Sitting outside, in the park, sunny, warm, music, writing a new blog post for the security/privacy blog.
I actually love this 😊15 -
When the PM knows their shit and rejects the clients request for Wordpress and says the site is not a freakin blog.8
-
I'm proud to announce a new project made by myself and @thejohnhoffer, that started on devrant.
We started collaborating after I made a rant about machine learning and, since then we've been working hard on a plain language blog that simplifies machine learning concepts.
We call it learn-blog.
Check it out at ironman5366.github.io/learn-blog15 -
Gonna start a blog where i take medium articles by retards and explain why is what they write stupid12

When you look for a strongly opinionated article about JavaScript but you get a JavaScript framework instead..5

I'll hopefully be releasing the security/privacy blog (going to bundle both into one blog) tonight.
I'm actually nervous about this 😅
(first post will solely be an introduction/hello post)77 -
Wrote a blog post
Got 1200 pageviews
Checked adsense acc $0.00
Then realised my ads are not working13 -
The security/privacy blog.
Get ready for a new blog post, dark theme and a new domain name today!
Sorry, I love to announce stuff 😊22 -
Mother of god, choosing a topic for today's security/privacy blog post is hard!
I have too much choice 😅23 -
Currently trying to write a dark theme solution for the security blog in pure JavaScript (no jquery).
This is way easier than I thought!108 -
Going to do tonight's blog post about my own security setup since that's an easy one and I'm working on rewriting the blog which gets me quite some bugs to solve!
I'm wondering how paranoid people will find me afterwards 😅18 -
draw.io is moving to diagrams.net, because .io domains are not secure.

I wrote this blog post entirely on my phone through doing an SSH on my home server. Why, you ask, well because I don't have my laptop and I am hella bored. Stupid, you say, well I agree.

Shame on every developer who ever wrote a blog post about a complex topic that included only trivial examples!7

I wanted to share this with you guys, it's a manefesto for developers and it's worth a look.

I really want to make my own anonymous blog, but I am scared that someone will expose me after I write there something recognisable. 😒15

I really truly want to run my own dev blog, but every time I write an article, I feel that it's too dumb and useless because I already know the thing I wrote. I know it's absurd, yet I can't fight my own anxiety about it.2

From a gitlab blog post:

I regret commenting on a WordPress blog using my full name. Although there was nothing stupid on what I wrote, I just hate it that I googled my name and it showed. I just want to delete my useless information / myself on the internet.
Never will this happen again.10 -
I decided to write a diss article in Medium about SJWs because I'm kinda sick and tired of them

So, I want to start a blog where I can post the result of my research and showcases as tutorials... I though that if I'm doing it for my job, it could help somebody else.
What would you recommend me? Any advice?6 -
Sometimes I think there are a lot of people that just don't deserve a blog.
Headline: "Which supermarket is the best??"
Text: "This bored dude bought butter in two supermarkets, but which one is cheaper??? Click the video to find out"
My dude. You have a fucking blog. You type stuff in it. Write the fucking result in a sentence AND STOP TRYING TO WASTE MY TIME.7 -

PHP is the best framework for VSCode.
Now that I have your attention... Have you written a technical article? I'm thinking of writing something frontend related but not sure what topic to pick.
I'd love to hear about your experience and any tips you may have :D11 -
Receive several documents of blog posts from a client, each one titled "Blog $n - $category - $title." Cool, the client gave them to me in order and I just have to plug them in.
Enter blogs on site starting with Blog 1.
Client sees the blogs on the site and loses their shit. "I specifically numbered the blogs so you knew what order to put them in! How hard is it to put them in numerical order? Blog 1 is the newest blog and should be first on the page."
The site displays the newest post first, but because any normal person would have named the oldest blog "blog 1" and counted up from there the blogs are in the reverse order the client expected.
What the hell kind of dense motherfucker numbers their blog files in a manner which requires them to rename every file each time they write a new blog post? -
That moment when you start spotting mistakes in blog articles regarding some new topic you're currently studying5

This is the first time where people stumbled upon my blog posts on each day of A WHOLE WEEK! Amazing 🥳2

Hey guys! I need help!
I started to write a blog about the stuff I currently investigating: How to combine React, Oauth and Node.js.🤯
However, my penmanship isn’t that good.
So I’m looking for some nice stock images for good meme and funny pictures to support my writing.
Does Anybody know where I could download a nice bundle instead of google them one by one?🤔4 -
How many of you fellow devRanters out there have a blog? And, more importantly, actively maintain it?11

I'm thinking about starting my own blog, where I can post my research and/or opinions on...

