My partner has zero interest in coding and wants to have a baby, a week ago she started to yell install baby at me. Told her its not the right command. A few days ago she yelled apt-get install baby. Told her there was a user privilege problem. Today she came back with sudo apt-get install baby.
looks like we are going to have to have a baby!18 -
Had an interest in IT security some time ago, so I downloaded some tools to experiment a little and research to get some first hand experience since a lot of the course material we have at work is too vague....
Guess who got a visit from the police 👮
😡16 -
I have the best gf in the world.
She tries to understand what I spend so many hours working on, even though she has little interest in it. She is seriously patient with me and lets me do my thing just because she knows it makes me happy.6 -
Lost interest in work for the day, changed a co-workers upload function to target pornhub.
Now we wait....6 -
Confession.
I am sorry.
I don't know if I am doing the right or the wrong thing.
I never shared devRant with people I know because of three things.
1. I don't want to infect this community with cancerous people.
2. I only have a few friends.
3. People I know have no interest in programming (still in college).16 -
Didn't really have one to speak of. The first time a girl showed any interest in me, I asked her to marry me, and she said yes. That was 34 years ago, and we're still good.😁7
-
I was talking to a few young developers at a Uni today and asked them what areas they worked in/were interested in.
Everyone: (tells their work/ interest)
Mr. Genius : Backend developer.
Me: (Being a Backend developer myself felt interested) Which language do you code in?
Mr. Genius : Firebase
Never have I ever wanted to murder someone until this moment.2 -
BOSCH replied to my job application for java backend engineer
"Thank you for your interest in Robert Bosch d.o.o.."
WOW
"We have reviewed your application..."
YES?
"...and have decided..."
YESS???
"...to move forward with..."
YESSS I CANT BELIEVE I GOT A JOB AT BOSCH
"...other candidates."10 -
Interest matching system...
Just like slack but openly recommending a group to people who have similar thought
Aka, Grouping people by similar thought12 -
Like a bad relationship
Be really excited for the first month or so then once the new car smell starts to fade, lose interest and dump it.3 -
Recruiters in germany try to pick your interest with coding “challenges”. I like the idea but this is actually no challenge at all! 😃20
-
frontend development:
- 10% of the time developing and testing
- 90% regretting their choice in life because of Interest Explorer8 -
I miss the days I actually enjoyed playing games.
6 years of programming later...
I'm always wondering how did they make the game? Once I find out how, I lose interest in the game.
I spend more time reverse engineering/exploiting/modifying the Client of games than actually playing them, more out of curiosity than causing harm.
Am I evil? 😫5 -
YOU FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT!
I have nothing against teaching and showing someone starting in this field how to do things but FOR FUCKS SAKE, PUT INTEREST IN IT, I WON'T DO YOUR FUCKING JOB, I HAVE MY JOB, YO DO YOURS.
Jesus...fucking Christ, these kind of people always get on my nerves.2 -
The startup life culture is probably killing a lot of talent and taking away peace of mind.
Everything is needed
- too fast
- to work well
Forcing people to compromise on personal life and health.
It also takes away the interest to work on something as an interesting problem and makes it feel like "just another job to get finished".5 -
An interest at a young age, countless hours exploring, college, University, portfolio, junior job, promotions, finally you're senior developer - over a decade of hard work paid off...
"You're good with computers, can you fix my toaster?"
💥😳🔫4 -
!Dev but still a work related wtf moment.
A company has lunchtime sessions where people could present their hobbies or interests. All went well until one guy presented about his and his wife's interest in BDSM, complete with props and photos. The sessions were quietly abandoned after that.3 -
Coding gave me a way to express my creativity. It gave me meaning. When I was young I was constantly trying to find what I was good at. It's frustrating because I have one more year of uni doing what doesn't interest me.
Nevertheless, I'm glad I found what I want to do for the rest of my life 🐢.1 -
Was interviewed some 15 years ago while quite fresh out of university. Huge panel of people hammering away with questions so after an afternoon in the room all my fried brain could come up with when they asked if I had any other interest was "...trees..." :)
-
Watched 5 minutes of the worst movie ever made on netflix.
All my lists are updated because of my interest in that bad movie...5 -
I find it quite entertaining how "psychologists" think that people with autism/Asperger have difficulty making eye contact in general. Whenever I talk to fellow engineers, people that I like talking to and feel comfortable with, I look them in the eyes at pretty much the same rate as a regular person would. But the thing is.. looking someone in the eyes expresses interest!14
-
Illustration of every coding project out there. Start with high ambitions and lose interest right before the finish.6

