If you start your npm install script at exactly 11:52:04 on New Year's eve, it will finish at exactly midnight.
Start off your 2019 right.10 -
For 2 years I tried to make my boss pay me what I know I should be worth. Over the same time the team morale took a nosedive down into an avalanche.
Today I told him, that I am sick of being kept waiting and listening to excuses. I want the payment I know I deserve and I want it before the end of the year. I believe to have stayed perfectly calm and factual, even told him "I am sorry, I really tried it, but I cannot take this anymore".
He found a way to put a (literal) "fuck you" and a verbal middle finger into other people's mounts, so he "didn't say it himself" and shut down the meeting telling me to look for another job.
Actually I have not felt as satisfied in my job for a long time, as I have in that very moment.
Time for a new start.17 -
Around 2009 or earlier, I began the long grueling process of creating my own batch AI (yes batch as in Windows Batch , kill me for not knowing there were better languages around). Looking back at it, it is THE messiest thing I've ever created. Mostly because of how many unnecessary files were created to make the entire thing work. However, I’m still proud of it to this day because of the dedication I had put into creating the entire thing.
I would create diagrams on the mirrors in my room; of course I would be scolded for this. But I was mad with thought working through the entire thing.
I would scribble and type whenever I had the chance, trying to create the functions that would allow the thing to talk back to me. Finally, when it opened its eyes and spoke its first words I quickly started creating the functions that would allow it to learn new inputs. Over time and with some elbow grease I was able to polish it up to my liking.
The entire program branched off some of my more earlier programs in batch, they mostly ranged from the medial to the crazy; i.e. turning my computer on and off at certain times of the day, and multithreaded migration of files to new disks
It's not as sophisticated as other AI that were being built at the time, but at the age of 16 and with no experience in real programming at all, I'd say it was my first stepping stone towards more sophisticated programs, and ultimately, my decision in Computer Programming at all.22 -
"But I don't know where to start..."
"... just start typing, be willing to mess up, and if you get lost just start over with better understanding from messing up. Eventually it'll work."1 -

Colleague: I really wish array index in all languages would start from 1. If I ever write a language the index will start from 1.

My prof suggested me to use matlab instead of Python for my project.
So I started learning and found out that in matlab ARRAYS START FROM 1.

I'll just leave this words here.13 -
Me everyday:
1- Get excited to start coding
2- Start coding
3- Run code
4- Bug found
5- Start debugging

7- Start questioning myself about career
8- Start hating life
9- Start banging head against the wall
10- Start looking for a different job
11- Oh shit! It was a typo

I used to work as an all-in-one IT guy in a company. One day I got a call from our HR team and the HR said "my Internet banking account has been hacked! It's logging in automatically!!" So I went to see the issue, and the so called "hack" was because she allowed Mozilla Firefox to save her login credentials, and because of that the login form was automatically filled. Such a stupid ass4

CTO wants all variables in file to be same length. You cant have "start" and "stop". You must have "start" and "cease".16

Both: Let's start over.
Me: Everything different
She: Where to start?
Me: Dunno
She: ...
5 min later
She: I created a new folder
Me: ?
She: That's at least a start, isn't it? ^^
Both: *laugh*
Me: Lemme create a rant about that6 -
I'm 21 today 😦, I'm up at 1 in the morning programming.
I'd still rather be on a PC on my birthday... Though to be far I did go out all weekend with my mates got absolutely hammered... I got punched by a girl in the face (I did nothing I swear) among... Other things

Got my first response from a company i applied to a few days ago--it was a no without much explanation as to why, but at least they actually responded.3

So, for an assignment we have a task of developing an IT product for a business to solve one of their problems. One of the project development examples contains the following screenshot.
You can tell, from this screenshot that whoever made a screenshot of this example has no idea what they're doing.14 -
Don’t put pressure on yourself to understand everything. No single person understands it all, that’s why there’s a bunch of us.6

Finally made my laptop a dedicated linux machine, time to start working on a theme then to start on OS development until Gamemaker comes to linux! :-P14

