...no? Sorry?"
<PO walks out>
Me: "What changes did you tell Ken to make?"
SM: "Whatever the card says...see the price service."
Me: "Scroll down...see..price related to the service bus, not price service."
SM:"Work with Dave on getting this card closed, OK?"
Good fracking grief. Your ego is so brittle and so eager to look like a boss.
I did my job, you fracking kiss ass. I'm fracking sure when you re-assigned the ticket you told my boss you "had to" because I was falling behind in the sprint.3 -
A personal memo to all developers on devRant:
* Assume every external line of code, (including every service you consume) is an unreliable crock of flaming shit. These services can and will fail in the most glorious ways. Write your code to be resilient, and ASSUME FAILURE of dependencies. Even if it's your own team writing the other service.
Heard in a meeting today: "Your team's service outage is going to cause my service to corrupt the database!"
Response I wanted to give: "No, you asshat, my service outage is a normal part of living with microservices. Your app should have been smart enough to recognize the failure."9 -
Thinking of making a calculator app that is implemeted with microservices.
Like multiplication service calls addition service, and power service calls multiplication service, and expression service can call all of those, etc.
Next I need to figure out how to add AI to it12 -
Whe you build a backend service that handled 50k concurrent users. But you are forced to integrate this third party service which can handle 500 concurrent users.4
-
team downloading a library to solve in 12 hours problems I could code myself out in 15 minutes, complication as a service at its best.5
-
FUCK YOU LENOVO AND FUCK YOUR CUSTOMER SERVICE
They "repaired" the hinge and it locked solid three days after I got it back.
My faithful companion has been reduced to such a terrible state :(
I had to remove the screen, there was significant stress on the panel.
...I guess I could make a server or something out of it?11 -
Me: please return http code 202 in your http service.
My collegue: ok.
After one hour...
Me: you are returning 200, I told you 202. Let me see the code:
OMFG she was writing the string "202" in the response body!!!
I do not know how to escape from all of this shit.1 -
I maintain a service that people are billed yearly for. A bunch of users just requested a new feature that will require me to build a completely new backend and change a bunch of things that will require a full rewrite of a couple different aspects of the service. I'm both excited and scared. Wish me luck.5

Hmm internet connection is down. Check isp status page...no issues. Wait 50mins on phone to get to support, where they tell me there is a known issue, reported 4 hours ago. After call check isp status page...no issues
Is AWS selling status pages as a service now?5 -
When the company spamming is also the service provider but fails to gracefully handle requests on their service 😒6
-
"Let‘s make a service where the users can enter all of their secrets and sensitive data so that we can warn them if that data has been leaked elsewhere"
What could possibly go wrong?2 -
Issue reporter:
Feed from external service provider is overwriting the wrong things, pls fix
Resolution:
Service provider is sending duplicate unique IDs, you need to get with them to discuss
Service provider response:
This is a *RE-USABLE UNIQUE ID* . . . The bottom line is you should not use this UNIQUE ID as a primary key.21 -
I just found a new WhatsApp Crash Exploit. Full denial of service right there. An attacker could send a message to a Chat (be it private Chat or group Chat) and everyone who receives the message has no chance of starting WhatsApp again. It crashes and won't restart.
Tested on latest version on Samsung Galaxy S6 and S8. Don't know if it works on other versions but I am pretty sure it does. (It's midnight here, noone online to test)
The fun thing is, I knew this Bug for a long time but when I last tested it, nothing happened. Which means this Crash is only possible because someone at WhatsApp programmed a new Feature...19 -
FYI rambox users: My pull request got merged and as of version 0.6.0 devRant is now one of the pre-configured services 🎉1

Cannot run one service which is depended on by another before that service is instanced because everything within the cotainer is asynchronous 👍1

Because everything should be a managed-service somewhere in the internet.

I am having a massive anti-Microsoft day since they announced they are killing Groove music streaming service.
Funny how there is so much shit going on in the world and I'm here sulking over a music service...
😪19 -
@Fast-Nop This one's for you, buddy. Took me all freaking day to figure out how to avoid unsafe-inline when registering a service worker. XD7

I need to integrate with service A. There is an issue.
Me: Service A, we have an issue. We don't get any errors but the final entity doesn't get created
ServiceA: Ahh, I see. Since you didn't get any errors, try escalating this to Service B - we are using it and they might see what's wrong.
Ticket: *closed*
Me: Service B, we have an issue and ServiceA says I should talk to you.
ServiceB: Ahh, I see. I don't see any errors in our logs. Try escalating this to Service C
Ticket: *closed*
Me: Service C, we have an issue and Service B says I should talk to you.
ServiceC: How do you send the request to us?
Me: I don't. Service B does.
ServiceC: I see. I don't see any requests coming from them. Talk to Service B
Ticket: *closed*
Me: Service B, Service C says you don't send a request. Please have a look.
<...>
Each ticket takes 2-3 days to be noticed.
My fuse tripped there and I addressed this ping-pong situation in the mail thread with mgmt in it. ServiceA hid behind the "it's not our service, we only provide self-service tools" wall. So, again, I'm left out there to dance this corporate polka...7 -
I am at Lenovo service center to bring back my laptop after replace of motherboard (they replaced because card reader not working). Ohh. I checked again and it's not yet working (illiterate technician)...

