Too much noise in my workplace, can't focus on my code,
bought 300 bucks noise cancelling headphones,
best money i've spent19 -
Need to work on my focus. I feel like it's one of my greatest weakne ... hey look, a DevRant notification.2

What I do when I sit down to work:
Get a cup of coffee or tea,
Sit down open up some music; rock if I'm feeling okay or slow jazz if I'm feeling anxious,
Open my text editor (Atom, I love it so much),
Open git desktop,
Look at what was my last commit,
Remember where I left off,
Look blankly at code for a few minutes,
Then I pull up phone and start writing stupid shit like this on devrant.11 -
Your fucking single page whatever the fuck app doesn't need React! Stop overcomplicating everything and getting distracted by shinny new frameworks, just focus on solving the problem!2

Ever since I started working at a company that has a real focus on software I have less to rant about....😒3

Do anyone else have major focus issues? When I'm enjoying something, I can focus completely for a long time. But when I'm miserable, 15 minutes seems to be the maximum I can focus.
It's really hard when you have long passages to read for class and are unable to focus long enough to actually absorb the material.
I really want to try ADHD medicine, but I don't want to rely on it to focus.8 -
I enjoy listening to Metalcore while coding. It really helps me calm down and focus/concentrate (the irony of that whilst having someone scream right into my ears 😂). It also helps me chill and regulate my emotions better. Am I weird? What helps you focus and code better?31

My headphones just died because the battery is empty!
Not a good start!
I forgot the cable at home!
Bye bye peace, productivity, and focus6 -

Working from home routine (Lockdown edition):

How do you deal with open space offices?
I find it quite difficult to focus, the constant chatting, the constant questions, phone ringing, surprise meeting, more question, arrays of interruptions and questions again. I believe I would be a lot more productive if left alone in the total, undiscontinued silence.
Have you found your escape, your zen, your inner focus? Please share, I need some ideas16 -

Don't focus too much on learning one specific language. After some coding getting to know a new one is going to be no problem. Focus more on paradigms and maintainable code.
Oh, and don't forget, comments are sometimes way more useful than the actual code. -
Heard this from my professor today-
" Focus on product not on technology"....don't know how true this is.4 -
Writing coroutines for io_uring. Submissions aren't working (they go through but the operation never seems to complete). Just fixed a few segfaults because of error cases not destroying coroutine handles correctly. Been on this for two days, finding more and more things I need to do that unrelated to the task at hand. Don't have issue tracking set up yet because haven't had time. Mountain of things that need to get working just for a demo is only growing. Layered maps of data structures and code flow are in my head as I'm trying to mentally debug some of this. I'm focused, completely dead to the outside world.
Then I feel a small scratch on my cheek. Three hours of mental mapping and a deep stack of thought, vanishes into thin air in a single moment.
The trade-off is worth it though.10 -
Headphones, a quiet room, a comfortable chair, something to drink (coffee, red bull, water, tea) and something that is interesting enough to totally focus on.4

I've been using Firefox focus for a while, and for the most part, I like it. But why the hell won't it let me go to government websites (taxes, passports, etc)?
Regular Firefox has no issues with it, why does focus?3 -
Think I am going to try out my first stuff for my game engine in 2D. The games I have the most fond memories of were 2D. Sure I like what has happened on the 3D side. But it would be fun to recreate some of my favorite 2D games. Except with one caveat: procedural generation. Never play the same game twice. For testing purposes I will have a seed system to regenerate the same worlds. I would have played these games so much longer if they had been based on a seed for generation of content.
I also like the idea of weapons and armor never being exactly the same. Sure they can look similar, but on close inspection you could see differences. It will be fun to start with base models and then add imperfections and differences.
Another issue I have with fantasy games is always leveling up the weapon by buying something better. Sure we have improvement systems though smithing and magic, but some weapons are always better than others. I wanted to have a game where weapons could be improved by usage and upgrades. Kill 1000 trolls and the weapon gets imbued with trollbane. Kill a dragon and the blood infuses and it deals fire damage. So a player could start out with the family sword and end up with a god tier weapon at the end of the game. Make weapons become legendary. Not because it has more power, but because trolls recognize the blade and the wielder and are scared shitless.
Terrain in 2D should be a lot easier to generate. Weapons, armor, etc should be easier to modify and generate. This should give me the grounding I need to develop the algorithms for a future 3D system. Godot is currently stronger in 2D than 3D. That will change in the next couple of years as more focus is put on the engine. There is no reason I cannot experiment with mixing 2D and 3D as well.
Holy shit, I was just thinking I cannot imagine the amazing shit they could have done with the games I played as a kid with 2D physics!
Haha, something they had in the older games was actual gambling. You could bet on monster fights and slot machines in game. I wonder if that takes a hard hit with ESRB now?
Currently stuck in tutorial hell. Learning how the engine works and seeing what features are available. I get more excited each video I watch. The engine is packed with goodies and the addons are crazy good.
tldr: First project will be short game in 2D. Will explore procedural content.13 -