For those of you that have a blog...
Ever have this moment where you do one relatively minor thing and end up spending the next hour writing a blogpost about it?5 -
So I think my dumbest project so far was when I created a pseudo-random number generator which instead of using some proper source of randomness used freaking Minecraft Villagers.
I wrote a blog post on it, so feel free to take a look there to see how I did it and perhaps learn something about randomness.

So for the past few days I decided to create my own personal blog because I wanted to start blogging again. Anyways, I setup a basic WP website (sorry wp haters xD) and installed a pretty cool free theme that I tweaked all over the place.
I was thinking of cool things to add while I'm just in that setting up phase and I really admired that whole dark/light mode toggling feature :) so I spent the past day or so creating my own and it works finally, even across different pages! So i thought I'd share. (Please excuse the BS posts, its strictly for testing. Havent actually started writing posts yet xD)
Url: https://notyourcode.com
Heres also a link to this terrible js file I wrote that controls the logic lol (I'll have to refactor quite a bit but it works)

Working in my first "modern" website, a personal blog. Holy fscking crap does this shit suck. Layout and CSS etc is basically a trial and error gig at best. There is no rhyme or reason. Why?!?!5
-
Once I told a good friend that I will make a website for his business. I do all IT stuff he only has to do the content. Halfway done with the site I asked if he has written anything. He had not. Then a week later I asked again. He had nothing. So I sat down with him and helped him write what he does and why people should go to him. Then I told him to ask a mutual photographer friend to take pictures for him. A week went by when I asked him if he has contacted the guy. He had not. Then I was like: "Dude! If you are not willing to put any effort into making this happen then why the hell should I?"
In the end he didn't do anything. And that's the story of my friend never getting a free website.
The End.1 -

I've been working for two days (after work) on my blog idea...
Man I forgot how fun it is to work on your own projects, and the stuff I learn at the moment... It is insane!
I am currently a very happy developer, hopefully I can keep this up.
I still have to look into automated unit testing and code formatting checks with github though, cant wait! -
I write a blogpost twice a year and then spend 4 hours fixing my handcrafted blog engine. It's healthy to stay in the loop regarding the latest Vite, Typescript and React bugs and inconsistencies I guess.
Anyway, I explained a cool pattern with Rust traits:

Ever tried to do something “simple” and it ended up taking several days and a piece of your sanity?
Trying to connect my website to a blog site made with Hexo has been that for me.
I am actively trying to not think about the fact that my live website is so horrendously broken.
Dying inside.3 -

Spent hours synthesizing few novel ideas on Notepad, and then did Ctrl-A, Ctrl-X so I could just paste it in my private blog. The blog wouldn't respond, ssh'd into the server to troubleshoot, and then realized my habitual use of Ctrl-C destroyed that very content I spent hours on. Only realized this after I got the blog back up running again. X-( I should start getting into habit of using VSCode or Gvim more.8

Hey guys!
So a few days ago I started the #100DaysOfCode Challenge but at the end of the first day I got annoyed by realizing how frustrating the character limit on Twitter can be.
So I started a blog where I could say whatever I want withiut any limits.
Then, yesterday, I got two projects to make as a final project for my game development lab. So I decide while making it to also write a tutorial on it!
I'm currently on the second part and I would really really reaaaaally LOVE some feedback since it's the first time I write a blog and tutorials 😅 And well, I believe the style is kinda different from the usual blog, so I would love to know what you think about it.
Also any ideas and suggestions will be extremely appreciated!
You can find the blog at https://blog.kamaropoulos.tk
You can also find some more backstory on my Twitter profile @KamaropoulosK
Thank you everyone in advance SO much!
You are all great people and I'm glad to be part of this amazing community!
Have a great day/evening/night everyone!3 -
Do some of you make a passive income from something dev related?
What are your experiences?
I’m thinking about starting a dev blog with focus on financial software, but it would be nice to do something that brings in some extra bugs. There are so many blogs, mine would probably not even be seen by anyone..4 -

Can anyone recommend a good free blogging site?
Was going to use wordpress but im not paying 130 AUD just to map it to a sub domain.

