Dumb tests are a form of intense intellectual masturbation, causing a lot of lost time as a side effect3

It takes days to get a review. 3rd notice unanswered. So today it will be merged without review of 5 MRs. We’ll see what breaks in prod anyways.4

I am so pissed at all the shit I have to do to publish a simple app on the playstore. Every 2 phrases is a threat to ban my account, and target audience, and privacy policy, all of this for an app that is absolutely not serious. And I am not even started with the Apple Store because I am too broke this month to throw $100.4

Fuck Confluence and anyone telling me to write anything there. From now on, documentations will be in the repo, written in Markdown8

2 years ago I would have hoped Discord would have started an enterprise version of their software but now it’s bloated with stupid paying gifs animations, activities and other cringe micro-transactions
Problem is there is no alternative of their role-based permissions system, or their open audio channels, or even the audio quality.6 -
Honestly tired of those "let's put a bit of random AI here" talks. All it does is eat money for pointless features, and with the average trend duration in 2k23 it will not even have the slightest impact.3

The next one who tells me “MacBooks are superior” will take mine in the face at a speed no benchmark ever recorded.26

The test setup is broken and prevents me from running my test? Fine. I remove the test. Can’t be bothered by this anymore, it’s just a waste of time.2

Why don’t we create a worldwide union? We are in every companies, by being coordinated we could obtain anything18

I left my country (France) because of the working conditions that are absolutely terrific in software engineering.
Basically, 80% of the time you will be hired by agencies which rent you in a dishonest way to other companies. Half of the later use the agencies services because they are scared by the work code, which is tough but fair, and the other half can’t hire because the agencies put a lot of money to get the engineers and make money by renting employees.
Most of the companies you will work in in France will have outdated stack, and an awful bureaucratic hierarchy.
Your boss will suspect you do nothing.
There is also an untold competition taking place in every companies : who will stay the longer in the office, sometimes taking place until 8pm.
I moved to the UK, the country is absolutely awful, but the working conditions for engineers are a way better, more realistic.12 -
I will never rant enough about Windows. It is so aged. I have 6TB of storage, 2 SSD of 1To and 1 HDD of 6TB
But windows doesn’t care, it will pack everything in the same disk in this damned AppData no matter where you install your softwares, making main disk full.
Wanted to build a rather big docker image, but yeah, because I guess that the guys from Docker have other things to do than caring of a 90s OS with a fancy UI, they use an emulated ext4 file system, it filled my disk, Docker is crashing because of that, letting me no other choice than removing the emulated disk.9 -
Those days, I have a lot of companies reaching me directly on my professional mail to sell to me their shit. Should I randomly visit one to ask for an explanation in person?2

So, I've been reading all this complaints about micro services which started to be loud thanks to the mad CEO of Twitter.
Keep reading but I am curious about your opinion as well
To me all the point of micro services has never been about improving the speed, in fact it might have a negative impact on the performances of an application. I think that given the calculation power we have nowdays, it's not a big deal
However on the other side, it makes all the rest so much easier.
When there's a problem on one service, I can just debug the given service without spending hours starting a huge slow turtle
If something goes down, it doesn't make unhealthy the whole app, and if I am lucky it's not gonna be a critical service (so very few people will be pissed).
I have documentation for each of them so it's easier to find what I am looking for.
If I have to work on that particular service, I don't have to go through thousands of tangled lines of code unrelated to each other but instead work on an isolated, one-purpose service.
Releasing takes minutes, not hours, and without risk of crashing everything.
So I understand the complaint about the fact that it's making the app run slower but all the rest is just making it easier.
Before biting my ass, I am not working at Twitter, I don't know the state of their application (which seems to be extremely complicated for an app deigned to post a bit of text and a few pictures), but in a company with skilled people, and a well designed architecture.11 -
With his last tweets (and the last days), Musk has shown he is a total fraud.
This thousand requests story was possible to check just by installing a Wireshark-like on Android.
And I remember having a CTO exactly like this. Always an opinion on every damn technical thing, often making no sense at all and all the time totally off.
Which drives me to this conclusion :
If you are a CTO/CEO/C Bullshit O, go back to your damn office, fill your paperwork and for the sanity of every engineer, shut your mouth.22 -
Class-action started against Microsoft and GitHub Copilot
Please don't fine them, just force any code written with Copilot to be released under GPL6 -
Might be a little bit naive but software engineers have so much power over the society. What is gonna happen if we turn everything off until we get what we want?5

A big company owned by a bald cynical guy selling stuff especially during the black Friday offered me a job, all I had to do is 5 interviews.
So I found real job instead.3 -
For every business you don't like, you should make a competitor GNU project just to piss them off 👍1

Everyone knows about the origins of the "metaverse" but everyone keep talking about it as it was something positive.3

Ranting (again) against the almighty marketing teams. So recently we started to build an amazing feature for our product but have been told to put the project on hold to help the "conversion team" which is focusing on trial, subscription and payment. But we are lagging behind the competitors regarding the features, for a huge price. But marketing wants that. Marketing wants an over engineered flow to be "fixed" for the 382948 time. Never had an impact on the conversation and will never have. So here is the truth : marketing stir the air because of their damn complex of inferiority and their inability to build anything.

Am I the only one who's sick of seing "new revolutionary language" from google & co that solves absolutely nothing but is becoming trendy because of the company's name?13
-
I am SO TIRED of marketing teams imposing their tools to developers. I am TIRED of all those crappy old libraries or meaningless APIs2

Meanwhile, I see everyone talking about the price of the MacBook while I am forced to work on MacOS and I find that really unpleasant9