I swear to god, if I read another medium post on how you managed to be focused and productive I will fucking... well... roll my eyes, make a facepalm and rant about it on devRant!
Who gives a shit if I'm unproductive and unfocused?!
Well, look at me now, I'm fucking productive while I write about you, you fucking peace off shit! And guess what? I'm not even using any of your 40 todo apps or time trackers. There is no pomodoro timer next to me or framed quotes from Steve Jobs hanging on the wall. Oh, I must be a fucking genius!
But what if YOU became unproductive?
What will happen when YOU start to procrastinate?
Do you really think the world would care?
Oh, but you are not really a writer are you? you're a developer building your app!?
Well fuck, I guess you're going to change the world than?
It's your big project. Your life's work, your legacy.
Let me remind you...
All apps will be abandoned!
All blog post will be forgotten!
Productive people will die!
Focused people will die!
Enthusiastic bloggers writing about productivity will die!
All CEOs and CTOs will die!
All developers will die!
Steve Jobs is dead!
In x years, you and I will also be dead!
Whatever you do, it's not really that important!
It's really not.
You're not going to change the world.
The world doesn't need another app.
The world doesn't need your advice on how to be productive.
You are not special.
Deal with it!8 -

Focus of mastering one language, don't jump around to every web langue out there.
Also don't follow the programming language band wagon. Focus and master the basics first HTML, CSS, Jquery. These aren't going anywhere and a SOLID understanding of JavaScript will go WAY further then you think4 -

After I took some time off from work, I decided to accept the offer for maintenance of two projects. Those are from two old clients, so I think I will not stress too much, since I know what to expect most of the time.
The issue is, sometimes I have a hard time to keep concentration. In the past, I could work for 3h straight, totally focused, would pause for 20min for stretch, and then come back to work. Now I can only focus for 30min or 1h, and after a pause, it's hard to concentrate again.
There is a lot going on in my life right now, and I know the worry is probably distracting me. I'm trying to listen instrumental music, drinking coffee... But that's not enough. Somebody has any tip?6 -

Focus stealing - it winds me up more than is probably reasonable.
I'm there, typing away in my text entry UI widget of choice, purposefully entering text to do some thing as expediently as possible and then... oh, well I'm not any more, am I?
No, because some other window has decided that it needs the keyboard focus for usually no reason whatsoever, other than poor programming manners. Sometimes the same app will keep stealing the focus - oi, mate, I was typing over here? Could you not get the current focus and see that I'm busy?
This happens in chrome's dev tools _a lot_ but dev tools needs a rant all of its own.2 -

