So...Today I found an SQLI (sql injection , google if you're not aware) in one of our products , I start exploring it , I get my trusty Kali on me workstation . sqlmap etc. Tell my manager it's a true positive... I start exploring the db , half the devs at my manager's place start staring at his screen as I proper fuck a QA db server... I hear a qa guy mention triangulation as sqlmap dumps a uid table in his face . I hear my manager's manager saying 'this has been in our app for so long and we found it just now ? Who found it ?' *manager proudly saying me name* 'He's still working this late ?' ...apparently now my trip to england is getting covered for both me and me gf by the company...

Hired a new backend Dev. He writes a script and sends it for testing...
Tester: "It's not working..."
Backend Dev: Goes to Mongo and deletes the tester's whole profile...

Around 2009 or earlier, I began the long grueling process of creating my own batch AI (yes batch as in Windows Batch , kill me for not knowing there were better languages around). Looking back at it, it is THE messiest thing I've ever created. Mostly because of how many unnecessary files were created to make the entire thing work. However, I’m still proud of it to this day because of the dedication I had put into creating the entire thing.

I would create diagrams on the mirrors in my room; of course I would be scolded for this. But I was mad with thought working through the entire thing.

I would scribble and type whenever I had the chance, trying to create the functions that would allow the thing to talk back to me. Finally, when it opened its eyes and spoke its first words I quickly started creating the functions that would allow it to learn new inputs. Over time and with some elbow grease I was able to polish it up to my liking.

The entire program branched off some of my more earlier programs in batch, they mostly ranged from the medial to the crazy; i.e. turning my computer on and off at certain times of the day, and multithreaded migration of files to new disks

It's not as sophisticated as other AI that were being built at the time, but at the age of 16 and with no experience in real programming at all, I'd say it was my first stepping stone towards more sophisticated programs, and ultimately, my decision in Computer Programming at all.

Going to start mid September in Luxemburg.

My laptop had a full meltdown and wouldn't turn on. It tried to start up then the screen went blank. It's happened before so I lost hope pretty quick.

I hate it when people whine about code reviews. You should never take it personally. We're not against you, we just want good solid code.

Wanted to play a new game this WE.
It's quite demanding so decide to boot into Windows, because NVIDIA driver support.
Haven't booted Windows 10 in a month so I start early in the morning to do the updates.

At the time I didn't know what he meant, but these past few days I'm starting to understand‬ what he meant. It's not using the cache itself, it's the cache management that is hard. I work at a startup. My boss wants me to work on a project which will create a lot of value because it will be one of it's kind. So it will become a part of the company's IP.

So it's been awhile since I switched from PHP to Golang.

At first I missed PHP a lot, but golang really has some advantages, so its fine.

Left a php job because I was fed up with php and was promised I could work with different languages.

First, if everything is perfect there is no need to hire you.
Second, think about the value that you can bring to the team instead of making them feel bad, how can you prepare an improvement plan and start to learn the factors and reasons behind those decisions.

If you think you found a solution, think twice.
If the implementation is taking too long (too many changes in different functions and classes to fix a single bug) there may be a better solution, it's never too late to reverse the changes and start again, it's not a shame, in the worst case you will reimplement the same solution, but better, in the best you'll find an easier and better one.

I'm a software developer, and I've seen my fair share of "good enough" code. You know the kind of code I'm talking about: it works, but it's not pretty, and it's not very maintainable.

The problem with "good enough" code is that it's a slippery slope. Once you start writing "good enough" code, it's easy to fall into the trap of always taking the easy way out.

Before you know it, your code is a mess of hacks and workarounds. It's hard to understand, it's hard to maintain, and it's a nightmare to debug.

I've seen projects go down in flames because of "good enough" code. The code was so bad that it was impossible to fix, and the project had to be scrapped.

I'm not saying that you should never write "good enough" code. Sometimes, you just need to get something working, and you don't have the time or resources to do it perfectly.

But if you're going to write "good enough" code, you need to be aware of the risks. And you need to make sure that you're only writing "good enough" code for a short period of time.

Once you have a working prototype, you need to start refactoring your code and making it better. You need to make it more readable, more maintainable, and more testable.

If you don't, you'll eventually regret it. Your code will become a liability, and it will hold you back.

So next time you're tempted to write "good enough" code, think twice. It might save you some time in the short term, but it will cost you in the long run.

Finally took the time to start learning Angular 2. I wanted to do it right so I set up the development environment with webpack. Man does Angular 2 take a lot longer to get setup properly versus Angular 1. I mean it's worth it to do it properly but it was a lot more labor intensive getting a good dev environment setup than I had anticipated.

The world of SSO (Single sign on) it's a real shit.

At start I tought its a pretty common feature that lots of people want, so there should be a lot of open source options for making a server and client libraries.

So far I've only found to libraries, written in java with a fucking big book instead of a simple documentation with billions of options and features but without a fucking guide to get it running and connect with a database.

It's that hard to write an easy manual with the steps to get it running instead a giant book with million's of technical terms and architectural details?

I was away for a long time. Now I got a new job which means it's time to start ranting. Fuck this legacy code is worse. I've been browsing devRant for a while now, and it's a really warm community, so i wanted to ask a question. I want to get into C programming and don't know where to start. Could someone point out somewhere good to start?