Waiting for 1 hour..

Meanwhile I see they are outsourcing their screen , monitor, scanner etc. From dell,acer... Ohh how can they prove they are better...

Okay!now hit me hard a person came here for service and without even booting they concluded the windows inside laptop is pirated🤔😌2 -
Seems like everything on android is a "hack" or temporary solution, thanks to google .
Now how the fuck should i create a custom SMS inbox when:
1) i can't run the SMS broadcast reciever in a background service(because background services are deprecated )
2)message SMS reciever in a foreground service ,because this service is not fucking foreground! when the app is cleared from the recents , it shows the service as running, but on recieving the next message , the service dies??wtf?? i think its something related to processes
the app needs to detect a message instantly because some messages are needed to be sent to server the moment they are recieved :/5 -
I am now a free man.
I got exempt from the military service by fattening myself up, I've never been happier for failing an exam (the medical exam) 😊
Now comes the time for extreme dieting and finding a job abroad to gtfo outta third world9 -
Had to ring the UK tax office, have to pay a sizeable amount by 31st Jan, but I have spent any savings on essential living based shit. I was dreading the call, but best to do it before 31st or you get an instant £100 fine. Well I was totally shocked to find a really lovely lady on the other end, she was most helpful and not like the cunt I got a few years back. It just goes to show that two people doing the same job with the same procedures and outcomes, 1 can be a complete cunt and the other kind and compassionate. Moral, there’s no need to be a cunt.

Why do I program everything myself in C, even a rest service? By writing everything yourself in C you make simple things complex to make complex things simple.
Writing a rest service for example learns you a part of http protocol, how sockets work, how to create a parser (in this case json). Three thing's you would miss if I used python.
On top, your rest service uses WAY lesser resource than written in python for example. Especially for CPU usage.
Allocating and free-ing still often have issues there, but I consider it a skill problem / discipline issue. Not blaming C for that. The rules are clear.12 -
My phone is speed capped to 64 kbit/s download. The only app which loads it's content in under five minutes is DevRant...1

> client paid 10 years in advanced for service

> sorry we can't refund you the unused money if you change service, have a nice day!3 -
So ... We have this century old , "respectable" government postal service that delivers and is the standard postal service on the country...
You buy something online and they send with it... 2 weeks...
You buy something online and they use private service... 1 day...
Yeah, fuck you too.10 -
To provide excellent customer service and provide extra services, we collect your personal information.
Bullshit. You're not using my personal information for customer service, otherwise your call center wouldn't suck so badly.3 -
I want to switch to an encrypted email service. My question, what if the service provider suddenly decides to close down the email service.
I feel like it's too risky to move all my emails to them.5 -
been trying to figure out why the result of a linux service wasn't updating after 30 min i noticed i was calling 'systemctl start service' instead of 'systemctl restart service' FUCK MAH MUTHAFUCKING LIFE 😊2

Ok, so I have turned off all shit of Windows Update, and somehow, Windows is updating all apps, and even trying to update itself.
WHY???????????????????5 -
You know what a payment feature that is “so secure even the correct user can’t use it” is called?
FUCKING BROKEN. Jesus Christ I hate it when “customer service” people are trying to sound smart.1 -

TIL that Apple has a self-service repair service. They'll ship parts to you, and you can download their official device repair manuals to fix your device yourself.
“Self Service Repair is intended for individuals with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. If you are experienced with the complexities of repairing electronic devices, Self Service Repair provides you with access to genuine Apple parts, tools, and repair manuals to perform your own out-of-warranty repair. Follow these steps to perform a variety of out-of-warranty repairs for iPhone and Mac, such as display replacements.”

I'm thinking of starting a service of creating WordPress sites for people.