Ok, so I need some clarity from you good folk, please.
My lead developer is also my main mentor, as I am still very much a junior. He carved out most of his career in PHP, but due to his curious/hands-on personality, he has become proficient with Golang, Docker, Javascript, HTML/CSS.
We have had a number of chats about what I am best focusing on, both personally and related to work, and he makes quite a compelling case for the "learn as many things as possible; this is what makes you truly valuable" school of thought. Trouble is, this is in direct contrast to what I was taught by my previously esteemed mentor, Gordon Zhu from watchandcode.com. "Watch and Code is about the core skills that all great developers possess. These skills are incredibly important but sound boring and forgettable. They’re things like reading code, consistency and style, debugging, refactoring, and test-driven development. If I could distill Watch and Code to one skill, it would be the ability to take any codebase and rip it apart. And the most important component of that ability is being able to read code."
As you can see, Gordon always emphasised language neutrality, mastering the fundamentals, and going deep rather than wide. He has a ruthlessly high barrier of entry for learning new skills, which is basically "learn something when you have no other option but to learn it".
His approach served me well for my deep dive into Javascript, my first language. It is still the one I know the best and enjoy using the most, despite having written programs in PHP, Ruby, Golang and C# since then. I have picked up quite a lot about different build pipelines, development environments and general web development as a result of exposure to these other things, so it isn't a waste of time.
But I am starting to go a bit mad. I focus almost exclusively on quite data intensive UI development with Vue.js in my day job, although there is an expectation I will help with porting an app to .NET Core 3 in a few months. .NET is rather huge from what I have seen so far, and I am seriously craving a sense of focus. My intuition says I am happiest on the front end, and that focusing on becoming a skilled Javascript engineer is where I will get the biggest returns in mastery, pay and also LIFE BALANCE/WELLBEING...
Any thoughts, people? I would be interested to hear peoples experiences regarding depth vs breadth when it comes to the real world.8 -

My area of focus is to focus.
I get distracted way too easily, I often think I would get far more done if I could stay focused for a longer period.2 -
December, the last month of year. I made big plans to finish 2016 with a perfect ending.
Few places to travel, startup, freelancing and many more...
But first I need to pass my exams which are not based on programming. 😕😑 I am just not able to concentrate, my PC looks at me and I look at her. But trying to focus on the study. 😕4 -
Can someone help me how to focus for 6 straight hours/day until the end of this month? Got 1 last exam left till i graduate with comp. science degree. I have to study databases but only theory. And i fucking hate reading text. I hate theory. I like solving problems analytically and theory is my weakness.
I read theory shit for a few mins and then distract myself with mobile games and tiktok for a few hours... I cant concentrate studying this shit...
How do i forcefully focus.
Can someone suggest me the best app that actually works to help me focus or something? Or some yt sound waves music?14 -
I see here so much motivation in work you are doing and i am here standing without any inspiration, motivation in learning things, i can't stay focus more than several minutes reading interesting topic. Personally: Anise or thyme tea or a large Cappucino because you know this brain need some premium fuel to work 😂26 -
Do you have a routine? I work from home everyday since quarantine and I don't think we are going back to the office.
I would like to be more productive, not in the sense of forcing myself to do more job and add more stress, no one is complaining about the time it takes me to finish tasks.
I'm looking for a way to scatter my working hours so I have chunks of focus and chunks of breaks in which I go out for a walk or something instead of a big chunk of focus mixed with distraction. I'm behaving as if it were a "9-5 job" when it is actually "8 hours per day" with flexible schedule.8 -

Actually, the office. Because it's a space exclusively for working.
I did home office for quite a while and still do so from time to time but i get distracted and/or lazy too easily to really get something done at home.

Last night I talked to a friend I hadn't heard from in a while. She visited the city I'm in two years back with her boyfriend. She had a brain injury recently. Her boyfriend and her broke up. I will never forget them. She asked a lot of questions about suicide.2

What do people feel about remote work?
I got into my current work about 8 months and we all were remote working.
In 8 months, we met in person several times and worked together at one place for a week or two.
We have never overcome the feeling of a disconnect when we work remotely. There's less focus and less clarity on things to do.
Is this common? How do people be focused and productive in remote work?
Also how do people communicate effectively?2 -

How rotten and half bitten is this most valuable Apple? See that they get quite some bashing for their latest Catalina release. And they deserve every portion of it, I think.
Honestly, when I saw our testers going through the different betas, which hardly installed and on which our software kept behaving differently, nevertheless they pushed their Golden Master and released. Didn't seem a good idea.
Currently I had to update to Catalina to check some small broken feature of ours and now the active window keeps on losing focus every few minutes. Have to grab the mouse and click there again to continue working. Really fucking annoying. Hope I can track it down some time.. or trash my iMac.2 -

Needless to say I hate it.