I confess I’m one of those smug people right now who’s never had a Facebook account. Why?
Although I do have privacy concerns, I’m not on Facebook because I truly, genuinely, honestly, legitimately do not give a single flying Monkey’s fuck about what you or anyone else gets up to on your own time.
I don’t care. I have no interest. And I have even less interest in telling others what I’m doing.
I fucking hate people.3 -
Top reason not to be a dev:
If you can't stand it when the computer does EXACTLY what you told it to, and don't have the patience, curiosity, and interest learning how to make it do the thing you wanted in the first place. 🙂1 -
Son: I've done good investment in Bitcoins
Dad: What is the rate of interest in Bitcoins?
Son: There is no such thing called rate of interest in Bitcoins. Bitcoins are virtual currency. It's kind of money itself.
Dad: So you gave money and got back money? It's not called as an investment. It's called getting change!5 -
1. Remove chairs and tables.
2. Limit everyone to two minutes speech time.
3. When everybody got used to stand-up meetings, get down and plank.
Everybody will have a very strong interest in a quick and productive end to any plank-down meeting. 😁4 -
I dont get people, who work in the IT business but does not have a genuine interest in it.
Everything they will do will be bad
They will not learn nice stuff
They will do stuff slowly
They ask stupid questions all the fucking time2 -
Just failed at 4/6 subjects at my uni. And now I have to study subjects I have completely no interest in just to pass. I feel depressed1
-
On a date
... as a strategy to intimidate and show myself as a hacker. It did work and spark interest ❤️4 -
People learning to code who seems to have more interest in that their code works than in why it works. Do yourself a favour and learn something you have an interest in.2
-
That feeling when you get job offers because programming is a mere interest in LinkedIn. I don't even know any advanced languages yet!
Holy fuck I look forward to this career!5 -
One day i type hello world program.
And i was amazed that for the first time someone (something) is doing what i tell it to do.
And that's how i got interest in programming.2 -
I'm trying really hard to fight the feelings, but in the interest of the bottom line... I think I can write this site over from scratch faster than I can fix it.4
-
I could not do anything else. Physics, Chemistry, Biology didn't interest me.
Tried competitve programming, failed miserably.
Tried app dev and server dev, they surprise me with their awesomeness everyday :D1 -
Hit udemy, Google for any new technologies, attend large conferences, and simply spend 30 mins to an hour each day coding in anything new - and of interest.
I have to keep up with the young people, to keep my job/career alive, heh.1 -
Playing guitar and bass is one of my biggest, also weight lifting and videogames. I have not had much time to read books recently, but I do try and keep up with the novels that interest me from time to time.
The rest of my time is spent with my family. I also like going to my friend's ranch to fish and shoot at things. I love ranching, because, well... Texas. -
alright, i give up
i'm just going to have to work the rest of my life
the government takes nearly half of everything you do anyway.
income from your saas? taxed.
risked and stressed earned profits from intraday trading? taxed.
money chilling getting interest in a savings account? taxed.
your 50+ hour work week salary? taxed.
but don't worry, houses start at an affordable 500K
🤡11 -
I just tweeted this. Time and time again, big content fools politicians into thinking their interest is in some possible way in the interest of anything else, and it's disgusting.
-
My dream project is to create "The Machine" just like Finch did in Person of interest or to create the WestWorld Droids.
-
Most recruiters will write they've found my Linkedin profile and read it thoroughly with great interest. I always call their bullshit with this simple line on top of my profile.
-
I made my very first pull request to a project of public interest.
It's just a paragraph in the React docs, but still.
I feel like a useful person.11 -
- have a cool idea
- the idea is way too ambitious
- think about it for a few days
- start coding
- lose interest and never touch it again after 4 days
Every time.4 -
Wow, if this isn't a "Fuck GDPR, making money is our interest if I have ever seen one".
Screenshot is from the Speedtest Apo and yes I also live in the EU.5 -
Nobody, nobody, nobody should accept an office-only position unless they actually want to work in an office. People who actually believe that everyone should go back into the office should be excommunicated from this field. This freedom we have needs to be protected for the best interest of the future.4
-
Hi, I am a recruiter representing awesome projects. It's the next thing after machine learning! You would be crazy not to apply.
But the is a strict requirement: you need to have 69 years of experience in devRant. Please comment if you have serious interest.5 -
Hiding my secret side project that I spend 69% of my free time thinking about and 11% of my free time working on.4
-
Just learned my company says it owns everything I think or build, whether I am on the clock or not. It was in the handbook, not the paperwork I signed, but it says I agree to it if I keep working for them. It even says I cannot show interest in something without their approval. FUCK!13
-
Weirdest morning in a while:
- good morning!
_ good morning
* walk over to colleagues desk to see what he’s working on pure out of interest*
_what do you want?
-nothing just curious
_do you want to fight?
-wtf?
The more i work with fellow developers the more i realize the special kind of people we actually are.8 -
When recruiters try to hire you for a position that you have no experience or interest in... "You write code, right? I know someone you should talk to!"2
-
I recently got interest into web dev and... why isn't HTML + CSS considered art? I keep moving stuff one px to the left, one to the right then back left padding-top :40px, ehh to much, 20px ehh too little 30px ehh lemme just leave it at 40px. It's like when you erase a line on a drawing.1
-
Seriously I don't understand why companies are using Zoom. I still don't get the interest compared to Slack, Google Meet, or Teams20
-
To build a machine as shown in 'Person of interest'.
P.S. If you are hearing Person of Interest for the first time, put it on top of your tv series watchlist. You will not regret it.6 -
Given the interest in @MrMarlin's post yesterday I decided it would be fun to make a binary clock.
Here you go:
https://kyran-gostelow.me/misc/...1 -
Fucking hell. When you go to bed sorta early, but can't stop thinking about your latest project for some fucking reason. So you wake up hours later STILL thinking about it, thus you aren't even sure if you slept at all. Doesn't feel like it. What the fuck? Programming, are you my goddamn love interest or what? Anyone knows the feeling?1