That awkward moment when you phone IKEA Costumer Service to ask for the buCode that is used in their API to see product status in stores.
First I spoke to a salesperson and almost had to explain what an API is. The next person understood (after a while) that it is a 3-digit code that identifies the store.
And yes, I am from Sweden. 😂2 -
- A girl asks on FB how to deal with a problem in her Windows computer: the system is asking her to introduce the serial key.
- I comment her the possibility of using Linux in case her use cases are simple enough (web, music, videos).
- First reactions are even enthusiastic, some people who had good experiences join the thread to express their delight with Linux.
- Then a guy arrives to tell us how irresponsible we are, telling a poor girl who does not even know how to introduce the serial key... to use Linux (a super complex system!)
- So I tell the guy that Windows is not simple at all, and that most of the times, people just rely o knowing someone else with higher expertise than them, who always end up paying the price of solving the problems caused by Windows, so the users don't really feel how painful is Windows compared to other systems.
- The girl, who was enthusiastic at first, and seems to be not very bright, to say the least, completely misunderstands my answer. She interprets that I'm insulting the poor guys that act as IT service for free, and calls me a "know-all/smartass" (those words are not even close to their Spanish counterpart on pushing down people who know stuff, we are experts on that there, we didn't loose an empire in the 17th century by respecting the wise ones).
This is, in part, why I stopped helping those dumbasses 18 years ago. I forbid myself to learn anything new about Windows (at user level) so I couldn't help these ungrateful and ignorant people who don't make any effort to learn anything by themselves.19 -
How the fuck does TypeScript still not have service worker support? Seriously, it's just a typings file. People have written that typings file. They would just have to include it in the lib collection shipped with the compiler. Yeah, it would have DOM calls intermixed with the SW api, but frankly, having the typings for a set of calls you can't use is infinitely better than missing them for a set of calls you can.
The relevant issue is 5 years old btw.7 -
Hey devs, really need some help here. This is driving me crazy...
We're currently taking issues from the company via mail. We've got a group mail that goes to the three of us at the IT department. Problem is, colleagues just forward customers emails without event trying to help, which means that we get stupid issues like "I can't sign in", and no further information. We're currently using Jira, and I was thinking perhaps we can set up a Jira Service Desk? Then we could have an internal help desk where issues could be submitted, and require some important fields, and perhaps add a checklist. Have you had any experience with Service Desk? Do you think it would be a good idea to have a "normal" person have an account there as well to filter out the normal "Have you tried restarting your computer" stuff? Is it suited for non-developers?
Any other ideas?
Yeay, messy question, but I'm fucking desperate...5 -
I was one of the early adapters to devrant. And I qualified for my free stickers ages ago. But thanks to the useless South African postal service, I still havent received my stickers over a month down the line :( I have so much sadness in me because I NEED these stickers!4
-
I hate having to deal with our IT service desk. Every time it takes enormous energy to get to the right people and make them understand that no, you are not an idiot, but you actually have a technical issue.
Sure thing they do have a few competent nice folks there too I've gotten to know over time and they indeed have to deal with a ton of dumb non-tech savvy idiots on a daily basis. However, if my job title mentions "software" and "engineer" they should at least assume I'm an idiot in tech. Or something. Every single time I need to open a ticket, even for the simplest "add x to env y", I need to quadruple check that the subject line is moron-friendly because otherwise they would take every chance to respond "nah we can't do that", "that's not us", or "sry that's not allowed". And then I would need to respond, "yes you do:) your slightly more competent colleague just did this for us 2 weeks ago".
Now you might imagine this is on even another level when the problem is complex.
One of our internal apps has been failing because one of the internal APIs managed by a service desk team responds a 500 status code randomly but only when called with a specific internal account managed by another service desk team.
(when I say "managed by", that doesn't mean they maintain it, it just mean they are the only ones who would have access to change something)
Yesterday I spent over a fucking hour writing a super precise essay detailing the issue, proving a million times it's not on our end and that they need to fix it. Now here is an insight to what beautiful "IT service" our service desk provides:
1) ticket gets assigned to a "Connectivity Engineer" lady
2) few hours later she responds and asks me to give her the app and environment IDs and grant her access to those
(naturally everything in my email was ignored including these two IDs)
3) since the app needs to be in prod for the issue, I make a copy isolating the failing part and grant her access to the original "for reference" and the copy to play with
4) few hours later I get an email from the env that some guy called P made changes to the actual app, no changes to the copy
(maybe they immediately fixed the app even though I asked them to only touch the copy)
I also check the env and the live app had been shared with another 2 people giving them editing rights:)
5) another few hours pass and the lady responds that she had been chatting with P (no mention of who tf that guy is) and that P has a suggestion that might work and I should test it, "please see screen shot" for details:
These motherfuckers sent me a fucking screenshot of the env config file where "P has edited a few parameters" that might help. The screenshot had a 16 line part of the config json with a bunch of IDs and Base64 params which HE EDITED LOCALLY.
Again, because I needed a few iterations to realise what I've just witnessed:
These idiots modified some things in the main app (not the copy) for hours. Then came to the conclusion that the config needs some IDs and params updated. They downloaded the config json. Edited it locally. Did not fucking upload it back to the main or test app. Did not test it live. Did not CC in or direct the guy with changes to me. Did not send me the modified config file. Did not even paste the new IDs into the email. But TOOK A FUCKING SCREENSHOT OF THE MODIFIED FILE AND SENT THAT SHIT TO ME. And then had the audacity to ask me to test it when they had access to it and that's literally their fucking job.
I had to compare the fucking screenshot to the live config file and manually type in the changes.
And no, it still doesn't work. And Now I have to get back to them showing it still fails the same way but I just can't deal with these people. Fuck. Was hoping by the time I write it all down it'd be better, and it does feel a bit better, but I still need to get this app fixed. And I can only do it through these... monkeys. I just can't. Talking to these people drains my life energy... I'm just sad. -
GitHub is currently having service issues. Nooooo. This sucks. And it reminds me of how much my company and others rely on GitHub to get work done.10