anyone else having a few hours of not being able to focus after lunch? Or is that just me?
It doesn't matter what I eat or what I do, after lunch I just can't focus on anything. Until 4-5 pm. then focus comes back again.
The only solution to this that I have is basically don't eat a full meal at lunch, but try to have healthy snacks instead.
I dunno.
Any ideas? it annoys the hell out of me.4 -
Finding it hard to focus. I'm into UI, backend, frontend, iOS... Exploring FP. We've just had our first child and I need to put my time and energy into what will a) provide healthy financial remuneration b) be more enjoyable than frustrating c) be relatively futureproof (if that's even possible). For some reason I have a huge distaste for JavaScript (as an ecosystem) which has led me to look into Elm. I've enjoyed Ruby but something in my mind tells me Functional programming is more logical for me. It's a whole new approach and skill to level-up on. I love programming my own back-ends, but for me, design is so important and I want to be part of the visual, tangible part that people interact with. I'm a one-man operation which means I do design, full stack Development, client liaison, financials, client acquisition. Freelancing is a double edged sword - I don't know when the next project will come, but I also need to focus on the projects I have without taking too much on. At times I think employment would be good, despite having it's on drawbacks which I read about repeatedly on here. Any advice?1

The app I would sell my soul for:
Detect when a program wants to take focus and deny it only if there has been any input in any other place in the past 800ms or so. (White/black listing would be awesome to).
Simply killing focus stealing is as counter productive as not killing it.2 -
Frontend developer mainly, getting all excited by C#, net core, apis, http, databases. A new world of trinkets and hard-edged engineering. Makes me eyes glitter.
But my day job needs me to become as proficient as possible on the frontend of the stack. As we warm up to a huge application rewrite, with me as the sole frontender, it becomes clearer and clearer that, if I am not only to survive, but leave a codebase behind me that is clean, thoughtful, well modularised and built with maintenance and performance in mind, that I must let go. I have to focus.
I feel a little sad today. Somehow, right now, the frontend world does not feel as exciting. Javascript feels loose, unpredictable...my work open as well to everyone with every flavour of opinion. Because it is observable.
But I am mortal. Time is precious, and limited. I feel I need a dose of curiosity discipline and that, if I can do so, I can devote myself not to my coming and going whims of interest, but the real hard work of learning craftsmanship once that feeling of glitter has faded.
My brothers and sisters, steady my hand. -
#cursee&productivity
I'm beating the never ending tasks one after another past few days. Proud of myself and at the same time a bit tired.
Main problem is focus.
I can easily lose my focus along the way and then live the unproductive days for up to a week or more. I'm afraid to fall into that sink hole. 😣
So when I gained my focus, I try my best not to lose it. Which makes me lose track of other shits. Some shits are major like relationship responsibility, social etiquette etc. Some shits are minor like food and water. Nevertheless it's not very physically healthy nor spiritually.
I don't know how to easily switch on and off my focus. 😞
Maybe I should meditate 🤔 I don't know.3 -
I don't know if I should focus on Java/Scala or PHP/JavaScript after university -_-" Both is fun.. What do you think?4
-
I swear the most annoying thing about zoom is the fact it keeps requesting the focus while connecting to a call…
“Git a”
*alt-tab*
“dd [a letter][tab]”
*alt-tab*
“[a letter][tab][enter, missed cause it tries to focus itself again]”
*alt-tab*
“[Enter]”1 -
Take a walk, or focus on something else for a while, then after I've had a break I can return to whatever the problem is.
-
Should I focus first in AWS than Azure? My big company now provides us free enterprise subscription 150 dollars monthly credit to experiment.3
-
Today was too hot to focus and get something done. So we watched Conjuring movie and we will better code some stuff from home.
-
Ever look through at database and see a default constraint prefixed with DF_ and, for a split second, wonder why SQL needs a divine focus?2
-
How do ppl just keep coding. I can't stay on it for shit. Anything that comes to mind will distract me and keep me from starting or working on.... It sucks, its not even like i dislike coding. I actuay enjoy it once i start but games wirh friends n shit always take Priority for some reason :(8

and thou who shalt request to conquer thy kingdom; thy shalt do so boldly through blood and fire; until thee last man standing holds thy ground; and lets no entity destroy his focus; for thy focus broken is a slow route towards vanishing; while the unbroken focus empowers the conquered kingdom2