For those who are involved/want to be involved in a start-up (or even if you just like a good blog), look up James Altucher. I'm not sure if it is a dev experience, but definitely boosted my morale.
In 2014, my company (in India) sent me to attend a conference in Boston. The conference was about big data.
When I came back, I wrote a blog post about Apache Spark in my company's blog. Because of the blog, my name got mentioned in a prominent newspaper's article about Apache Spark.
PS: That is my only blog post till date -

So turns out I am making a blog about my attempt to make a Facebook but not clone for my wife and her friend. Any blog naming ideas? I am thinking "Facebook but Different" haha. Progress on my blog (incocast) goes smoothly, even implemented a basic rss feed. Currently the blog is Service Layer only (because I still have to create a front-end)
It might even be interesting to open some api calls to the public... I don't know yet.. Maybe..
Either way the next thing to implement is a commenting system! :) -
I was just curious but don't need it, the domain would be great for a personal blog/portfolio. First come first serve.
Your welcome. -

Normally, I'd leave it there like most other people. But this is devRant, not Facebook [citation needed], so let me take the opportunity to talk about a dev-related project I'm mulling over.
A number of years ago, I dropped my music hobby in exchange for focusing on my computer science/programming skills. I'm now at a point where I'm working professionally as a developer, and I've wanted to get back into music for quite some time. Specifically, I want to make music, not just perform it.
Thing is, I've had difficulty trying to find a good platform for uploading WIPs to get feedback from. I'm hesitant to post them on social media platforms for a variety of reasons (though I'm open to budge), so I've been considering alternatives.
So here's my idea: A personal blog made from the ground up that details my journey rediscovering music, including tracking the resources I've used for others to refer to, music samples, etc. I think it would be a great opportunity to not only get feedback on music I've made, but to also incorporate my programming skills with my music hobby.
I'd appreciate any feedback on the idea, as well as any advice/recommended tools for taking on a project like this.4 -
FYI, please don't use the leading blog CMS for a custom ecommerce site ... That doesn't even have a blog.

Good people of devRant, hear me! Today is a proud day, a day of happiness, peace, and prosperity!
Theatrical opening lines aside, I need your help. I have finally completed the setup for one of my long ongoing projects and need some input from experienced developers of any kind. I've recently started a blog focused around building a community for people who want to learn more about all engineering disciplines or want to see if they would like being an engineer. The majority of the content will be posts about various topics that relate to either specific disciplines or engineering as a whole, and cool projects you can do to work out what is fun to you.
HackTheWorld.io is the URL and I'd welcome any feedback you can give, from design to development. I used the hexo framework, which is a static html blog generator that I then upload to a web host via FTP. Let me know what you think and if you have any ideas form posts on the site, feel free to leave those as well. I've got a few I'm writing now that will hopefully help some people out there.1 -
What's your interesting and useful web dev blog that you have subscribed?
I don't like news blog. Prefer an individual developer's or a company's blog where they share their experience, tips, random stuff etc.4 -
Really need to blog more. Tired of relearning the stuff I thought I got 3 months ago, all the time.🥺3
-
Does anyone blog or post on dev topics / tutorials, and if so what platform do you use these days?
- Medium is just full of aggressive paywall crap these days - not interested.
- Freecodecamp is more geared towards tutorials, though I wouldn't be against this - but seems like it's mainly geared towards "getting started" tutorials, and there's no way to comment on articles either.
- dev.to seems to be more of a "Twitter for devs" rather than a blogging platform.
- Blogger is as good as dead.
- Self-hosted platforms require me to maintain them, and I can't be arsed with the SEO side of things.
Anything I'm missing? Apart from to give up and do something more worthwhile with my time of course...5 -
Today, I set up a Tumblr blog where I can write my non-tech related rants. It's actually a very nice platform.3

Open to suggestions for code snippets to add!11 -
Any recommendations for moving a blog?
My wife and I just cancelled our account with siteground hosting a WordPress blog. Looking for a cheaper alternative. Willing to get my hands dirty as a web dev, but would like a nice CMS experience for my wife. Also want to keep our existing content. If we can keep our custom domain somehow that would be a win.
Thanks!7 -
For those that do any kind of non-trivial tech blogging, what platform/product/etc would you recommend?
I've found pros and cons to rolling my own (several times) and static generators like Jekyll and Octopress, hosted services like Medium and Ghost, but self-hosted Wordpress is still my pick at the moment. I would be keen to hear what others are using and what advantages you get (e.g. ease of deployment, good editing experience, cheap hosting, lightweight / performant, versatile code embedding and presentation etc)2 -