Does anyone else get triggered when you use the python socket .recv() and the server does not return anything so the program just stays there indefinitely? For me, I can't even Ctrl+C it so I have to close the entire window. It's especially annoying when I start a server in the interpreter (quite a bit of lines) and I have to rewrite it afterwards.

I get amazed almost every work day by how buggy the File Explorer is in Windows 11.

Actually, it's the whole Microsoft experience, that never worked for me. Most products are not at all intuitive (e.g. Google Sheet UX > Microsoft Excel UX), some other products shouldn't even be released (e.g. I've tried Loop, which is supposed to be a Notion clone, but it's more like a cheap demo).

What i thought to be a cool company, turned out to be a shitshow.

Our "Team Lead" when assigning tasks keeps saying things like "it's only..." or "It's just..." or "You only need to change one line [there]..." And that's in regard to a terrible product with a pile of tech debt. So when you actually start to develop/fix things, you end up redoing third of the whole application.

How do you deal with this? How do you tell the "leader" that he should look into what we have in a code before making us all look bad for doing "just this one line change"?

Why these fucking companies don't support Linux on desktop and get rid of fucking Windows? Dell has developer edition laptops yes but they are not as available as Windows ones. Why don't other companies don't start such a trend? Oh let me say it, money! But as developers leave Macbooks for better choices, I think it's time for manufacturers to start investing in Linux as a replacement.

I spent two hours trying to find out why the wifi dongle on a new device we're building doesn't start (it's detected by linux and all so technically everything works) tried the scripts we use on a raspberry pi they work perfectly. Dev bootcamps? I went to one! Probably the best decision I ever made.

They aren't perfect, they're pricey, and they won't make you an expert, but it's a good way to expedite a new career, gives a good base knowledge to start out.

It's "normal" that a tech start-up changes their webapp design 3 times in one year?

The challenge of interesting side projects is that it's not just the thing. It's the thing then a whole-ass visualisation library. Or tooling for whatever stupid thing I want to do.

Also then I get bored and start on the next thing.

Decided to change how my game engine asset loading and sorting systems work, giving up on making everything editable JSON files just so it's easier to manage and actually build things.

Currently trying to work out a way to load all of the packages sprites into 1 singular asset bundle and here is the evolution so far...

Revision 1: Compiles a single 328KB PNG into a 24MB file in 190 seconds.

Revision 2: Compiles same image into a 24MB file in 5 seconds.

Revision 3: Compiles into a 16MB image in 4 seconds.

It's not much but it's a start :-D

(Still haven't built a loading system so who knows if it works yet ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

As some 6 of you might know from my previous post I was gonna start with my OSCP course. Well, I didn't.

I thought maybe I needed some more practice before I do, and I joined this wonderful platform called HackTheBox (hackthebox.eu)

It's a really amazing place to test a lot of your skills in pentesting. You practice on various machines, each having it's own challenge different from another, it really helps in thinking differently and learning while you move forward.

I'd really like to recommend it to anyone who is interested in it! :)

The start of a new chapter of career life...

Until now, I always saw myself as the base raiser... but raising the base is not what everyone else on my team wants...

Only took me 3 years to realize... so I guess time to just fall in line...

I guess it's why some smart people act dumb on the job... It's just easier to blend in...

If you start to get frustrated, take a break. Your brain has two modes of thinking: focused & diffuse. You can only utilize focused mode for a short time, and sometimes it's harder to look at the broader picture. Go take a walk, do some push-ups, or check devRant. You diffuse mode will make some connections when you're not even trying once you relax a little bit.

I know it's quite soon to think about it, but: next year I'll graduate in cs and I'm still not sure about what to do after:
- I could just stop studying and start working
- study for another two years on a specialistic degree in Italy
- go take a two years master in machine learning, data science and ai in Finland

Ya know when somebody else is on a project and you see their code and it's just sorta stay away from that bag of crazy? Like, some people I work with I see their code and it's fine, then I see some people's code and my eyes start to bleed.

Every programmer uses a framework. It's either someone else's standardized, tested, & well documented framework, or its one you start writing just for this project.

It's really sick how beginners start to code in Javascript and CSS, and their complex frameworks, without even understanding atleast the paradigm first. Googling your way up can be fine for smart ones, but as least time optimal this learning method sounds, it's as dangerous and non-productive too.
Also once project gets to a certain level, it's practically impossible to revisit and refactor old codes in front-end languages which kills the maintainability. Views?

I was 22. First proper start was through an Intro to Information Technology course as part of my current degree. I was working a dead-end, depressing callcentre job. I was thinking what my life was going to be like, so I made a concious decision to start my degree and make something of myself. It's, of course, a bit more detailed but I am more interested in what others have to share.

A really big pet peeve of mine is that we don't get teached coding in schools. Right now I'm about to finish middle school and wander of to high school. I am really surprised that my country's school system doesn't teach coding! The only way to get teached coding in our schools is in 11th grade by picking exact sciences and going to learn IT. A couple weeks ago, my friend bought Risk of Rain 2 and got a free copy to gift to a friend, so he gave it to me. That game is so fucking addicting. I don't know the term for it, but it's one of those games where every round, you start with basically nothing, and you get items that buff you up, and so on. If you die, you have to start a new round. Then it just keeps going and going.

..That's it. I just wanted to recommend a really fun game to anyone who hasn't heard of it. For our Linux users, it runs in Proton and the first game has a native Linux port, so I believe the second one will have a port at some point (it's early access, so stuff is still being added).