Want to focus on increase my knowledge of C, Linux, rust or anything related to systems programming, practically the only jobs available in the country are web development jobs or Java, nothing else. So focus on my dreams or focus on not starving to death. This sucks.1

how do they liquefy and bottle mental focus? how is this ginger ale soda literally just liquid mental focus?1

I need help,
I'm on that task for a month and it's a shitty task where I need to write algorithms too complicated for my level and I'm totally demotivated right now... I can't even understand my own code and can't focus for more than 5min... I just wanna go home and never see that code and work on that anymore...
Has this situation ever happened to you ? What should I do ?6 -
So I had to deal with this a while ago...
/ 86972915 On focus and write new text into dropdown when is saved /
change_field_to_update : function (name){
var context=this;
setTimeout(function(){
/*Protection */
try{
var field_path=context.state.editAttribute.field_path;
context.on_field_blur.bind(context, context.state.editAttribute);
/*Improve this */
$("#info_"+field_path).parent().find(".dx-texteditor-input").focus();$("#info_"+field_path).parent().find(".dx-texteditor-input").on("blur");
for(i=0; i<=1;i++){ $("#info_"+field_path).parent().find(".dx-texteditor-input").focus();$("#info_"+field_path).parent().find(".dx-texteditor-input").focusout();}
$("#info_"+field_path).parent().find(".dx-texteditor-input").focus();$("#info_"+field_path).parent().find(".dx-texteditor-input").focusout();$("#info_"+field_path).parent().find(".dx-texteditor-input").focusout();
}catch(err){
}
},2000); -
Thinks about a great tool all day, comes up with ideas and features, figures out how to make it all work, sits down, 'accidentally' selects the YouTube icon. Look! An entertaining video! Another one! So Many! Wait, what was I doing?

Best thing about having two screens and rectangle is that you can collect all the security pop-ups on the smaller one and just continue working till it's actually convenient to restart everything. (Like after the meeting)
Seriously corporate security measures are completely fucked. Not only did they manage to slow down even Go compiles to a crawl with defender and other crap. Just tried to write 6 words to our PO. Focus got stolen by 4 of the 6 words typed.
One of them demanding to restart Firefox and that one can't be closed or moved out of the way unless you have some fancy window manager tool. This isn't security this is harassment.4 -
Not learning how to study and focus on something at High Schools. I'm learning the hard way, i often don't have time to plan a thing as i wish, i just have to do a quick plan, hope for the best, and eventually learn something in the end.
-
I'm currently working as an intern in a Web company and its the first time that I have to work 8 hours a day (I'm in college so that's completely new to me).
How do you guys stay focused for 8 hours? It's kinda hard to go from 90 minutes classes to 8 hours of (somewhat) consistent work.
How do I focus for a long period of time?7 -
Focus...
I am on vacations and I thought: well, let me take a look at Shopify. People uses that, may be learning it could be good.
So I created a Dev account, a sample store and opened the docs.
"Oh, you should use this and that JS library and work with React (link to react)"
So I clicked the link and now I am learning React...5 -