What's devrant's opinion on WordPress blogs?
I've wanted to start a blog for a while to share what I know and learn from others who read and want to correct my mistakes on the blog. But as of now my own site is barely held together and nowhere near ready to host a blog. So while I continue learning and building my skills to eventually make my site more reflective of my abilities I'm considering starting WordPress blog to just start now rather than continue the 'eventually' trend I've been following while working on my site.23 -

Wondering about how I should continue with my blog.
One the one hand, Ive always liked the video format Uncle Bob uses, and I think Id actually find it easier to talk about my ideas rather than write about it.
On the other hand, I know a lot of people prefer a written article they can read at their own pace.
Thinking I might try a hybrid of some sort, like record a vlog and then write the article afterwards, using the video for reference since I already got the words out.2 -

#Suphle Rant 3: Road to PHP8, Flow travails
Some primer: Flows is a feature that causes the framework to bypass handling the request now but read it from cache. This cache entry is meant to be populated without warming, based on the preceding request. It's sort of like prefetching but done on the back end
While building Suphle, I made some notes on some chapters about caveats and gotchas I may forget while documenting. One such note was that when users make the Flow request, the framework will attempt to determine who user is, using authentication mechanism defined on the first module (of the modular monolith)
Now, I got to this point during documentation and started wondering whether it's impossible for the originating request to have used a different authentication mechanism, which would result in an empty entry for returning user. I *think* it's possible cuz I've got something else called "route mirroring", where web based routes can be converted to API routes. They'll then return JSON, get served under defined API path, use JWT, all automatically. But I just couldn't connect the dots for the life of me, regarding how any of this could impact authentication on the Flow request
While trying to figure out how to write the test for this or whether it was even necessary (since I had no use case), it struck me that since Flow requests are not triggered by an actual user, any code attempting to read authenticated user will see nothing!
I HATE it when I realize there's ambiguity or an oversight, after the amount of attention and suffering devoted. This, along with a chain of personal troubles set off despondency for a couple of days. No appetite for food or talk. Grudgingly refactored in this update over some days. Wrote some tests, not all passed. More pain. May have to convert them to unit tests
For clarity, my expectation is, I built this. Nothing should be impossible for me
Surprisingly, I caught a somewhat lucky break –an ex colleague referred me to the 1st gig I'm getting in 1+ year. It's about writing a plugin for some obscure forum software. I'm not too excited cuz it's poorly documented and I'll have to do a lot of groping, they use arrays instead of objects etc. There's no guarantee I'll find how to implement all client's requirements
While brooding last night, surfing the PHP subreddit, stumbled on a post about using Rector to downgrade a codebase. I've always been interested in the reverse but didn't have any incentive to fret over it. Randomly googled and saw a post promising a codebase can be upgraded with 3 commands in 5 minutes to PHP 8. Piqued my interest around 12:something AM. Stayed up all night upgrading it, replacing PHPSTAN with Psalm, initializing the guy's project, merging Flow auth with master etc. I think it may have taken 5 minutes without the challenge of getting local dev environment to PHP 8
My mood is much lighter than it was, although the battle is not won yet –image tests are failing. For some weird reason, PHP8 can't read generated test images. Hope I can ride on that newfound lease on life to study the forum and get the features working
I have some other rant but this is already a lot to digest in one sitting. See you in rant #4 -
Found a nice domain name, and I intend to buy it to host my personal website and maybe blog (if I get around to write one day). But now a great question arises: where do I buy it?
Do you have any advice on a cheap and nice registrar and hosting provider?14 -
I learnt more about git and how it goes about doing its stuff.. And decided to bestow that wisdom.upon the world..

It’s like my boss is trying to purposely make my life difficult.
He forces me to make two barely started and very complex websites live months early and then spends the rest of the day complaining that things don’t work properly yet.
What the actual fuck, what do you expect?!
But no, people are desperate to read your poorly formatted blog posts about how amazing Gary V is. -
I know why some some bloggers would end up in hell.
- They write without dates. Really trying to solve some problem the solution is far south. yoo -
If I wanted to write some article about code, where would you prefer to read it?
Medium? Dev.to? Something else?14 -
I want to build a blog. Which language do you recommend me to use? Which is better and why?
I know MEAN, Rails, PHP... But I just can't decide which one to use. I don't wanna use any wordpress-like app (joomla or any other thing).
Thanks! :D10 -
What are the best practices when making a blogging website?
I'm creating an addition to my personal website to include a blog, and want to follow the best practices for it. Do I just save everything in a JSON? Or do I just make every entry a "page" in Gatsby/React? What have you all done? Would love to see some examples.4 -
First of all, this is a bit of spam. So maybe you don't want to read this. I don't want to waste your time.