-
My dev days consist on coding shit that I am really not interested in(web design)
What gets me through them is getting to my home office when I can continue to fuck around with Machine Learning, my guitar or the shit that does interest me....
.......also...listening to Nothing But Thieves is about the one thing that keeps me from losing my shit at work...5 -
Major win for the organization arround the world: https://icann.org/news/blog/...
Tldr, Icann rejected the offer by Ethos Capital for the .ORG tld. 🎉5 -
Sneaky robot uprising - just went to the bathroom to check how well Roomba cleaned up and that sneaky little bastard was waiting behind the doors and closed them after me (from outside) and kept sweeping behind the doors for a while. It lost interest eventually and left, but surprised me.2
-
me: * is on Devrant at school*
teacher: what's devrant ?
me: it's where I go to complain about you
teacher: ...
yea. so fun story, my first computer science class I took freshman year where I knew more about programming than the teacher, not to mention most of the people in that class had 0 interest in actually learning computers8 -
The network guy in me screams in agony!
I Just started watching person of interest, and this happens...8 -
How do you deal with working on something that you have absolutely no interest in?
I’m working on financial software, at the moment stuff hay handles invoices etc, and even talking about for more than 2 minutes has be yawning and struggling to keep my eyes open.8 -
I would love to develop true A.I, though one which doesn't want to kill.
Sort of like the machine in Person of interest, something which can be everywhere and acts as a guardian for all.
But ultimately looks after me. -
I am realizing that "We will tell you about the results next week" means "YOU should contact us next week to prove your interest" in the HR language.
What else is there that is subtle and hidden during interviews?6 -
I'm all about concepts. I start some project, go through solving major problems, and test it just to scream "It's alive! It can be done, an works!"
Then I lose interest and move on to something else...1 -
Godaddy protects spammers
When you find that a domain that is sending spam is hosted by Godaddy you send it to abuse@godaddy.com. They in turn send you message saying for spam go to the ftc.gov. The ftc.gov says to go to the email host and report to their abuse account. Neither party has an interest in stopping spam anymore.
So Godaddy supports and protects spammers.1 -
When you are involved in a conflict of interest project and its kept under wraps ...but your IT director still wants you to do it because his friend needs something done but don't want to pay for it
Who else has faced this? Or am I the only one...?3 -
I learned the first things in php by the Sololearn app. If that count's as an teacher, it was quite a good one, cause it triggered my interest and guided me into this forest where only google and probably stackoverflow will lead out.2
-
Detection of influential Chat bots on twitter that manipulate people’s genuine expression of interest over social media and later report them to twitter and stop them from doing the same.5
-
I keep jumping between unfinished personal projects and then i get busy with the job, when I try to go back to them, I lose interest! Any advice?7
-
Classmate ( 7.5+ GPAer, probably 8+ ) asking me (<6 GPAer ), how to fill form of TCS ( IT giant ) for campus placement.
Asked me to choose 3 "Field of interest" for him 😑. I Suggested him options, not of much importance ( IOT and IT were on the list too ). When he asked me what are these, I replied him to search on Google.
His brain thought of asking me first them to google about.
Can't even choose what are his field of interest ....Damn 😑14 -
Fun fact: banks won't let me take loans. Any kind of loans.
Why? It's not because I have a history of missing payment schedules. It's because I NEVER had a credit card or loans — I paid for everything with cold hard cash my whole life. But it all changed when I fried a charging controller on my laptop, so I needed a new one fast. I was in between jobs then. So, I took a loan for a new laptop, one thousand dollars, a large sum for me back then. I found a job and covered that loan ahead of schedule, in three months instead of one year. In total, my bank made a mere $5 off of me.
Banks now know I won't bring any kind of interest in whatsoever, as I never miss my payments. So, they decided to quit on me completely.
That's a proof that banks don't want you to pay on time — they want you to delay your payments and let your interest build up, so you're forced to take new loans to cover old ones. They want you to pay interest forever, having barely enough money to cover interest, but not the loan itself.17 -
I'll just leave this here:
https://cnbc.com/2018/06/...
I am GLAD that Microsoft bought it instead of Google12 -
Not tech related, but out of pure interest: Who else is into deathmetal, deathcore, slam death metal, black metal etc ? \m/21
-
So I really hate iOS programming. I'm in school and all my devices for dev are Microsoft based and fuck trying to use hackintosh. So now I have to waste more of my time and gas money going to school to use the stupid fucking imacs to Develop in a language I have 0 interest in. Fuck apple, fuck iOS, and fuck swift!3
-
All companies are the same.
Some are a little more transparent than others but if there is a board of directors, the final interest is money, and only money.
So all companies will betray their costumers if that means more profit.
Microsoft? Google? Amazon? In the end they are all the same.
I don't even trust people, let alone a brand.4 -
How long do you guys stay at a job before switching? Whether due to pay reasons/lack of interest/etc?14
-
Reply to a recruiter today quoting her email:
You will end up with more qualified people if you don't use blatantly fictitious statements like. "While it's not often that I like to email people I don' t know (especially those in different cities!)" You're a recruiter using LinkedIn, the activity of recruiting is partially doing exactly the above.
No interest, have a good day. -
yeah I am a software engineer.
yea I am a programmer too.
yeah I am behind my laptop all the time..
but no I don't want to fix your computer.
I have no interest in changing your windows, installing antivirus on your pc and so on..
just understand it , God damn these shit people :( -
Borrowed 2 books from my school library. The passionate programmer caught my interest. And I grabbed the rootkits one just because I have little idea what a rootkit is so I was curious2
-
Using JavaScript... (we combine JS and c++ and I love c++ ... definitely not JS)