I start with the features I want for sure and then i start looking at what data I really really need to store. Then I start looking at what data I don't have to store because of privacy reasons anyways.
Next stop is looking at the security.
When that all looks good, I simply start programming!5 -
Teaching my girlfriend how to code and she’s got to the indexes start at 0 crisis.
Just to make her feel better, anyone else remember their indexes start at 0 crisis? 😅
So far the convo is “why does count start at 1 and index start at 0?!? Developers can’t fucking count”35 -
So, a few weeks ago I asked you guys what would you do if you were to quit your current job. I attempted a start-up with an old "friend" of mine.
He was very enthusiastic and hardworking at the beginning. However he received a job offer from somewhere and told me that he would work there just until we found the company officially and then quit and work full time on the project.
Well... I put around 300 hours into the project and developed the system, did most of my part according to the plan but the guy didn't deliver anything.
Turned out he had another secret partner whom he first introduced me as his mentor. I had my suspicions and suddenly shut down API servers, project management domain and mail server. Suddenly the quiet guy called me asking if I was alright and everything was fine.
Then, nothing happened. He went radio silence until I called him last night and he picked up the phone drunk and mumbled something like "I'm aware of you being a victim" then went to "you're passive aggresive" or something like that and I said nothing, just hung up.
I think you can figure out what went down on the other side and I'd like to hear your scenarios.
PS: now I have another start-up idea: I'm gonna pick up a flamethrower and burn the world while laughing histerically. Anyone who'd like to join is welcome.3 -
I can't wait to start my job so that I can finally start ranting about work-related things like everyone else3

So we're working on a few initial apps for a hackercamp and finetuning the OS. We've been coding for like 17-18 hours trying to finish this off without a day 1 patch on the event itself, when someone starts swearing like a sailor. We walk past him take a look at his code and see that he's started an array at 3 instead of 0. He's one of the more experienced members on the team so this is a lack of sleep bug rather than a not knowing. To this day whenever someone makes an array error in their code someone always shouts "Arrays start at 3 right"!
Maybe not the most satisfying bugs but man is it funny as hell. -
Rant. Always start debugging with the start point :p
We have a lamp with a dimmer.
A day, the dimmer make some noisy noise. Just down it and the lamp never bright again.
I open the dimmer, check all connection, bullshit what is wrong?
I decide to bypass the dimmer with a standard interrupter. But doesn’t work.
Finally.... I check the bulb 💡 and... burned...
Morality: if the bulb doesn’t work, check the bulb!

In India a standard WordPress website with 10 pages and blog functionality would cost you as little as Rs. 2,000-5,000! That's $314-$784
And a few "agencies" do make a decent product for the amount
But in general the product is not maintainable at all. I once handled the upgradation of a client and her referrals has been giving me projects ever since!12 -
Why is it always on Fridays that some server decides to start acting up?

Going to spend this whole August, studying Python.
Any tips or suggested route to get the grasp of Python? Should i start at 2.7 then 3 or just go directly to Python 3?12 -
One job I picked up was for an IoT Start Up. It was quite interesting work, reporting to the technical director, who was an electronics engineer, who was designing the hardware himself, they had a couple of firmware guys already, and just needed someone to take care of the software.
So they said they needed something in Azure that they could stream their data to and provide analytics for their clients. It had to be Azure, and it had to be Azure Native, and was to be Multi-client, as they had a deal with Microsoft to showcase how well Azure works in the IoT space at an exhibition/conference in 3 months time.
So I worked flat out for 3 months, on a whole variety of technology, from C++ to get the radio packets from their IoT chip, Python to run on the hub to take the data from the C++ and stream it to the cloud, Azure IoT Hubs in every continent to receive the data and store it an a Cosmos DB, and then Power BI analytics wrapped up in an Angular front end that the clients could log into.
Got it finished 2 days before the show, and they were so pleased I got flown business class to Singapore to be on the stand and talk to customers.
The first sign of trouble was when we arrived at the show to find we just had one of those little circular tables with two stools in the middle of the floor, about two feet across and no power.
No problem, I was able to sort that, swapping laptops in and out.
Microsoft were really happy with what we had, and couldn't believe I had thrown it all together in 3 months.
We picked up a potential customer for the system, a major Asian Telecoms company.
Then when we got home, the CEO swooped in. I had never met this guy before. Imagine one of the VC guys from Silicon Valley, or the CEO from the IT Crowd. You get the picture. Could talk the hind leg of a donkey, and real street smart, but no brains. He insisted on "taking it from here" and flew alone to strike the deal with the customer. Came back with an MOU in his pocket and said to me, their guys will be in touch with you.
Then I got a call. Can you send us the source code and tell us how what servers we have to run this on?
Um, its cloud native.
No, we can't use a cloud it has to be on our servers - your CEO told us that was no problem..
He hadn't even taken the trouble to find out what it was we had built, and what he was selling.1 -
Have you ever been at at that magical point where you have to decide if it's worth putting the effort in to understand the legacy code, or just delete it all and start again?2