I'm planning on stopping my mail server but I don't know to which service I should move, I have a custom domain that I need to link, for example Google cloud apps where I can forward emails, but of course I don't want to use Google.
Any recommendations?13 -
I have heard that StarTech's customer service is on point... But this is something refreshing and a very surprising beginning of my birthday!1

After the fucking graduating day, got Unix stickers, man I thought I would never get it, they reposted it with change in address . Wonderful service.5

My ex-boss used to BELIEVE that being registered to a service makes a partner with the service provider.
So if I were a devRant supporter, I am a devRant partner.4 -
FUCK SPAM !
If you are like me and register to many services online and get spammed with spam (duh) and want to know which services is selling your data , you can register with an email like this :
let's say your email is johndoe@gmail.com
and want to register to Service you can put johndoe+service@gmail.com and mails will still reach johndoe@gmail.com but appear as To : johndoe+service@gmail.com so then you can rant about how Service is selling your data.
credits to reddit.2 -
"Our Data Service comes PRE-P0WN'D"
Those SHIT-FOR-BRAINS data service providers GLOAT that their data can be natively integrated into most BI platforms, no code required.
How? Because they will EXPOSE THE ENTIRE FUCKING THING ON THE INTERNET.
LITERALLY.
UNAUTHENTICATED URL WITH THE ENTIRE DATASET.
STATIC. WON'T EVER FUCKING CHANGE.
NO VPN REQUIRED. NO AUTHENTICATION HEADERS. NO IN-TRANSIT ENCRYPTION.
"It is safe! No one will know the secret token that is a parameter in the url"
BLOODY BYTE BUTTS, BATMAN! IT IS A FUCKING UNAUTHENTICATED URL THAT DOES NOT REQUIRES RENEWAL NOR A VPN, IT WILL LEAK EVENTUALLY!
That is the single fucking worst SELF-P0WN I have ever seen.
Now I know why there are fucking toddlers "hacking" large scale databases all over the globe.
Because there are plenty of data service providers that are FUCKING N00BS.4 -
"In the beginning, God created Heavens and Earth. It was supposed to have been done in a week, but He had problems with some SaaS service providers and it ended up taking several billion years"
My one-week-task haven't got to a billion years (yet), but it was EXCLUSIVELY due to SaaS providers going bananas and not solving SHIT with their own shitty problem-making solutions.16 -
I received a few XSD schemas from service provider, this have literally: Table1, Table2, etc... Table21. and without any documentation.
Should I insult provider devs on email?10 -
REST service documentation translated in italian language.