It is such a mess to maintain and work with and I never had any propensity or interest towards web development.. especially JS10 -
Oh no it's happening to me too... Gave up so many hobbies/interests to focus on my career. Now I have almost no interest in side projects because I don't know what to build. (I mean something actually useful not a to-do list.) I love my job, but is this the path to burnout?5
-
Immediately start coding every feature all at once as fast as possible. After about a week I realize the architecture is so bad I can't continue so I stop, and design the architecture properly so it will scale. Then I delete everything I had and start from scratch. Finally after about another week I lose interest and let it rot in the side project graveyard.
Rinse and repeat. -
I was 11, I picked up a Java book out of interest. I was fascinated from minute one. I got interned at a tech company 3 years later.
-
I think a good path to dev education is if you are interested in it as a teen and try out coding and keep failing. Persistence and interest will bring you farther than just going straight to uni/dev school.1
-
!rant
Just an observation.
According to Stackoverflow's survey, it suggests that developers with more experience are less competitive. I still can't understand this. How can developers loose their interest over time?18 -
How do you guys keep motivation in a long term project? Cause I could be completely motivated in the first like half but then just lose interest even though I love the project itself.8
-
When someone put up a suggestion with the words 'GIF animation' and 'Actionscript' in the same sentence, I felt something in me just died. Along with whatever interest I have in this dev meeting.2
-
Does anyone else have those little bouts of creativity and interest where you work on a project of your own 24/7, and then when you finish it you don't know what to do for the next however long?2
-
My least successful project was:
social network for student exchange. I did it for the student organization that after launch decided that they really don't need that and shut it down.
Idea was for students to subscribe to internships of their interest (for example 'developer internship') and then they get notifications when someone from the network publish internship within subscribed interests.4 -
May interest a few people on here: https://security.infoteam.ch/en/...
(note I'm not affiliated with them nor have I tested the product, so don't ask me about that, I just found the read interesting) -
"Talent is a pursued interest. In other words, anything you are willing to practice, you can do." - Bob Ross1
-
It saddens me to see there are developers who are driven by high pay over interest and passion for programming.6
-
After opening game files for Ragnarok Online and saw the quest files are human readable (lua or other scripting language). Had some Flash workshops to confirm my interest.
Later in college, I make games for every lecture projects (with my friends). Now our game studio is 7 years old.2 -
I can't make progress on my private project.
I just started and already refactoring my code.
Yesterday I started to refactor my tests -.-'
I'm sure I will lose the interest in this project because I start a new one I can refactor to death.8 -
When you're programming teacher manages to make the lessons so boring and long winded that every student with the slightest interest in programming loses it 😰3
-
lose all interest in gaming, doesn't feel immersive enough anymore as you start realizing it's just a program under execution3
-
If you could choose between:
• Waiting for an original idea to do something innovative (and maybe never get it).
• Spending an enormous amount of time to recreate one of the first projects you've worked on (and loved) as a beginner, using new technologies and the knowledge gained over the years, knowing that it could be a good product but will probably not get the interest of public and will not sell well on the app stores.
• Working on a project that could work (or not) and become popular, but that doesn't really interest you.
What would you do?
Personal satisfaction or profit?
Of course I don't want to focus on profit, but I'm still a student and my free time is very short, and sometimes I work very hard (I tend to put social life, exams, health, etc. on the second place) on projects that nobody uses. My family and friends think I'm crazy, and sometimes me too.
It's something bad, isn't it?2 -
Guess who got a huge interest in Python this morning. I feel excited to start learning it and do some awesome shit! I need a small break from front end development so I'll try to make some simulators or something with python.. Dunno..1
-
I am a web dev but recently I have a growing interest in robotics and computer engineering. Thus I bought a raspberry pi 3, installed raspbian and then kodi (for testing purposes) on it, kodi was a bit laggy, don't know what to do with it now. Will try to it as a home server, just like a digitalocean droplet. Better suggestions?3
-
I wake up with so much interest and enthusiasm for programming and tech. It all goes away when I start work at 9 AM. Everyday at 5 PM, I question my career choices. I don't have the interest from the beginning of the day nor the energy to do anything.4
-
I just want this week to be over so I can focus on coding =\.
Screw final exams, final research paper, final presentation, and final unit assignment.
I’m terrible at procrastination on things that don’t interest me and my fingers itch to minimize PowerPoint and maximize VS7 -
After a long long time,
Debugged something that blew away my mind on how it works internally..
DynamoDBMapper made my day today.
What could have been more better gift during the super special sweet valentine's week!!!!!
I ❤️ debugging.
Found my lost love and interest to patch up with my most loved one Miss "Programming" -
Does anyone every get JOB from Linkedin ??
I am continuously applying from last 1-2 month and I just got.. Thanks for your interest but we are not moving with your application. No Matter if it is basic skill level Job or higher one? I wonder if I am the only one facing this13 -
- Got yelled by narcissistic father
- Anxiety went through the roof
- Caused no interest to start working
- I am paid hourly
...
- Profit?6 -
Because of my managers attitude I have lost interest in her project ...not fun any more. Now it’s not gonna be of such good quality because now I won’t be developing it with lovvve, won’t be going extra miles ......fucking idiot.1
-
Anyone here worked a whole lot with low level programming?
I have always worked with high level languages like Python and C++, but I’ve also had an interest in working with embedded systems, real close to the metal.
Any directions on where I should go to start learning low level programming? Sites, languages, etc?
Appreciated devRant fam!😊12 -