I just saw that ARM released their design start IP for Cortex M0 for free to the masses , it’s obfuscated verilog code.
I worked on SoC design based on this in college but it took a lot of paper work to get these file but now they are free to download
This is exciting as this makes a open-source community based microcontroller design possible.
Only missing piece here is the verilog compiler they use is not open source .
Has anyone messed around with Cortex M0 DS + ghdl or iverilog. I am about to start a little side project will update more on this19 -
Every time I read some script kiddy insult here I just think: "you propably did the same thing 10 years ago, not JS but PHP, but it was the same level of shitfuckery and the C/C++ Devs looked the same way at you you look at NodeJS developers now."1

I've always been a tech fan. Made my first site when I was 12, but I stopped at HTML and CSS. Now I started coding, and here I am - 24y/o studying pointers in C. I don't even php.
Am I too late? How old were you when you first started coding?9 -
fuck, took me a whole hour to debug an issue in my game that causes the start menu to switch right to the game itself, only after an hour i realized that i named the start game method as a default start ( a default method that executes at the very start of the scene). feeling so dumb now.

Recently I learned that the collective noun for a group of hedgehogs is an "array".
Possibly the only kind of array where we can all agree, you'd have to start counting it from 1.
Or I guess you could just name a pet hedgehog "Element Zero" if that's how you prefer your arrays2 -

As a fan of C#, I'll be entering the world of web development with ASP.NET, but there are so many things to learn before getting started! StackOverflow locked my account. I'm hoping someone here might be kind enough to help me with a bash script I'm "bashing" my head with. Actually, it's zsh on MacOS if it makes any difference.
I have an input file. Four lines. No blank lines. Each of the four lines has two strings of text delimited by a tab. Each string on either side of the tab is either one word with no spaces or a bunch of words with spaces. Like this (using <tab> as a placeholder here on Devrant for where the tab actually is)
ABC<tab>DEF
GHI<tab>jkl mno pq
RST<tab>UV
wx<tab>Yz
I need to open and read the file, separate them into key-value pairs, and put them into an array for processing. I have this script to do that:
# Get input arguments
search_string_file="$1"
file_path="$2"
# Read search strings and corresponding names from the file and store in arrays
search_strings=()
search_names=()
# Read search strings and corresponding names from the file and store in arrays
while IFS= read -r line || [[ -n "$line" ]]; do
echo "Line: $line"
search_string=$(echo "$line" | awk -F'\t' '{print $1}')
name=$(echo "$line" | awk -F'\t' '{print $2}')
search_strings+=("$search_string")
search_names+=("$name")
done < "$search_string_file"
# Debug: Print the entire array of search strings
echo "Search strings array:"
for (( i=0; i<${#search_strings[@]}; i++ )); do
echo "[$i] ${search_strings[$i]} -- ${search_names[$i]}"
done
However, in the output, I get the following:
Line: ABC<tab>DEF
Line: GHI<tab>jkl mno pq
Line: RST<tab>UV
Line: wx<tab>Yz
Search strings array:
[0] --
[1] ABC -- DEF
[2] GHI -- jkl mno pq
[3] RST -- UV
That's it. I seem to be off by one because that last line...
Line: wx<tab>Yz
never gets added to the array. What I need it to be is:
[0] ABC -- DEF
[1] GHI -- jkl mno pq
[2] RST -- UV
[3] wx -- Yz
What am I doing wrong here?
Thanks.17 -
A few months ago I lost my laptop that had my school project and our start-up projects. Hadn't learned about version control by then. I had a rough time explaining to the time where the projects were as they were due in a weeks time. Spent the next 5 days rewriting the project. It came out more neater and faster than the previous one :)1

