Whatever be the current trend on Linked-In, at the end of the day the product development life cycle remains quite the same.
Still, as developers which general domains in software do you think would flourish in the near future?
My picks (not in order) -
>> Cyber security : automation, both offensive and defensive
>> Block chain : trustable data platforms
>> Applied AI : a few key models, applied to all niches, bettering existing UX
>> IOT : wearables, embeddables, smart appliances
>> AR : Navigation prompts, real time info about real life objects
>> VR : Immerse entertainment. (Metaverse 🤮)
>> Quantum computing : first gen costly commercial releases, new algos
What would you add or subtract from this?1
Gentle reminder to avoid working on personal projects from your work laptop.
Ignore if your prudence is above the baseline.1
Is there a Git client for Android that WORKS (without rooting)?
I've seen quite a few but would love your recommendations. Looking to just pull, push, commit.
Would probably connect to Github, maybe Bitbucket or Gitlab3
Oh noo I just realised that I have become a Product Manager, accidentally.
... This can't be good, right?5
SMH, this is the 4th manager of the product we are building, who's leaving the company, all in 1.5 years. Out of reactions at this point.
(FYI managers here are involved in multiple projects at the same time)
Please give your opinions/experience, I'm tired of meetings with the legal team. :(
Can a proprietary software link to a GPL-licensed dependency during runtime?
Can it do if its GPL "with Classpath Exception"? What about CDDL?
Case in point - propriety Java web app needs javax.* libraries (JakartaEE components) at runtime (from project or JavaEE app server), but they are licensed under GPL.
Can they be used or is there any workaround?6
Lately I feel like I'm mentally working at 50% of my capacity. I'm spending the time, but I feel a major loss in focus and motivation.
This is just a rant, but I think some of you might have faced this at some point. Did anything help you lately?7
While scraping web sources to build datasets, has legality been ever a concern?
Is it a standard practice for checking whether a site prohibits scraping?27
One of my professors made us submit Hand Written codes. I mean writing, compiling, executing on the machine, and then writing by hand on paper to submit.
It was so irritating.3
As a dev, not a manager, what's the maximum number of projects you can handle at once?
I know it depends on the workload but wanna see how others do on average.
Literally fried up with so many projects put on my shoulders after the exodus from my company since they f-ed up bonuses and hikes.
Also, why does every manager think their project is The Priority one? Selfish assholes.6
Oh I'm tired of carrying chargers with me. I wish there was something like a wireless distance charger... Kinda like how a WiFi Hotspot can provide wireless connectivity to all devices in the range, I wish there was a Charging Hotspot.
I know this is not exactly dev related but more of physics and engineering, still, anyone has any idea about something like this? Do you think this is feasible?14
Got to do some security audit of legacy ABAP code for SAP systems. Do people still use it? If yes, why.3
How to react to a coworker using equals() instead of equalsIgnoreCase() for checking case insensitive strings?19
<<prev. #wk235 advices>>
~ Study the Error log deeply, Google each line if needed. Don't give up.
~ Learn by doing. Don't just read/watch.
~ Practice breaking down the problem statement first in different components and hierarchies. Don't jump into coding right away.
~ Write some, review some. Don't put off review for later.
~ Even if you don't exactly follow the best security practices - always ensure that your program is safe for use. Especially for user-inputs, etc, pay attention.
~ Never distribute code with passwords/keys written in it.
~ Don't hard code stuff, use Config file, environment variables, etc.
~ Try to automate repetitive stuff like build and deploy etc
~ Save and backup you code.
~ No one knows everything, also, today's knowledge gets outdated tomorrow. Continuous learning is synonymous with this field.

"A well defined problem is a problem half solved."
~ Charles Kettering.
Feel like crying on hearing this when the product feature requirements change in so aGiLe way.3
I'm in involved in a situation where one old corporate is helping build solution for another old corporate's Windows 98-XP systems.
Still a better love story than twilight.
Whenever I have to use anything new, I just follow the requirements - Googling through the whole way, rather than doing a course first. I get really insecure if someone asks whether 'Best Practices' has been used. Sometimes I wonder where would I be without Google and SO. I don't even wanna talk about Maths. I suck at that.1
I'm stuck in a rented apartment in my work-city and working from 'home' during the quarantine. Now, the owner wants me to leave for a month while he shuts down the place - right after the quarantine ends - when I HAVE TO GO TO OFFICE.
Gotta work on some enterprise application in ASP.NET. Haven't written a single line in C# before... Have experience in Java though. Any suggestions regarding learning-resource? Thanks in advance11
My partner says I'm too much of dry logic and lacking in emotions. The way I want to find logic in everything and ignore illogical spontaneous emotions... Isn't helping me in here.
Just wanted to vent out and ask whether this is the curse of the nature of work... with tech I am in (I fantasise it to be that) or is it just My individual problem?15
Imagine a time when a colleague contributes a shitty spaghetti of non-optimized code that neither use mnemonic variables nor conventional naming of functions, and you can imagine the dark hours of maintaining it and your fingers itch to fix it but you don't have the time and the responsibility too to do it. He doesn't listen to you and you feel bad to tell this to the boss as the colleague is also a friend you've known since college and is a good person otherwise. No options seems to give peace.6
I kid you not, last night had a weird dream. In it, as I walked into my place my girlfriend came up to me with a smile and guess what.... She turned into a terminal.. With green fonts. The vividness of the dream is still fuzzing my mind.3
So this is my first job at a corporate company and my God I need to apply for permission and wait for it for so long just to install common freewares for dev like VS Code. Is this normal? Really I am pissed when requirements pop up and I get stalled for over a week.12
So my manager is making the designer (who didn't know how to code) of our team learn front-end development. We are so hopeful for a peaceful future.4