How to get instant motivation and lazer focus on my coding? Do you know any trick? I know that brain fog requires a healthier lifestyle, but believe me i do a lot of that ( yoga, hikings, arts). I want to be able to grind on the computer like ten years ago, or find energy like playing rocket league ( which happens in one moment). I seek for a dirty hack, bene gesserit style.11
-
3rd day back into work after xmas break and I still haven't had laser focus yet, and I have so many projects to do :-/
-
Finished vocational training! :) Fulltime front-end guy now. #happy no hassle with shitty school or something anymore - lets focus on side projects again :)
-
Hey guys,
I need a suggestion
I work for a website project
I Still have a confusion about that.
Which one mainly focus on first when I start from the beginning
Either focus on design or focus on functionality15 -
Game development
Because:
It's a fucking blast compared to literally any other focus, at least as far as I've found. -
I have a burnout but I’m just back from a long (national) holiday, so I’m insure of asking to take days off, nor if it will work, since I’m supposed to be rested.
On the other hand I was sick almost all days so idk if those days off count as holidays.2 -
Reluctantly thinking of switching to a PM role so i could focus all my code-fu to my side projects!!
what do u guys think? i know most of us hate PMs, but they do get paid more for what i think is less work (mental focus wise).
😞😞😞2 -
Area of focus: Imdustrial Automation (Distributed Control Sytems)
Why: Because I love to control huge plants.3 -
Some days: I have a completely perfect focus on my BAU tasks!
Other days: It's difficult to focus on my BAU tasks. Maybe I'll slack off in dR for some time.
Recent days: Impossible to focus on BAU tasks. Impossible to focus even to complete reading a single rant in dR.
I am an apolitical person, politics don't bother me. The pacifist inside me is yelling "STOP THIS MADNESS!!!". This yelling is why I can't concentrate. It's not like ANC Headset can block out this scream....3 -
Alright so this I have been feeling from sometime now, this abnormal energy to work till dawn n dusk and then realizing that this body needs time to heal back and I have to take rest before starting any work.
I want to meet focus of a saint1 -
What do you do when you don't feel like / can't get anything done? I couldn't focus at all. I feel like my brain is missing.3
-
I have been 70% focused on front-end development technologies (HTML, CSS, JS,and related frameworks) and 30% on back-end web technologies (PHP, SQL mainly). I enjoy making websites and web apps that look good, but also understand the need for back-end functionality.
-
It's March, hopefully I'll be able to focus on one thing at a time and stop jumping between technologies.

I think the Franz platform has the weirdest bug I have ever seen on frontend. For the unknowings, Franz is basically a wrapper for chrome instances that lets you gather up all your teams, slacks, emails and the like into a single desktop application (and it eats your memory like the memory monster).
Anyways, when I type a message somewhere, the input will sometimes lose focus and focus on another input in another chrome instance. So for example, I type a message on slack, the input loses focus (which I don't immediately notice) and the rest of the message is typed out in teams instead.5 -
Imagine a text editor having single key shortcuts of letters that do random things to the text document (like delete it, hide it or who knows what) if your focus is on the toolbars, not the textarea and it is impossible to distinguish where you have the focus, until you start writing
well, wait no more!! its called Google Keep! available in stores now!1 -
Sometimes I hate interruptions like
- what a nice video on yt
- great idea from 9gag
I just want to focus for few minutes, please. -
Is it possible to know everything and every concepts in computer science or should I focus my career in one particular area of cs... ??!1
-
Burr puzzles, I love the way they challenge me, they also improve focus and helps with attention to detail. Great tool for ADHD.

Having one of those days where I'm struggling to focus on the day job, because all I want to do is switch over to any one of my numerous personal projects.
It's easier to ignore and just slog through with work when there are plenty of people around, but if I'm working from home, or it's a day like today with half the office and most of the management out, it's proving to be rather difficult.
How do you all keep on track when you'd rather be working on your own stuff?2 -
24 hours of being awake. At Work. Struggling to focus. Using DevRant infusions to keep myself alive.
-
I'm facing a technical phone interview for a full-stack engineer position. Any tips or helpful advice? What stuff should I focus on?1
-
Area of focus...leaving a couple tests running while I go enjoy a coffee on the balcony and focus on making the payloads more serious/articulate/real .
-
Full stack devs never ask her woman for Anal sex, rather he would say "Today we will gonna focus on Backend Development"
-
What Hardware specs should I focus on when buying a server which runs virtual machines using ProxMox or XenServer?4
-
Area of focus: Tooling
Why?: Because I don't like to work on big projects. It is fun to create tools from scratch by myself -
Does anyone know of any good opensource time tracking software with a focus on privacy?
I don't trust the proprietary stuff but it's useful software1 -
My area of focus is getting paid doing shitty PHP, JS, CSS tweaking freelance gigs and save enough money so I can finally focus on learning electronics and make stuff with arduino, stm32 etc. Hardware interfacing is so interesting.

I'm working towards taking my Network + exam in a few months. Any study topics Would I really need to focus on to pass.