Today was the first time I used WebWorkers. I loaded it with a hyphenator script because fucking Chrome is still not able to do hyphenation on its own. For the main thread I wrote an injectable Angular service as a wrapper and to enqueue hyphenation work.
So far it works pretty smooth and quickly.
Have you used WebWorkers before? What for?3 -
I've been in a fucking chat with a Verizon customer service rep for 45 fucking minutes....
Talking about everything under the moon to help the man out from having to do legitimate work. We've talked about phone preference, what phone's we have, what we want, favorite features, ect.
It's fucking hilarious and I'm genuinely entertained right now.
Glad to know I'm helping someone out.
Edit: I was honestly sad when I had to end it so I could eat before my food got ice cold lol3 -
Customer service my ass. I wouldn't even call it service. All you could do is check if it's working now. Of course it's working... I've just told you it's fucking working 2 minutes then inaccessible for fucking 10.
And when I tell you that your service had began to loose quality in the past few months you just sit there in FUCKING SILENCE. MOTHERFUCKER JUST TELL ME THAT YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT... OR SORRY... OR GO FUCK YOURSELF, NOT MY JOB... I DON'T FUCKING CARE JUST DON'T SIT THERE IN SILENCE UNTIL I HAVE ENOUGH AND HANG UP... I WASN'T EVEN SHOUTED TO HIM. I was disappointed but not angry... Not until you decided to just ignore me, fucktard...
Needless to say just when I hung up it stopped working again. -.-4 -
I really really want to change jobs and pursue being a game dev.
I am so tired of our company kissing our clients' asses, out of fear they might leave, making the developer work an extra mile without the appropriate salary for the extra work, which now I realize why we have alot of sh*ty projects.
I think there is a clear line between customer service and being suckups.
:(4 -
If your customer service is so bad that people talk about trying to use the occult to get in touch with you, your company is shit.
Dev related cause I only want to talk to the customer service because the api docs are that fucking bad. -
One of these days....
Where you want to do a tiny task
....
And suddenly an explosion nukes every service, related service and dependant service.
Chain reaction. Yaaaayyy........
(ancient prometheus node lead to an snapshot error, snapshot error made the migration tool unhappy, migration tool unhappy meant that my task failed - updating prometheus meant checking every target, exporter and so on...
Fuckity fuck it''s gangbang time.)1 -
Ok so riddle me this. The service for an application were required to run to send clients insurance through (as per government regulations) was working fine all day working super fast. Rare but awesome. I get a call one hour prior to the office closing (I don't work weekdays) and I am told that all of a sudden insurance isn't sending.
My mind goes right to this fu**ing process. Sure enough it's stopped on the server. Well shit ok. I click start..... Nothing. I kill it from task manager.... Nothing. "SERVICE CAN'T START"
I'm like ok that's fine let's check event logs.... Nothing. No problem let's just run it not in a service container and see if there's an error. NOPE IT DOESNT LET ME.
Okok so that's cool let's just try reinstalling the app. NOPE CAN'T DO THAT WITHOUT RESTARTING THE WHOLE FUCKING SERVER WHICH BRINGS THE ENTIRE OFFICES MANAGEMENT SYSTEM OFFLINE BECAUSE THIS FUCKING APP NEEDS TO BE ON THE SAME GODDAMN SERVER.rant sysadmin medical why me fuck microsoft windows fuck microsoft server why windows server service2 -
Project manager: "What is a micro service? I'm dating a girl and she mentioned it and I want to impress her."
Me: "Well, you have monolithic services which tend to serve many different functions whereas a micro service tends to serve a single function or a few related functions. They are usually easier to scale and can be optimized to be faster. Still, right tool for the job."
Project manager: "Oh nice! So I can ask her 'Hey, want to see my micro service? It's quick and scalable.'"

He's leaving this week. I'm going to miss him though.
Seriously though, in that context, would scalability mean you're bringing friends?4 -

FUCK CUSTOMER SUPPORT
I live next to a province road so for things like internet more parties are involved then on a usual neighborhood street. 5 years ago I was asking about fibre internet since every household in a 8km area from my house has a fiber connect (except those next to a province road). They told me to contact them if a road construction would happen so they could do it simultaneously.
Today I thought lets contact them again since a complete road overhaul is gonna take place in the coming 6 months. They said that I've to contact them before those plans are made public otherwise they cannot jump in and do their work as well.
How would I inform a company of plans that are not public so I don't know about?1 -
Service status pages that poorly reflect actual service status are so annoying. Ex. GitHub is having a lot of latency issues with processing updates and like 5 people in my office noticed it while their status page still says everything is fine.
This isn't to explicitly call out GitHub since many service status pages behave like this, but it definitely shows a general weakness in these health checks. I've seen similar issues with tons of services, web hosts, etc. Monitoring is definitely hard but will hopefully keep getting better.1 -
The Angular ng-WAT talk: https://youtu.be/M_Wp-2XA9ZU
Most hilarious dev talk I have ever watched! This guy shows the common frustration of reading confusing API docs with even more confusing terminology. Hahaa!
"You have a factory, which is a service and you have a service which is a service. Both have Providers.. and when you write a Factory.. as your service.. you actually write a Provider.. which returns a Factory.. which is basically.. a Service!". WAT3 -
Due to a service window, we were requested by customer to set up a separate instance of the same web application so they could keep working.
The separate instance was set up and all parties were informed.
Customer and project manager complain that people are still using the old instance, to which I replied I sent an email informing which instance should be used.
Their response: "You wrote to use the new instance, but you didn't write NOT to use the old one."1 -
Had a task of service discovery, went through following phases:
1. UDP broadcast
2. Wait why not Bonjour?
3. JmDNS for desktop works great
4. Android NSD on Lollipop, this is easy
5. Kitkat WTF..!! Why did you put it there when it's so buggy.
6. Replaced Android NSD with JmDNS and it's great
7. Network switching on Android... done
8. Wait how are others doing it.. JmmDNS.. awesome.. fuck not working...
9. Read mDNSJava is much faster... replace JmDNS.. why haven't they uploaded parent pom on repo
10. mDNSJava freezing my Android device... revert to JmDNS
11. Let's see if it works with Wifi Direct.... Come on why aren't you working...
12. UDP broadcast it is 😢2 -
So, we are having a SaaS service for people where they can build X stuff. It is all fine as long as you are using basic things there, no complex cases and so on. Even on some complex - it does work just fine.
Here's the rant itself:
The production server throws us errors every 5-10 minutes that something broke and fails to do job X. At first we were all hands on deck fixing it ASAP to make it stable to later realise that most of these cases were users doing stupid shit. Then we began to fix the core issues rather than chasing every single issue there is (costs are important you know) - funny enough, we get few support requests a week and our 1h response time + 24h fix time usually buys us that customer and allows t o leave a great impression.
So all in all, bugles production is good but great support - is way better. Users can deal with issues especially if they are experimenting there but when they need answers - you'd better give it to them.1 -