What a fucking boring day.
I had a heated argument with a fellow colleague because he wants us to add a feature to a certain product for free. He thinks am so money minded as I was pressuring him to charge the feature but he's defending himself that we are just a start-up.
Am left wondering if I was wrong or if giving free stuff will pay our bills or should start-ups code some stuff for free.....4 -
When did you scrap your project and start over, and why?
I'm working on a second project at my company.
But as the project got longer and initially unplanned features started to pile up, the software has become a total mess and a pile of conversion layers for all sorts of I/O.
I'm starting to believe that it'd be better to learn from our mistakes and start over with a better plan, if it means we'll be able to achieve performance and stability improvements.
So, what was it like scrapping your project and starting over?2 -
how to describe the feeling when you started using sql and you had to get the first element from a table via jdbc...
you, obviously, think "oh, the first index is 0, every languages start at 0, so let's take the content at 0!!!" but the ide returns you "0 < 1"
so you don't understand, you stare the code for 20 mins, you start crying, and then you realize sql starts counting from 1 because it pretends to be cool BUT IT DOESN'T
I hate you, sql.5 -
I made a serious mistake that is to start directly a programming language without mastering the algorithms, because finally, without a good knowledge of Algorithms we will never be innovative in this field, that's why I reinitialize myself and I take a step backwards to start the algorithms right and master them well.
Your advices please. -

How to bring your zsh start-up time from 7s to 0.2s on macOS:
1. Don't call "brew info", piped to grep, piped to awk
2. Don't dynamically detect the current version of brew-installed packages
3. Don't call java_home
4. Actually don't do anything dynamically. Just symlink shit as they get updated
There you go. Don't be like me. Use the "brew --prefix" command and put its output in your .zshrc, instead of running it every time -

Context: at my current job I work as a product photographer as well as studio admin. On side I go online to different brands websites in search for product images (if we haven't the product in store yet).
Now the banger, I searched for some peacoat colored pants but the brand didn't put it out yet. Pulling out some Super AI hacks I changed some stuff and things in the URL (color ID + small amount of ?doThisAndThatPhP) and... BOOM result! Right color, high Res image. The Color isn't searchable or shown via Google or the brands page, but the image is already on their server 🤔*yoinking the image*

I got my first proper start in programming through a side business operated by the same guy that was running a local makerspace. He had me learn basic git syntax and change some values in ionic.
From there I decided the best way to learn how to do this was write my own project in angular. From there I branched of with React and Vue.2 -

Just fucking hate how expensive and hard to find a cheap SMS gateway
And as in cheap, I mean cheap as send email

Downside? I must pay with a payment gateway made by the same company (coincidence?)

At least there's Session Buddy where you can open a window with yesterday's tabs, but why on Earth would employees not have the possibility to keep the recent tab setting enabled? Especially when it was like this pre-merger.3

How fast is vscode in Linux? I'm irritated with time it takes to start my complete dev environment in windows.?
nodejs + mongodb + vscode + chrome + studio3t
So you see I've to start 2 electron based apps and chrome. Node js takes its fare time to start the first script.27 -
Do it's been about 19 days since my last update on my shitty internet and the upgrade that's meant to be in the pipeline for the current month.
Despite seeing people laying cable around my neighbourhood there's been no update on their website or in my letterbox.
It's halfway through the month and news outlets are reporting that the NBN has said that they:
Have 99% coverage
100,000 suburbs that aren't fully catered to
But, can't cater to a property that is in a relatively dense area less than 20km from a major city. -
Just joined a start-up as full stack developer intern ! The environment are so clean ! (Physical and Dev environment!) I'll start posting rant stories sometimes then 😊2

Today it's finally snowing again in my city, for the first time after years. Fuck yeah!
As I'm waiting for the bus, a car splashes my legs with freezing cold, dirty water. Dammit. Then a second car splashes me the same way. Fucking dammit. Then as the bus arrives, I close my umbrella and that little shit breaks. Motherfucking Dammit.3 -

I think the biggest bullshit about work life and beginning of a career is that at the start of your new job, colleagues and employers keep telling you that everything's gonna be fine and that things come with time and you'll learn and grow as you go on.
Not true. If you just cruise along and you don't maintain your skills, sooner or later they're going to ask you to do something you don't have the skills for, you won't be able to do it or anything remotely like it because you don't have the know-how and the result is: you get fired. I should know because I've never once not been fired; I'm up to 5 jobs now. lol
There is almost no greater example that demonstrates humans are liars.6 -
I need to actually build up my website since all that's there is a digital resume currently
I have too many ideas for what I want like a simple blogging space, project showcase space, my teacher recommend a lanking page, and a better digital resume. but limited free time to figure out where to start and what to use and that's really demotivating
I'm thinking about using node or vue to learn a framework but again I'd have to learn them since all I know is normal unmodified js. And again where the hell do I start4 -
If you had the opportunity to start all over again in programming right now, which language would you choose to start?7