I think it's a scam that the multinational corporations have pulled off that they've managed to get everyone to call and equate something technical and legally specific, "piracy."
Piracy is the theft and resale of physical goods. Copyright infringement is not piracy. It's a crime(in most countries), for sure, but it isn't piracy. The word "piracy" is emotionally charged, and its use serves the interests of corporate profit, not the interest of the origination of creative works, and certainly not your best interest. It's a deceptive practice. It's a lie.
But "copyright infringement," and "intellectual property," don't grab readers' attention like, "piracy." So, like how DeBeers has indoctrinated the world into thinking that diamonds are valuable, the RIAA, MPAA, and the BSA have indoctrinated the world into buying into the lie that copyright infringement and piracy are the same thing.9 -
I would like to thank everyone for their interest in my last two rants (that two with my CVs).
From what I saw, that rants were in the most popular, for which I thank you all!
As I promised, I will soon release the templates of that CVs
Anyway, thank you all! -
I owe the Tax Man around $600. I could pay it in installments without interest, so wrote a small program to transfer $0.69 every day into their coffer.3
-
None of my friends have interest in learning programming. But I have desire to become a programmer.
I am daily spending 2+ hours other than my work time in doing online courses. But I will feel good if there is anyone to talk and discuss the concepts that I learned.
I am talking and thinking in programming terms like ( Data structure , algorithm) within myself...
Guide me guys... !!!7 -
At one point in my career I tried to do a payment plan for the websites I built for some reason (I guess to make it more affordable for people???).
Out of the 3 people I onboarded 1 of them actually finished paying for everything.
The other 2 didn't make it half way through.
Their invoices are overdue collecting interest to this day. Websites are shutdown.3 -
When it comes to job hunt, i feel so bad.
Specially when i apply through angels.co
Like wait a second before you reject my CV or my application just talk to me.
Take a look on my projects, my will to do, my interest.
Damn i feel so desperate sometimes i feel like they are not real job vacancies just someone messing around.20 -
I keep getting interest for my freelance services and then people totally ghost me. This time I got all the way to “Send me your contract to sign and we’ll get started.” Several followup emails later and no response. I wish there were a way to know this outcome before I ever waste time on the back and forth.5
-
I haven't coded a new project in a long time. I want to build something, show it to the world and hope people use it. I love webapps as I'm pretty experienced in this, and have a huge interest for smart homes, internet of things, twilio, innovative payments and more. What could my MVP be?11
-
As an ex-manager I now realize standups are used for control.
1. It sets a time when everyone must be present (might as well read-out names like it's school)
2. You, the manager, get to have people giving "offerings" of their work for you to approve, deny or bless with your gracious interest ("can you please stay on the call? lets discuss further")8 -
Junior front end developer.
Interest in saas, js and jQuery,
1 year html5 and JavaScript, knowledge of image authoring (Photoshop)
Job is wordpress customisation.
18k... Degree in media required.
So you want a graphic designer for junior developer wage.. lol. -
Question to the Americans here..
Just out of interest.
How many of you know the metric system?
I feel like as a dev you need to know it to communicate with the rest of the world on the same level. But I meet so many Americans that have no clue how metric even works.. (as if it was less logical than imperial 😄)
No offense, just truely curious..10 -
I'm intrigued, what are you all trying to learn in your spare time and how?
I'll go first, brushing up on maths by reading K A Stroud advanced engineering mathematics.
He's got an intro level book that's also very good.5 -
After telling my manager I'm leaving for another company they started taking interest in my life all of a sudden and really want me to stay. In serious doubt about what I should do now.5
-
Studying for college exam
- 2min/sitting
Coding/reading Docs/Book of interest.... after 12 hours
- " OMD ... I completely forgot, i own a mobile"1 -
When I first started getting interest in server side programming, I remember I felt like god with all those possibilities!
-
Not as much a rant as interest, but did any of you guys recently start a business or witnessed the start of one? I really wanted to know how those find the services and tools that get them off the ground or enhance the business, is there lists with "must have" services for specific business categories etc?14
-
I have no motivation to code anymore :/ ... I try but I just don't seem to have the interest in it anymore like I use to have when I was a teen.4
-
I always wanted to become a business man like my dad and I was going to study BBA. Until I saw the tv show Person of Interest, I know it sounds silly but it inspired me to make my own AI system that can predict stuff.
I could not make the machine or Samaritan, but in my final year project, we managed to make an AI system that can categorize emails automatically without any input from the user. The system can create category names by itself and put the emails accordingly.7 -
In the interest of "efficiency" and "low overhead", I've decided to make my computer boot to a tty login, start X manually each time, my window manager being openbox (no panels or nothing)5