All my homies hate Antimalware Service Executable.

Status: Got off hour+ long call with provider teir2 tech support because their "sync service" isn't syncing. "It's all cloud controlled" they tell me. Whatever.
It does have the ability to install a Windows service to do the needful! 🎉
However the program that does the actual syncing is the "launcher" application, and the service's only job is to tell the launcher to run. 🤦♂️
Their assumption is that there will be a user that gets smacked in the face with a UAC prompt when they first log in and just shrug it away. Which is the Launcher application.
The sync service is not capable of running the sync application without a desktop session I guess?
MOTHERTRUCKERS do you understand what the point of a Windows Service is?!?
I tried relating this situation to how Windows Update works: It will update whenever the fuck it wants without the user doing anything because of the Service, and you only configure the service with the Control Panel/Settings App. You don't need the Control Panel/Settings App running in order for Windows Update to work, but it's there for status info and configuration.
Anyways, this software does not do that. It apparently *requires* both the service AND the launcher program running in order to work. Not work properly, to work *at all*.
Anyways, It's installed on a computer that's not normally logged into, but is always on (where other "always needs to be running" programs live). Normally the hackaround would be to launch the program via Scheduled Task.
This program apparently does not want to run as a scheduled task, or the Task Scheduler is being stupid and can't figure out "Hey, it's time to run this program. Do it!". Naturally it runs if told manually.
The fact that I'm even doing this at all is stupid, but even more infuriating is that it's just not working unattended. You know, what the service should be doing. But no, the service runs happily all alone, doing nothing of note, while Task Scheduler sucks its stick running OneDrive installer but not the launcher program.
Pluckin' donuts...2 -

My team was asked to point to a mock service in our QA env. Standard procedure is to copy the line in our QA property file that has the service URL, comment one out, and change the other to the mock service. Then, push the code and deploy to QA.
What did someone do? He didn't touch the property file. He found where we were defining the configuration for our http requester, removed the property reference, and HARD CODED the mock URL.
Wait, it gets better. The mock service does not function the same way the real service does. We need to send an additional query param to the mock service (that has a value already being sent in a header) so they modified ANOTHER file where the actual request is being made.
He made the changes, deployed to QA, and didn't check in any code.
What is going to happen next time when we deploy to QA with the latest code? Oh look, we'll be pointing to the real service again.
I explained this to my architect, and included that this messed up mock service they were calling is our 2nd mock service (no idea why they made a new one) and he simply deleted the stupid 2nd mock service. Screw that!
And...now requests to QA don't work 😂 -
While a precaching service worker can grossly improve the performance of a SPA, it definitely doesn't improve the speed of development when introduced between the dev's browser and the app to be debugged.3