How do you "weed out" the good startups vs the "bad" ones? I get quite a few random emails / LinkedIn messages from Start Ups, but I am weary. Anyone know a way to do research on their company before replying?3

So, I'm part of a pretty nice project with an awesome community. Being open source it didn't have really strict standards, evidence of this being one of the latest merges to master.
The latest merge breaks the project. It received approval because of some minor changes that were easily overlooked. Although they should have tested the build nobody bothered.
Now that it's been merged I've rebased several of my own requests I am unable to test them until the original author makes a fix.2 -
The top reason was probably the people I surrounded myself with. I always loved computers and, as a result always joined cool tech-based clubs when I heard about them. The teachers there were also Devs and could do some awesome things with the code they wrote.
Hence me downloading eclipse and everything after... -
Since a friend of mine owns a domain for an open-source project and manages pretty much everything, including dealing with a db for registered accounts, I'm currently not really able to help when it comes to UI/UX things and frontend, besides the "main editor", which is like the core functionality of the project. I would like to set up smth like docker (on Windows 10 home, which is already not suitable, great start🤦) for some kind of pseudo-db all inclusive functionality thingy to be able to run a working example locally. Also a goal would be to switch to Typescript, include testing, to use webpack and to automate as much as possible.
Sad part is, I don't even know where to start and I'm also 100% sure that I will do almost everything wrong from research to implementation.😐rant personal project simulate locally where do i even start webpack and all that struggle to start docker1 -
Why JS is terrible at string manipulation.
how they implemented it
str.substring(start,end)
how it should be
str.substring(start,length)4 -
That feeling you get when starting a new scala project. Fresh start! Lessons I have learned:
1) Add a linting tool before the code gets inconsistent to the point where it has thousands of style errors.
2) use test driven development from the start so that refactoring later is a breeze.
3) Write top down, no matter how much I want to implement the algorithms first.
4) write the tests first! -
All those complaining about getting interrupted while coding/debugging. Imagine getting interrupted twice in every 3 minutes during your anyways short working time (talk 2 to 5 hours) 'cause your actual job is to tutor people in using a toolchain and not developing it (at least not during that time)...

My team and me nearly finished a big new feature for our website.
I am a junior dev and this was the first big thing I was in charge of and now that I see how it unfold I feel really bad.
It consists of php backend (integrated into a 20 years old monolith) and vue frontend (punctually jumpstarted by a clusterfuck of typescript files included into php rendered html) and especially the frontend part looks so bad.
Vue is relatively young in our project and almost nobody has a clue about it. I learned so much about vue in the process, but the result is a behemoth of awfulness that grew over several months.
I have a really strong desire rewrite the whole mess, but I will never be officially allowed because it works and practically all the flaws in our code base are subject to the classic
"well, someday, somebody probably has to do something about that, but for now let's start this shiny new feature"
So for now I think about doing it secretly and pass it to my buddy to review it. I guess chances are high that not even the colleagues in my team (apart from my buddy) are going to notice, since they aren't as interested into vue as I am and don't have the overview over this features code as I do, but on the other hand it feels like something I could get in trouble for and apart from the cursed code base my company is great.
Have you ever bin that disgusted by your own production code before it was even one year old?3 -
App idea: Platform for ongoing entrepreneurs
I just come from a start-up weekend. I really enjoyed the support we got from 17 different mentors (most of them founded in the past on their own).
Back home start-up funders don't have the access to that mentoring. My idea is to create a platform specialized for founders, where you can share your idea, believes and ask question all around your business.
I think especially in the early founding stages entrepreneurs are full of questions. Helping and discussing with other selfminded people is probably very enjoyable for us founder folks. A difference to the f.e. reddit concept: Users can create "diaries", a place where all storys, questions and posts about your project are stored. Reading a diary from beginning to end shall be a fun experience, reviewing your or others history of their "babys" and following the entrepreneurs thoughts through all stages of founding. Users of course can create multiple diaries.
Functionality will be suited for the listed usecase, for example a "Post as Anonymous" function will be added, if you have to deal with company sensitive data and more stuff like that.
What do you think about the idea? Do you like it? Would you use it? If not, tell me why?
Cheers -