I'm going to be getting a new phone sometime in the next few months... Suggestions?
I'm currently looking at the s8 because I can trade in my current phone for $300 towards it. But the one plus 5 and LG V30 have also sparked my interest.15 -
I'm doing my Postgrad in I.T with a specialty in Application development. I've honestly lost interest in software development. I no longer have that *thing* I used to have, I've honestly completely lost interest. I decided to accept I really nice paying Technical Support Analyst position. It's very close to my house and I can work from home.4

Yo Vanessa? I like, appreciate your interest but can you not let your bots run wild?
On a more serious note: This has happened about 10 times already. -
TLDR : do you have any tips for lack if motivation / interest in a project?
So I recently got my very first job (R&D). and to give you some context I'm a freshman at college with around a year of experience with programming. so a job like this is amazing for me. it pays well, I work from home, and get to work with nice people. Been working for 4 months now but lately have been loosing interest tbh. For the past month or so I haven't been putting as much effort into the project and I have no idea why. Does anyone have similar experiences with lacking motivation/interest? If you do I'd love to hear from you.2 -
Just as a point of interest, who here enjoys Linguistics? (other than your programming languages, just wondering if one is relatable to the other)7

Didn't learn to code till late 20's
Always wanted to program since I was a little kid but was discouraged by everyone I ever talked to about it as it being 'too difficult .'
Finally had an awsome college professor that took special interest to encourage me to go after it. -
At times, HR can display behaviour of a car salesman.
Me: A new initiative on my project requires additional developer added to my team. I need a senior frontend developer.
HR: We currently don't have anyone like that, but could we interest you in a junior backend developer that dabbles in HTML and JavaScript?? -
Just a random question out of interest:
How much shit did the younger members on here get because of their age? And for which reasons?12 -
Software engineering was the only field, which was scientific in it's nature and got my interest in early teens.
I've always wanted to be a scientist and/ or do scientific research, however, this dream is still far away at this point in my career. -
I'm seriously interested in programming and all that comes with it and have been for a long time. I'd love to talk to some people that share the same interest but struggle to find people. Any tips? Note: I am not in university/college yet.8

Hm... Sounds familiar and works pretty well I think? 😀
Imagine a local pizzeria is seeking a $200,000 bank loan to expand its business. Usually, if a bank accepts, the loan is provided with interest. This is a risk for the pizzeria, because if it can’t pay back the loan with interest, the business could suffer or close altogether.
There are other options, though. Imagine instead if the bank offered the pizzeria a $100,000 loan, and required it to raise the rest within the community, selling coupons in a local currency. A $100 coupon might be worth $120 in pizza, for instance. This scheme could help the pizzeria raise the extra funds.
In general, the bank’s risk in offering the loan is also decreased. Customers themselves help a business grow, making it even easier for the pizzeria to repay the original loan.
The pizzeria can now expand without being burdened by huge interest payments, and is confident that the community is eager to support its growth. Customers, in turn, are rewarded by a 20 percent discount on pizza!6 -
A combination of life literally pushing me in this direction and my own interest in everything that is smart or complex.
But, I hope it serves as a stepping stone for me to achieve better things than being "just a programmer/dev" -
Recruiter: ‘Dear PsCustomObject,
I checked your profile and your experience with JavaScript is impressive and I wanted to gauge your interest with company XY...’
Too bad nowhere in my profile JS is mentioned as I don’t use it (and would love a better life knowing it is not out there anymore).2 -
I want to work in backend and my fucking company want me to learn FRP in which I have no fucking interest 😫😭4

Is it just me or is the majority of all additional slack apps really just crap? Many cannot even be installed because the website is no longer available (WorkingOn as an example).
Not a single app really helps us in our workflow. I lost the interest to try more of them :(1 -
I can recommend a very good series, which is about an AI:

It catched me so I think I won't be the only one.8 -
Anyone out here started their programming interest by creating moding/ creating their own private WoW servers back in the day? Or any thing of such nature ?
Mine interest was sparked by screwing around with mangos private wow server source. Way back in the day haha.3 -

I feel that it is still futuristic and we aren't there yet. What do you think?1 -

Is there a way to hide ++ and notifs from the UI itself
I am thinking about the current UI, seems like it is designed to “catch-up”.
A more refreshing design would be where i get to hide all the ++ and notifs from the UI itself.
That way App engagement is solely based on my realistic interest rather than an need for external validation8 -
Well, here goes the first day of my four week notice period. Finally took the decision to look for a new job last week. I'm curious where I'm gonna end up, but I'll be relieved when these four weeks are over. I lost interest in the job I'm currently at and it sucks that I'm still stuck here for so long, but at least there's an end in sight now.1
-
The period of half a year when I mostly lost interest in programming.
Then again, I haven't even done my GCSEs (or equivalent) :) -
Well, first off I want to actually pass my college classes. You know, the classes I barely find interest in that seem to be very minimal in my coding skills.
Next, take up or join a project for the summer. You know, get my name out there.
Third, make money
Fourth, make something significant in the OSdev community. I absolutely love low-level dev. Now (to myself) Let's do this! -
I am a programming teacher in a local university, I started five years ago, but in this semester I feel very tired, the students don't want to learn. I tray many methodologies and practical protects but the interest show by they is very low. the worst thing is that in anonymous evaluation I get good score but my objective is that students become in a great programmers ¿any advice?2

Within some real time communications app, my colleague, puts breakpoints to inspect. While inspecting the other party of comms goes into timeout. I advised to use print-breakpoints (vs 2015). So he stops the program and looks for the variable of interest then hit Run as fast as he can.

I'm thinking of writting off 4 years of my life i.e 2011 - 2015 i.e my college life. The baggages from that period is the biggest distraction in my life.
I made some bad choices and chose a stream that i eventually lost interest in, while on the other hand, i found my interest in programming. It was too late for me when i find my interest.
When my course completed, i had nothing to brag or be proud about but over 15 backpapers.
Two years since then the count of my back papers is down to 1.
Having to study for these failed exams on subjects i don't care anymore makes me hate myself.
But, I'm just 1 exam away from this stupid degree.
2 uses that i see in this degree:
- can confidently add in my resume that i graduated college.
- parents can be "proud" i finally have a degree and increase my chances in finding a match in matrimony. :/
However, these 2 advantages don't align with the life i vision. I don't want to live 9 to 5 work life, I'd rather be self employed in some way.
If i don't make it in the next exam, I'm gonna write it off. I might have to live with strained relationship with my parents and relatives after that.. :/5 -
I (with some help) wrote a gui app for Ubuntu that would help running bin files without the need of the terminal.
The sheer excitement from getting that stuff to work was what sparked my interest. -
How do you guys feel about privacy after watching series like "Person of interest" or "Mr Robot" ?10

So, A very close friend of mine is a fellow computer science student. But she has no interest in coding. Mostly because she never tried it. Is there any post or video that can help her find a motivation.

I've taken an interest in Android development and have discovered the existence of Flutter a while back. The thing is, I'm midway into learning Kotlin. Should I stick with it for now and then consider Flutter after I've learned the ropes of Android development or should I consider it now? I know I'll have to learn Dart which is different from Kotlin.4

What is your favorite and least favorite areas of development?
My favorite is native programming(desktop and mobile) followed by backend programming.
My least favorite area has to be web frontend and DSL automation.1 -
Delays. Delays in payment, delays in scope and spec delivery, delays from the graphics guys, delays from the X guy, the Y guy, this company, that company. No matter what the reason, delays leave that leave the Dev waiting and sitting around despondent and losing interest faster than the second to latest viral video.

Maybe someone can help me with this...
I have been doing design for three years and coding for two years now, and recently, two months back I have developed an interest in electronics.
I have a real hard time trying to figure out which dev field to pursue! It seems like I just fall into anything that intrigues me!!9 -
A Fresher in my company stated he'd like to get into CyberSecurity. I offered him mentorship, however his motivation and drive doesn't really line up with this interest. Making CS more practical oriented and hands-on focussed would help a lot. It will develop more interest and attract more students. Nothing feels better than your own code doing what you intended it to.

We are learning a method for reflecting on our progress.
The teachers use a wedding as an example in front of 5 classes of guys only.