I am working on a freelance project for a software dev startup. The api service endpoints given to me is so full errors that you can boldly say it's zero percent tested and you'll be correct. The project was meant to last for a week but now it's going to a month due to the errors I have encountered while working with the given API service, so more like a back and forth wait for an update kind of thing. I am close to done building the client but yes they cannot test my last update because someone updated the login endpoint which now returns 500 internal server error. I really want to vent out my frustration to this company without loosing them to the project but honestly i don't know how to do it.
Edit: Just for a side note, about the relationship this client is my former company.3 -
Our ISP asked if I was satisfied with their service. I told them that it's okay, but some of our computers don't have enough powerful network card, and they can't use the internet on maximum speed, and they said that they could see it, too. WTF? I knew that the ISP's router is not the most secure thing, but it has a remote mode, which if of course OFF, and they still can see this, and maybe even more. Monitoring your traffic is a thing, but a home network should be private...2
-
Okay, if I understand correctly, if you want your website to be RGPD compliant, you must wait for user opt-in before storing anything to their device.
Maybe I'm asking myself too much questions but, how exactly does this work for a PWA ? Should you ask user for permission before starting a service worker and/or before caching any content ? If so, what if the user refuses the authorization ? The app is broken ? Or it just fallback to good old http browsing if it's server-rendered ?3 -
So we had a service provider which would provide climate info. The service is paid for. Then suddenly we started getting irrational or no data. When asking the provider, he said their job is to provide the api and they're not responsible for the quality of the data which apparently comes from other places. So we basically pay for an api which we could have done ourself....2

RavenDB was by far the worst document storage "solution" I have ever had the displeasure of working with.
- Loading data crashed the service.

- Monitoring applications crashed the service.

- Sometimes it just worked for no good reason.
- Often it broke for completely random reasons.11 -

Service based companies and Nepotism
In India, most IT companies hires their own family members. Even they promote their own family members. One of the my friend worked as dev he found that mostly his co workers are relatives of founder or managers. He told me that he understand if they get hired from some kind of references but that's not case here. Even HR is also family member of manager/founder. Most of this guys don't know any language. Even they don't have any kind of professionalism
Imagine that working on companies where your co-workers and HR is family members of managers and founder. Where you find help because everyone will against you because all are family members.
they deduct PF of workers who are not relatives and never pay tax to goverment. In india, most developers are desperate to get job because that's what education system and society taught them.
Hope startup culture will kill all these shitty companies1 -

Started my very first (summer) job as an IT agent in customer service for my city less than two weeks ago and finally moving out from the formations to answer the phone alone.
I must've listened to around 30 calls and already there's stories I could make tales of.
I now understand the job of customer service. -
A user didn’t remember creating an account and didn’t understand why they received an “account created” email. Best case: this person just forgot. Worst case: someone impersonated them.
I look up this person’s order history and see only one order in the database. The account was created right after the order. Order was for $10k. I’m thinking, oh shit was there a fraudulent payment?!
I dig deeper and see it’s actually for a membership renewal. And our records are showing a birthdate for 1937. Now I’m thinking, ok I have a high roller who is very old. So I have to be REALLY careful about my response to this person.
I manage to reproduce the scenario and…it’s totally user error. The person just forgot they created an account. I’m letting customer service handle the correspondence for this. Sorry CS. -

Lost my changes twice now. First time was my own fault. Was in a hurry to pick up my son from daycare so I checked in my code and locked my computer before the code was actually checked in. So today when I took "Get latest" somehow my last code from yesterday vanished. So, I rewrote everything, but now there was some problem with service references, and building the solution failed. A colleague had a look into it, but he couldn't resolve the problem neither. Instead he accidentally made an undo changes on my code, so now my code is gone again. And the solution still doesn't build. I'm just a *leetle* frustrated right now :(3

An Italian provider in his webservice documentation defines a date (birthDate) as string. Why ?
I discovered the format provided is d-m-Y, my database store it as Y-m-d and my users prefer d/m/Y (as many Italians).7 -
WTF Windows?
If you call the API function to lookup the name of a service it expects a buffer and the size of the buffer.
If the supplied size is smaller than the service name it returns the number of characters (excluding the null-terminator) of the service name.
You can allocate a buffer for the service name and call the function again to receive the service name.
Except now Windows wants to know the size of the buffer including null terminators.
That took me a moment to figure out. -
So. Question: is service-oriented architecture a web/network "thing" or would it take actually be of some benefit to an installed app?
I ask because we build on a framework that, for the most part, has pretty good interfaces and is specific on how things need to be implemented in order to work. However there are (g)rumblings within sad frameworks working group that they are going to switch over to "Service-oriented Architecture" which to me just sound buzzwordy. We are an installed desktop app.5 -
Ranters, I need help
Does anyone know how can I run something as a systemd service and still have access to the "console" - the input and output of the program, when I need it?