I recently started a blog where I write about my experiences of dev life, git and others.

What have devs tried for creating and hosting their own blog?
I have tried multiple options with goal of being least painful to maintain. Recent is based on Netlify + Gatsby. Have documented here - https://abhi2rai.com/blog/...

I want to start a blog, and the name will be “I have a call degree/I am a programmer, but how do I”. Through this blog I want to share things I learned by my own, like seriously, nobody taught me to write full stack application, nobody taught me how to write opencv in c++, nobody taught me how to write a simple game, anyone has any suggestions?2

Hey guys! Quick question!
If I write an article on my blog (WordPress), then copy it and paste it word by word on LinkedIn, Medium, CSharpCorner and CodeProject.
Would my blog will be effected? Will Google kick me out of their indexing? I'd be my own content.5 -
What is your favorite coding/development related blog/news/digest/man/other resource you visit at your leisure?3

Apparently the standard "pack" of applicants for a job is at least 100 people, how else can you only be in the top "2%"? If there's only 2 applicants, your fingers (typing skills?) are in the top 2%, and the rest is in the upper 48.
All of that just to say it would have been better worded as 2 in 100 people than 2% =).

For a while now I've wanted to make a blog about engineering and discovering different types of engineering (software development, electrical, mechanical, etc). In the blog I'd like to write about journey discovering what kind of engineering I wanted to be, how I got here, and fun projects you can do to see what different types of engineering fields are like. Long story short I want one of those projects to be my process making the blog they're actually reading it on and I have no idea where to start with web dev. Can I get pointers (puns) to resources or frameworks that would be good for beginners?5

Best: Completing the first year of my professional career doing what I like and learning from my team mates, which have been awesome. Wrote a couple of blog posts, they were my first, that helped me learn more and improve my communication.
Worst: On the last months of the year some work just got too repetitive which I think will lead me to some stagnation. -

How can I, in JS, make sure a class (Vue) is instanciated only after a certain element is inserted into the DOM?
Currently, things are executed in this order:
1. Create modal
2. Append my-element to modal
3. Show modal
4. Instanciate Class (Vue)
Gives me "Vue cannot find my-element".
However, it works if I instanciate Vue in the console after modal is visible.4 -

Hey guys ! I want to start some kind of blog so I can share my experiences and tinkering with stuff.
I can't seem to find a good CMS for that ? I've no problem with coding the blog myself (with Rails preferably), but I'd like to not start from scratch ! I'll need handle syntax coloration for code samples for example.
Any advices, ready-to-use stuff or not ? :)4 -

After a while, I already have something presentable on the blog. I have a lot of work ahead of me, not only in terms of styles but also functionalities.
* Multilanguage, because I love you too.
* Option to save locally, for when there is no connection.
* Search bar, to make life easier in general.
And other things that come to mind.

I've ran into some problems because I misunderstood iOS `Decodable` protocol. After a while I've compiled some utility classes to transform it into something more expected.
I've written a short post about it here and I don't have any place to share for feedback. So I thought I would post it here.

What news sources or blogs do you guys use to keep up with your current stacks, or even use to get into other stacks? For example, I usually keep within the Microsoft world of things, so I spend some time periodically going through patch notes on .net or the latest version of vs. If I want to get out of my comfort zone Ill look at a blog like hanselman, or I used to look at spolsky's blog before he went pretty inactive.

Thinking about doing some kind of coding video blog. I would talk a bit and work on several of my projects (Of course not 1:1 time scale). Good for me as I could learn from (more experienced) viewer and they could participate some kind of in this series. I think I would record and then put voice on it when cutting the video. (I don't want the viewer watching me searching for an error caused by a typo for 20 minutes :D) Avg video length: ~5-15 minutes
What do you think? Will this be cool or no viewers?
PS: Sorry for my bad english.
PPS: I hate people who apologize for being bad writing in english.