Family - "You might be a great coder, but if you dont have a degree, you wont get respect"
Overall, my brother and family are very supportive. only thing i dont like is their strong thrust to get me graduated and pass the exam, despite my negative interest in the course i am enrolled into.
I am into programming, not because of money, that is flowing around it, or the present day trend. Infact programming was not my field of interest, even though I was always interested in computers and machines. My first choice was to become a mechanical engineer. But i got enrolled into Electronic communication course.
Only after sophmore year, i started getting interest in programming.
Programming, to me is a very powerful tool. You can create what you want.

imagine building an app using javascript(react-native) that get list of skills which will be displayed to the user to select and the same list displayed as interest for the user to do the same if you try to treat them seperately but from the same source you get a shit result e.g
const list = responseFromApi;//array of object
let skills = list;;
let interest = list;
skills.checked = true;
interest is changed and the list constant variable is changed the values change were ever the list variable is assign to a variable and the variable is tempered.
the above code was the fustration i got with javascript when i didnt know of the mutation guy.
Mutation is a nightmare never knew javascript object are passed by reference which make them mutable this sucks....
another crazy behavior below though the same;
const person = {name:'Dan',age:43} //object
let person0 = person;
let person1 = person;
person1.name = 'David'
the value of both person0 and person get change.
this is madness .3 -

The Economists department where I'm getting a PhD announced a 'great' job opportunity in the State Manufacturing Federation. It seemed truly great, it was an interest job and it required every single ability I've been developing over these years: coding, database management, statistical analysis, geoprocessing and making of maps... But the salary was offensively low. That day I realized how much I'm valued in the market. *sigh*

I'd appreciate peoples thoughts about it. I have everything set up in GitHub for review/submissions.

I've started way too many projects. Even more than the number of times I've shopped clothes for myself. But I rarely complete anything ever. Once the learning phase is over and I've to actually do the typing out the code part, I lose interest and leave the project and start new ones. -

How do you guys manage to keep interest up in your work? I seem to have fallen into a rut at work where it just doesn't keep my interest anymore. It's mainly bug fix stuff, and the requirements are given few and far between so there's a lot of down time to, even working across 3 programs...3

Starts work on it.
2-3 days interest still there.
Gets bored after and puts project on halt.1 -
Sometimes i distance myself from extreme coding to develop intrest again in the work.
What are your thoughts do you guys lose interest sometimes?2 -
If you're not truly interested in it.
I don't like math, sitting or a lot of reading but my interest in programming gradually increased overtime. -
Momentum and flow state is such a magical thing, like compound interest. I started off the Phoenix Project with like 2 or 3 chapters per day. But in the last two days I read like 15 chapters (5 chapters + 10 chapters) and finished the book.2

I train in classical singing. I have an interest in early western music, especially Gregorian chant, though I also enjoy Renaissance/Baroque polyphony. I'm even organizing a music conference next month!

I get too excited, make a plan for future-proof infrastructure, initialize project, code a lot of it, then it gets too cumbersome and impossible for single dev because it is future proof, I lose my interest and then most of the time the project gets even removed on Github eventually after sometime

I honestly can't remember which I used first, but my dad had a monochrome apricot with snake and a Texas instruments with Parsec. I think we still have the TI lying around somewhere.

TLDR: Opinions of area of interest between these subjects (specializations):
1 Algorithms
2 Programming languages
3 Business analytics
4 Pervasive computing
Hi, I'm about to choose specialisation of my software development masters. Can anyone suggest me some open source projects? I went through a lot of articles where everyone said according to your interest you should select the project
I also went through this:

I was very interested with the concept of programming and so I downloaded varies IDE's one of which was Android studio, I didn't have interest in it at first but one day I was bored and decided to open Android studio and play around placing varies components making a very uninteractive app and the feeling I got was unexplainable and I knew that this was going to be my passion.1

So, I have been offered two jobs at the same company (big, global corp)
1. RPA coordinator or operator or business analyst. Completely new to me, they're happy with my background enough so that I could learn on the job. RPA is new in this place and they're creating team from scratch.
2. Member of IT security team where most of my work would be split between things that interest me greatly - vulnerabilities, fixing them and pen testing.
I'm not sure what to pick, really.
Option 1 seems to be way more future proof and seems like a lifetime opportunity to get into something relatively new, potentially more ££ down the road.
Option 2 is what I already spent some time learning and I have quite a big interest in. I've always been less of a programmer and more of an admin/sec guy.
Tbh before option 1 called me yesterday I thought that option 2 is a dream job for me. Now I'm all in doubt.12 -
I started programming with C# for a Windows Phone 8 app for my dad. Never finished it, but it sparked my interest for programming.
And mostly because I want my friends to say something like:"Wow, you're super cool" or something like that.(FAILED)
Now I work with C++ and I'm proud of myself, so I basically inspired myself to take on programming. -
I lost the enthusiasm I had for just programming languages mostly functional languages. I see my peers who were already in the game. I came late, did all the functional hardcore bullshit and become a top pro and now lost interest.
Now its until and unless I don't see something working end to end nicely, go fuck your shit. But regardless fuck OOP3 -

Not having ever completed a project, except for a really simple app my school asked me to do. It's like I start to make something, anything, but then I lose interest in it pretty quickly. I guess it's because I can't come up with an idea of something that I think would be really useful/fun.

This thing always bugs me. What should i do totally??
I've been experimenting with all kinds of development. Web, mobile, system, desktop apps and softwares. I don't know which one i should choose as a career. my question is: why?
i didnt find either the response to that question nor even the acknowledgement of that fact, yet...