How much it really sucks to convince everyone around you about the idea you want to implement, but it cannot because the client is not happy and if he is not happy the management is also not happy. The following piece of advice will be for those aspiring for an IT service desk position:
When companies are looking to hire service desk agents, they're primarily looking for socially skilled people with strong communicative skills, rather than primarily technically skilled people. When I first joined the IT world, I went on different interviews for that position and across all of them there was one truth: all the interviewers were eyeballs-focused on my social and communication skills and a mere thin layer of technical skills was required (depending on how technical the service desk). In fact, I immediately got aggressively dismissed twice for two of those when I filled in a Myers-Briggs personality test according to my Sheldon-type personality (selfish, condescending etc). Conversely, when I applied for a new position and I faked that test into answering everything focused positively on the social aspect, I was an immediate top candidate.
Here's a definition from the ITIL Foundation course, chapter Service Management: Because of how lateral the function of the service desk has become today (not only used to solve technical issues, but also company-wide issues), the most important and valued skills when hiring a service desk agent are fully focused on empathy and soft skills and none of those are technical skills. This is because the service desk has people that are the front window of your company and thus you can't make social mistakes as to protect your company's reputation. That risk has to be minimized and you need the ideal people. The people who in fact solve the technical problems are behind a back-office and they are contacted by the service desk agents.
In the beginning, when I did my first service desk job, I also thought: "Oh, I'm going to have to convince them I'm this technical wizard". In the end I got hired for being able to explain technology in human language and because in the interview I successfully communicated and explained ideas to both the team manager and the CEO, not because I knew what goes on inside a computer. This is a very important distinction.
My friends have also been in service desk positions and ironically they were the most successful when they were empathetic slimeballs (saying: "of course, anything for you" while not meaning it, constantly making jokes), rather than people with integrity (those got fired for telling the customer they were wrong while being unfriendly).
I hope this helps.8 -

i want to create a service that periodically logs in to a 3rd party service to check if anything has changed in their account, then send a message via firebase to notify the user who's account has been changed.
can you recommend any program/hosting/server that would be ideal for this?
i prefer dart (because i built the frontend in flutter, but i'd use most any language).
i'd prefer not to pay for a dedicated server because of price, so if i could just create processes that run every hour or so, that would be ideal.2 -
Feminism is Harmful to Society
Feminism may be defined as an activity aimed at preserving women’s rights and interests. The initial objective of the movement was to aid women play an equal role in a mainly male society. However, with time, the idea of equality of sexes has transformed into a battle where feminists intend to outdo men. Such toxic metamorphoses have made feminism dangerous to the society.
The ideology of the modern feminism falsely positions women as victims. Women, just as men, are capable of making competent decisions in accordance with their wishes individually and do not require extra advantages. Treating females as the oppressed gender encourages women to put the blame for any intellectual or physical challenge either at work or study on a male will. Such impact of feminism leads to the formal recognition of women as a victimized class and triggers a shift in the legal framework towards one of the sexes.
Unfortunately, men have to face one of the most unpleasant effects of feminism. The idea popularized by some feminists is that the latter are the worthless accessories in a woman’s life. Radical feminism has affected the law system. For instance, after separation, fathers are regarded as sponsors of their children. The incapability to fulfill the obligation leads to severe implications such as the loss of the driver’s license and examination of income tax return. On the contrary, there is no requirement for the mothers even to provide fathers with access to the children.
Finally, feminism badly affects families. With time, the initial principles of feminism were lost. Radical transformations of ideology took place in the 1960s and 1970s when the “Women’s Liberation” movement enjoyed vogue. The proponents of the movement approved sexual affairs outside marriage neglecting the core family values. Therefore, the lifestyle promoted by feminists is barely suitable for raising children.
Women have experienced numerous forms of institutionalized discrimination in different times and various cultural environments. This is a bitter but indisputable truth. However, in the race for the revenge, feminism has radicalized and deviated from its high aspirations. Modern feminism breeds hatred against men and destroys families thus being harmful to society.

Question:
I want to develop a simple reminders service. People will go online and set a reminder and the service will send an email when the reminder is schedule.
I want to use the simplest stack I can. It will be very simple so I don't want anything complex.
So I need a DB backend, a server to host the web interface so people can set up the reminders, and a background process that send out the emails.
People set up reminders, they are stored in the DB and the process read the reminders every X amount of time and send the emails scheduled in that particular time.
I was thinking about using Firebase (only tried it once in a small chat app for practice). A small web interface stored in a server (which? idk. Heroku, AWS?). And a deamon scheduled to run every half an hour (running where? idk. I have a spare laptop that I can use as server for this purpose or Heroku or any other).
What services (free, or at least free at the beginning) would you use in order to save time and money.
PS: I know Python and Java. But I've worked with PHP (and HTML+CSS). I know next to nothing about JS.11 -
